Send us a textEver felt like you're navigating a world that wasn't built for your success? This deeply personal episode unravels the complex journey of achieving professional excellence while wrestling with life's most challenging transitions.I'm celebrating passing an international certification with distinction – an achievement that came while balancing new motherhood, marriage, and career demands. This victory wasn't just academic; it represented overcoming postpartum depression, therapy struggles, and the persistent pressure to overachieve that many Black women know intimately. Your career can become a lifeline during periods of emotional displacement and loneliness, but there's danger in becoming defined solely by what you do professionally. The conversation expands beyond personal experience to examine how systems consistently cap Black success – whether through UK taxation policies that punish achievement, workplace cultures that view Black women as threats rather than assets, or the persistent colonial mindset that extracts value without giving credit. Drawing powerful parallels between personal career liberation and the broader decolonisation movements happening across Africa under leaders like Captain Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso, we explore what true freedom looks like in both professional and global contexts.Throughout this episode, we discuss navigating environments not designed for your advancement: understanding organisational politics, recognising your value as a subject matter expert, creating leverage through continuous learning, knowing when to walk away, and strategically planning career moves without revealing all your cards. Whether you're feeling stuck, undervalued or simply seeking a more strategic approach to your professional life, this conversation offers both practical guidance and the emotional validation that your experiences are real.Sponsorships - Email me: hello@toyatalks.com Cc: toyawashington10@gmail.comTikTok: toya_washington Twitter: @toya_w (#ToyaTalksPodcast) Snapchat: @toyawashington Instagram: @toya_washington & @toya_talks www.toyatalks.comhttps://toyatalks.com/Music (Intro and Outro) Written and created by Nomadic Star

pWotD Episode 2867: International Women's Day Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 327,957 views on Saturday, 8 March 2025 our article of the day is International Women's Day.International Women's Day (IWD) commemorates women's fight for equality and liberation along with the women's rights movement. International Women's Day gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. Spurred by the universal female suffrage movement, International Women's Day originated from labor movements in Europe and North America during the early 20th century, with the modern holiday, March 8, being declared by Vladimir Lenin. The earliest version reported was a "Woman's Day" organized by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909. In solidarity with them, communist activist and politician Clara Zetkin proposed the celebration of "Working Women's Day" approved at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference in Copenhagen, albeit with no set date; the following year saw the first demonstrations and commemorations of International Women's Day across Europe. Vladimir Lenin declared March 8 as International Women's Day in 1922 to honour the women's role in the 1917 Russian Revolution; it was subsequently celebrated on that date by the socialist movement and communist countries. The holiday became a mainstream global holiday following its promotion by the United Nations in 1977.International Women's Day is a public holiday in several countries. The UN observes the holiday in connection with a particular issue, campaign, or theme in women's rights. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:55 UTC on Sunday, 9 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see International Women's Day on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm generative Olivia.

Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: Mere Christians of the BibleDevotional: 2 of 5Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women…Mary (called Magdalene) …Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. (Luke 8:1-3)We're in a series exploring wisdom for our work today from some of the “Mere Christians of the Bible”—believers who did not work as pastors or donor-supported missionaries, but as entrepreneurs, tax collectors, and more.Today's passage introduces us to three mere Christians: Mary, Joanna, and Susanna who “were helping to support” Jesus and the twelve disciples “out of their own means.”Most scholars believe that Joanna was likely the wealthiest of this trio, given her position in Herod's court. But many also believe these women were likely small business owners who worked hard to produce the profits needed to fund Jesus's ministry.Mary, Joanna, and Susanna remind us of three important truths.First, God frequently celebrates women who work “outside the home.” From Eve working alongside Adam in the garden (Genesis 1:26-28), to the midwives God used to defy Pharaoh (Exodus 1:15-21), to Deborah's leading of Israel (Judges 4:4-5), to Mary, Joanna, and Susanna supporting Jesus's ministry, Scripture consistently shows God delighting in the work of his daughters.Second, our work has intrinsic and instrumental value to God. I talk a lot in these devotionals about how your work has intrinsic value to God—in other words, it matters for eternity even when you're not leveraging it to some instrumental and spiritual end such as sharing the gospel or writing a check to the missionaries pictured on your refrigerator. But these women remind us that our work does have important instrumental value. In fact, Paul says that is one of the reasons why mere Christians ought to work: so “that they may have something to share with those in need” (see Ephesians 4:28) including those who rely on the generosity of others to preach the gospel (see 1 Corinthians 9:14).Finally, God values offstage work as much as he does onstage work. Scripture doesn't mention these women preaching or performing miracles like the twelve disciples, but their offstage roles were so valued by God that Luke records them in his gospel. If you're working in relative obscurity today, take heart—God “will not forget your work” either (Hebrews 6:10).How should we respond to the three truths above?Thank God for the gift of working women (and, if you're a woman, for a God who delights in the work you do inside and outside the home).Ask the Lord whose work he might be calling you to support “out of your own means.”Remind a mere Christian working “offstage” that God sees and values their work today.

In 1894, South Australia was the fourth place in the world to grant universal female suffrage. Christian housewives were key to the cause.History was made on Dec 18, 1894, when a bill passed in the South Australian parliament granting women the right to vote and the right to stand for public office. This made the South Australian Parliament the first in Australia, and the fourth place in the world, to extend voting rights to women. In August of that year, a petition of 11,600 signatures had been presented to parliament, supporting women's right to a voice in the political process. It was the result of long campaigning and legwork by women's groups: the Women's Suffrage League, the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and the Working Women's Trades Union, which gathered signatures from all over the state. In this episode of Life & Faith, Dr Nicole Starling, historian of 19th century Australian religious and political history, explains the role of the WCTU in gaining women the vote, and also how temperance activists, often denounced as stuffy wowsers looking to curb alcohol consumption, were the first to spot connections between alcohol abuse and what we now call family and domestic violence.Explore:Nicole Starling on XMore info on Nicole Starling's book Evangelical Belief and Enlightenment Morality in the Australian Temperance Movement, 1832-1930

“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” - Robert Swan Guest Introduction: Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan, your host and founder of Pangea World Travel Agency. If you're a midlife professional, an empty nester, or a woman with a heart for adventure, you're right where you belong. This isn't just another travel podcast—it's an invitation to look at how travel shapes our lives, inspiring us to grow, to see the world in new ways, and to rediscover ourselves in the process. Together with incredible guests, we'll dive into heartfelt stories of adventure, resilience, and transformation, exploring not only hidden travel gems but those unforgettable, life-changing moments. So, grab your coffee, get comfortable, and let's set off on this journey—together. Now, it's my pleasure to introduce today's guest, Jamie Thomas. Jaime Thomas is based in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she owns Dreamscape Traveler LLC, a luxury travel agency specializing in adventure, culinary and cruise travel globally. She is an active member of several women's including BPW, 100 Women Who Care and Working Women of Tampa Bay and she also volunteers with many local organizations in her free time. When she and her husband are not spending time with their two dogs, trying out new restaurants or enjoying the outdoors, they travel the world extensively, having been to 53 countries at present and working towards a goal of making that 70 before her 50th birthday in 2029. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Welcome to the podcast Jamie. 4:09 I spent semesters in Spain and Italy, making the most of my time there by traveling extensively. I also participated in what was then called a January term, which took me to East Asia, where I visited Japan, China, and South Korea. After graduating, I knew I wanted travel to remain a priority in my life, and it always did. However, it wasn't until 15 to 20 years later that I finally entered the travel industry. 7:13 I'd love to talk about a couple of places, if that's okay. The first one that comes to mind is Florence. For me, it holds a special place in my heart, and I fell in love with it all over again when I visited this past summer with my husband. It had been about 20 years since I was last in Florence, where I studied abroad. 9:01 I also have a deep passion for Africa, which is why I chose to specialize in this region. My experiences there have been truly transformative. Being in the wilderness, completely unplugged, and experiencing nature in its rawest and purest form has been life-changing. On top of that, connecting with the warmth and hospitality of the people has made such a profound impact on me that I find myself returning again and again. 16:02 We were truly impressed by the ostrich—it was better than any filet mignon I've ever had. 20:52 Sustainability is such an important aspect of our industry. It's essential to preserve these treasures so future generations can enjoy them just as we have. As travel professionals, we need to be educators, not just advisors. This means vetting our partners to ensure they're genuinely committed to sustainable practices and missions. It also involves staying informed and continuously educating ourselves about the industry's efforts toward sustainability. 37:43 That's an interesting question. I think I'd thank myself for being bold enough to try new things and for taking the leap to learn from others. I'm grateful for surrounding myself with a diverse group of people who taught me so much about thinking more broadly and viewing things from different perspectives. You can find Jamie Thomas at: Website | Instagram | Facebook Thank you for joining me on Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! More women have non traditional jobs these days, and still don't have adequate clothing to wear - the men's styles are simply copied and pasted into women's "styles", which can lead to harm in the workplace as they don't fit correctly.Brenda (Maxx) Cumby McGee has come up with the solution. As a construction worker and fashion model, she has paired her unique expertise and skills to create one of the very few styles of work pants designed specifically for women. Just a few features include deeper pockets, D-rings on the band, reinforced inner thighs, and kneepads. Maxx and her best friend created Gott Street Blues with one goal in mind - to design working clothes for working women. She's starting with the pant, and then from there, the sky isn't even the limit. Not in construction? No worries, these are also perfect for landscaping, gardening, etc. Find GSB pants at https://gottstreetblues.com, connect with Maxx on LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram. In a recent address, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen said, “It is still too hard to be a working parent.” Her words highlight a significant challenge in America, especially for mothers. Inspired by my college research paper, we'll dive into the American childcare system and its negative impact on working women. We will start with an overview of the current state of the U.S. childcare system. and then discuss how traditional gender norms exacerbate the issue. Following this, we'll examine the direct effects of childcare challenges on women's career paths, and consider some interesting potential solutions to the childcare crisis. I'm no expert, but I have researched this topic extensively and hope to provide an informative and engaging discussion!Support the Show.
Who knew that I would be so excited to talk about perimenopause and menopause today? The truth is, I have been searching for the right expert to chat with about this important topic. And Georgie Kovacs, my guest today, is exactly the right person to lead us through this. Why? Well, selfishly, I am in perimenopause, and I want to understand how to deal with this. Many of my coaching clients have shared they suffer from brain fog, tiredness, and more, which I learned can be attributed to this stage of life.As Maya Angelou said, “Once we know better, we can do better.” We can do better by understanding our bodies and how this change impacts all women. We can do better by advocating for ourselves at the doctor's office. We can do better by spreading the word to other women. So, let's jump in!During our conversation, Georgie and I chatted about:What the symptoms of perimenopause are and how long this transitionary period can last for women. Why Georgie thinks talking about perimenopause at work is taboo and what we can do about it.How much perimenopause costs U.S. companies per year.Standing in our values in professional and personal situations. How I may have confused my burnout symptoms as part of early perimenopause. Or maybe it was a mix of both? How we can advocate for ourselves along this journey, including finding practitioners that look at various remedy sources for our symptoms.Georgie's podcast FemPower Health, her free resources on her site, and where she's taking FemPower Health next.

Caoilinn Hughes' novel The Alternatives revolves around the four Flattery sisters, each with a more impressive career or degree than the last, all with a profound grief for the parents they lost at a young age. When one of the sisters purposely goes off the grid, the other three are reunited in the Irish countryside in an attempt to find her. In today's episode, NPR's Andrew Limbong asks Hughes about crafting the witty dialogue between the sisters, writing side characters that jump off the page and getting feedback from her own siblings. Summary In the latest episode of the "Muscles and Mindset Podcast," titled "Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss," Dr. Ali Novitsky explores the innovative approach to weight loss through the lens of GLP-1 agonists. Dr. Novitsky begins the discussion by shedding light on the pivotal role of GLP-1 agonists in the weight loss journey, explaining how these medications can be transformative for individuals grappling with weight management challenges. She underscores the necessity of integrating key elements of obesity medicine—nutrition, exercise, and mindset work—alongside these medications to foster comprehensive wellness. Delving deeper, Dr. Novitsky examines the influence of hormones such as leptin, ghrelin, insulin, and cortisol on the weight loss process, especially when coupled with GLP-1 agonists. She elucidates how these medications aid in regulating satiety and slowing gastric emptying, while also emphasizing the criticality of preserving muscle mass through suitable protein consumption and strength training. A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the exploration of cognitive behavioral therapy as a tool for emotional and mental health management during the weight loss journey. Dr. Novitsky discusses the importance of emotional regulation and recognizing cognitive distortions to support enduring weight loss endeavors. Dr. Novitsky introduces her forthcoming program, "Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss," tailored for high-performing women who are current users of GLP-1 agonists. This program promises personalized coaching, bespoke exercise routines, nutritional advice, and emotional support, all aimed at helping participants reach their weight loss objectives effectively. Additionally, Dr. Novitsky mentions upcoming webinars for those interested in learning more about the program and registration details. She also talks about a separate series tailored for healthcare providers who prescribe GLP-1 agonists, with the goal of enhancing their patient care approaches. In summary, the episode emphasizes a holistic approach to weight loss, advocating for the integration of medication, nutrition, exercise, and mindset work for optimal outcomes. Dr. Novitsky expresses her enthusiasm for continuing to support individuals on their weight loss journeys and empowering them to take charge of their health through the "Muscles and Mindset Podcast." Takeaways GLP-1 agonists can be life-changing for weight loss, but they are not a standalone solution. The other three pillars of obesity medicine (nutrition, exercise, and mindset work) are crucial for optimal weight loss. Hormones like leptin and ghrelin play a role in weight loss and can be improved with medication and lifestyle changes. Emotional regulation and cognitive behavioral therapy are important for managing emotions and thoughts related to food. Maintaining muscle mass is essential for successful weight loss. Ali offers a program, Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss, for high-performing women on a GLP-1 agonist.
