Her films populate the most notable entries in underground and mainstream 20th century youth culture. Trailblazing filmmaker Penelope Spheeris joins us to share her cheeky Hollywood  outsider perspective which allowed her to break legendary ground, with Suburbia and the Decline of Western Civilization trilogy and make significant dents in mainstream film land with Wayne's World, Black Sheep and Little Rascals.  Brace for Penelope's snidely self-effacing perspective on movies, music, and Hollywood's club and movie cultures.Penelope traces her fascination with punk and street life back to her turbulently nomadic life as a carnival kid. In the late 70s, she and her film crew stage dove deep into L.A.'s punk infused club scene and emerged with Decline of Western Civilization I… A film which was quickly banned by the LAPD before capturing a devoted midnight screening audience and ascending into cult status. Decline I was followed, seven years later by Decline II which captured The Hollywood metal scene and then by Decline III, Penelope's homage to Hollywood's homeless, punk street kids, one of whom became her long-term boyfriend.Between Declines II and III, Penelope directed Wayne's World. She fills us in on capturing Mike Myers and Dana Carvey's big screen vision, how funny they were on the set and whether or not Freddy Mercury saw the famous head banging, Bohemian Rhapsody car scene??? Disappointments cloud anyone's horizon but Penelope has come to terms with losing Wayne's World II and she's still hopeful that her unreleased doc about Ozzfest '99 will receive the necessary music clearances for wide release. The mysterious disappearance of 29-year-old Nancy Ng during a Yoga retreat in Guatemala has left her family, authorities, and the public puzzled. Nancy vanished while on a kayaking trip with nine others, including the yoga instructor organizing the retreat. The group's refusal to cooperate with Guatemalan authorities and their abrupt departure without settling the tab for the missing kayak rental has raised suspicions. The kayak center owners claim the incident was a straightforward drowning, citing the challenging conditions of Lake Atitlán, known for frequent drownings with bodies rarely recovered.Christina Blazek, identified as the last person to see Nancy, has provided her account through her attorney. Blazek insists that she and Ng did not go anywhere together intentionally and that Ng decided to swim despite Blazek's warnings about the rough conditions. Blazek's version suggests Ng accidentally pushed her kayak away while swimming, leading to her disappearance. However, questions linger about the lack of communication among witnesses and the group's delayed report of Ng's disappearance, raising suspicions among Ng's family and search-and-rescue teams.Music:Documentary music   -   in side the House by CO.AG Music"Dark Water" by Infractionhttps://bit.ly/3D1KoG1Music promoted by Inaudio: http://bit.ly/3qxoX6UContact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comYou can also follow us on our social media accounts:✔️ Instagram ➤ https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteries✔️ Twitter ➤ https://twitter.com/wnmysteries✔️ Facebook ➤ https://www.facebook.com/weeknightmysteries/✔️ Website ➤ https://weeknightmysteries.buzzsprout.com

The Truth About Guardianships & A Quirky Christmas Musical

It's a not entirely merry episode of Media Path with some hard but cautionary truths about guardianships AND, a new Christmas musical that celebrates our festive diversity.Greg Thirloway and Maurice Godin are launching a new musical called Oy To The World, that celebrates the Jewish composers who brought us so many carol classics like Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Oh, Holy Night and I'll Be Home For Christmas. Then, we're speaking with investigative journalist, Diane Dimond whose new book about the dangers of guardianship is required reading in a Post-#FreeBritney world.Oy To The World: Christmas With A Twist will premiere, December 14-23, at North Hollywood's El Portal Theatre:  Greg and Maurice give us a sneak peak into their new show which takes place at a Catskills lodge where the new owner decides to put on a Christmas show. In so doing, Christmas carol backstories emerge. Did you know, for example that Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer is inspired by writer Bob May being teased as a child about his “Jewish” nose? So, yes, not just Jesus, but also Rudolph was Jewish!Diane joins us to discuss her new book, We're Here To Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong. She shares her extensive research into the dangerously secretive and insular “legal” practices which lead to citizens losing control of their finances and their freedom. The guardianship or conservatorship systems in the U.S. are state-run,largely unregulated and increasingly populated by financially motivated predators. As we've learned from Britney, anyone who has saved some money or who is earning money is at risk. Diane offers shocking examples of the system's dysfunction and the victims and devastated family members left in its destructive wake. Diane also offers solutions and tips for keeping yourself and your family members safe. As a generation of Boomers continues aging, it is vitally important that we address, amend and federalize guardianship law.Plus, Fritz and Weezy are recommending the new Joan Baez documentary on Prime and Apple TV, I Am Noise and a new crazy cult doc mini-series on Max, Love Has Won: The Cult of Mother God.Path Points of Interest:Diane DimondWe're Here to Help: When Guardianship Goes Wrong by Diane DimondGuardianship Central ResourcesDiane Dimond on FacebookDiane Dimond on TwitterOy! to the World: Christmas With A TwistUse Code: FRITZ for $5 discount on any performance!El Portal on FacebookEl Portal on InstagramMaurice Godin on IMDBGreg Thirloway on IMDBJoan Baez - I Am NoiseLove Has Won: The Cult of Mother God

Jazz/Rock Fusion greats Blood, Sweat & Tears were on top of their game in 1970, winning grammies, headlining Woodstock and racking up hit after hit with Spinning Wheel, And When I Die, and You've Made Me So Very Happy. And then they ventured behind the Iron Curtain. It was not their idea. Nixon was President. The Viet Nam War raged on and BS & T were blackmailed into acting as emissaries on behalf of the U.S. State Department, touring the Soviet Bloc countries of Yugoslavia, Romania and Poland. This precarious adventure and the ensuing stateside fallout are chronicled in the new doc, What The Hell Happened To Blood, Sweat and Tears? Director John Scheinfeld and BS&T Drummer Bobby Colomby join us to discuss this remarkable film, the newly unearthed tour footage, The State Departments' and the Soviet Bloc countries' respective agendas, and how America's response in 1970 reflects a nation as fractured and polarized as the one we see today. Plus, we learn about the jazz and soul origins of BS&T, Bobby's foggy Woodstock memories, John's story-telling principles and how the making of this documentary allowed Bobby, at long last, to recognize his own skill as a drummer! All that and Fritz and Weezy are recommending Sin Eater: The Crimes of Anthony Pellicano on Hulu & HBO's doc series, The Anarchists.Path Points of Interest:What The Hell Happened To Blood Sweat and TearsDirector John Scheinfeld John Scheinfeld on InstagramBobby Colomby Memorandum From the President's Assistant for National Security Affairs (Kissinger) to President NixonL.A.
