Playing for Team Human today are Frances Moore Lappé and Adam Eichen from the Small Planet Institute. Lappé and Eichen are out on the road with a mission to reinvigorate “civic courage” and inclusive participation in democracy. Their latest book Daring Democracy Igniting Power, Meaning, and Connection for the America We Want offers a diagnosis of what has come to ail our democracy and recommends the necessary cures, offering concrete examples of ballot initiatives, reforms, and collective organizing happening across the country. Counter to a despairing narrative on the current state of democracy in the U.S., Lappé and Eichen argue that people are indeed rising to take the reigns. Inspired by examples of deep organizing and the convergence of movements in places such as Democracy Spring, Democracy Awakening, and Occupy Wall Street, Lappé and Eichen see power shifting back into the people’s hands. Their analysis of how we got to where we are, coupled with their passion and optimism for change, is both contagious and empowering. In this Team Human conversation, Lappé and Eichen join Douglas to make a case for hope, courage, and optimism in this moment of turmoil and division. Rushkoff begins today’s show with a monologue on the theme of democracy inspired by this conversation. Though it may have been easy to have lost faith in democracy after the 2016 election, perhaps election day is the wrong place to look if we really see democracy in action. It’s a monologue that asks: where does democracy begin for team human?... and lucky for us, today’s guests Frances Moore Lappé and Adam Eichen are ready with the answer. This episode was made possible thanks to listener support. Since then, the two have been working to develop new ways to think and write about campaign finance reform and the democracy movement more broadly.

Most recently, Frances participated in Democracy Spring, a movement committed to taking money out of politics and putting more people in politics, enforcing voter rights, and the Supreme Court understanding that the right to speak must be driven by a meaningful right to be heard. "Hunger," she says, "is not caused by a scarcity of food but a scarcity of democracy." No one is hungry by choice, "hunger is the symptom of powerlessness," and powerlessness is the opposite of democracy.

When I first met Richard Painter some months ago, I thought he must be the loneliest man in the Republican Party. He’s a conservative, and of course, I’m not. But he believes, as I do, that there’s too much money in politics. Now, political insiders know Richard Painter well as President George W. Bush’s White House counselor and chief ethical advisor. He’s now teaching law at the University of Minnesota, and he’s causing heads to turn with a book advocating that we reduce the power of big money in politics. Its title is Taxation Only With Representation: The Conservative Conscience and Campaign Finance Reform. There’s a lot to learn from it, and I urge you to read it, because it is rare today to find a conservative who will admit, as Mr. Painter does, that money corrupts politics and then makes his case with so much passion and logic. His book is also timely because the issue has reached a boiling point this year. Thousands of people descended on Washington just last week in a movement they call Democracy Spring, deliberately getting arrested to protest for cleaner politics and for government liberated from Big Money. Every poll I’ve consulted reveals a deep and substantial support in the country for those objectives. Most Americans seem to agree that rich people should be able to buy more houses than anyone else, buy more cars and more clothes and more gizmos, even take more vacations than any one else, but we don’t think they should be able to buy more democracy than anyone else. Richard Painter joins me now to talk about how to rein in the power of big money in politics so that we are indeed, as his book suggests, government of, by, and for the people.

A participant on the Democracy Spring March of April 2016 joined in Philadelphia, walked to Baltimore, MD, and then decided to leave because of difficulties with 99 Rise co-founder Kai Newkirk, whose organization, and who personally, created and led (and still leads) the march. Democracy Spring just reached its ultimate destination, Washington DC this morning, where they'll be doing a sit-in on the steps of the House of Representatives.

"They were even suggesting that people use Ziploc bags to piss in and properly dispose of them." Mike is (still) playing a supportive role for marchers and also has significant frustrations with Democracy Spring leadership, including Kai Newkirk. Allegations: - Making it extremely difficult to coordinate bathroom breaks for hundreds of people, including resisting a relatively inexpensive idea of hitching a trailer to Mike's truck with porta-potties. And pulling up in their own large and new RV for leadership only. - Forcing people to speak and dress in certain ways. - Dismissing the marchers input, interests, and needs, and stealing the limelight when the cameras and politicians show up.

In recent months we have listened to Donald Trump suggest there might be riots if he is denied the Republican nomination, witnessed several acts of political violence, and now we hear the emerging chants from a group called Democracy Spring promising the largest civil disobedience action in American political history. In our most recent podcast, "Civil Disobedience and the Season of Political Discontent," we examine the current political environment through the lens of Henry David Thoreau's and Martin Luther King's account of civil disobedience. We begin by investigating what Thoreau and King meant by civil disobedience, what makes civil disobedience civil, and how they differ. We conclude the episode by reflecting on the question of whether the coming season of political discontent will remain civil, or if it will slip towards something more ominous. Enjoy.
