Bethany Handley was always an outdoorsy kid. Climbing mountains, crossing rivers or surfing in the sea near her home in South Wales, she lived and worked in the wild, with a job as an outdoor activity instructor. All that changed in the matter of a few months as illness left her in a wheelchair. Instead of being out and about, she found herself in a rural home where all the paths she once walked were blocked off to her by stiles whose existence she'd once barely noticed.Yet she has been determined not to let that stop her enjoying nature, doing everything she can to get out in the great outdoors — from surfing on a special board adapted for her by her brother, to getting her partner's help to climb ridges in the Black Mountains. We're absolutely delighted that Bethany joined James Fisher for this week's instalment of the Country Life Podcast. She tells her story with grace, honesty and humour — a story she's also shared in a new book, My Body is a Meadow: Finding Freedom in the Outdoors, published on May 7, 2026.Bethany talks about everything from the thoughts that ran through her head as she lay in her hospital bed to the efforts she makes today to campaign for better access to the countryside for the huge number of people in Britain who face problems getting around. It's a fascinating and salutary glimpse into a different life; you'll never take your legs for granted again. My Body is a Meadow: Finding Freedom in the Outdoors by Bethany Handley is published by Headline — you can order a copy here.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Bethany HandleyProducer and Editor: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. April 19, 2026Today's Reading: John 10:11-16Daily Lectionary: Exodus 32:15-35; Luke 6:39-49“I am the Good Shepherd.” (John 10:11a) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Sheep need a shepherd. Sheep depend on a shepherd who will lead, provide, and protect. Otherwise, sheep wander, get lost, and in their lostness can be easy prey for the wolves.Isaiah says: “all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned – every one – to his own way,” (53:6). It is as if we were in a race to see who could rebel and sprint from God the fastest! Green pastures? Still waters? Soul restoration? Righteous paths? Guiding presence in the very deep shadow of death? Comforting rod and staff? A banquet table? A divine home? No thanks! We will go it alone! We will be independent and self-sustaining. We will follow every false path. We will chase down every poisoned weed and lap up every polluted puddle. And to top it off, we will put ourselves under a hired hand, who doesn't give a farthing about us. He will let us do anything that floats our boats. And we won't even notice the hireling as he hightails it as the wolf creeps, snarls, and attacks. This scenario of sheep insisting on their own waywardness will not end well. It will end hellishly! Damnationally! So it is time to repent. Turn from such sinful straying. Turn from going our own independent way. And then be turned to THE GOOD SHEPHERD – the Lord Jesus Christ in faith who does what it takes to salvationally find and rescue us, His wandering sheep, so that we will be totally dependent on Him. Why? Because “the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep … I lay down my life for the sheep.” He is preaching His Good-Friday-on-the-cross death. This is the only death that atones for all sin, including yours. Here is the bottom line. Your salvation as a sheep all boils down to dependency. Or to put it quite bluntly: you cannot save yourself, no matter how hard you try. You need THE GOOD SHEPHERD, Jesus, the Bishop of our souls (1 Peter 3:25), who laid down His life into death – His Good Friday death on the cross FOR YOU. Dependent on Good Shepherd Jesus, we listen to His voice that categorically proclaims: “I died and rose FOR YOU. At My Table, I give you My Body and Blood, and I promise all your sin is forgiven. You're in my flock. I've got you.” To which faith-full sheep say: “Amen. Thank you. Thank you, Jesus!” In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who call us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Haresh Patel, Founder of Diagnostic MD AI, discusses the transformative potential of AI in healthcare diagnostics, particularly for patients with chronic or complex issues. Based on his own struggle to get an accurate diagnosis of an autoimmune condition, Haresh has developed a patient-centric platform where individuals can build their complete health story, integrating modern and functional medicine with a more holistic approach, which AI analyzes to help doctors connect disparate symptoms, ask the right questions, identify patterns, and reach the correct diagnosis faster while reducing human bias. Haresh talks about his own journey in his book The Ghost in My Body, where he emphasizes the need to identify the root cause of disease and to understand the patient narrative over time. Haresh explains, "Sometimes that story has to come together in different ways because sometimes the patient doesn't want to share it or doesn't remember. But if we can get the whole story, then we're going to have a much better chance. AI is going to open up the world of possibilities. And I immediately went into high gear because that's exactly what I did with the prior company that I sold to State Street Bank. It was a FinTech platform, but we had FinTech investors put together all of their fragmented data, create a visualization so they could actually see patterns." "In the medical world, we're a machine too, but the difference is we had a symptom, which is a scenario. And so I all of a sudden thought, wow, I can solve this problem with AI, and if I can help solve one person's problem, my 12 years of suffering while I was building this company will all be worth it. So that's kind of a quick overview about how this all came together. Had I not had any of the experiences of my medical journey or my own journey in the FinTech world, and how I connected the dots, maybe this idea might not have sparked with me. Maybe somebody else would've gotten that spark." #EmpoweredPatient #HealthcareInnovation #AutoimmuneAwareness #PatientAdvocacy #HealthTech #ChronicIllnessJourney #MedicalMystery #PatientEmpowerment #TechForGood#HolisticHealth#AIDiagnostics #DigitalHealth #PatientCare #MedicalInnovation #HealthcareAI #IntegrativeMedicine #HealthTechnology #MedicalDiagnostics Hareshpatel.ai Download the transcript here

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."Today bring to Me THE SOULS OF THOSE WHO HAVE SEPARATED THEMSELVES FROM MY CHURCH, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. During My bitter Passion they tore at My Body and Heart, that is, My Church. As they return to unity with the Church, My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion." Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy. Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son's Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces by obstinately persisting in their errors. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which He underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen.Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet1 - Use a Rosary(Optional Opening Prayer) You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.(Repeat three times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!2 - On the three beads of the rosary pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Apostles Creed:I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.3 - Begin each decade with the Our Father beads by praying:Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. 4 - Complete the decade on the 10 Hail Mary beads by praying:For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each decade on the rosary beads5 - Once you have prayed all 5 decades, you finish the Chaplet by praying the following prayer 3 times:Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.(Optional Closing Prayer) Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us, and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments, we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence, submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.Amen.In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Hello Beautiful, I'm so grateful you're here with me.
Rebecca is excited to chat with Canadian author Leslie Shimotakahara about her latest novel, The Breakwater, which will be published by Cormorant Books in April 2026. https://www.cormorantbooks.com/Books/T/The-Breakwater "One morning in Toronto, Cathy Matsumoto's father, Yasuo, calls to announce he intends to visit a dying cousin in British Columbia. Cathy's never heard of this mysterious relative before, but she begrudgingly agrees to plan a family trip with her father and daughter, Tessa, to Victoria, the hometown Yas was forcibly evicted from when Japanese Canadians were interned during World War Two. It's only in BC that Cathy learns this “cousin” is actually Yas's younger brother, Stum, who's been languishing in psychiatric care, abandoned, ever since Yas committed him to Essondale Asylum before the war. Yas tries to fend off probing questions from his daughter and granddaughter, but revisiting old haunts brings back memories of the brothers' boyhood rivalry and coming-of-age near Victoria's Chinatown, when Yas's resolve to hold their fractured family together clashed against Stum's troublesome turn toward a life of gambling, crime, and consorting with prostitutes. In this heartbreaking family story, two brothers, both old men not far from death, must at last confront long-buried family secrets — and their lingering effects on subsequent generations." What does it really look like to teach self-awareness… outdoors? In this first episode of the SEL Outdoors: One Competency at a Time series, I'm sharing how I scaffold self-awareness with my primary students using simple, meaningful outdoor practices. From picture books like The Color Monster, In My Heart, and Listening to My Body, to nature walks, circle discussions, sit spots, and journaling—you'll hear real, practical ways to help students notice their thoughts, emotions, and bodies in connection with the natural world. These are approachable entry points you can try right away—while also giving you a glimpse into the deeper, more intentional work that's possible when these experiences are thoughtfully connected over time.If this episode resonates with you, I'd love to invite you to join me and Jade Berrill for our 4-part course, Social-Emotional Learning in Nature, offered through the Outdoor Learning School & Store this April. Together, we'll explore how to build a cohesive, curriculum-connected approach to SEL through outdoor learning.✨ All sessions are recorded, so you can participate in a way that fits your schedule.Let's begin with a simple question: What are you noticing… within yourself?
This is a replay of one of our highlight conversations from the archive. Originally released September 2024.Amy Kenny, author of 'My Body Is Not A Prayer Request,' joins Will for a discussion about disability justice and ableism in the church. She shares her experiences of being prayed over for her disability to be erased and the harmful treatment she received in the church. Amy emphasises the importance of recognising the image of God in disabled bodies and reframing our understanding of healing and curing. She challenges the ableist language, assumptions, and practices that exist in churches and calls for a more inclusive and holistic approach to faith. The conversation explores the themes of inclusivity, disability in scripture, and creating communities that fully receive the gifts of all members. Amy shares her journey of accepting and being proud of her disabled identity and how her theology has evolved to embrace disability. She emphasises the need to move beyond tolerance and charity towards celebrating and learning from disabled individuals. Amy also discusses the importance of unlearning ableism, creating cultures of access, and developing a community care network for disabled members. The conversation concludes with final thoughts for both disabled and non-disabled listeners.Amy's website: https://amy-kenny.com/Amy's book: 'My Body is not a Prayer Request'Want to reach out and let us know your thoughts or suggestions for the show? Send a textHaresh Patel is a Silicon Valley CEO turned HealthTech innovator who has spent his career solving complex systems across technology, finance, and human health.Born in India and raised in New Hampshire, Haresh earned his electrical engineering degree from the University of Notre Dame before beginning a 25 year journey in Silicon Valley. His leadership spanned semiconductor and technology companies including Texas Instruments, PMC Sierra, Agilent, and WJ Communications, before culminating in the founding of Mercatus. What began as a kitchen table startup grew into the global standard for private market investment technology, supporting over $1.5 trillion in assets under management before being acquired by State Street.Haresh's most profound breakthrough did not happen in a boardroom but in a healing room. For 55 years, he lived with unexplained health symptoms that twelve specialists could not diagnose. Refusing to accept that there were no answers, Haresh applied the same systems thinking and pattern recognition that powered his business success to his own body. By connecting the dots conventional medicine had missed, he uncovered the root causes behind his condition, an experience that fundamentally reshaped his life and purpose.Today, he is the founder of Diagnostic MD AI and a leading advocate for integrating conventional medicine with proven alternative approaches through patient-centric, AI-driven diagnostics. He believes the future of healthcare lies not in choosing between Eastern and Western medicine, but in intelligently combining their strengths to understand the whole system. His forthcoming book, The Ghost in My Body, chronicles this journey from medical dead ends to healing breakthroughs, offering both a deeply personal story and a vision for how healthcare can evolve.https://hareshpatel.ai/Use code FA FOR 40% OFF Athletic greens is a non-negotiable part of my daily routine. Drawing from her experience as an author and cultural critic who consistently challenges predictable opinions, Roxane Gay urges us to embrace the danger and discomfort of dissent. But in an age of polarised opinion warfare, this comes at a personal and professional cost. Courage is an essential ingredient in this strategy, but it can only take you so far. When the tide of viral criticism, is both toxic and overwhelming, it can seem rational either to give up on nuance or withdraw. What does it take to stand your ground and fight for complex and difficult ideas? Roxane Gay's writing appears in Best American Nonrequired Reading 2018, Best American Mystery Stories 2014, Best American Short Stories 2012, Best Sex Writing 2012, Harper's Bazaar, A Public Space, McSweeney's, Tin House, Oxford American, American Short Fiction, Virginia Quarterly Review, and many others. She is a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times where she also writes the "Work Friend" column. She is the author of the books Ayiti, An Untamed State, The New York Times' bestselling Bad Feminist, the nationally bestselling Bad Feminist and The New York Times' bestselling Hunger: A Memoir of My Body and the nationally bestselling Opinions: A Decade of Arguments, Criticism, and Minding Other People's Business. She is also the author of the Eisner Award winning World of Wakanda for Marvel and the editor of Best American Short Stories 2018. She is currently at work on film and television projects, a book of writing advice, an essay collection about television and culture, and a YA novel entitled The Year I Learned Everything. TODAY'S LESSONLet's be honest—some of the deepest wounds in life don't come from strangers, they come from the Church. A careless word, a betrayal by a leader, gossip that cuts, rejection from people who should have embraced you… church hurt runs deep. And here's the harsh reality: when the wound comes from God's family, it can shake your faith in God Himself. But here's what you need to hear: people may fail you, but Jesus never will. The Church was never perfect, because it's made up of imperfect people. If you expect flawless community, you'll always end up disappointed. But if you set your eyes on Christ, you'll find healing even when others wound you.Psalm 34 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” That means He doesn't stand at a distance saying, “Toughen up.” He draws close. He binds wounds. He restores. And here's the kicker: healing from church hurt isn't just about you. It's also about the Body. Because when we choose bitterness, we stay trapped. But when we choose forgiveness, we free ourselves and open the door for reconciliation. Some of you listening right now—you've been avoiding church because of past hurt. You've written off community because of one wound. And God is saying to you: “Come back. Don't let the pain of people rob you of My Presence in My Body.”The Church doesn't heal because it's perfect. It heals because Christ is present.

This story was read as a part of a live show hosted by the great Judy Blume, on the subject of banned books, something she personally knows about. This story hasn't been banned on its own, but many of Roxane Gay's works have, including Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture and Hunger: A Memoir of My Body. Because these bans are so prevalent, and so pernicious, we wanted to talk about that cultural argument, too. Surprising to absolutely no one, we at Too Hot are free speech boosters; so after the reading, we feature a fascinating talk with Amanda Jones, the author of That Librarian: The Fight Against Book Banning in America, who is on the frontline of this culture war in Louisiana. The story was read by actress Jessica Hecht. Our host is Aparna Nancherla.
