I'm so incredibly excited to sit down and talk with my latest Cool Friend, the returning Tom Reimann! Tom and I are super buds and co-hosts on the incredible Tom and Jeff Watch Batman podcast, but he's been gone for a few episodes because HE AND HIS WIFE HAD A BABY! Well my beautiful babies (get it?), he's back, and he's got a brand new show coming your way in the incredible and insane Badical, an oral history of the most intense 90's fighting game that never existed! He also hosts a ton of other shows and writes for Some More News and like, a million other things. We talk about all that, plus I'm pretty sure we mix up Staind and Disturbed a whole bunch. Pretty standard fare, tbh. So enjoy the absolute hell out of this one, and don't forget to follow Tom on the socials (@startthemachine on Twitter @thomasreimann on IG) and, for god's sake, check out Badical AND all the amazing stuff the Gamefully Unemployed network has to offer, and while you're at it, hit up Patreon.com/jeffmay for exclusive content we created JUST FOR PATRONS!

In this episode, the Metalology hosts are joined by Julian Purnell (HeavyMetalJoker) to discuss, run down, and speculate on the once mighty alternative rock/metal band that is Staind. From looking back on the bands catalog and playing selective hits for the “Into The Playlist” segment, to discussing the bands musical pedigree in the overall post 2000's rock world, and the irresponsible conduct by frontman Aaron Lewis, this deep dive is a full on discussion that asks the question…Is Staind a good band and were they ever? Hard rockers Staind will be back at Pine Knob on Wednesday, September 11, for a second show there in just over a year. It will be the heavy rock quartet's seventh show at Pine Knob, and guitarist Mike Mushok tells us why Pine Knob is one of his favorite places to play. Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are continuing their Shaper Dressed Simple Man tour, which the two classic rock acts launched last year and are bringing back to Pine Knob for another stop on Friday, Sept. 13. Judas Priest isn't playing at Pine Knob this time, though -- it's at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheater on Tuesday, Sept. 17 -- but the British heavy metal group has its own history at Pine Knob, including an Ozzfest appearance during 2004. Frontman Rob Halford is another who has nothing but good things to say about Pine Knob.

Aaron Lewis really, really likes fishing. While there's lots of interesting stuff to unpack with Staind's major label debut, from the probably made up story about Fred Durst discovering the band immediately after decrying their apparent Satanism to "Outside" breaking this thing to 2x platinum to the clear blueprint for "Break the Cycle" and what would ultimately become a very successful career, Aaron Lewis mostly really wants you to know that he loves fishing. He doesn't have to fish too hard for compliments from Bryan, who flirts with a Perfecto rating, and John wonders why he never really checked out this album in full despite loving "Mudshovel" at the time. In any case, it's a great album that both hints at Staind's future and makes us wish that they maybe stayed a little bit more in the past. If you want to revisit more of the past with us, head on over to patreon.com/thepodkast to support the show and get a slew of bonus content. For just $4, you'll get THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last month, Sam Burns joined us to revisit a truly B-tier band in Memento, as we reviewed their album "Beginnings". Your donation also gets you access to our entire back catalogue, which is nearly 150 episodes, plus you can donate to have us listen to songs and albums of your choosing. Don't sleep!
Tim Montana is a maverick in the hard rock world. Born in a trailer off-the-grid in Montana, Tim's journey is nothing short of extraordinary. At barely eighteen, he left his home state with a relentless drive to pursue music. From performing on The Late Show with David Letterman as an independent artist to collaborating with legends like Billy Gibbons and Kid Rock, Tim has carved out a niche that's all his own. His breakout single, "Devil You Know," was hailed as one of the best rock songs of 2023 by LoudWire, and he's been recognized as an “On The Verge Artist” by iHeartRadio. In this episode, Tim shares stories from his tumultuous upbringing, his rise to fame, and his incredible experiences with icons like Dave Grohl and Charlie Sheen. Tim's journey doesn't stop at music. He and Billy Gibbons recently purchased the historic Wise River Club in Montana, bringing him full circle back to his roots. Inspired by his return home, Tim is gearing up to release his 2024 album, "Savage," which promises to hit harder and louder than ever. We dive into the making of this highly anticipated album, the inspiration behind the title track, and what fans can expect from his upcoming tours with rock heavyweights like Staind, Seether, and Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains. Send us a Text Message.Scotty Austin isn't your ordinary or average run-of-the-mill rock star. With a remarkable track record playing across the United States, as well as being a multi-instrumentalist in numerous genres, it is clear he has a unique perspective when it comes to creating music. Hailing from Parsons, Tennessee, his interest in various instruments started at a young age when he began reading music in kindergarten while also gaining experience in the family band at church. By the late 90s, Scotty began expanding on his knowledge of music genres and branching out to multiple styles such as percussion and classical guitar performance before earning his spot as the band leader of the official NASCAR Rolling Thunder band for an entire season. His accomplishments continued when around the early 2000s, he won fourth place in the world during the International Blues Contest while representing Memphis, Tennessee. Shortly after, Scotty collaborated with a new original group and recording artist, Ash Bowers, along with Jason Aldean's label, Broken Bow Records, as well as the sister label, Stoney Creek Records. It wasn't long until Scotty decided to start his own original project, an indie rock band called Trash the Brand. He had wanted to record and play songs that he had written but never had the chance to play. Within weeks of forming, he was playing to packed houses and venues which in turn caught the attention of a few people in the music industry. Soon Scotty found himself in contact with Jeff Hanson (manager of Creed and Saving Abel), who offered to manage him. While negotiating, he asked Hanson to put him on the show with Saving Abel that was happening that weekend in Memphis. He was given the opening spot for the concert. A few days after the show, Scotty was asked to front Saving Abel in which he accepted and has since been with for over 8 years. Scotty Austin has used his natural talent and ear for distinct sounds to produce expressive song lyrics and music throughout his chttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and brought to you as always by The Barn Media Group. This past week, the world lost Jon Wysocki. You may know him as the original drummer for Staind, or from his time in SOiL. The Itch knew him as the drummer for Lydia's Castle, one of the first bands to approach us directly about appearing on the show. About two years ago, we spoke with his bandmates Tonya and Cody. It was an insightful, vulnerable, and humorous conversation, and they had nothing but praise for Jon. This week, in support of them as they navigate the grief of their loss, we're reposting our interview with Lydia's Castle. Give them a listen. Give them some love. This one's for Jon. Per a Patreon suggestion, Check Your Brain's Tony Mazur does an entire podcast defending the short-lived and much-maligned 1990s genre that was called nu metal. Bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Linkin Park, Slipknot, Staind, Sevendust, and others don't seem too bad to Tony, as compared to what is promoted on rock radio today. He also gets into what led up to nu metal, as well as the heavy metal genre's history dating back to the 1960s. Be sure to subscribe to Tony's Patreon. $3 gets you just audio, $5 gets video AND audio, and $10 has all of the above, as well as bonus podcasts per week. Visit Patreon.com/TonyMazur. Ever wondered why Nickelback gets such a bad rap? Join us as we rock out to the memories of our emo days and unpack the layers of love and loathing for those power chord heroes. Sam, Brittany, and your host Steve share a laugh and maybe a few eye-rolls, reflecting on the bands like Staind and Evanescence that defined our angsty youth. Brittany's guitar-strumming stories will take you back to the days of checkerboard Vans and studded belts, while we also confront the cultural storm that Dipset's fashion unleashed.Strap in for a wild ride through the spiritual echoes of Christian rock, where Creed and Skillet strike a chord, and dive into our current fervor for rock over rap. Female powerhouses in the rock scene steal the spotlight, as we pay homage to the fierce Fireflight, the iconic Heart, and Gwen Stefani's ever-evolving allure. The venues may have changed, but the exhilarating pulse of live music—and our debate over it—remains as spirited as ever. But it's not all throwbacks and head-banging; we get real about the serious undertones of substance use and the importance of accountability. Personal stories of transformation and growth remind us that the music we love can also be a mirror to our own lives. Join us as we navigate the intricate dance of communication, where every word counts, and where active listening can be the key to understanding and change. This episode is more than a playlist of nostalgia—it's a journey through the growing pains and gains of life's rock anthem.
