50 years ago yesterday, Ray Parker Jr. and I were in the same room… well, it was Madison Square Garden, he was 18, playing with Little Stevie Wonder, who was opening for The Stones, and, it was Mick's birthday. That's some cool shared history… I, a mere speck in the story am claiming my seat. Today was not quite so historic, yet any time in Ray's company is a huge treat. Add IIFC Award-Winning Filmmaker, Fran Strine to the mix, whose documentary, Who You Gonna Call, about Ray, just dropped, and well, it gets even more special. We talked about how they met on Fran's previous doc, Hired Gun, which also featured Ray, and where the idea for WYGC was borne. Ray's story was just too big to not tell. Known internationally, cross-generation for Ghostbusters, there's so much more to the story. Growing up in Detroit, police brutality firsthand, playing the clarinet and the sax, how he got his first guitar, and his 10,000 hours before he hit 13 when he had his first big gig with The Spinners. Crazy. Barry White, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Gladys Knight, and Bill Withers, followed, while he was still a kid. How Stevie changed his life, how his mother motivated him, moving to LA, doing his own thing, getting no credit for his Grammy-winning #1 You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, Raydio, his hit, Jack and Jill, to Ghostbusters––a last minute do or don't get paid stroke of genius. This story is at the heart of Who You Gonna Call, but like Grammy-Winning Hollywood Walk of Famer Ray, there's so much more to the story. I loved the doc and this time with these two exceedingly talented and charming men. You can catch the film on Prime and Peacock https://www.amazon.com/Who-You-Gonna-Call-Ultra/dp/B0B2Q4FCX7 Run! Music documentarian Fran Strine joins Staci and cohost Darren Gordon Smith. Fran is the director of Hired Gun, a fascinating film about the sidemen and session musicians of rock, In it, Fran tells stories about Billy Joel's band, Whitesnake, P!NK, Metallica… and many more. His current documentary is about Ray Parker, Jr., and it's called, appropriately enough, Who You Gonna Call? The veteran filmmaker shares insight into his interview and editing processes, how he got the dream job of working with the one and only Dolly Parton, and why Ray Parker, Jr., is so much more than just “the Ghostbusters guy.” Also, Darren and Staci discuss the original rock music songs in their new film The Second Age of Aquarius, their interest in the 27 Club, and what it must have been like for a rock star to have control of their “image” in the pre-social media days. Steve Cooper talks with director Fran Strine. Fran is an Award-winning documentary filmmaker. He has toured the world several times over with radio titans NickelBack, Staind, Seether, Dolly Parton and dozens of other artists and made the self-titled documentary for rock band Staind and the Gold Certified live DVD’s with the Iconic Dolly Parton, Dolly, Live in London. He is best known for the in-depth feature documentary Hired Gun, about the hardworking session and touring musicians who are rarely acknowledged for their contribution to popular artist’s work. Completed in early 2016, it’s world premiere was at SXSW, the UK premier was at the Glastonbury Festival and it has screened in over 320 theaters and is now on Netflix where it spent 3 weeks in the “actively trending” category. His new project is a documentary about Ray Parker Jr. titled Who You Gonna Call.
“Lib, you had your turn, now it’s the young guys turns.” Hired Gun. Dir. Fran Strine. Liberty Devitto. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 2017. Film. In the eighth episode, we talk about the idea that older bands should move out of the way of newer bands in many facets of music. There is no Spotify list this week because it is more of a philosophical talk. There were many bands listed, but very few songs. You can share your ideas or just engage with us about your feelings on music at musicmusingfeedback@gmail.com Enjoy! If you want to hear a great podcast on movies, check out my friend Jonathan Berkenfield‘s movie review site, Berk Reviews, as mentioned in this episode.
Everybody remembers Ray Parker Jr. taking over the world in 1984 with the Ghostbusters theme. But, there is so much more to his story. He was one of the most sought after session guitarists of the 70s playing with everyone from Stevie Wonder to Marvin Gaye to Seals and Crofts. He also wrote hit songs for artists like Leo Sayer and Rufus with Chaka Khan, not to mention racking up a bunch of his own hits like "The Other Woman" and "A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do)" as both a solo artist and as the frontman for his funk band Raydio. As he says in this conversation, "Ghostbusters" was just "gravy on the steak". Here we talk about his whole career, but the big news is that Fran Strine, director of the acclaimed Hired Gun documentary, has begun work on a Ray doc called Who You Gonna Call, which launched an Indiegogo campaign last week. Here is the link to donate. Enjoy! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/who-you-gonna-call-music/x/2404155#/
Who ya gonna call on for a day of legends on BEHIND THE LENS? How about DICK CAVETT, RAY PARKER JR, and FRAN STRINE for starters! Truly a legendary BEHIND THE LENS, RAY PARKER JR and director FRAN STRINE are first up as they talk about their latest venture – WHO YA GONNA CALL – a documentary on the life of Ray Parker Jr. Starting up a friendship during the making of Fran's acclaimed documentary "Hired Gun", it was all of Ray's anecdotes and history that made Fran realize then that Ray Parker Jr needed a full feature in order to document and share his story with the world. Always a joy to have Fran Strine on BTLRadioShow, he's back and this time has Ray with him as they announce and talk about the launch of their crowdfunding campaign on INDIEGOGO for WHO YA GONNA CALL – which starts at midnight on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. One listen to these two and you'll be in stitches and not only want to see this documentary made, but jump on INDIEGOGO and donate to the seed money campaign. Filmmakers will appreciate Fran's love for Kodak who are helping out so the documentary can be shot on film while Ray is a pure delight talking about teaching Stevie Wonder to drive, sleeping with the light on, and his fear of (*GASP*) ghosties and things that go bump in the night! And although we could talk with Fran and Ray all day, we bid them adieu to make room for legendary interviewer and talk show host, DICK CAVETT. With a career spanning five decades, the 11 time Emmy nominee and three-time winner, is on hand to talk about his new documentary – ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES – which has a debut screening on March 11th at SXSW. Talking about a friendship that developed over the years and spanned decades, Dick gives us just a hint of the casual ease that not only made him a renowned interviewer, but how he became friends with Muhammad Ali, and what you can expect to learn in the documentary. While the documentary itself is a "must see", listening to Dick Cavett on BTLRadio Show is a "must listen." Anecdotes abound, as does some serious discussion about Ali's place and influence in the world, and Dick's heartfelt words on the loss of Ali. And classic films will thoroughly enjoy hearing Dick Cavett talk about (and imitate) Katharine Hepburn as we delve into some sidebars beyond the documentary. But before hearing from our very special guests, how about some clips of what Spirit Award winners Jordan Peele, Allison Janney and Agnes Varda had to say in the press tent following their Spirit Award wins on Saturday! http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Episode 122 "The Gentlemen's Dojo" welcomes the director of the Netflix documentary "Hired Gun", Fran Shrine. The boys discuss Fran's desire to go from photographer to director and all that it took to make an incredible film on the insight of the heroes behind our favorite songs.
Join us for a conversation with Fran Strine. A veteran concert photographer turned film maker that directed the award winning documentary "Hired Gun". http://www.hiredgunthefilm.com/
Hired Gun is one of the best rock docs of the last couple years. It details the realities of life as a struggling musician whose career is dependent on being employed by big artists. Imagine you go from nothing to being someone like Billy Joel's drummer. You now fly first class, stay in fancy hotels, and play in front of hundreds of thousands of people. Then, Billy decides to go a different direction and you're not only out of a job, but unlikely to ever find a gig as good as the one you just had. It's not an easy way to live, supporting the artists that get all the perks. In this conversation with the film's director Fran Strine, we talk about how he stumbled on this topic, how he got so much great access, and elaborates on some of the film's highlights. AND, stay tuned to the end so you can learn how to win your own copy of Hired Gun on Blu-Ray. Enjoy! http://www.hiredgunthefilm.com/

These “hired guns” have mastered their craft and performed on the greatest stages and in high-intensity recording sessions, yet rarely receive credit for their work. In the vein of the 2014 Academy Award©-winning doc “20 Feet from Stardom,” “Hired Gun” details the highs and lows of touring life, the demands of session schedules, and the dedication required to play backseat to some of rock’s most iconic musicians.http://www.hiredgunthefilm.com/

From session musicians on albums to the guys who step up on stage to complete the sound of a band, we meet some of the most famous "hired guns" in the music industry, including PHIL X, guitarist for Bon Jovi.
