When a ship inadvertently spills oil, it's big news. But every three years, ships intentionally dump more oil than the Exxon Valdez, and BP spills combined. This episode highlights a vexing and woefully under-discussed problem. It is made possible by corrupt ship captains who use a so-called “Magic Pipe” that dumps oil discreetly under the water line rather than disposing of it on land as legally required. To learn about this problem, the episode tells the story of Carnival's Caribbean Princess cruise ship, which used such a pipe and was caught, convicted and hit with the biggest fine in history. This case is set in a broader context of other forms of at-sea dumping, such as plastic pollution, and highlights how the sea has long — and perilously — been viewed as a bottomless trash can. Guest Interviews: Annie Leonard, CEO of Greenpeace, creator of “The Story of Plastic” Richard Udell, DOJ Prosecutor on the Caribbean Princess Case.Take the Uncover audience survey! For transcripts of this series, please visit this page.

(This full conversation is from the episode 'Greenpeace at 50:  The Climate Crisis is a Fight Not an Argument' released April 18th, 2022) In this special feature for Earth Day, we focus on just one group: Greenpeace, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The environmental group has been in the headlines again, confronting Russian oil tankers in many ports. They've attracted lots of attention and scored many victories in the years they've been in existence. But it's not enough. The climate crisis is more urgent than ever, the world's not on track to get off fossil fuels in the time we need, and the most vulnerable are paying the heaviest price. In this special, we spend the program with the leadership of Greenpeace, including co-executive Directors, Annie Leonard and Ebony Twilley Martin, the first African American woman to head a "Big Green" group. The changes the group has made to embed racial justice and equity across their organization are going to take time, they admit, but without them, they'll never shift the power structure that's proven so intransigent up to this point. What's it going to take to shift power internally, avoid false solutions, and make the sort of transformation we need, as a nation, and as a group? They say there is no choice. The changes they're making now are essential. We can't bring about a greener, more equitable future with shortcuts.Music Featured in the Middle of the Podcast:  Humpback Mix of “Hope Bay ” by Dazzle Drums,  from the Climate Soundtrack project, produced by DJ's for Climate Action, where producers from around the world were asked to create original music from a ‘climate sample pack' of field recordings gathered during years of Greenpeace expeditions and activism across the globe.GuestsTefere Gebre, Chief Program Officer, Greenpeace USAAnnie Leonard, Co-Executive Director, Greenpeace USAEbony Twilley Martin, Co-Executive Director, Greenpeace USA Full episode notes including related articles and LFShow episodes to watch and/or listen to are posted at https://Patreon.com/theLFShow. The acclaimed filmmakers and social entrepreneurs Annie Leonard (The Story of Stuff) and John de Graaf (Seattle Area Happiness Initiative) pop the Big Question: What's the economy for, anyway? Is it a voracious cycle of perpetual growth and more stuff? Or can we create growth within the natural limits of the planet to produce sufficiency, a high quality of life and real happiness?!

If you’re feeling exhausted by making millions of decisions about shopping and recycling, then this episode will give you hope! In this episode, let’s discuss the video The Story of Change and the key to societal transformation.   I'm a big fan of the free videos created by Annie Leonard and the nonprofit that grew out of her 2007 viral video, The Story of Stuff. If you want a short video to cover the basics of key environmental issues, chances are The Story of Stuff has one. That's why I wasn't surprised when I found their Story of Change video.   In under seven minutes, you can watch the entire Story of Change. So, yup, watch it and use it with your team.   Here are the key points from the Story of Change movie: We are getting the message: We can go green by being better shoppers and recyclers and telling our friends to do the same. If I do this, I've done my part. And if I don't, it's my fault that the planet is being destroyed.   This has some serious shortcomings!   It's not about just voting with our dollars. Real change comes when citizens come together to demand rules that work.   We can learn from successful movements throughout history: Gandhi, the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and the environmental victories here in the 1970s. They didn't nag people to perfect their day-to-day choices. They changed the rules of the game.   Here are the three things to do to change the world: Share a big idea for how things could be better. Millions of ordinary people need to decide, "We will work together until the problem is solved." With big idea and commitment to work together, take action. After I first watched this, I gave a huge sigh of relief. I realized I was exhausting myself focusing on a million shopping and recycling decisions.   Now, I know, my real power is working on these three things: sharing a big idea, getting together with millions of people, and demanding the change we want.   The best way to get millions together is to start with two, then ten, then 100's, and 1000's around the world.   In the movie Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom, they kept using the symbol of an open hand to represent the fingers (individuals) as vulnerable, compared to the closed fist (group) as strong.   It's not enough to try to "be the change". We need to get together and "demand the change" we want to see in this world.   "Living our values in small ways shows ourselves and other we care. So, it's a great place to start. But it's a terrible place to stop. After all, would we even know who Gandhi was if he just sewed his own clothes and then sat back waiting for the British to leave India?" - Annie Leonard, Story of Change   Resource: The Story of Stuff Video Collection Green Team Academy Podcast Episode 23: 10 Lessons for Eco-Leaders from from Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom Share in the Community: How do you feel about all this? Founded in 2007 with Annie Leonard's film of the same title, which has received more than 50 million views, the Story of Stuff Project seeks to provide educational and organizational resources for combating the damaging effects that consumerism has caused the planet and the economy. Included in the discussion: the deep problems our consumerist mode of capitalism causes to our planet; how Nestle is able to put untold millions of gallons of water into its plastic bottles; what citizens can do to break these destructive cycles; and what role Christians and other people of faith can play in providing better stewardship of the planet. Enhancing The Human Experience

This episode of the podcast is all about less.  Specifically, how having less (less stuff, less obligations, and less debt), can help you to have more (more time, more money, and more freedom).  Like most of the topics I discuss on the podcast, this one will definitely come up again.  Because it's such an important aspect of enhancing the human experience. I recently watched Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things.  This is the film about Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn's experience adopting and living a minimalist lifestyle.  I've followed these two characters for years, so I knew it would be good, and it was.  If you're not familiar with these guys, I've put a link to their website in the resources section below.  They're big-time players in the minimalist movement. I've practiced minimalism for some time now.  It's made a big difference in my overall quality of life.  I still have stuff, but I have a lot less of it than I used to.  And I'm happier because of it.  Like everything in life however, we all fall somewhere on the spectrum.  Because compared to The Happy Minimalist (a.k.a. my hero), I'm a hoarder. Show Notes Henry Rollins once said, "The more you own, the more it owns you." Be conscious of what you bring into your life and your space. By practicing conscious consumption, you'll only bring into your life what you truly want and need.  Not what advertisers tell you you want and need. Living deliberately will make you a hard target for advertisers and marketers who aren't necessarily selling you products that will add real value to your life, but more often than not they're just pushing junk for large corporations. There's nothing wrong with corporations, capitalism, or profit.  In fact, all of these are vital to enhancing the human experience.  The key is to learn to be a conscious capitalist and creator.  And to create products and services that are truly beneficial from both a utilitarian and spiritual standpoint. The life cycle of stuff is becoming obscenely short. As with all things in life, it ultimately comes down to balance. How to wake up to your ego-mind's agenda and become a minimalist in one step: Realize that your ego mind will try to fill the soul's need for expansion by adding more and more stuff to your life, in a never-ending cycle. Here's a great explanation of how a chariot is a metaphor for the senses, the mind, the intellect, the body, and the soul. One Sentence Summary: When you wake up to the fact that your ego-mind will never be satisfied by more stuff, you transcend the illusion that things will ever give you the fulfillment and connection you're longing for in life. Quote Of The Week: Does this add value to my life, and if not, I have to be willing to let go of it." ~ Joshua Fields Millburn Resources Mentioned: becomingminimalist.com - Joshua Becker's great website about living a minimalist life. theminimalists.com - The website ran by Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn.
