Follow Up 01:13 Energy regulators scrutinizing data center use reject Amazon bid Late Friday, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rejected a proposal that would have allowed an Amazon data center to co-locate with an existing nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. The commission voted it down 2-1 FERC chairman Willie Phillips said that the commission should encourage the development of data centers and semiconductor manufacturing as national security and economic development priorities. Commissioners Mark Christie and Lindsay See (both R) voted to reject the proposal, while Davis Rosner and Judy Change (D) didn't vote. Talen Energy, who signed the agreement, drew challenges from neighboring utilities AEP and Exelon – who challenged the novel arrangement, arguing it would unfairly shift costs of running the broader grid to other consumers. FERC's order found the region’s grid operator, PJM Interconnection, failed to show why the proposal was necessary and prove such a deal would be limited to the Susquehanna plant given the widespread interest in placing data centers next to power plants. Talen said the ruling would have a chilling effect on the region’s economic development and it is weighing its options. The sister plant to the ill-fated Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear reactor in Pennsylvania is getting a new life. In this episode of Grid Talk, host Marty Rosenberg interviews Dan Eggers, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Constellation. Constellation will pay $1.6 billion to refurbish Unit 1 at Three Mile Island by 2028. It sits near Unit 2, the reactor that suffered a partial meltdown in 1979. Unit 1 is an independent reactor, and its long-term operation was not impacted by the Unit 2 accident. Unit 1 closed in 2019 due to financial conditions, but Microsoft has now agreed to purchase all the energy from the plant to meet demand for its data centers.“They are undeniably a sustainability leader,” Eggers said of Microsoft. “When we realized that this was a viable project in the sense that we could bring it back from a mechanical and technical perspective, we brought the opportunity to them, explained what it could be, and they were very enthusiastic.” Eggers says the need for additional generation made them take another look at TMI Unit 1. “We ran it for 20 years. It ran incredibly well, safely, reliably, dependably over that time,” said Eggers.Daniel L. Eggers is the executive vice president and chief financial officer for Constellation. In this role, he is responsible for leading the execution of all financial activities for the Constellation business. He serves on the Constellation Executive Committee, which sets strategy and direction for the company.Eggers joined Exelon in 2016. Prior to that he was with Credit Suisse for 18 years with a focus on energy-related sectors. Eggers received a bachelor's degree in Finance from Texas Christian University and received the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 2000. He also completed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Reactor Technology Course in 2023.

Scott MacKenzie and Brian Hronchek discuss the importance of people in industrial innovation and the challenges faced in the reliability, maintenance, and asset management sectors. Brian shares his background, including his service in the Marines and transition to the reliability field at US Steel. They highlight the disconnect between the availability of technology and the lack of trained personnel, attributing it to a shift in corporate focus from employees and customers to shareholders in the 1970s. Brian emphasizes that investing in employee training and development can increase retention and productivity. They conclude that a cultural shift towards valuing people is crucial for long-term success in industry. Action Items [ ] Connect with Brian Hronchek on LinkedIn. Brian applied for a reliability position at US Steel and quickly realized the importance of reliability principles, which aligned with his military experience. Scott and Brian discuss the challenges of embracing reliability and asset management within organizations, emphasizing the need for continuous education. Brian explains the root cause of these challenges, tracing it back to the shift in corporate focus from employees and customers to shareholders in the 1970s. Impact of Corporate Focus on Training and Maintenance Brian attributes the decline in training and maintenance to the influence of Milton Friedman and the shift towards shareholder focus. Scott shares a personal experience of a company going public and the immediate change in focus from customers to shareholders. Brian and Scott discuss the disconnect between the need for trained personnel and the reluctance of organizations to invest in training and retention. Brian emphasizes the importance of understanding where real value is created, such as job planning
Discussing the real return on investment of properly aligning rotating equipment. As there is a renewed focus on reliability and vibration monitoring, I focus on a root cause. This week on EJR, I will discuss the latest updates on the WestLake Landfill/Coldwater Creek disaster in St. Louis, Mo. Multiple communities have been poisoned by nuclear waste that was illegally dumped by the US government and their corporate partners. To add further insult to injury, St. Louisans were kept in the dark regarding the nuclear threat in THEIR OWN BACKYARDS. It took the action of a local group of moms to force the truth. Just Moms has done the work neither political party was willing to consider. This is our first story. The second story is about the growth of ultra-MAGA extremists running for office. This time, the lead bigot is Anthony Sabatini who is running for the US Congress. Sabatini has gone on record via twitter clearly stating that he intends to DESTROY the political 'Left." This threat can only be viewed for what it is--criminal incitement to lead a genocide sometime in the future. I will discuss. We will also have a segment of "My Little Margie" and the Jackass of the Week Award. We will also enjoy the erudite stylings of Randy Rainbow. Come join me. Jeanine

Technology plays a part in every aspect of our lives, so diversity in tech is critical – and can benefit both the tech industry and society at large. If you've ever helped a child go to a public restroom, you might have an understanding of what we mean. Whether it's the height of the sink, the toilet or the light switch, a child struggles to use many public facilities. This stems from a lack of diversity – if only one type of person is designing from their own experiences, society suffers. People can only extrapolate so much – we need diversity in tech (and in all fields) to account for diverse experiences of life. In this special episode of ISG's Digital Dish, we honor Black History Month and shine a light on what it's like to be a BIPOC woman in the tech industry. Missy Lawrence speaks to Tiera Gray, Vice President, Office of the CIO at Exelon. Tiera shares her insights and first-hand experience of the challenges and opportunities faced by many minorities in the industry today. Plus, hear Tiera's valuable advice for girls and women wanting to carve out a fulfilling and rewarding career in the tech space. And find out why hair is a crucial part the conversation. Have you heard of the CROWN act? If not, we'll catch you up to speed in the post-interview debrief with hosts Lois Coatney and Jeanne Cuff.
