Send in your music story!A band can lose two core members and still keep moving, but the reason matters. Godsmack's touring fatigue headline opens the door to a bigger conversation about burnout in hard rock and metal, what the road actually demands, and why “push through it” culture breaks people. We take that news and connect it to the real economics of music today: streaming pressure, constant content, and the hidden costs artists absorb just to stay visible. Sean Martin from The Quarantined joins us and goes deep on the independent artist playbook. We talk Spotify strategy and why monthly listeners are leverage, not just pennies. We get into merch, influencer marketing, playlisting, and why the most important member of your “band” might be your lawyer. Then we zoom out to the vinyl resurgence and why labels are leaning back into full album releases as vinyl records become a premium, profitable product again. If you're building an audience, planning a release, or trying to understand music industry trends, this one is packed with usable insight. The heaviest part of the conversation is also the most important. Sean shares what PTSD really is: a permanent change to the nervous system, not a punchline and not just fear. He explains what helped him climb out, why therapy and expert support matter, and how metacognition can turn survival into progress. We wrap with our song of the week “Molly” by Sponge, then blow off steam with a three-second “guess the song” game that turns into laughs, nostalgia, and a little friendly chaos. If this hit home, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. From the legends like Billy Idol and The Cult to creating music with the Godfather of Heavy Metal himself, Ozzy Osbourne, this is the career of Billy Morrison. A couple of years ago Billy put out The Morrison Project featuring the song "Crack Cocaine." The song had Ozzy on vocals and it quickly shot to number one. Then, as part of a expanded edition Billy put out another song with Ozzy called "Gods Of Rock N' Roll" and it sounded like a song that would be a swan song, unforuntly it was. Now, Billy is back with a new song called "Becoming" with Sully Erna from Godsmack singing and Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme on guitar. It's part of a new solo project called Hallow due out later this year.

Send in your music story!Concert tickets are climbing, fan wars are louder than ever, and somehow we're still arguing about whether the biggest artists on the planet are actually that good. We start with real-life catch-up and a little music nostalgia, including Harley picking up the guitar again and falling back into a Godsmack-heavy rotation. From there, the chaos kicks in: the clip that gets our biggest comment surge, the weird stuff people choose to be mad about, and why internet feedback can steer a whole show. Then we get into the main event: music hot takes. We throw out the kind of opinions that can get you side-eyed at a party, from calling Taylor Swift overrated to saying The Beatles don't belong anywhere near the top of the list. We talk pop trends, artist drama, and how your opinion can shift when you actually live with the songs instead of just hearing the discourse. We also go after genre patterns, including a blunt breakdown of country music themes and why “going country” has become the ultimate career pivot for artists from rap, pop, and rock.We close with the most relatable topic of all: live shows. We debate concert drinking, pit etiquette, crowd surfing “shortcuts,” and the small selfish moves that can ruin a night for everyone else. And of course, we unload on Ticketmaster, Live Nation, and why ticket pricing feels broken right now. “He's looking at me…”   Released on August 22, 1989, CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, the major label debut album from Martinsburg, West Virginia thrash metal savants WRATHCHILD AMERICA, is undoubtedly one of the most uniquely profound thrash metal albums in all of heavy metal history to be crafted by one of the most extraordinarily talented (and criminally underrated) bands in the entire genre.    And to think, for many metalheads back in the day, their very first experience with this album was in a LIVE concert setting, opening for Testament. Just imagine how blessed one would be to see a band as unbelievable as WRATHCHILD AMERICA (for the very first time) opening for an established act like Testament and being completely blown away after just one show, having NEVER heard the album before getting to see them LIVE!    “He's making eye contact…”   With a stylistic palette that blends thrash, heavy metal, and 70's classic rock, there is absolutely NO ONE else in metal who sounds ANYTHING like them. And if you're jonesing to purchase a copy of CLIMBIN' THE WALLS, not to worry, because it was recently re-released (along with their second and final album, 3-D) as part of a two-CD package with a couple of bonus tracks.    “Is he still lookin' at you?”   Get ready for a trip back through time to the days of yore, when thrash was still riding high and the opening band for Testament absolutely blew the minds of everyone in attendance when you JOIN US for one of the greatest and most underrated metal albums of all time with WRATHCHILD AMERICA: CLIMBIN' THE WALLS.   (Also, just in case you might be wondering, there's an early (we're talking “6 years ago, during the Hodges Era” early: 02/20/2020) episode appropriately dubbed WRATHSAZ, which is a combo episode featuring both WRATHCHILD AMERICA and the darker, groovier, heavier incarnation that followed, Souls At Zero.)   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode Help Support Metal Nerdery https://www.patreon.com/metalnerderypodcast Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on your favorite Podcast app Follow us on the Socials: Facebook - Instagram - TikTok Email: metalnerdery@gmail.com Can't be LOUD Enough Playlist on Spotify Metal Nerdery Munchies on YouTube @metalnerderypodcast Show Notes: (00:01): “See? “If I hadn't have known that was Anthrax, I would have guessed it was Alice In Chains…”   The early 90's was a strange time for metal, most notably due to the change in the musical landscape with the emergence of the Seattle scene and Alice In Chains becoming one of the key crossover bands to bridge the transition from thrash to the next wave of darker, grungier sounding heavy metal.    “Every time you do that, I have a less chance of getting laid…”   While ANTHRAX began the 90's with a much darker and angrier sound on Persistence of Time, the darkness and heaviness of their sound would become further amplified with the departure of Joey Belladonna and the addition of JOHN BUSH (formerly of Armored Saint) on vocals, resulting in a new era of Anthrax: BUSHTHRAX!    With more grit and heft in the vocals than before, the JOHN BUSH ERA of ANTHRAX is definitely a different flavor than the band's output throughout the 80's with Joey Belladonna, and with the changing of the guard in the early 90's due to the growing popularity of the Seattle sound, the time was right for a slight alteration to the thrashier sounds of 80's era ThrashThrax, resulting in the darker, more aggressive BUSHTHRAX era that would follow for the next decade or so.   “Alright, well it's not like we've never done that for you before…”   Always remember that “springtime LSD is the best time for LSD” and that “it's not as fun for me when I push away”. Realize that “girls with Doc Martens are kinda cute (except for when they wear ‘patrouli')” and imagine what it'd be like “if we bled out of our dicks for a week” when you JOIN US for some 90's era ANTHRAX featuring JOHN BUSH, aka BUSHTHRAX!!! We also talk about bands such as Buckcherry who charted late into their careers with "Crazy Bitch", and it how showed the musical diversity of the chart, and the ability of bands from all different musical backgrounds to find a commonplace amongst all the different alternative acts of the era. We also look at how even AC/DC was able to chart late into their careers with "Rock N Roll Train" from their Walmart exclusive "Black Ice" album, and at the end of the cast talk about Worcester's own Godsmack and their chart history, along with playing you their Top 10 charted hit from 2001 "Voodoo".

KKEP331 – BEWARE THE TEMPTATIONOn this episode of The Karen Kenney Show podcast, I talk about a recent trip to a casino (for my sweetie's gig with Sully Erna of Godsmack) that really got me thinking about the world we live in today. Walking into that place was like stepping into a full-on sensory overload - bombarded by flashing lights, nonstop sounds, and a vibe that just pulls you and your brain in from every direction. It was wild to notice how everything is designed to keep you distracted and consuming, and it made me realize how easy it is to get swept up in all that noise. As I moved through the casino, I couldn't help but compare it to the way our phones and social media work. Just like the casino, our electronic devices are built to keep us hooked, and chasing that next little dopamine hit. It's so easy to lose track of time and get pulled away from what really matters, whether it's connecting with people, being present, or just enjoying the world around us. This experience was a wake-up call for me to check in with myself and ask some honest questions:Where am I getting distracted? What am I letting pull my attention away from the things and people that truly matter? I realized that it's not about judging ourselves, but about getting real and making sure we're living on purpose, not just on autopilot. So, if you're feeling a little lost in all the noise out there or like you've been “dopamined into oblivion,” - you're not alone. I hope this episode inspires you to pause, take a fearless look at where your time and energy are really going, and remember what you're here to do. Let's get back to what matters most and leave a little more love behind wherever we go. ❤️ KK'S KEY TAKEAWAYS:• Casinos are designed to create sensory overload and to keep people distracted and consuming – food, booze, gambling, shopping, etc• Modern technology and social media run the same sort of racket and use similar tactics to capture our attention and keep us hooked.• It's wicked easy to lose sight of what really matters - when we're constantly bombarded by all kinds of distractions.• Taking time to reflect on where our attention habitually goes can help us live more intentionally.• Being self-aware allows us to focus on meaningful relationships, intentional activities, and our true purpose.• It's important to pause, ask ourselves honest questions, and make sure we're not living life on autopilot.• Choosing to use our time, gifts, and energy for love and service - can help us make a difference and leave a positive impact! It's undeniable that the merits of diversity lay at the heart of David Bottrill's vast discography. With artists like Peter Gabriel, Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Muse, Silverchair, Staind and Rush, David's work spans genres and generations, lending to a sound that is both familiar and progressive. He's cultivated the aggressive hard-rock palette of bands like Stone Sour, Godsmack, and Mastodon, while maintaining a connection to other ends of the spectrum with artists like Afrocelt Sound System, IAMX, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. With three Grammy Awards and the success of millions of copies sold worldwide, David has produced and mixed platinum and gold career-defining albums that have established paradigms and redefined genres. “I prefer to work on music that has a strong identity and shows elements of originality,” David states, “genre isn't really important.” It's this focus on identity and potential that inspires David to push artists to curate the best of themselves and make music that defines who they are in that moment. And yet, even in their individuality, each album that David works on distinctly shows his fingerprint. David spent 20 years living in the UK and has just built a new Atmos mix and overdub studio in the greater Toronto area in his native country of Canada, although he still spends much of his time working with artists in various international locations. David has recently retired from the board of directors for Make Music Matter, but still supports the non-profit that uses the creation of music and socially conscious art to help heal trauma in marginalized communities and individuals. Through Make Music Matter, David found an outlet for his experience, truly helping better the lives of others and bringing awareness to the community at large.IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:Balancing the artist's vision vs giving people “what they want”Mixing in subgroupsBuilding mix templates to maximize creativity and speedCarving space in the low end to get clarityMixing with a subwooferThe downside of using reverbKnowing when to step away from a mix and restart later To learn more about David, visit: https://www.davidbottrill.com/Looking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint: https://masteryourmix.com/blueprint/ Get your copy of my Amazon #1 bestselling books:The Recording Mindset: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Pro Recordings From Your Home Studio: https://therecordingmindset.com The Mixing Mindset: The Step-By-Step Formula For Creating Professional Rock Mixes From Your Home Studio: https://masteryourmix.com/mixingmindsetbook/ Check out our Sponsors:Download Waves Plugins here: https://waves.alzt.net/EK3G2K Subscribe to the show:Apple Podcasts:
