Widely known as the drummer for the Billy Joel band from 1976 through 1993, Liberty has also played with many of the most influential musicians in the world, including Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Stevie Nicks, Rick Wakeman, and Meat Loaf. He's most recently been active with two different bands - The Lords Of 52nd Street, featuring other members of the classic era Billy Joel band Richie Cannata and Russell Jacobs, and the Slim Kings featuring bassist Andy Attanasio and vocalist/guitarist Michael Sackler-Berner. Liberty DeVitto has long been recognised as one of the most influential drummers in rock history, renowned for his explosive energy, innovative rhythms, and deep connection to the music. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was captivated by drumming at an early age, inspired by legends like Ringo Starr, Dino Danelli, and Keith Moon. Joe Bergamini maintains a diverse career as a drumming performer and educator. Enjoying various styles of playing, he is known for his progressive rock drumming in the bands Happy the Man and 4Front, and he is the current international touring drummer for The Doo-Wop Project. Based in the New York area, Joe has worked extensively on Broadway. In 2018, he held the drum chair for the Broadway production of Gettin' the Band Back Together, and he has also performed at over 15 other shows including Movin' Out, Jersey Boys, Rock of Ages, In the Heights, Beautiful (The Carole King Musical), Hamilton, The Lion King, Million Dollar Quartet, and others. Joe has also appeared on the first national tours of Movin' Out, Jersey Boys and Beautiful, and with major symphony orchestras including the Philly Pops and the Detroit, Nashville, Seattle, San Diego, Indianapolis and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras. A best-selling drum set author, Joe has won four Modern Drummer Readers Poll awards for his drum books, including best drum book of 2013 for Neil Peart: Taking Center Stage. In 2023 he wrote GADD: A Life in Time, the authorized musical biography of Steve Gadd, under Gadd's supervision and with his extensive involvement. Liberty DeVitto was Billy Joel's drummer for over 20 years. Liberty provided the backbeat that a generation grew up listening to both in the studio and live. We've asked Alex Cohen, Ramon Montager, and Jared Falk to record their version of Billy Joel's "Allentown", a song that has that classic feel, so we could see Liberty react in real time to these different versions of his parts in this episode of The Drum Department - who played it best?

With a new album out and a New York-based band in place, Billy Joel was starting to heat up in 1976. His show at the Bottom Line in Manhattan on June 10th of that year is the proof.   The album, Turnstiles, had just come out a few weeks prior. And the orchestra, as Billy was now calling the band, had been on the road for just over two months.    The performance was simulcast on seven radio stations, leaving listeners today with a crystal-clear document of the night. Billy and the band, now featuring Russell Javors and Howie Emerson on guitar, Doug Stegmeyer on bass, Richie Cannata on saxophone and organ, and Liberty DeVitto on drums, was a tight, well-oiled unit.    The night featured a handful of songs from the then-new record as well as concert staples from Piano Man and Streetlife Serenade. Legendary Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto is this episode's guest. In 2020 he wrote his memoir titled Liberty: Life, Billy and the Pursuit of Happiness. We get into Liberty's 30 year career with Billy Joel and the stories behind the endless stream of hits from Billy.Liberty's grooves are heard on 13 platinum Billy Joel albums that have sold over 150 million copies. He wrote and performed the drum parts on 22 of Billy's 23 top-40 hits and all six Grammy-award winning recordings. In 2006, after 30 years as Billy's drummer, he was let go from the band's tour, ending the longest running tenure in Billy's band beginning with the 1976 album Turnstiles. There was an eventual lawsuit over royalty payments. They eventually settled out of court and have since reconciled and reclaimed their friendship. Billy would write the forward to Liberty's book. In this uptempo track from Billy's sixth studio album, Billy Joel sings about an irresistible but dangerous woman who wields emotional manipulation like a sharp blade. It comes complete with a funky bass line, finger snaps, and cliffhanger breaks. And it's the only song where Liberty DeVitto plays the umbrella. Oh, I'm not kidding.

For 28 years, her father played the drums for Billy Joel. She spent most of her early years traveling on the road with her parents. She began violin lessons at age six and was in the 4th grade when she had already earned her place as the 4th chair violinist in a New York high school orchestra. She played in the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Florida Youth Artist Orchestra. In 1997, Torrey played on stage with her father at a Terri Binion show in Orlando, earning her first standing ovation. At 15, she started working in commercials, modeling, and print ads. Her break came when she earned the lead in playwright Lee Blessing's three-woman play Eleemosynary, which was performed at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Torrey moved to Los Angeles, where her career as an actress took off. Outside work, Torrey has worked with SafeBAE and been a longtime Hospice Ambassador, and also supports PETA and The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). She shares, "To most, death is an incredibly scary and taboo idea. Hospice provides a shoulder to lean on... and the important duty of easing the fears and doubts that naturally reside in our minds as we approach the end of our lifetime.
