This week I talked to attorney and writer Savala Nolan. Her newest book, Good Woman, which was named a Most Anticipated Feminist Book of 2026 by Ms. Magazine, is out now. I got to read an early copy and loved it. She writes with raw honesty about making herself smaller, both literally and metaphorically, in order to be a good daughter, a good wife, a good mother, and all the ways she allowed herself to be diminished to keep the peace, and how many others do this too. The 12 essays blend cultural commentary, personal experience, reportage, and history. We talked about the vulnerable process of writing a personal book of essays, including writing about divorce, motherhood, and the importance of respecting one's appetite in every way, from creative to physical. I always love talking to Savala and loved getting to catch up with her here. Let us know if you listen.

Ken Bence traces an 18+ year arc from public-school TEFL to PGCE, then into a fast-growing bilingual school in Shanghai where rapid expansion pulled him into hiring, standards alignment, and early leadership. Seeking the IB bridge, he lands in Kuwait and grows into K–12 instructional coaching with the help of strong mentors, then tackles leadership fairs, multiple offers, and a vice head role that drops him back into China just as COVID reshapes borders and daily life. In a recent episode of the "Discovering Grayslake" podcast, host David Wolf sat down with Nick and Katelyn from Affordable Interiors, a beloved local business specializing in kitchen, bath, and home remodeling. Their conversation offers a treasure trove of insights for anyone considering a home renovation, as well as a heartfelt look at what makes Grayslake such a special place to live and work. Whether you're a homeowner thinking about a remodel, a business owner looking to deepen your community ties, or simply a Grayslake resident who loves supporting local, this episode is packed with actionable advice, expert perspectives, and a genuine sense of hometown pride. Table of Contents The Remodeling Process: What to Expect Personalized Design: Marrying Form and Function Managing Timelines and Expectations Navigating the Emotional Journey of Remodeling Community Roots: The Value of Local Connections Actionable Tips for Homeowners Supporting Local: Why It Matters Final Thoughts: Building Homes, Building Community 1. The Remodeling Process: What to Expect Nick and Katelyn demystify the remodeling process, emphasizing that a successful project is built on clear communication, careful planning, and a personalized approach. Step-by-Step Breakdown: Initial Consultation:** The journey begins with a phone call to discuss your goals, needs, and vision. Don't worry about the current state of your home—Affordable Interiors prides itself on a judgment-free approach. In-Home Measurement:** A team member visits your home to take precise measurements and assess the project's scope. This ensures that every detail is tailored to your space. Showroom Appointment:** Clients are invited to the downtown Grayslake showroom to explore materials, finishes, and design options. This hands-on experience helps you visualize the possibilities and make informed choices. Detailed Estimate:** After the initial meetings, you'll receive a comprehensive estimate that reflects your unique project, including materials, labor, and timelines. Permits and Inspections:** Affordable Interiors handles all necessary permits and inspections, streamlining the process and ensuring compliance with local regulations. Project Execution:** The team coordinates demo, prep work, and installation, keeping you informed at every stage. Expert Insight: Nick highlights the importance of flexibility and transparency, noting that every project is unique and may require adjustments along the way. Their process is designed to minimize stress and maximize satisfaction. 2. Personalized Design: Marrying Form and Function Remodeling isn't just about following the latest trends—it's about creating a space that reflects your personality, lifestyle, and long-term needs. Key Principles: Timeless Over Trendy:** While blue cabinets and bold islands have had their moment, Nick and Katelyn encourage clients to choose designs that will stand the test of time. Your home should feel like your home, not a showroom. Aging in Place:** Many clients remodel with the intention of staying in their homes for years to come. Katelyn emphasizes the importance of functional layouts, accessible features, and durable materials that support aging in place. Client-Centered Approach:** The design process is collaborative. Katelyn works closely with clients to understand their routines, preferences, and future plans, ensuring the final result is both beautiful and practical. Actionable Advice: Bring inspiration photos, but be open to professional guidance. Think about how you use your space daily—storage, lighting, and flow matter as much as aesthetics. Don't be afraid to express your personality through color, texture, and unique features. 3. Managing Timelines and Expectations One of the most common questions Nick and Katelyn hear is, "How soon can you start?" The answer depends on several factors, and setting realistic expectations is crucial for a smooth experience. Timeline Factors: Cabinet Lead Times:** Some cabinet lines arrive in 2-3 weeks, while others may take up to 3 months. The team schedules demo and prep work accordingly to avoid unnecessary downtime. Permits and Inspections:** Kitchens and bathrooms often require permits and inspections, which can add 4-6 weeks to the timeline. Scope of Work:** Larger projects or those involving structural changes will naturally take longer. Pro Tips: Start planning early, especially if you have a specific deadline (e.g., holidays, family events). Communicate openly about your priorities and constraints. Trust the process—rushing can lead to mistakes or missed details. 4. Navigating the Emotional Journey of Remodeling Remodeling is as much an emotional journey as it is a logistical one. Katelyn and Nick are keenly aware of the vulnerability clients feel when their homes are in transition. Common Emotions: Anxiety:** Seeing your kitchen or bathroom gutted can be unsettling, even if you know it's temporary. Excitement:** Watching the transformation unfold—tile, flooring, cabinets—brings anticipation and joy. Relief and Pride:** The final reveal is often met with relief, pride, and a renewed love for your home. How Affordable Interiors Supports Clients: Clear Communication:** The team explains each step, so clients know what to expect and when. Empathy:** They encourage clients to give themselves grace and not feel embarrassed about the "before" state of their home. Celebrating Progress:** Milestones are acknowledged, and clients are kept in the loop, making the journey more enjoyable. 5. Community Roots: The Value of Local Connections Affordable Interiors isn't just a business—it's a neighbor. Nick and Katelyn live in Grayslake, their showroom is housed in a historic building, and they're active members of the Grayslake Chamber of Commerce. Community Involvement: Local Events:** From the Festival of Lights parade to the Saint Patrick's Day parade, Nick and Katelyn love participating in community celebrations. Charity and Support:** They regularly donate to local causes, such as the bachelorette auction benefiting a family in need. Showroom Dog, Cooper:** Their trilingual cocker spaniel, Cooper, is a local celebrity and adds a welcoming touch to the showroom. Why It Matters: Local businesses reinvest in the community, creating jobs and supporting local causes. Familiar faces and personal relationships foster trust and accountability. Community pride is contagious—when businesses thrive, so does the town. 6. Actionable Tips for Homeowners Thinking about starting your own remodeling project? Here's what Nick and Katelyn recommend: Don't Wait for "Perfect" Conditions:** Many clients put off remodeling because they're embarrassed by their home's current state. The team at Affordable Interiors has seen it all—no judgment, just solutions. Start with a Conversation:** A simple phone call can clarify your options and set the process in motion. Be Honest About Your Needs:** Whether you're planning to age in place, need more storage, or want a fresh look, share your goals openly. Plan for the Unexpected:** Remodeling can uncover surprises (old wiring, plumbing issues). Build a little flexibility into your budget and timeline. Stay Engaged:** Visit the showroom, ask questions, and stay involved in decisions. Your input is invaluable. 7. Supporting Local: Why It Matters The episode underscores the importance of supporting local businesses—not just for economic reasons, but for the sense of connection and pride it brings. How to Support Local: Shop and Hire Locally:** Choose local businesses for your needs, from remodeling to dining and beyond. Spread the Word:** Share positive experiences with friends, family, and on social media. Participate in Community Events:** Attend parades, markets, and fundraisers to strengthen community bonds. Practice Kindness:** As the podcast host suggests, perform random acts of kindness—smile, hold a door, thank a service worker. Small gestures make a big difference. 8. Final Thoughts: Building Homes, Building Community The story of Affordable Interiors is a testament to what makes Grayslake special: hard work, personal relationships, and a deep commitment to community. Nick and Katelyn's expertise, empathy, and local pride

This is a deep, grounded conversation with Bruce McGlenn, founder of Human Nature Hunting, whose life has been shaped by four decades of hunting, ancestral knowledge, and an uncompromising relationship with the land. This episode goes far beyond hunting as a skill or sport and enters the terrain of initiation, masculinity, responsibility, and what it means to participate directly in life and death. Bruce speaks with rare clarity about the psychological and spiritual cost of modern disconnection—from food, from nature, and from our role as participants rather than consumers—and how the hunt restores something ancient and intact within the human nervous system. Drawing from lived experience, not ideology, this conversation explores why so many men feel uninitiated, why comfort has not delivered fulfillment, and how hunting reveals a forgotten way of being human that still lives beneath the surface.Time Stamps(00:00) Ecosystem > Economy(00:35) Opening Conversation(05:56) Introducing Bruce McGlenn(09:01) Bruce's Early Hunting Memories(16:26) The Philosophy of Hunting(20:06) Hunting and Family Bonds(39:20) The Emotional Journey of Hunting(49:47) The Ethical Eating Debate(56:46) Personal Reflections on Meat Consumption(01:01:30) The Future of Hunting and Conservation(01:03:03) Bruce's First Hunting Experience(01:06:58) Hunting as a Man's Rite of Passage(01:19:18) Bruce Hunting With His WifeGuest Linkshttps://www.humannaturehunting.com/ https://www.instagram.com/humannaturehunting/ Connect with UsJoin our membership Friends of the TruthRise Above The Herd Take the Real AF Test NowDiscover Your Truth Seeker ArchetypeWatch all our episodesConnect with us on TelegramFollow us on InstagramAccess all our links

Why do most referral campaigns fail? Because they ignore the emotional core of the client experience. In her book, The Referral Client Experience, Stacey Brown Randall explains that anxiety and uncertainty define the initial "New Client" stage. If you don't address that "quiet voice" of concern with clear onboarding and emotional reassurance, you undermine trust. You must identify your Referral Hot Zones—the specific moments in your journey when clients are most likely to talk about you. These are not random. Analyze where past referrals originated (e.g., after successful project completion, during a specific milestone).

In this heartfelt episode of Healthy Waves, gerontologist and caregiver expert Janice Goldmintz joins host Avik to unpack the unspoken emotional weight of caring for aging parents—especially when dementia or serious illness flips the parent-child dynamic. Drawing from her master's in gerontology and her own decade-long journey caring for both parents with Alzheimer's, Janice offers raw, practical wisdom: how to hold grief and love at the same time, why asking for help isn't weakness, how to make big care decisions without tearing the family apart, and simple self-care habits that actually work when you're running on empty. This conversation is for every adult child who feels guilty, overwhelmed, or terrified they're “parenting their parents” wrong. Key Takeaways The hardest shift isn't the logistics—it's emotionally moving from “child” to “care advocate” while still feeling like a kid inside. Acknowledge the emotions (guilt, resentment, grief) instead of suppressing them—pretending you're “fine” only makes burnout worse. No one does this perfectly—even trained gerontologists make mistakes. Progress, not perfection, is the goal. Top 3 family mistakes: (1) Assuming everyone will contribute equally, (2) Waiting until crisis to plan, (3) Refusing to adapt when the original plan stops working. Mindset shift that changes everything: Stop expecting fairness; assign tasks by strength, not equality—someone's great at finances, someone else at emotional support. Self-care isn't selfish—it's self-centered (centering yourself so you can keep showing up). Put your oxygen mask on first. Sustainable caregiver habits: 10-minute walks (even in a mall), scheduled dog walks, quick breathing breaks, reading for knowledge/power, respite stays at retirement homes. With dementia: “Go where they are.” If Dad thinks he's on the farm, ask about the animals—enter their reality to create moments of joy and deeper connection. Final truth: This journey is messy, exhausting, heartbreaking… and one of the most rewarding acts of love you'll ever give. What if achieving everything you dreamed of still left you feeling empty? In this enlightening episode of the Work You Love podcast, host Danielle Mizrachi sits down with Jerome Myers, founder of Exit to Excellence, to explore what really happens after success. Jerome reveals the emotional aftermath of selling a business—the Exit Paradox—and how he helps founders rediscover meaning beyond money. Together, they unpack why fulfillment, not achievement, is the real finish line, and how to align work with your purpose, joy, and impact. Listeners will leave with a renewed perspective on success: that true wealth isn't measured in dollars, but in the difference you make and the peace you carry. [00:00 – 07:00] The Exit Paradox Jerome shares how he helps founders rediscover meaning after selling their companies The “Exit Paradox”: the grief, loss, and disorientation many feel after achieving financial success His first exit from corporate life revealed the emotional void behind professional wins [07:00 – 13:00] When Success Feels Empty Jerome recounts how a billionaire's public confession revealed a shared struggle among high achievers Research confirmed that post-exit depression is common but rarely discussed The emptiness of “doing” without “being”—learning to untangle identity from occupation [13:00 – 19:00] Redefining Work and Wealth Jerome breaks down the “first four exits” every founder must navigate The unglamorous reality of being a “Chief Everything Officer” The true measure of success: building a business that operates without you [19:00 – 25:00] The Freedom to Pivot Danielle and Jerome discuss how to find joy in work again The “Four I's of Fulfillment”: Interest, Income, Influence, and Impact How to align your career or business with your unique gifts and purpose [25:00 – 31:00] From Liquidity to Legacy The final evolution of a founder: shifting from accumulation to contribution Jerome's call to help others avoid the regret 75% of founders face post-sale Legacy isn't the company you sell—it's the lives you impact afterward [31:00 – 35:00] Living the Work You Love Why fulfillment—not money—is the real game Letting curiosity, generosity, and community guide your next step Simple but powerful reflection: “Does what I'm doing matter to me?” Key Quotes:“Fulfillment is the game. I'm showing you the exact framework I used to go from zero sales to consistent momentum—ultimately passing $550,000 in Etsy revenue. You'll learn the psychological journey every seller goes through, how to pick a tight niche the algorithm actually understands, the cadence for shipping listings without burning out, and the metrics that prove you're on track (including the 1% conversion benchmark). I'll also cover when to layer in marketing (and when not to), which channels compound over time, and the weekly system that keeps growth predictable. What you'll learn • Mindset map: uninformed optimism → informed pessimism → valley of despair → informed optimism → success • Niche strategy: why focus beats “sell everything” and how the algorithm rewards depth • Listing cadence: a simple weekly target to feed the algo and gather data fast • Momentum signals: traffic → favorites → sales (and how to mine listing stats/keywords) • Benchmarks: the 1% conversion rule and how to interpret it at low volumes • Go deeper: multiplying winners, avoiding shiny-object detours • Marketing timing: when to use coupons, sales, and (later) Etsy Ads without wasting budget • Traffic that compounds: Pinterest, YouTube, and blog vs. short-life social posts • The weekly flywheel: research → create → analyze → refine → expand #EtsySelling #EtsySEO #EcommerceTips #SideHustle #PrintOnDemand #SmallBusiness #HandmadeBusiness Grow faster than 99% of Etsy shops
