Welcome back to Pushing Forward with Alycia | A Disability Podcast Where disabilities find their voice. This week Alycia Anderson welcomes her friend, Brian McComak, CEO of Hummingbird Humanity, an expert in DEI, HR culture change and employee experience, and an openly gay man with a disability. Brian shares his experiences with mental health, depression, anxiety and the challenges of living with HIV, emphasizing the need to break free from outdated stigmas surrounding HIV, and how ultimately learning to live with his disabilities has enriched his ability to help corporations create workplace environments where all humans thrive. Brian explores: The importance of acknowledging the intersections of identity. The privilege that comes with his appearance as a white cisgender man. The need for the stereotypical white male allies in the DEI movement. Advocacy for human-centered leadership that encourages authenticity at work. Embracing the uniqueness of belonging over fitting in. The transformation of HIV management through science. Championing workplace environments where all humans thrive. As they wrap up, Brian offers a powerful well-being tip: pause and ask, "Am I okay right now?" Focusing on gratitude in the present moment can transform challenging situations into healthier ones. On our first episode of WWAM, I talk with Teresa Marie Sadlowski, a charge nurse of a hospital in LBC, about how teenage acne affected her adolescence…and more importantly how it didn’t. We also talk about how her experience in the high fashion industry led her to become an advocate for body positivity. But, I was most impacted by how addressing her depression, she was able to better cope with the death of a loved one, and find the support she needed to make the jump into the career she’s in now. The most admirable thing about "Tadow" is how she is able to self reflect and pause to tend to her needs. That doesn't make her selfish, in fact, it makes her a better caregiver, nurturer, and listener. If you are struggling with some very strong emotions, please pause for self love, listen to yourself, and reach out for help. 1-888-640-5174 Depression Hotline, 1-800-273-8255 Suicide Hotline *Music by Buyepongo, Por Tu Amor, Buyepongo EP album https://buyepongo.bandcamp.com/album/buyepongo-ep

In this episode our intrepid podcasters continue to tackle difficult subjects in a awkward and hopefully endearing manner. While there is laughter, this episode of The Art Of Giving Up touches on a very serious subject. There are very few subjects on this planet that can draw a line in the sand like bodily autonomy. The right to do with your body and your life are yours, and no one can or should be able to take that from you. Suicide as a right, the ability to end your life when you choose, is controversial. Why would anyone want to stop living, to end the beauty that is life? Unfortunately for some of us, life is not easy. The appeal of an afterlife or void can seem like blessed relief. Taking your life however should not be the first option. The reality of death is that unlike the possibility of life, there is no taking it back. While a choice that is up to YOU to make I implore you; if you feel the need to end your life, please reach out to a friend or family member. If there are regional resources please take advantage of them. We need to remove the stigma surrounding suicide and self-harm. You are Not Alone. Thinking about Suicide? On this week's episode we remember the amazing talent that was Chris Cornell. We also have a very frank and honest conversation about suicide with our special guest, Jen Slepicka (@JenSlepicka), from Suicide Prevention Services (@SPSAmerica). To all of our listeners: - If you feel you are alone- you aren't. - If you feel you aren't loved- you are. - If you feel the world would be better without you- it won't. - If you feel you need help, or someone to talk to, reach out. We love you all ** Disclaomer: The audio on this episode is a little rough. We had some technical difficulties while recording it, but we felt that it was too important of an episode to scrap. ** Suicide Prevention Hotline: 800-273-8255 Depression Hotline: 630-482-9696 Online Chat: http://chat.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/GetHelp/LifelineChat.aspx
Trek Through the Tough Times. All of our lives are full of ups and downs. Though our minds gravitate towards looking back at the good times, the tougher times often equally affect who we become. In this episode of To The Journey, Char and Tristan share how Voyager — and Star Trek in general — has been a constant and uplifting means of support through the more difficult periods in their lives, and how these experiences helped to shape the people they are today. Remember that when you are feeling down, Trek is always there to lend a positive presence. If you are suffering from depression and/or other mental health conditions, you are not alone.
