Transcending Weight Bias and Treating Eating Disorders using a Health at Every Size Model – Interview with Amelia MeachamDid you know that Eating Disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide? About 28.8 million Americans, will have an eating disorder in their lifetime. Eating disorders are also among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose. About 26% of people with eating disorders attempt suicide. There are a variety of different ways of treating Eating Disorders. And today, joining me is Amelia Meacham, who is a Senior at The University of Puget Sound in Washington State. Amelia has a Psychology Major and a Religious Studies minor, she'll be graduating this May with her Bachelor of Arts Degree, and she is also my current practicum student. (Practicum = where Amelia and I create opportunities for her to learn about Eating Disorders and treatment using discussion, session observations, and other creative ways she can learn about individuals who struggle with Eating Disorders). And I have learned so much from Amelia! Today, Amelia will be sharing her thesis about how to treat eating disorders better using a “Health at Every Size” (HAES) model. She will also be my first podcast guest to illustrate what I hope to be a new, shorter format that I'll use with future guests in my next season of Calming the Chaos. Intro to Amelia – Tell us about yourself and about your studiesQuestions1. How did you get interested in treating eating disorders?2. What is a Weight based model of treatment?3. What is a HAES model of treatment? ASDAH has the trademark on HAES, so we'll use this definition in part from the ASDAH website:a. Definition: The Health At Every Size® Principles promote health equity, support ending weight discrimination, and improve access to quality healthcare regardless of size. More info at https://asdah.org/health-at-every-size-haes-approach/4. So what is a “Weight Bias?”5. What barriers to treatment happen when Doctors, Therapists and Dieticians have weight biases?a. Lack of perceived needb. Failure of clinicians to diagnose and refer appropriatelyc. Lack of treatment resources6. How does a HAES Approach to Eating Disorder Treatment help people transcend these barriers and move toward lasting recovery (vs. relapsing)?a. Weight neutral, holistic care …vs. Weight-based careb. Weight inclusive framework, including intuitive eating and self-compassion workc. Intuitive Eating Information can be found at http://www.intuitiveeating.org/d. A non-discriminative type of care that combats the weight-centered approach. The weight-centered approach utilizes the biased BMI measure and discriminates against those in bigger bodies, often intersecting with race, disability, and gender. HAES works to combat this discriminative care. Takeaway: Individuals and organizations that align with the HAES movement advocate against weight bias and discrimination in healthcare. This means that not only is HAES is helping individuals with eating disorders, but it is also combating the issues that influence the development of eating disorders.Resources: ASDAH = Association for Size Diversity and Health at www.asdah.orgNEDA = National Eating Disorders Association at www.nationaleatingdisorders.orgFEAST = Families Empowered and Supporting Treatment of Eating Disorders at www.feast-ed.orgANAD = National Association of Anorexia and Associated Disorders at www.anad.orgIAEDP = International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals at www.iaedp.com

What is orthorexia, the disorder which sees healthy eating go too far?

Do you really know?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 24, 2022 4:39

According to the American National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, around 9% of the US population are affected by an eating disorder. We've all heard of anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, which are among the most commonly diagnosed. But there is also orthorexia. It's called orthorexia, coming from the Latin words “orthos”, meaning correct and “orexis”, meaning appetite. American doctor Steven Bratman coined the term in 1997. To put it simply, orthorexia is a need to eat healthy at all costs, to the extent that it becomes an obsession. Those affected start cutting out certain foods completely, or even seeing them as dangerous when they're not really. Scientifically speaking, orthorexia isn't recognised as an eating disorder in its own right, at least not yet. So it's hard to find any precise data on how many people are affected. But it's still more dangerous than you might think. Isn't eating healthily recommended by medical professionals? How can I find out if I suffer from orthorexia? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions ! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: Will Star Wars: Andor live up to the hype? I'm honored to welcome my friend, Tracey Croner, to The FYX podcast for a conversation on body image: it's a challenging, but seriously important topic in the health and wellness industry that year after year, only seems to become more complex for women. Tracey, who is currently the Charlotte Regional Marketing manager for Orange Theory Fitness, is a force on marketing side of the boutique fitness industry. She's spent the past six years with the Orange Theory brand, and has supported the Charlotte region's growth from just one studio to more than 10. But, there's so much more to Tracey's story than boutique fitness. While we could certainly have a fascinating conversation on what makes for engaging social media, how to effectively hit sales goals, and how to help brands differentiate their offerings, we're pushing the business aside for now. Tracey has spent the majority of adulthood battling anorexia and bulimia. In preparing this episode, Tracey and I agreed it was important to include a trigger warning on the conversation, as we did discuss her behavior and health risks she faced while undereating, overexercising, and continuing to play college basketball. On behalf of The FYX team and Tracey, we would like to note that this episode may be triggering if you or a loved one has been directly affected by an eating disorder. Out of respect for your mental health, we owe you a disclaimer and want to urge anyone who may be struggling with body image and self-esteem to seek help. There are many incredible, free resources available online, a few of which are listed at the bottom of these show notes. If you feel alone and don't have anyone to turn to, you have an automatic support system in both Tracey and me. Tracey launched an Instagram account, Thru Hazel Eyes, dedicated to her ongoing recovery. As you'll hear from Tracey in this episode, one of the best outcomes of her personal struggle has been the discovery of a true passion for mental health awareness and E.D. recovery. Tracey says she is fortunate for everything she's learned through therapy and rehab, and today she is committed to sharing her knowledge in an effort to help others. One of the biggest challenges about battling an eating disorder, Tracey says, is that most people struggle in silence--even when their behaviors are hidden in plain sight. In this episode you'll learn: - How Tracey struggled with losing her identity as a basketball player, and why sports have always been such an important part of who she is - The newfound strength Tracey has discovered in facing her eating disorder head-on, and in being so open with her story today - That the recovery process is ongoing--and that's perfectly okay If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, consider contacting the National Eating Disorder Helpline. The National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders also has a helpline, as well as resources to connect those seeking treatment to mentors, support groups, and medical professionals. Last fall, we ventured into a dark corner of the Internet where people bond over unhealthy behavior, trading tips on starving themselves. This is where sufferers of anorexia and bulimia share so-called "thinspiration" photos, framing eating disorders not as an illness, but as a lifestyle. This pro-eating disorder community has morphed and grown with the Internet, traveling from websites to Tumblrs to Pinterest. Joanna Kay, a 26-year-old who says she's "grown up" with these sites, tells us what they're like — and what makes them so hard to quit. We're re-airing this episode with an update from Joanna, who has since gotten married and started blogging under her real name at Middle Ground Musings. She's now in grad school training to become a mental health counselor. At the same time, she says, she has relapsed, and returned to intensive outpatient treatment program. Listen to the full episode for more. "I lost my voice for 12 years to this illness, and this is really the first time I'm actually getting to revive my voice and to talk back to my eating disorder, in a way."  — Joanna Kay In the months since we first aired this show, we've heard from many of you that it changed the way you think about your life and the Internet. If you need help in real life, there are people out there. Here are some resources we've collected (and let us know if you have more suggestions): National Eating Disorder Association. Pro Ana. My friend Mia. Thinspiration. If you know these terms, you are familiar with one of the dark corners of the internet where vulnerable people go to find support in making bad life decisions.  These are pro-eating disorder communities that teach women how to be better at starving themselves. A language emerged to bypass bans and filters, replacing trigger words like anorexia and bulimia, with friendly phrases like: “my friends Ana and Mia.” Bone thin bodies, grim weight statistics, and frightening calorie counts are posted as goals and achievements, hashtagged #thinspiration. "When you are starving you don't feel emotion. So I hadn't felt a lot in a while." These communities have existed as long as the internet, but 25 years after the start of the web, digital life has its tentacles around us in a different way. The threat has matured. Now, if you are trying to recover from an eating disorder, temptation is just a Tweet or Instagram away. And when a single picture of bony arm or a post about a celebrity who only weighs 100 pounds can mess with your recovery, it's not just the internet that's a dangerous place. It's your whole world. This week on the podcast, the story of how a lonely young girl used the internet to get better at starving herself for over a decade without even her family finding out. And then, the online moment that changed her course to recovery. In this episode:  Joanna Kay opens up about growing up with anorexia alongside an ever evolving online threat. Sharon Hodgson remembers the dark days of running a Pro-Ana site for anorexics. danah boyd tells us why banning these sites -- as Italy has tried to do -- is a fools errand. Ideas for what could help girls like Joanna. Resources and where to get help:  Joanna Kay's wonderfully brave personal recovery blog: Middle Ground Musings. National Eating Disorder Association.
