UK law prohibits the advertising of prescription-only medicines. Nevertheless, some online pharmacies are marketing Rx drugs from “skinny jabs” to high strength eczema treatments, essentially selling prescription medicines directly to consumers, explains AdverCheck managing director James Walmsley. While regulators are cracking down on illegal practices, the growing market for prescription medicines is increasingly impinging on traditional consumer healthcare categories, Walmsley warns. In this episode of Over the Counter, we get to the bottom of this fascinating issue and outline what firms need to know.

Magnetar, a three-piece blackened death metal band from the UK, have released their debut album ‘There Will Be No Peace in My Valley' via Vendetta Records. Featuring mastermind Dan Walmsley, who plays all instruments except the drums, which are hammered by Necronautical/Foetal Juice's Rob Harris and the vocals which are delivered by Winterfylleth/Aro bassist, Nick Walllwork. When a band with the heavy calibre of Magnetar comes along, we pay attention. So, it should come as no surprise that There Will Be No Peace in My Valley has a beastly sound. One based within the world of blackened death, but not curtailed by the more extreme and aggressive soundscape, and more than willing to experiment with melody. You can read our full review of the album here: https://www.gbhbl.com/album-review-magnetar-there-will-be-no-peace-in-my-valley-vendetta-records/ We spoke to mastermind Dan Walmsley about the release of the album. Global health care company, GSK, during their recent earnings report, outlined the company's progression in the areas of innovative vaccines and specialty medicines. During the investor call, CEO Emma Walmsley, addressed the earnings, speaking optimistically but realistically about the strategic developments of GSK. Walmsley mentioned that there is firm confidence in GSK's RSV vaccine, Arexvy, seen through market research figures and professional confidence levels.GSK's Performance This QuarterGSK has shown steady performance in Q1 of 2024, with stable growth in its principal areas of operation. The company has seen a 13% rise in sales equating to £7.4 billion. This was accompanied by an increase in core operating profit to £2.4 billion, a 35% growth from last year. GSK's core earnings per share have also risen by 37%. This performance can be attributed to the increasing acceptance of the company's innovative products in the market. The key to this performance is the strategic products, as acknowledged by GSK on its earnings call. These include Arexvy, Shingrix, Ojjaara, and Jemperli, which have been central to the company's growth. Also contributing to the company's stable performance is an ongoing commitment to research and development, facilitating a link between innovation and growth.GSK's Alignment with Consumer Trends and Future PlansMeeting emerging consumer trends, GSK is aligning its product offerings towards innovative vaccines and treatments for complex health conditions. This alignment allows for strategic planning concerning future growth. As the company affirmed on the earnings call, plans for investment into the vaccine portfolio are underway, including the regulatory submission of a new 5-in-1 meningococcal vaccine candidate. In terms of geographic strategy, GSK plans to focus on U.S. for Arexvy, and China for Shingrix. In addition to this, a focus on expanding GSK's HIV portfolio and investing in respiratory therapies is clear, suggesting broadening and strengthening its product range.During the earnings call, Walmsley also discussed the potential impact on the GSK's HIV business from a Part D redesign, aimed at reducing out-of-pocket costs for Medicare beneficiaries. However, GSK was clear that they will not provide specific guidance on the impact at this time and would continually evaluate the situation to adapt their strategies. In summary, the recent performance of GSK in Q1 2024 shows steady growth facilitated by strategic product launches. The company's strategy towards meeting emerging consumer demands and a constant focus on innovation puts it in good stead for the future. However, as with all business performance predictions and evaluations, these assertions require constant review and verification as market conditions continually evolve. This is a public episode. On the podcast today we have Dan Walmsley. Dan is a long-time user of WordPress, having started using it even before version one was released. With a passion for experimenting with different publishing platforms, Dan eventually discovered WordPress and has been using it ever since. Currently working at Automattic as a Code Wrangler, Dan is part of the Applied AI team. Although the team is relatively new, with only a few members, their mission is to coordinate and guide the various AI initiatives within the company. Dan talks about how Large Language Models work, and how ChatGPT has driven awareness, and demand, for AI technologies in a way that was almost impossible to predict just a year ago. This has caused many companies to become deeply interested in AI and what it can do for their business workflows. We get into whether the reality of AI can live up to the hype. We move on to explore the differences between site generators and site builders, and Dan introduces the concept of the ‘copilot era' in which website creation can be somewhat automated. Whether you're new to AI or have been paying attention for a while, this podcast offers a fascinating insight into its impact on society, and how it can accelerate progress in fields like scientific research.
Dave and Dan takes you inside of Automattic and their own thoughts around WordPress, WooCommerce and AI.

Emma Walmsley, who became CEO of drug giant GSK in 2017 after 17 years at L'Oreal, has led the company through several challenges: disappointing COVID-19 vaccine candidates, noise from activist investors, and Europe's largest demerger in two decades when the company spun out its consumer healthcare business. But according to Walmsley this all comes with the job. And, she also has a lot to celebrate. Shortly before she visited the Leadership Next studio, GSK announced its RSV vaccine was one of two recommended for approval by the FDA for older adults. In this episode of Leadership Next, Walmsley talks to hosts Alan Murray and Michal Lev-Ram about the potential impact of that approval and the other aspects of GSK's infectious disease portfolio including innovation in H.I.V. treatment and prevention. She also shares her thoughts on the opportunities for data tech in healthcare, leading in the face of pushback from activist investors, and being the only woman CEO in big pharma. BIO: Jeremy Kokemor founded Right Tail Capital: a concentrated, fundamental equity investment firm based in Richmond, Virginia.STORY: Jeremy was an intern in an investment management firm where he got to cover small-cap metal miners. He was new to this industry and made several mistakes.LEARNING: Figure out your investment style. Be careful of overconfidence and overestimation bias when looking at stocks to invest in. Be willing to change your mind when the circumstances call for it. “Figure out if there's a certain type or style of investing that really appeals to you.”Jeremy Kokemor Guest profileJeremy Kokemor founded Right Tail Capital: a concentrated, fundamental equity investment firm based in Richmond, Virginia. Jeremy loves helping people with their investments through owning high-quality, under-valued companies for the long term. Jeremy grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, prior to attending the University of Virginia. After working in investment banking and investment management, Jeremy graduated from Harvard Business School. He then worked with several fantastic investors at global mutual fund company T. Rowe Price before managing concentrated portfolios at Private Advisors and Thompson, Siegel & Walmsley.Worst investment everJeremy had the great opportunity to work for T. Rowe Price after the financial crisis. He covered a portion of the technology sector for his internship and really enjoyed it. Later, when Jeremy was asked if there were any industries he did not want to cover, he said no because he liked learning about many different businesses. That's how Jeremy found himself covering small-cap metals miners.Jeremy was utterly new to this industry and often made mistakes investing in this industry. Some of the mistakes include investing in a small hometown Canadian company that announced they were making a significant acquisition of a copper project in Peru. The company had never done anything before in South America.Another one was an investment in a gold mining company that, when they began production, their operating costs were just through the roof and dramatically higher than they had ever envisioned. Jeremy should have realized that the estimates they were publishing were based on the lowest degree of confidence of a feasibility study.Lessons learnedDon't invest in metals and mining because it's a more difficult industry to make money in, and not many companies survive for long.Know yourself and figure out where you've done an excellent job, where you've made mistakes, and where you've gotten lucky or unlucky.Figure out if a particular type or style of investing appeals to you as an individual. As public market investors, we always know less than we think we do.Have enough conviction to make the investment, but also hold that conviction loosely and recognize that many things could go wrong, and at times you might get duped.Be willing to change your mind when the circumstances call for it.You'll learn much more from experience than from reading a textbook.Andrew's takeawaysSometimes in some sectors, it's the Wild West, so facing failure is a huge possibility. There's overconfidence bias and overestimation bias that we're all subjected to, and certain sectors are more prone to that.Actionable adviceIf you're a student, start building your investing acumen, even with just a little money. Make some...
