A cancer diagnosis can bring forth a myriad of emotions not only for the patient but also for their caregivers and partners. Cancer can also deeply impact our relationships. My guest today is Cynthia Hayes, author of "The Big Ordeal: Understanding and Managing the Psychological Turmoil of Cancer". Cynthia based her work on interviews with hundreds of cancer patients and experts, including oncologists, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and neuroscientists. Through their insights and stories, Cynthia takes us through the chronological progression of emotional turmoil typically experienced during cancer. You will find that you are not alone, Cynthia shares the wisdom of those who have gone before us. We look at what caregivers should understand about the emotional experience of cancer, why emotional health is not a mainstream concern among oncology practitioners, and how these emotions affect the patient, how as a caregiver we can balance our own emotions and needs with those of the patient, how we can support our loved ones in recovery. We dive into the science behind how our brains and bodies process all of this information coming at us, and how cancer can change our relationships with friends and loved ones, including our physically intimate relationships. This conversation is a valuable resource for patients and caregivers who are dealing with the emotional challenges of cancer. Cynthia, thank you for sharing your story and work with us! I have already recommended your book to many others, as it has become my go-to resource for supporting those with cancer and providing clarity in difficult circumstances. They also discuss what to expect from a cancer journey, how to best assist people in your life who are battling cancer, and more. It was exciting to interview this trio of guests and learn from each of their approaches to battling cancer. Today on Feminine Roadmap Gina's guest, Cynthia Hayes helps listeners navigate the emotional journey of cancer. As a cancer survivor herself, Cynthia has become a patient advocate and author of “The Big Ordeal: Understanding and Managing the Psychological Turmoil of Cancer”. She shares what cancer has taught her about life and the control we have. Practicing letting go of control is a big part of the learning curve of cancer and accepting that life is going to be a roller coaster of emotions makes it easier to deal with it. One of her greatest beliefs is that while most cancer patients feel isolated they actually experience many of the same emotions and struggles. Cynthia wants listeners to know that their emotional response to cancer, or the response of their loved ones, is totally normal and somewhat predictable. By acknowledging that it's okay to not always feel strong, brave and ready to fight, Cynthia believes that understanding this alone helps cancer patients and their loved ones build true resilience. In our conversation she talks about the impact of stress on the brain, the emotions and the body, what it looks like to navigate all of that. She shares the three main coping strategies that people use and how those can all come into play depending on where you find yourself on any given day. Cynthia also gives us sound advice on how to support healthy conversations around the cancer patient's emotional journey. Often in our attempts to encourage someone with cancer we inadvertently may actually be communicating in a way that feels like judgement or an expectation of a certain behavior. If you or a loved one are experiencing cancer, this conversation will empower you along that journey. Grab a cuppa something wonderful, a love one and hit play. This is a powerful and practical conversation. Please remember to subscribe, rate and share! Thank you!

Coping with cancer is hard. It is an emotional ordeal as well as a physical one, with known and somewhat predictable psychological responses. And yet, patients often feel isolated and alone when dealing with the stress, anxiety, depression, and existential crises so typical with a cancer diagnosis. The Big Ordeal, written in collaboration with a psychologist and two oncologists, tackles the emotional side of the experience head-on, to help newly diagnosed patients and their loved ones anticipate, understand, and deal with the psychological turmoil ahead. Based on interviews with scores of patients and experts across a variety of fields, combining patient stories with medical insights and advice from those who have been there, and structured around the typical phases of the process, this book is an accessible resource for anyone who receive a cancer diagnosis.Link to the book on AmazonLink to the book on Barnes and Noblebooks, book podcast, author reading, author, podcast, self-help, nonfiction, health and wellness

Cynthia Hayes Bio A former freelance journalist, management consultant, and marketing executive, I have spent a lifetime preparing to write and market this book. An early writing career (with by-lines in Savvy, Working Women, Advertising Age, Advertising Week and TV Guide, among others) taught me the basics of interviewing, synthesizing information, finding the headlines, and telling a compelling story. After a brief interruption to earn an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, I further honed these skills over 30 years of management consulting, where my success continued to rely on my ability to jump into new topics, pull sensitive information out of sometimes reluctant interviewees, digest specialized knowledge, and raft a persuasive narrative that turned complex findings into easy-to-digest guidance. Additionally, as an adjunct professor at the NYU Stern School of Business and executive trainer I developed courses and taught thousands of professionals, speaking frequently in front of large groups, answering difficult questions on the spot, and conveying enthusiasm for new ideas and challenging concepts. Shortly prior to my own cancer diagnosis, I resigned from Montefiore Medical Center, where for three years I served as vice president and chief marketing officer. In addition to providing a deeper understanding of the medical world, this experience gave me an opportunity to sharpen the marketing knowledge gained through my consulting practice and build relationships with many professionals in the cancer field. Having returned to the writing profession, I recently completed my first novel and am now dedicated full-time to the completion of The Big Ordeal.
