January 11th, 2025 is the 20th Anniversary of this legendary day at the Tower. Since its the 25th Anniversary, we decided to re-release this episode. Enjoy! January 11th, 2000 is a very historic day in Oklahoma City concert history. Slipknot was scheduled to play the Tower Theater for the 3rd time. The first show, they didn't have enough room to play the show due to being the opener on a Coal Chamber & Machine Head Package Tour. Max & Jimmy Johnson from Element, scramble, put their heads together to figure out how to get Slipknot back to OKC to play a headlining date. They have an off day on a Monday 10 days later, resulting in Slipknot coming back to play for 400 or so people with Element & Lowlife opening the show. Max see's the popularity of the band growing & wants to bring them back through again & the January 11th, 2000 date was booked. Keep in mind, during this time, 23rd street OKC, was not the nice vibrant neighborhood that it is now! It was a dangerous place to be with vacant store fronts everywhere. We set down with Max Baker Jr. & Jeff Brownen to tell their accounts of what happned that day, where they were during the chaos, the discussions between the band management & the booking agent, & paying the band, all before Slipknot decided not to play. There were rumors for years about what happened that night, Hopefully this clears up some of the chaos & confusion & brings people back together! Published & Aired Feb. 28th, 2000 on MTV News - "It was a bad gig, man. We learned out lesson," Corey Taylor (#8) continued. "We're never going to play there again. We're going to play a place that will hold everybody. And he will not be involved," percussionist Shawn Crahan (#6) added. https://www.mtv.com/news/k9uiqu/slipknot-has-its-say-on-oklahoma-city-concert-flap Fast Forward 22 years later to 2022 & Max Baker Jr. was involved in a Slipknot show in Oklahoma, where his company The Baker Boys did production load in & load out.... and yes, Max was in the building, from start to finish! We left off at July 17th of 1999 with a Hank Williams Jr. show at the Zoo Amp. Collective Soul at the TnT Building. August 19th, 1999 with Testament at the Tower! We start the Slipknot discussion.... Most people don't realize the first time Slipknot was scheduled to play the Tower, wasn't the one that made national news & due to the cancellation & the angry fans causing a riot. This Slipknot show, they were supposed to open for Coal Chamber & Machine Head, there wasn't enough room on the stage once backlined, & they didn't have enough room to load their gear on stage. Most people don't realize, the first three shows Slipknot was booked to play in OKC were all at the Tower Theater, the 2nd one was the only one that actually happened. The 3rd one is the one didn't happen & the end result made MTV News. Max also brought the legends Manowar aka the loudest band on earth, to the Tower Theater with Forte opening! Steve Vai returns to OKC to play the Boar's Head, this time the bus remains intact. More on the sale of Tower Theater. Verizon Wireless customers have been experiencing significant service interruptions in Atlanta, DC, Denver, Minneapolis, NYC and Philadelphia. A spokesman, "Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue." At the request of the CDC, the Justice Department has announced that it will appeal a ruling by a federal judge in Tampa that effectively ended the federal mask mandate on planes, trains and in travel hubs. On the road in New Hampshire, President Biden said the decision for an individual to wear a mask is "up to them." As the west faces another potentially devastating fire season, flocks of sheep appear to be a "powerful secret weapon" in addressing buildups of natural fuel that are a significant contributing factor. In March 2020, the live event industry shut down overnight, shuttering growth plans, jobs, and some businesses. There was a mass exodus of talented artists, entertainers and event professionals. But others managed to stick around, pivoting to virtual events and shifting their businesses online while betting that the industry would in fact, bounce back. In this episode we talk to Stephen Tyler, one of the operating partners at the historic Tower Theatre, which originally opened in 1937 and is one of Oklahoma City's last original movie houses with an intact auditorium and iconic neon marquee. After many years of movie premieres and historic runs of classic films, the Tower Theatre closed in 1989. In 2017, Stephen, along with Chad Jabee, the Pivot Group and other partners re-opened Tower Theatre as a live music, movie and event venue in the heart of OKC's Uptown 23rd district. Join us as we listen to how they pivoted during the pandemic and what they are predicting for the future of the industry. For time reference, this episode was recorded in March 2021. 027: STEVE GORMAN (Black Crowes) Book Talk Live from San Francisco 1/19/2020

Episode 027 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* welcomes the legendary STEVE GORMAN (Black Crowes) for a very special edition of this program. The longtime drummer and co-founder of The Black Crowes is doing a ton of media work, podcasts and live appearances in support of his riveting rock n' roll bio "Hard 2 Handle: The Life & Death of The Black Crowes, A Memoir". I was honored and truly touched when Steve personally reached out and asked me to host/moderate his book talk in San Francisco. The event took place on January 19, 2020 and was recorded with a live audience in the SF Ferry Building Book Passage, moments after Steve's beloved Tennessee Titans lost in the AFC Championship Game.    STEVE GORMAN Live Q&A @ 20min mark I've been a fan of The Black Crowes since we covered "Jealous Again" at my Bar Mitzvah back in 1991, and saw them for the first time at the Tower Theater in Philly back in 1993, and another two dozen or so times through around 2013. Steve Gorman was a founding member of TBC, and his masterful drumming an essential component to their sound and identity as a band. He drove the train, and provided the swing that defined their swaggering grooves. He permanently left the band (again) in 2013, and they apparently disbanded in a dust cloud of sibling rivalries and greed. Only to see Chris and Rich Robinson reconstitute a version of the Crowes without him, or any previous band members for that matter, last fall.  Before the brothers could announce a Live Nation summer shed tour, and now some acoustic dates to help move tickets in the softer-selling markets, Steve dropped a bomb in the form of his fascinating book, and with it burned that proverbial feathered bridge by bearing his truth, once and for all.  As has been the case with all of his book interviews - and the book itself, Steve pulls no punches and leaves nary a stone unturned in his various recollections, delivered straight no chaser. This book talk was more of an opportunity to let Steve just tell stories, so I prepared a dozen or so questions for him, then opened it up to the audience for some of their personal inquiries, of which I edited some for length/clarity. Most of the content from the conversation is rooted in his tremendously detailed memoir, or random asides from the cutting room floor. Steve reflects on everything from Ringo Starr to Jimmy Page, recording the Crowes' legendary run of 90's albums, including 2 which never came out until many years later. Steve goes down different random rabbit holes, explores the concepts of co-dependence & closure, he sets the record straight about a number of hot topics in the Crowes community. Much like the book itself, you need not be a Crowes fanatic to enjoy this colorful interview about an American rock band that is as iconic as it is divisive, and whose catalog, legacy, and career narrative should stand the test of time. It's certainly an afternoon I will never forget! Thank You Steve Gorman!  WATCH THE BOOK TALK Q&A VIDEO!
