Episode 73: Keyon Harrold. Everywhere I turn, I see Keyon Harrold. He's widely regarded as one of the greatest trumpeters alive today, pushing the new jazz generation forward with power and soul. His solo album Foreverland was GRAMMY-nominated this year for Best Alternative Jazz Album, and his resume is stacked — Jay-Z, Common, Erykah Badu, Diana Ross, Mac Miller, Robert Glasper, the Count Basie Orchestra, Terrace Martin — and he played all the trumpet parts in the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead. Keyon is a dear friend and an incredible human being. He drops so much wisdom in this episode and truly inspired me with his words. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the great Keyon Harrold. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. I have another 3 things to tell you. Tomorrow, as in Sunday 1st December, I will be hosting 3 Zoom Calls for Patrons, where you can ask me anything. This is a reminder for those of you already on Patreon. And if you're not but want to get on the call then you could just sign up for $1 and join in the conversation. The calls are at 2pm, 5pm and 8pm in Coordinated Universal Time. Which is essentially the same as Greenwich Mean Time but apparently we don't want to show off too much about that. Anyway, hopefully you'll be free then.Second thing to tell you is that tour dates for 2025 have been provisionally agreed. They are May 17-26th and Oct 11-20th. The first tour will be in Istanbul for five days before visiting Ephesus and other sites in Western Anatolia. While the October tour will also spend five days in Istanbul before visiting Nicaea and Cappadocia. Remember these are provisional dates before you ink them into your diary. But they should be made official soon. Email me thehistoryofbyzantium@gmail.com to get on the mailing list so you can get booking information as soon as it's available. Finally you may have a heard an unfamiliar voice introducing this update. That was Kirin Tsang from Frugalflyer.ca. Trumpeter, singer and composer Keyon Harrold gained a lot of attention for his contribution to the Don Cheadle film Miles Ahead, where he played all of the Miles Davis parts on that Grammy-winning soundtrack. But Keyon's first professional gig was with the rapper Common, and throughout his career he's moved effortlessly between the worlds of jazz, hip hop, soul and R&B, as a trumpeter, and, as a singer and songwriter. His new album, his third, is called Foreverland, and Keyon Harrold and his band PLAY some of it, in-studio. (Serious emphasis on play. The band is a joy to watch! – Caryn Havlik) Set List: 1. Find Your Peace, feat. Stout 2. Don't Lie, feat. Malaya 3. Beautiful Day, feat. Malaya and Stout Foreverland by keyon harrold
The gang breaks down the UNM men's basketball team's convincing 95-75 win over San Jose State. All five Lobo starters scored in double figures and JT Toppin finished with his seventh double-double of the season, which ties former Lobo great Kenny Thomas' freshman record. The gang also looks ahead to Sunday's matchup with Nevada and former UNM head men's basketball coach Steve Alford.
Trumpeter/composer Keyon Harrold was born and raised in Ferguson, MO to a musical family. He is the son of pastors and one of 16 children. As a boy, a trumpet was placed in his hands, and the rest is history. He moved to New York to study at The New School in the 1990s and became part of a legendary generation of musicians associated with the neo soul movement, including Common, Bilal, Roy Hargrove, The Roots, and Robert Glasper. Harrold is a reliable and sought after player among big acts, and he's worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Eminem, Maxwell, Mac Miller and Snoop Dogg. At the same time he's a seriously gifted jazz improviser and composer, who was mentored by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, and who was once referred to as “the future of the trumpet” by Wynton Marsalis. He supplied all of the trumpet playing in Don Cheadle's Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, playing to match Cheadle's on-screen performance as Miles. The soundtrack to the film won a Grammy. But while Keyon has enjoyed what might appear to be a charmed career, he has also had a series of unexpected setbacks and heavy lived experiences that contribute to his musical journey. His new album Foreverland is a celebration of his multidimensional career and his sensitivity as an artist, proving that Harrold is a master of channeling his lived experience through his horn. The album features 10 original songs that explore themes of empowerment, positivity, love, loss, and vulnerability. And it's a family affair — nearly every musician is a longtime friend, including Common, Robert Glasper, Laura Mvula, Chris Dave, Marcus Gilmore, Nir Felder, Randy Runyon, BIGYUKI, Burniss Travis and many others. Here he talks about Foreverland, how a series of losses in his life ultimately led him to make “something beautiful, something positive, something inspiring,” and his reflections on the early days of his career as part of a community of like minded musicians who were “always open.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast
We'd stopped for gas next to an Interstate that takes you at 75 MPH across long miles of desert. I love the west. That's where I saw the sign: "Dead End - 3 Miles Ahead." I thought, "I wonder if anyone ever said, 'I'm not sure that's true of that old dirt road. I think I'll drive that way and check it out for myself.'" Nope, We got back on the Interstate, and of course, I had to see where that other road went. Sure enough, that bumpy road ended three miles later in the middle of nothing in the desert...right next to a road that speeds you to a lot of great destinations. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Driving Hard On a Dead-End Road." Why would anyone drive down a road that goes nowhere, especially when there's another road nearby that takes you to some wonderful places? Sadly, people are doing it all the time. Not with their vehicle, but with their life! Maybe because they missed the dead-end sign or they didn't believe it. Someone who's listening right now may be making that very mistake and not even realizing it. God has put up a sign that warns us to avoid the dead-end streets. In fact, He's written in some big, bold letters. It's posted in our word for today from the Word of God in James 1:14-15. It says: "Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death." That's pretty clear. Every sinful choice is a dead-end street. It leaves you dead at the end. Of course, temptation never announces where it's taking you; it only gives you the "goodies" that it seems to be offering. Sin says, "This may be wrong but it will give you love." You go for it, and you end up more lonely or used. Sin says, "Don't worry. This will give your life some excitement!" You go for it, and you end up hating yourself for what you've done. Sin says, "Come on, you'll feel better about yourself." You drive down the road and you end up feeling worse about yourself. Sin always kills. It always kills your self-respect, it kills people's trust in you, it kills your reputation, people you love, your future, your closeness to God. First, sin fascinates you, then it assassinates you. But the road looks so promising that you blow by God's "Dead End" sign. Jesus said, "Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it" (Matthew 7:13). What's important is not how nice the road looks but where it's going to take you, and God has made that ironclad clear! Don't waste any more time on a road that's ultimately going to leave you in the middle of nowhere, even if you can't see that now. God's Word still proves true. When we don't find what we hope to find on a road that we should never be on, we sometimes make a choice that only makes it worse. We decide we need to do more of what already hasn't worked! God says to you, as recorded in Isaiah 48, "I am the Lord your God who teaches you what is best for you...If only you had paid attention to My commands, your peace would have been like a river, your righteousness like the waves of the sea." Now that sounds like where you'd like to be, doesn't it? Then it's time to turn back from a road you never should have been on in the first place. What's ahead is only disappointment, despair and death. Within your reach is the Jesus-road - the one that leads to life! He's waiting to welcome you, forgive you and then lead you onto the road you were made to be on! I want you to know how to begin this relationship with Jesus. That's what our website is there for, let me urge you to go there this very day - ANewStory.com. Here's the choice you have in God's own words: "I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live" (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Five-time Grammy Award winning musician Robert Glasper was raised in Texas and went to school with Beyonce before heading off to New York to pursue his love of jazz music playing with some notables of the genre. However, Glasper's musical horizons extend way beyond jazz and while he won a Grammy for his work on the music for the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead he has won another four for his R&B albums, mainly the Black Radio series. Robert Glasper will be appearing at Bluesfest Melbourne and Bluesfest in Byron Bay as well as gigs in Brisbane and Sydney. This Rhythms podcast is sponsored by Bluesfest Melbourne.
Tonight's Jazz Feature is a special one as composer arranger Gil Evans did not record many albums under his name. He became prominent as an important collaborator with Miles Davis and they produced three important and iconic albums, "Miles Ahead", "Porgy and Bess" and "Sketches of Spain". Davis was the principal soloist and the arrangements for the accompanying orchestra was conducted and arranged by Gil Evans. A magical combination!. Evans, through these famous recordings was able to form his own band and record under his own name. Tonight's Jazz feature album is one of his very finest and is called "Out of The Cool". It was a marvelous band that had that exclusive Gil Evans sound and featured many of his favorite players. We hear great solos by trumpeter Johnny Coles, trombonists Jimmy Knepper and bass trombonist Tony Studd, tenor saxophonist Budd Johnson and then young bassist Ron Carter and drum great Elvin Jones. The band was beautifully recorded and this date became a milestone in Gil Evans' career. "out of the Cool" is tonight's Jazz Feature and it's a treat!

Even though consumers spend an average of seven hours a day online, it's more challenging than ever for marketers to get digital mileage out of their efforts. Consumers are being inundated with an average of 10K ads a day across all platforms and they're not happy about it. In fact, 91% of people believe ads are more intrusive now compared to two or three years ago, and 79% believe they're being tracked by retargeted ads. As such, it's common practice for online buyers to ignore ads, install blockers, hide sponsored posts, decline cookies, unsubscribe from lists, and participate in other actions that reduce irrelevant exposure to brands. ... L'Rain, Keyon Harrold, Hinako Omori and Sinkane discuss not getting stuck on the details, the visceral versus the cerebral, why there's nothing like those vibrations in the room where you play, and why writing music is like walking to the shops. L'Rain is an experimental multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist from New York, who makes music that is an intoxicating blend of R&B, free jazz, noise music, and orchestral pop. She was also once in an Iron Maiden covers band. Jazz trumpeter, vocalist, songwriter, and producer Keyon Harrold was born into a musical family of 17 children. He's provided instrumentation for Beyonce, 50 Cent, Jay Z, former Music Life guest Gregory Porter and Mary J Blige, as well as being a trumpet stunt double in the film Miles Ahead. Hinako Omori is a musician and producer with a love for synthesisers who was born in Yokohoma, Japan, and is now based in London. She's worked with artists including Kae Tempest, EOB, and Georgia. You may recognise our host Sinkane's voice, as the Sudanese-American multi-instrumentalist and singer has previously hosted the Music Life show, chatting to the likes of David Byrne, St Vincent, Cautious Clay, Emel Mathlouthi and Vagabon.
This recording by Miles Davis and the Gil Evans Orchestra is one of the great iconic recordings in Jazz. Recorded and issued in 1957 It marked the first of a trio of recordings by Miles Davis and Gil Evans. "Porgy and Bess" followed then the famous "Sketches of Spain". This was however the first and it put arranger/composer Gil Evans in the spotlight. This recording is a little different as it consists of alternate takes from these famous recording sessions. Nothing is really altered here except the solos by Miles Davis on flugelhorn (a larger more mellow trumpet). It is an interesting recording and compares favorably with the originally issued classic. It is not in any way second rate. If you know the original recording by heart, this will be a delightful surprise. Have fun!

This album was done in May of 1957 and represented a grand reunion of the solo ability of Miles Davis, who plays flugelhorn throughout the album and the arranging and conducting of Gil Evans. A perfect union of two great musical souls. The 18 to 19 piece orchestra is primarily brass with trumpets, trombones, french horns and a tuba and there are reeds, oboe, flutes, clarinets and bass clarinet and one alto saxophone (Lee Konitz). There is no piano and Paul Chambers plays bass and Arthur Taylor plays drums. The album which came out on Columbia Records was an instant Jazz hit and had rave reviews from the critics. The 10 selections are segued together continuously in the form of a suite. Unique programming for it's time. It was truly an instant classic and marked the first of a trio of classics from Miles Davis and Gil Evans. The second was their interpretation of Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess" and the third was the amazing "Sketches of Spain". "Miles Ahead" is still miles ahead despite it's age! Our Jazz Feature tonight!
