In today's episode of The Hero of the Hour Podcast, Mark chats with Scott Dolson, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Indiana University. Following his graduation from university, Scott worked for Tim Knight Enterprises before returning to Indiana University in December 1989. While serving as director of IU's Varsity Club in 2008, he was tapped to replace Fred Glass as IU's deputy director and chief operating officer of intercollegiate athletics. In March 2020, he was appointed President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at IU.Under Scott's leadership, IU has been at the forefront of supporting its female student-athletes and women's intercollegiate athletics. Shortly after he assumed the leadership of IU Athletics, he announced the creation of the Women's Excellence Initiative, a fundraising effort designed to enhance the intercollegiate athletic opportunities for IU's female student-athletes. In its first year, the Women's Excellence Initiative has already exceeded its original goals and has already been utilized for a number of important projects, including the renovation of the IU Women's Basketball Team Center and a foreign trip for the IU Women's Volleyball program.During the episode, they discuss the five core principles that Scott adheres to: playing by the rules, being well in mind, body and spirit, achieving academically, excelling athletically, and integrating with the university. They talk about why Indiana University is very mission-oriented, and the way in which the school defines success, and what success looks like, and then work hard and smart to make certain that success becomes a reality.Scott also explains how he tries to (with the help of his family) create health, wealth and love in his life, and how much of a struggle balance can be to maintain.Join Mark and Scott for this fascinating discussion!Enjoy! What You'll Learn in this Show:Scott's five core principles, inherited from his predecessor at the university. What it means to be a “hero” at the university. The importance of creating meaningful and effective mental health and anti-hate programs. And so much more...Resources:Indiana University AthleticsNortheast Private Client GroupMark B. The Veterans Health Administration says its best ideas for improvement come from its own employees. VHA has worked with nearly 4,000 employees to spread 344 practices through the agency's Diffusion of Excellence Initiative. VA says putting those ideas into practice saved the agency nearly $23 million. This year, 85 VHA employees have presented their ideas to agency leadership. Ryan Vega is the director of VHA's Diffusion of Excellence Initiative. He told Federal News Radio's Nicole Ogrysko how the VHA's Innovators Network and Diffusion programs have grown since their beginning a few years ago. The fifth episode of the VHA Innovation Ecosystem podcast, VHA:IE, focuses on how VA is helping Veterans reflect on and share their stories with their health providers, loved ones, and the community at large. On this episode, you will hear from the team behind a program that personalizes the healthcare experience by including a Veteran’s life story in their medical file, along with a project that aims to address how Veterans may confront death. You’ll also hear from a non-profit dance group that is helping restore Veterans' physical, mental, and emotional strength through workshops and public performances. The first program, My Life, My Story, is building a network of employees and volunteers who sit down with Veterans and then craft written life stories for inclusion in Veterans’ medical records. This allows Veterans to feel seen and heard and enables doctors to better understand the lives of those they care for. The program originated at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin, and is being spread across VA as it gains popularity with both Veterans and caregivers. Dr. Ryan Vega, Director of the Diffusion of Excellence Initiative, speaks with Thor Ringler about My Life, My Story, including the challenges with sustaining the program and his future vision for it. Before I Die, the second program featured in the episode, is a worldwide community art project that is being implemented at the Tomah VA Medical Center. The facility will erect an eco-friendly recycled paper wall that will allow patients and visitors to write their answer to the question, “Before I die, I want to…” The project is meant to help patients and their loved ones begin an important discussion about death. John D’Adamo, Acting Director of the VHA Innovators Network, talks with Amanda Meinke about the wall’s ability to connect Veterans with their community and loved ones. The final segment features an interview with Jacques Heim and Chris Loverro from the non-profit dance troupe DIAVOLO. Through the Veterans Project: A Long Journey Home, DIAVOLO helps Veterans reconnect with their bodies and mental and emotional strengths. John D’Adamo sits down to discuss the program with Heim, who is DIAVOLO’s founder and artistic director, and Loverro, who is a performer and Army Veteran. We don't actually have a set of questions that we ask. We have topics that we cover." -- Thor Ringler, William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital "Some people look at death as a negative, and this way, people can write down their hopes and dreams and aspirations and build our relationship with death and one another by sharing these things." -- Amanda Meinke, Tomah VA Medical Center "I really believe the more we can bring closer the Veterans and the civilians together, for the civilians to really understand who are the Veterans, what they are about, who are they – the better we can help the Veterans." -- Jacques Hines, DIAVOLO founder and artistic director "Don't be intimidated by the dance component. It's not about learning to be a dancer, it's about coming together in a tribe and learning how to move and create." -- Chris Loverro, Army Veteran and DIAVOLO performer

The role nano structures play in information technology and in life sciences is growing continuously. While many individual building blocks in the nanometer sector have been developed in the past few years, relatively little is known to date about how these components are integrated in complex systems. It is therefore one of the principal objectives of the Nanosystems Initiative (NIM) to create a broad range of artificial and multifunctional nanosystems, to understand the way they function and ultimately to control them. This is the only way to ensure their use in information technology and in life sciences. In a total of 10 sub-areas the focus ranges, for example, from quantum phenomena in nanosystems to "lab-on-a-chip" applications. NIM brings together scientists of international repute from various research facilities in Munich and different disciplines such as physics, biophysics, physical chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutics, biology, electrical engineering and medicine to form one unique research association. NIM has been established within the scope of the Excellence Initiative, a Germany-wide competition to promote top-level university research.

At the Center for Integrated Protein Science Munich (CIPSM), leading Munich-based scientists are developing a new kind of protein research. The focus of interest is on the role of proteins, which as central biological macro-molecules condition, among other things, the structure and function of all organisms. This necessitates research at different levels of complexity – from isolated proteins to proteins in the living organism. One emphasis at CIPSM is on research into protein dynamics. Modern techniques assist in observing proteins in living cells and in various types of tissue as well as in animals. Different related areas focus on the biophysical analysis of proteins, protein folding, the structure of protein complexes, the interaction of proteins with nucleic acids, the manipulation of protein functions and neurodegenerative illnesses. CIPSM has been established within the scope of the Excellence Initiative, a Germany-wide competition to promote top-level university research.
