Synopsis: One of the most significant social determinants of health is housing, which can lead to prolonged hospital stays and an endless cycle of episodic care. The Association of Cancer Care Centers (ACCC) is dedicated to highlighting programs that address this disparity to improve medical outcomes and restore stability to patients' lives. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Deirdre Sekulic, associate director of social work at Montefiore Health System to discuss ways that HARP prioritizes patient outcomes to improve continuity of care. “We really wanted to focus on coordinating health and housing and putting in a support system to manage those patients better, get them linked to primary care so they would have better health outcomes and also to improve the flow of people into the emergency room and into the hospital” – Deirdre Sekulic “Housing is complex, never be afraid to ask people about their housing situation… ask them that in a very dignified manner, but to make sure to ask the question.” – Deirdre Sekulic Deirdre Sekulic, LCSW Associate Director of Social Work Montefiore Health System Resources: · An Innovative Program Addresses Housing Insecurity - Oncology Issues - https://bit.ly/3EJ2Pmr · Montefiore's HARP Celebrates 15 Years - https://bit.ly/4iE0TcX · Montefiore Health System - https://bit.ly/3Gw5nVA

The importance of patient history and reevaluation after initial treatment. Recognizing the unique presentation of cluster headaches and their management implications. Effective Acute Migraine Treatments: First-line treatments including anti-dopaminergic medications like metoclopramide (Reglan) and prochlorperazine (Compazine), and parenteral NSAIDs like ketorolac (Toradol). The limited role of triptans in the ED due to side effects and less efficacy compared to anti-dopaminergics. What do the Mings, The Rameses', the Romanovs, the Assads and the Clintons have in common? They are all family dynasties who, for better or worse, have influenced the history of the world.Historian and writer Simon Sebag Montefiore is a formidable storyteller, and his detailed and engaging works about historical figures such as Catherine the Great, Stalin and the Romanovs have earned him readers across the globe. In his most recent book, The World – A Family History of Humanity, his focus is no less than the entire world history, told through some of the most central family dynasties.More than an ambitious and grand project, Montefiore's latest colossal publication is also an exploration and re-thinking of how we tell history. “World history often has themes, not people; biography has people, not themes,” as he writes in the book's introduction.By emphasizing the family, he is able to combine the two – the great historical events with the stories of the people in the midst of it all. He also gives more space to the role of women, and tells parts of the world's history that might not be as well known among most Norwegian and European readers, such as Sundiata Keita's kingdom in Mali, Itzcoatl and the founding of the Aztek kingdom, and Ashoka and the Mauyrya empire in ancient India.Diving into world history with Montefiore on stage is Shazia Majid, award-winning journalist and author of the book Ut av skyggene (“Out of the Shadows”), about the first generation of Pakistani migrant workers in Norway. This week we review a recent paper from last 2023 about outcomes of cardiac transplantation in the adult congenital heart patient (ACHD). Little has been written on this topic until this very robust and large scale report. How do single ventricle ACHD patients fair at transplant and how do they compare to non-ACHD heart transplant recipients? Why might 1 and 3 year outcomes not be a 'fair' method of assessing outcomes in this very high risk patient group? How do HLHS patient outcomes compare with other single ventricles? Are there better ways to measure risk in this patient group and how might the data in this work inform risk stratification and management of failing Fontan patients in whom transplantation is being considered? These are amongst the questions posed this week to the week's expert, Dr Daphne Hsu who is Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jacc.2023.06.037For those interested in learning more about Dr. Hsu, take a listen to episode #166 from June, 2021:https://www.spreaker.com/episode/pediheart-podcast-166-a-conversation-with-professor-daphne-hsu--45144274

Our guest this week is a talented designer who is redefining the world of hospitality design. With over 25 years of experience, she has lent her expertise as an Adjunct professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Please welcome to the show Senior Director, Design & Project Management at Marriott International, Linda Laucirica!Linda joins Host Dan Ryan for an in depth conversation on design philosophy. Linda shares the importance of starting with a cohesive design strategy before creating a narrative, the necessity of having an elevator pitch, and how the hospitality industry can create more welcoming spaces in the healthcare industry. Takeaways: Hospitality is the desire to give comfort and joy. True hospitality comes from a celebration of shared human experience, and a desire to connect through that humanity with others The intersection of storytelling and design, with an emphasis on editing and conveying clear messages, is crucial in creating impactful narratives. This is important in full-service lifestyle brands, where aspirational design plays a key role in brand identity. When conducting research and designing for a brand, it is essential to effectively summarize the concept in a concise elevator pitch. This helps align design decisions with the brand's vision and ensures unique project outcomes. Creating successful narratives for "soft brands" requires a different approach than for "hard brands". Designers must create a strategy that directly connects with the brand's vision, ethos, and personality, before jumping into crafting a compelling narrative. Technology has impacted the design process, shifting from manual creation to digital tools and 3D visualization. This transformation emphasizes the need for designers to adapt, understand scale, and create spaces that resonate with our human experience. Hospitality focused design has an important role in the healthcare industry. By creating welcoming hospitals and treatment centers, you can leave a positive impact on someone's journey to healing. For Mariott's W Hotels there are three tenets of design: form follows fantastic, tactile materiality, and clean maximalism. These three elements combine to create unique experiences for guests. Quote of the Show:“That message also wants to have an emotional connection to who you're speaking with, right? Otherwise why write the story? Why share your thoughts?” - Linda LauciricaLinks: Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/lindalaucirica/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lauciricadesign/ Website: https://www.marriott.com/marriott/aboutmarriott.mi Shout Outs: 01:38 - McCartan Design: http://www.mccartan.com/ 03:26 - The Peanuts 04:10 - NJIT: https://www.njit.edu/ 06:07 - Cornell: https://www.cornell.edu/ 09:22 - Starwood Hotels 09:49 - Westin Hotels: https://westin.marriott.com/ 09:49 - Autograph Collection Hotels: https://autograph-hotels.marriott.com/ 09:50 - Le Méridien Hotels: https://le-meridien.marriott.com/ 09:51 - Renaissance Hotels: https://renaissance-hotels.marriott.com/ 09:52 - Design Hotels: http://designhotels.com/ 09:53 - Tribute Hotels: https://tribute-portfolio.marriott.com/ 09:56 - Gaylord Hotels: https://www.gaylordhotels.com/ 10:19 - W Hotels: https://w-hotels.marriott.com/ 19:31 - Dune 20:59 - Rockwell Group: https://www.rockwellgroup.com/ 21:01 - Barnes And Noble: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/ 21:29 - Pinterest 21:30 - Instagram 22:01 - Revit 27:04 - Woolly Mammoth Theatre: https://www.woollymammoth.net/ 27:05 - Arena Stage: https://www.arenastage.org/ 28:17 - New York School Of Interior Design: https://www.nysid.edu/ 29:50 - Mohegan Sun: https://mohegansun.com/ 30:10 - David Rockwell 30:46 - Children's Hospital at Montefiore: https://www.cham.org/ 31:43 - Carl Sagan 34:32 - Lionel Ohayon: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lionelohayon/ 34:35 - Memorial Sloan Kettering: https://www.mskcc.org/ 36:58 - W Union Square: https://www.whotelsnewyork.com/property/w-new-york-union-square/ 44:02 - Steve Higgins 44:08 - Theresa Fatino: https://www.fatinodesign.com/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

Nurses at Mount Sinai (UES) and Montefiore hospitals are out on strike after negotiations broke down overnight. Caroline Lewis, health reporter for WNYC and Gothamist, calls from Mount Sinai and Nancy Hagans, president of the New York State Nurses Association, talks about their reasons for striking and the key issue of enforcement of staffing ratios.
Sam hosts Drs. Noa Nessim & Libby Wetterer, 3rd year family medicine resident physicians and members of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) who, in affiliation with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), are a part of organizing efforts at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. First, Sam runs through updates on NYC's crackdown on not abusing homeless people, Hakeem Jeffries coming out on top for Democratic minority leader, and more, before diving into Rep. Mary Peltola's pitch-perfect response to her party's (Democrats) undermining of Rail labor, centering the needs of workers over the minimal profit of an already booming industry. Then, Drs. Nessim and Wetterer join as they dive right into Montefiore Medical Center's sudden divestment from the Bronx communities that they have served for ages, shutting down clinics left and right while shifting funding towards regions served by private insurance agencies, before moving to the relationship between Montefiore Medical Center and its employees, walking through the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and social unrest on spurring organizing among residents and interns, and how Montefiore took advantage of the COVID squeeze on the healthcare industry by keeping their demands of doing more with less even as the pandemic eased. Next, they dive into the driving desire of a new moral compass behind the healthcare industry, exploring the networks of Doctors' and Nurses' unions across the US, and the impact that successfully unionizing Montefiore Medical Center would have, before wrapping up the interview by tackling McKinsey consultants' role in spurring this disinvestment from their communities and exploring the best actions for the general public to take moving forwards. Sam also dives deeper into the horrendous mainstream coverage of the labor bargaining between freight rail workers and their employers, with all of the emphasis going to the impact these workers would have on our economy, and none of it on why companies with record-breaking profits are actively sacrificing it. And in the Fun Half: Sam watches Charlie Kirk grapple with Kari Lake's defeat as he once again fails to do the one thing he was hired to do (turn the youths conservative), David from Washington speculates on the recent missiles that fell in Poland, and Adam from LA explores how deep the GOP has poisoned the well of discourse around LGBTQ+ people. John from Cleveland discusses Jon Stewart's interviews and why liberals lend credence to credentials, and Sam dives deep into Stephen Crowder's incredibly cold open as he tiptoes through addressing the Kanye discourse while still pleasing his white supremacist followers. Sam also talks with Hannah about coverage of the Tigray War and the difficulty of speaking without expertise, plus, your calls and IMs!
