Liberty DeVitto has long been recognised as one of the most influential drummers in rock history, renowned for his explosive energy, innovative rhythms, and deep connection to the music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was captivated by drumming at an early age, inspired by legends like Ringo Starr, Dino Danelli, and Keith Moon. Raised in a vibrant, music-loving family, DeVitto honed his craft by playing along to records and developing his signature style—a mix of finesse, power, and an uncanny ability to elevate a song's emotional impact. DeVitto's career reached new heights when he joined Billy Joel's band in 1974, a partnership that spanned over three decades. As Joel's drummer, DeVitto was the driving force behind countless hits, including "Piano Man," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," and "My Life." His intuitive understanding of Joel's songwriting allowed him to craft drum parts that became as iconic as the melodies themselves. Albums like The Stranger, 52nd Street, and Glass Houses showcased his ability to balance technical brilliance with raw emotion, solidifying his place in music history. Beyond Billy Joel, DeVitto has collaborated with a wide range of iconic artists, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Carly Simon, and Karen Carpenter, displaying his versatility and adaptability across genres. He has also performed on numerous studio sessions, further contributing to his impressive discography. In addition to his illustrious career as a sideman, DeVitto formed The Slim Kings, a band that combines classic rock influences with a fresh, modern sound. The Slim Kings have released several critically acclaimed tracks, earning a loyal following for their authentic and energetic performances. He also has The Lords of 52nd St which is the original band behind Billy Joel - a band that has sold more than 150 million records and helped establish Billy Joel's formidable sound. In recent years, DeVitto has shared his incredible journey through his memoir, Liberty: Life, Billy, and the Pursuit of Happiness. The book provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at his life on and off the stage, detailing his childhood in Brooklyn, his experiences with Billy Joel, and his personal struggles and triumphs. It's a testament to his resilience and passion for music. DeVitto continues to be an active presence in the music industry, performing live, recording new music, and mentoring aspiring musicians. His latest project is recording with Studio D'Lux - a supergroup led by keyboardist-vocalist Doug Kistner (Trans-Siberian Orchestra/Blood Sweat & Tears/John Waite). Liberty Devitto is joined by guitarist Jon Herington (Steely Dan), New Brunswick singer Glen Burtnik (Styx), Asbury Park singer Reagan Richards (Williams Honor), bassist Malcolm Gold (Sheryl Crow) and saxophonist Tom Timko (Gloria Estefan).   Liberty remains a vocal advocate for drummers, regularly appearing at drum clinics and industry events to inspire the next generation of percussionists. With a career that spans decades and a legacy that continues to grow, Liberty DeVitto is more than a drummer—he is a cornerstone of modern music, whose beats will echo for generations to come. Liberty joins us this week to share what continues to be an amazing ride through the music industry. A ride he has dedicated his entire life to.

From “Chicago Med” to a cozy Michigan farm…Today, we talk love, compassion, and self-care with actress, musician, and philanthropist, Torrey DeVitto. You may know Torrey from her six-years on the TV Show "Chicago Med" playing Natalie Manning, or from her many other film and TV credits, but she also spends a tremendous amount of time advocating for causes that encourage more compassion and conscious living. Torrey is a self-proclaimed, “Jill of all Trades.” Her father, Liberty DeVitto, is the longtime drummer for Billy Joel so it's no surprise that music was her first passion - excelling in violin at age 6. In addition to being a touring musician and actress, Torrey is also a dancer and model, where she works to promote eco-friendly fashion and makeup. These days, though, you're more than likely to find her on her farm in Michigan hanging with her new fiancé and having the occasional sloth day, which we definitely all need from time to time.Follow her on Instagram at @torreydevittoEpisode WebpageWatch the Episode on YouTubeUpcoming Events:Black Mountain Retreat - April 14th-19th, 2024 - Save $200 with code: RIP200https://plantstrongfoods.com/pages/2024-black-mountain-retreat Sedona Retreat - October 8th-13th, 2024 - Save $200 with code: RIP200https://plantstrongfoods.com/pages/2024-sedona-retreat Follow PLANTSTRONG and Rip Esselstynhttps://plantstrongfoods.com/ https://www.facebook.com/GoPlantstrong https://www.instagram.com/goplantstrong/https://www.instagram.com/ripesselstyn/ Leave Us a Voicemail Question or StoryLeave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/plantstrong Let Us Help Your PLANTSTRONG Journeyhttps://home.mealplanner.plantstrong.com/ https://myplantstrong.com/b/trailblazer Follow the PLANTSTRONG Podcast and Give the Show a 5-star RatingApple PodcastsSpotifyTheme Music for Episodehttps://app.soundstripe.com/songs/10845

If you had to explain why Liberty DeVitto is a great drummer to someone who'd never heard a BIlly Joel record, how would you do it? That's the question we're exploring in our 100th episode.    It's a somewhat tricky proposition. Liberty's a well-regarded drummer who's played on dozens of Top 20 records and toured with some of the biggest acts in the world. But he's not a flashy player, nor is he the most prolific. You can't point to big showcase songs or a massive discography to illustrate the point.    However, a few close listens to the right songs, the right beats, and the right fills on the right records reveal why he's such a celebrated musician. And, with us both being lifelong fans and drummers with decades of experience, we're especially attuned to those moments.    For this episode, we both listed the ten Liberty DeVitto moments that we think are especially accomplished or particularly showcase his talents. Then, we explored the nuances that make them great. Along the way, we touched on the motifs, styles, and approach to the craft that make him stand out.    Join us as we dig deep into the drumming of Liberty DeVitto.   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor   Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

With a new album out and a New York-based band in place, Billy Joel was starting to heat up in 1976. His show at the Bottom Line in Manhattan on June 10th of that year is the proof.   The album, Turnstiles, had just come out a few weeks prior. And the orchestra, as Billy was now calling the band, had been on the road for just over two months.    The performance was simulcast on seven radio stations, leaving listeners today with a crystal-clear document of the night. Billy and the band, now featuring Russell Javors and Howie Emerson on guitar, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Richie Cannata on saxophone and organ, and Liberty DeVitto on drums, was a tight, well-oiled unit.    The night featured a handful of songs from the then-new record as well as concert staples from Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. Sonically, the band straddled the New York grit of Turnstiles with the west coast feel of the previous two records.    These performances laid the groundwork for The Stranger in 1977, but a listen to this night reveals an energetic, fully-realized sound from a band hungry for success.    Join us as we dig deep into Live at The Bottom Line 1976.    Live remastered audio courtesy of Jamie Tate.   ------   Email us: glasshousespodcast@gmail.com   Glass Houses - A Billy Joel Podcast on the web / social media: Website: http://www.glasshousespod.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glasshousespodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glasshousespod/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/glasshousespod  Discord: https://discord.gg/6G6cMRFu7T   Support the podcast: Paypal: https://paypal.me/glasshousespod Venmo: @MGrosvenor   Produced by Michael Grosvenor & Jack Firneno for Groove Music Marketing

‘In the beginning,' Billy Joel entertained Long Island locals, with The Hassles and Attila, prior to forging a solo career in 1971. One year later, the singer-songwriter-pianist captivated college students when “Captain Jack” dominated the Philadelphia airwaves. ‘And so, it goes…' ‘Cold Spring Harbor' was rife with barrelhouse piano and tear-stained balladry but with ‘Turnstiles' Joel realized his dream of forming a stellar band. The success of ‘The Stranger' led to sold-out arenas and ‘52nd Street' honored the heyday of American jazz, while ‘The Nylon Curtain' highlighted socio-economic inequities and wartime brotherhood. 1993's ‘River of Dreams' fused reggae and world music. Then, in the early 2000's, his celebration of classical works ushered in a sea change. Unquestionably, Billy's catalogue has thrived, despite constantly changing trends in the music industry. Over a fifty-plus year span, many of his relatable songs have become standards, covered by countless artists. The third best-selling solo artist in the U.S. has continued to attract multi-generational audiences across the planet, so if you're ‘all in the mood for a melody,' read on. As part of Sonicbond's On Track series, “Billy Joel Every Album, Every Song” contains behind-the-scenes stories and an analysis of Joel's extensive studio recordings, many of which became top 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The book also features a foreward by legendary Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto.Rock journalist Lisa Torem has written features, profiles and reviews for American and British outlets for over a decade, and has interviewed Ian Anderson, Colin Blunstone, Eric Burdon, Dave Brubeck, Dave Davies, Janis Ian, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Sarah McLachlan, Robin Trower, Suzanne Vega, Dweezil Zappa among others. Liberty DeVitto Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson I can't stop smiling. How I adore Liberty DeVitto, and would even if he wasn't one of the greatest drummers of all time––Billy Joel's, iconic partner in music for 30 years. I've known Lib for 30-something years and every time I see him it's better than the last. Like fine wine, except neither of us is having any––unlike how it was when we met. We talk about that - his climb to stadium rock, the magnums of red, throwing up on his shoes––before Billy, Mitch Ryder, Vanilla Fudge, meeting Billy, Stevie Nicks, Only the Good Die Young, what Lib brought to it, love and their marriages, and marriages, and marriages, Richie Cannata, Russell Javors, Doug Stegmeyer, The Billy Joel Band, how Billy gave up an enormous opportunity out of love, loyalty and respect for them, and how it fell apart after 30 years of stellar music, fame & friendship. Sobriety, perhaps contributing to Lib's demise. We talked about the silence between them in the years that followed, Lib's resurrection, NYC Hit Squad with Ricky Byrd, The Lords of 52nd Street with the original BJ band, his bestselling memoir, https://amzn.to/2CP8qrg, an upcoming book about Santa https://amzn.to/3dS13li, and, his girls, girls, girls. Wife, daughters, and a new baby granddaughter, that is. The reconciliation with Billy, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Foundation Band— playing and getting inducted into the Long Island off-shoot, and being featured in the rock doc, Hired Gun. Life is grand, better than ever. Lib is happy and grateful. And so much damn fun! Couldn't adore him more. Sitting down with Lib is like going home and being with family. The one you dig. Today on Billy Joel A to Z we head back to the best album of 1979 in 52nd Street and the song Stiletto. In this uptempo track from Billy's sixth studio album, Billy Joel sings about an irresistible but dangerous woman who wields emotional manipulation like a sharp blade. It comes complete with a funky bass line, finger snaps, and cliffhanger breaks. And it's the only song where Liberty DeVitto plays the umbrella. Oh, I'm not kidding.

The Whole Artist with Courtney Rioux: Conversations with artists about acting, purpose, and the journey to finding wholeness. You are so much more than the last job you booked. This week Courtney sits down with Torrey Devitto. Torrey is an actor who is known for the NBC drama Chicago Med (2015-2021), Amy Makes Three (2016) , and the CW television series The Vampire Diaries (2009), among many others. Born and raised in Huntington, New York, to Mary Devitto & Liberty DeVitto, from the time Torrey was born, she was surrounded by the entertainment industry. For 28 years, her father played the drums for Billy Joel. She spent most of her early years traveling on the road with her parents. She began violin lessons at age six and was in the 4th grade when she had already earned her place as the 4th chair violinist in a New York high school orchestra. She played in the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Florida Youth Artist Orchestra. In 1997, Torrey played on stage with her father at a Terri Binion show in Orlando, earning her first standing ovation. At 15, she started working in commercials, modeling, and print ads. Her break came when she earned the lead in playwright Lee Blessing's three-woman play Eleemosynary, which was performed at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Torrey moved to Los Angeles, where her career as an actress took off. Outside work, Torrey has worked with SafeBAE and been a longtime Hospice Ambassador, and also supports PETA and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). She shares, "To most, death is an incredibly scary and taboo idea. Hospice provides a shoulder to lean on... and the important duty of easing the fears and doubts that naturally reside in our minds as we approach the end of our lifetime. There is nothing I am more proud or passionate about than being a part of this work. It is a life-long commitment for me.
