Spencer Davis was a British rock musician and bandleader who became a major figure in the 1960s British Invasion, most notably as the founder of The Spencer Davis Group. Born in Swansea, Wales, Davis began his musical journey at a young age, inspired by American blues, jazz, and skiffle music. After moving to Birmingham to attend university, Davis immersed himself in the city's burgeoning music scene, forming the Rhythm and Blues Quartet in 1963, which quickly evolved into The Spencer Davis Group. The band's classic lineup—featuring Spencer Davis on guitar and vocals, Steve Winwood on keyboards and vocals, Muff Winwood on bass, and Pete York on drums—created a distinctive blend of R&B, blues, and rock. With Steve Winwood's soulful voice at the forefront, the band quickly found success with chart-topping hits like "Keep On Running," "Somebody Help Me," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man." These tracks became iconic anthems of the era, solidifying their place in British rock history. The Spencer Davis Group was known for its energetic performances and blues-driven sound, and their influence extended across the Atlantic, helping to shape the sound of the British Invasion in the U.S. Davis's keen eye for talent was evident in his discovery of Steve Winwood, whose vocals and keyboard skills were integral to the group's success. While Steve Winwood's presence made the band famous, Davis was the guiding force, handling the management and direction of the group. When Winwood left in 1967 to form Traffic, The Spencer Davis Group underwent changes but continued to release music. Though the post-Winwood years didn't achieve the same level of success, Davis remained an active and passionate musician. He relocated to the U.S. in the late 1970s and became involved in various music projects, including collaborations with other musicians and solo work. He also became an advocate for preserving the legacy of 1960s rock music. Spencer Davis's contributions to rock extended beyond just his band's success. He played a crucial role in bringing American blues and R&B influences into the British mainstream, helping shape the direction of rock music in the 1960s. His ability to bridge these genres created a lasting impact on both sides of the Atlantic. Davis continued performing well into his later years, touring and reuniting with various iterations of The Spencer Davis Group. His career, spanning over six decades, is a testament to his enduring passion for music. Spencer Davis passed away in 2020 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of musicians. His influence on rock music, particularly the fusion of blues and rock, remains a cornerstone of his legacy. As the leader of one of the British Invasion's most iconic bands, Spencer Davis helped to define the sound of an era, and his contributions to music continue to resonate today. This week we're joined by Spencer's friend and bandmate, Ed Tree who is a highly respected American guitarist, producer, and songwriter known for his versatile work across genres like rock, Americana, country, and blues. He gained widespread recognition for his collaboration with British rock icon Spencer Davis, performing as Davis's guitarist and musical partner for many years. Tree's exceptional guitar skills and keen musical sensibilities made him an integral part of Davis's live performances, adding depth to the iconic sound of The Spencer Davis Group in its later iterations. Beyond his work with Spencer, Ed Tree has enjoyed a rich career as a session musician, playing with renowned artists such as Rita Coolidge, Juice Newton, and Al Stewart. He has also produced numerous albums, further solidifying his reputation in the music industry. As a songwriter, Tree has contributed to a wide array of projects, showcasing his talent for crafting songs that resonate across multiple genres. Ed honours his friend Spencer by sharing his story with us.

There's a new world coming, With a better way to live. And I'm gonna make it happen, As I have so much to give. ☉ I'm in SPAIN and will be in Mallorca this Friday. Let's get together! https://bit.ly/kaypacha-events This is a packed full Moon as she is conjunct serious Saturn in the sign of Pisces, which has to do with surrender, giving, chaos, and confusion. As I go into in this report, stable, structured Saturnian reality is greatly challenged in the sign of Pisces (until 2026), which dissolves 3D reality in favor of a spiritual reality that is governed by a different set of laws/rules. It is/will feel like the tapestry of life is unraveling, and that is because it is! As our Sabian symbol for the degree of the full Moon pictures, this is both the end of an era/epoch and the very start of a new one. As we close a chapter of human evolution and prepare for a new beginning, many of us will feel lost, confused, and scared as what we held onto as real, dependable, and stable no longer exists. This is in the realm of financial security, relationships, and, most importantly, our own identity… who am I really? This question may be living deeply in our souls during this time. Knowing that we are co-creators of our reality, it becomes ever more critical to listen to ourselves and the stories we tell ourselves about what is happening inside and out as our thoughts create reality. This week's mantra stresses that we are powerful light/love beings with unique gifts to share, give, and heal ourselves and others. Focusing on what is beautiful, both within and without, creates more beauty, warmth, joy, and abundance in our lives. Let's do it! He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where he studied composing with John Adams and double bass with San Francisco Symphony bassists.[5]He worked with Van Morrison, Oingo Boingo, and David Grisman. His 1983 album Solo won Down Beat magazine's Record of the Year award. On the albums Duets and Trios, he worked with Bobby McFerrin, Rickie Lee Jones, Cheryl Bentyne, Lou Reed, Stéphane Grappelli, Jerry Garcia, Brian Wilson, Willie Dixon, Branford Marsalis, Bob Weir, Edie Brickell, Les Claypool, Neil Young, and Elvis Costello.Duets was nominated for three Grammy Awards. Bobby McFerrin won for "Brothers", which was performed with Wasserman. Wasserman also won Holland's Edison Award for Record of the Year. His 2000 album, Space Island, incorporated more contemporary musical elements. RatDog, which he co-founded with Bob Weir from the Grateful Dead, occupied much of his time. He toured extensively with Lou Reed.Wasserman was a judge for the sixth-tenth annual Independent Music Awards.[8]Rob Wasserman died on June 29, 2016. Cause of death was cancer.[9] Entombment was made in Salem Memorial Park and Garden at Colma, California.[10] Willie Dixon (1915-1992) was one of the preeminent blues songwriters and performers of all time. The Grateful Dead covered a fairly lengthy list of his songs, attesting to his influence on the band: “Down in the Bottom,” “I Ain't Superstitious,” “I Just Want to Make Love To You,” “Little Red Rooster,” “The Same Thing,” “Spoonful,” and “Wang Dang Doodle.” The song was written during the sessions for Rob Wasserman's Trios album. “Guitar Player” magazine ran an interview with Weir in 1993:“I had this chord progression and melody that I wanted to run by Willie to see if he liked it .... he did, so he started dashing off words. He wanted me to run a certain section by him again and stuff like that, and we started working on a bridge. Then he dashes off this sheet of lyrics and hands it to me. Now I'm really stoked to be working with the legendary Willie Dixon and I'm prepared for just about anything.“He hands these lyrics to me and I'm reading through them. And they seem, you know, awfully simplistic. Like there wasn't a whole lot to them....“....Now he wants me to read through it and sing the melody I have and see if they fit. And so I started singing through these simplistic lyrics, and that simplicity takes on a whole other direction.“By the time I had sung through them, it's like my head is suddenly eons wide. I can hear what's happening just sort of echoing around in there and I'm astounded by the simple grace of what he has just presented to me. I'm sitting there with my mouth open literally, and Willie's laughing. He's just sitting there laughing, saying, 'Now you see it. Now you see it. That's the wisdom of the blues.'” David Dodd (author of Complete Grateful Dead Annotated Lyrics) – “Weir's songs from this era (anything from “Victim or the Crime” forward) seem aggressively innovative, shall we say. The rhythmic patterns, the big multi-layered chords, the changes in meter and tone, all add up to something that seems calculated to disrupt any comfort we might have been sinking into. OK, I didn't say that very well, but anyone who has struggled with these late-period Weir songs knows what I mean.” SHOW #3: Childhood's End Track No. 8 3:10 – 4:15 A “new” Phil tune, first played July 24, 1994 at Deer Creek Music Center, Noblesville, IN Played 11 times in concert Last played July 9, 1995 at Soldier Field – last show Never released on a studio album “Childhood's End” on 7/20/94 – the last original Grateful Dead song to enter the live repertoire, written and sung by Phil Lesh. Per John Hilgart of 4CPComics, the background story is that Lesh (and perhaps the others) felt that new songs would help fuel Garcia engagement in a period when Jerry was headed in the same direction as in the mid-1980s, when his drugged-out-bad-health put him in a coma that he narrowly survived – living on to drive the 1989-onward renaissance of the band. In the 1995 remake, Jerry died. The big musical difference between those two episodes is that everyone else in the band had their shit together in 1994, whereas the whole band was a mess in 1986. John's general take on post-Brent 1990's Dead is that they were not to be dismissed – a band that had stopped depending on Garcia's leadership to determine the musical outcome, but who were always therefore also ready when Garcia was feeling spry. Weir has said something to that effect. And when Garcia was feeling spry, it was just as you would wish it to be. SHOW #4: Way To Go Home Track No. 14 2:59 – 4:12 A “new” Vince song music by Vince and Bob Bralove, lyrics by Robert Hunter. First played February 23, 1992 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Played 92 times Last played June 28, 1995 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills Also wrote Samba In The Rain for the Dead. Bob Bralove is a keyboard–synthesizer player who worked as a sound technician with the Grateful Dead from 1986 to 1995. Throughout his tenure, he performed as an auxiliary musician throughout "Drums" and "Space", the band's signature aleatoric music segments.[1]Accordingly, he played a key role in their integration of MIDI technology (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a technical standard that describes a communications protocol, digital interface, and electrical connectors that connect a wide variety of electronic musical instruments, computers, and related audio devices for playing, editing, and recording music.[1] ; Before the development of MIDI, electronic musical instruments from different manufacturers could generally not communicate with each other. This meant that a musician could not, for example, plug a Roland keyboard into a Yamaha synthesizer module. With MIDI, any MIDI-compatible keyboard (or other controller device) can be connected to any other MIDI-compatible sequencer, sound module, drum machine, synthesizer, or computer, even if they are made by different manufacturers.), first working with drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, keyboardist Brent Mydland, and later guitarist Bob Weir and synthesizer/piano player Vince Welnick. He also co-wrote several songs with Weir and Welnick, including "Picasso Moon" on Built to Last (1989) and "Way to Go Home" and "Easy Answers", which were slated to appear on the band's unfinished fourteenth studio album. (A live reconstruction, Ready or Not, was ultimately released in 2019 and contains both songs.) Perhaps his most significant project with the band was curating excerpts from "Drums" and "Space" on Infrared Roses, a 1991 compilation album. "Parallelogram" and "Little Nemo in Nightland" are some of his most notable "compositions" from this release.Bralove was also a member and producer of the Psychedelic Keyboard Trio, along with Welnick and fellow former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten.[2] Bralove and Constanten also collaborated as Dose Hermanos, a showcase for their improvisational keyboard work; since 1998, they have toured irregularly and released five albums under the moniker. Bralove also worked with Stevie Wonder, setting up and programming Wonder's synthesizers including while he was touring.[3] OUTRO: Days Between Track No. 20 5:55 – 7:24 “new” Jerry tune First played February 22, 1993 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Played 42 times by the Dead Last played June 24, 1995 at RFK Stadium in D.C. It has become a favorite of the surviving band members, played the third night at the 50th Anniversary Shows at Soldier Field in 2015 and frequently played by Dead & Co. with Bobby singing, Also played by Bob Weir and Wolf Bros. and Phil and Friends. Great tune to end this episode. David Dodd: “Days Between” has come to be an anthem that makes us remember Garcia in a particular way, and, in particular, the days between his birth date of August 1 and his death date of August 9. It's a fitting song for such thoughts, with its big sweeping chords and its lyrics heavy with nostalgia and longing. There's a word in German, sehnsucht, that lacks a proper emotional counterpart in English, but which means, roughly, “longing.” It carries a sense of wishing you could see something—see something again, see something at all—that something is missing from your eyes and from your presence. I find that “Days Between” belongs with a raft of songs that induce this feeling in me.“Days Between,” a late song in the Robert Hunter / Jerry Garcia songbook, was perhaps their last collaboration on a big, significant song, one that ranks with “Dark Star” and “Terrapin Station” as ambitious and intentionally grand. (I was talking the other day with a friend, about Garcia's playing and songwriting, and the thought came up that Garcia, like few others, was unafraid of grandeur, and could successfully pull it off. Same with Hunter.) During its relatively short time in the live repertoire, they played it 41 times, always in the second set, and fairly frequently rising out of the Drums. Phil: “I don't know whether to weep with joy at the beauty of the vision or with sadness at the impassable chasm of time between the golden past and the often painful present.”

Hey Now, this week we'll play the second set from the band's performance on April 7, 1987 at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. 'Box of Rain' is the opener here, a rather unusual choice. A short 'I Need a Miracle' follows into 'Bertha'. 'Ship of Fools' slows things down, but they then go into another crowd favorite, 'Man Smart, Women Smarter' before going into a fairly lengthy drums and Space. Out of Space, they bridge into 'Gimme Some Lovin' which then segues nicely into a fine 'Morning Dew'. A nice 'Throwing Stones' > 'Not Fade Away' combo closes the set but the band returns for a pleasing rendition of 'The Mighty Quinn'. Grateful Dead Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford , NJ 4/7/1987 - Tuesday Two Box Of Rain [5:08] I Need A Miracle [3:20] > Bertha [6:23] Ship Of Fools [8:03] Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [7:21] > Drums [10:31] > Space [11:#03] > Gimme Some Lovin' [4:46] > Morning Dew [10:43] > Throwing Stones [8:52] > Not Fade Away [5:02] Encore The Mighty Quinn (Quinn The Eskimo) [4:21] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod041423.mp3 "Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine... Zig At The Gig with Pete Francis formerly of Dispatch interview 2021 Pete Francis is a songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1995, he founded the band Dispatch, who became the first ever independent band to sell out Madison Square Garden. They went on to tour through other major venues across the country, including Red Rocks, TD Garden, and The Greek Theaters in both San Francisco and LA. Over the course of their career, they have also brought their live show to audiences in Europe and Australia. Pete has released eight solo records and has toured with such diverse acts as Ziggy Marley, Blues Traveler, and G Love and Special Sauce. One of his favorite gigs was on stage in Sun Valley, Idaho shredding guitar riffs with Steve Miller on “Fly Like An Eagle.” In the Spring of 2021, Pete will be releasing two new EPs, Humble Down and Sun Fuzz. This new work brings together Pete’s love for a broad range of musical styles. Humble Down is a record of self reflection and reveals his strong belief that love between two people should be simple, humble, and kind. On vocals he is joined by his wife, Katie. Their two voices and the stories they tell in these new songs have a heartfelt honesty and charm to them. Musically there are hints of Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Tom Waits, and John Lennon. On the track, Gimme Some Lovin’, guitar blues master, Duke Robillard, adds his beautiful tremolo rhythm guitar and a searing and a down right dirty solo that only Duke can pull off. Break out your tie dyes and bell bottoms then simply hit play on the Sun Fuzz EP. On the title track you are swept into a funk exploratorium, a journey that feels like riding an electric wave into a multi-color sunset. The groove is infectious and the hook, “All the Lives that you’re living, all the love that you’re giving,” will be in your head as you drive to the beach. There are some great blues moments on the track “Love me in the Morning.” The song has a pumping and tight groove reminiscent of early Clapton. “Can’t Tame a Lion” is a nasty concoction of Hendrix in a blender with, White Stripes, and Blacks Keys. A distorted guitar mash-up of fuzz and friction. These two new Pete Francis EPs offer moments of calm and pensive introspection as well as the feeling of strapping on a jet pack and ripping through the outer regions of of your imagination. As usual, Pete has assembled the best musicians in the New York area. Pete’s sound is the real deal. Like a homemade bowl of soup or a perfect glass of lemonade on a scorching hot day in July. In these songs you can hear his soul. The lyrics are fresh, the grooves are blessed. Humble Down and Sun Fuzz are original works of art - composed for people who care about the craft of music and words that have true meaning. Pete will be co-teaching a songwriting class at Middlebury College for the Spring semester of 2021. Having a degree in English and Poetry at Middlebury, he is thrilled to share his expertise in the process of song creation and composition. In this week’s episode we dive into the heart of the 1980s for a complete show at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmon, VA on November 1, 1985, as well as a segment of the September 2, 1980 show at Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY. The main show finds the band competing with the intense vibe of the scene and working to will the crowd back from the brink. As a result, it features some of the most unique setlisting we’ve heard featured on a Dick’s Picks release, regardless the era. In the 1980’s segment, we hear the band toying with “Space.” before showcasing Brent’s initial impacts on the band, through a stunning “Morning Dew.”Disc One gives us our third “Dancing In The Streets” in the last two releases. The remainder of the set is upbeat, and updated takes on 70’s Dead classics here with their full band from the 80’s. Disc Two might be the most mellow set in Dick’s Picks history as “Samson & Delila” is really the only upbeat song of the night. What follows is an hour of deeply methodical and meditative music that only makes sense when one knows the intensity of the events of the night. “High Time>He’s Gone -> Spoonful>Comes A Time>Lost Sailor>Drums -> Space -> Saint Of Circumstance” bridges the second and third discs in stunning fashion. In Disc Three we move from the contemplative to the wedding party as “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “She Belongs To Me” and “Gloria” cap off a weird set that has to be heard. Finally, the set ends with a segment from 9/2/80 with a deeply engaged “Space” fading into “Iko Iko” before a stunning “Morning Dew” and “Sugar Magnolia” closes things down. It’s a wild and unique release in the overall catalogue, one that showcases The Dead at their most 80’s in 1985.This episode is dedicated to Thoughts On The Dead.36 from the Vault is production of Osiris Media. It is edited, produced and mastered by Brian Brinkman. All music composed by Amar Sastry, unless otherwise noted. Logo design by Liz Bee Art & Design. It is the time of the year to remember those who escaped from this virus ridden Earth. We present a few of those departed who played a role in the Beatles history. Paul McCartney improvises on the piano on a theme by Samuel Barber, "Adagio for Strings'. Peter Green, guitarist of Fleetwood Mac and composer of 'Albatross' is remembered by Mac Fleetwood. Albatross was the inspiration for the Beatles song 'Sun King'. Simon Posthuma: co-founder of 'The Fool', the small group of artists who designed the clothes for the Beatles (and many others) in the Sgt Pepper era, decorated the Apple Store, George Harrison's house, Lennon's Rolls Royce and McCartney's piano. He befriended the Beatles and made a cameo appearance in The Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” film.” He played Norwegian Wood in memory of his friend Lennon. Terry Doran. Doran first met the Beatles in Liverpool, through Epstein, and sold the band their first car, as well as the van in which they travelled to gigs around the North of England. He went on to work at Apple. He is often cited as the inspiration behind the line "Meeting a man from the motor trade" in the Beatles' 1967 song "She's Leaving Home". Ivry Gitlis. Israeli classical violinist who played with Yoko Ono on The Rolling Stones Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus. Astrid Kirchherr. Photographer known for early Beatles images. Little Richard. Rock n’ roll pioneer whose influence spanned generations. The Beatles covered many of his songs. Chad Stuart. Half of the British Invasion-era duo Chad and Jeremy: scored a hit with the McCartney composition From a Window. Sean Connery. Bond; James Bond. Louis van Dijk. Dutch pianist. In 1970 he recorded 'Louis van Dyke plays Lennon-McCartney' in one day on the church organ of the Reformed Church in Loenen. Listen on Spotify.

First he sits down with Ryan McCombs of Soil and formerly of Drowning Pool. They talk about whether he still thought Soil would be a band 20 years after their formation, collaborations with other artists, and the band's new release Scream: The Essentials. They also talk about how/why he left Drowning Pool to rejoin Soil, and J-Bunny gets the story of Ryan's encounter with Psychostick at Dingbatz from his point of view.In the second half of the show J-Bunny sits down with Scott Wilson of Saving Abel and formerly of Tantric. They talk about how Scott wound up being asked to join Saving Abel and why he left Tantric. They also talk about how much of the band's material Scott needed to learn right away, and why Saving Abel plays shows at The Stanhope House so often.Podcast intro "Rock Intro 3" courtesy of audionautix.com. "Gimme Some Lovin'" appears on Soil's album Scream: The Essentials, and "Halo" appears on Scream: The Essentials and originally appeared on the album Scars. Hey Now! Here's a great second set for your pee-Thanksgiving preparations.. from 11/2/84 at the Berkeley Community Theater, this was probably the highlight of the run, as the band turns in a solid performance highlighted by some great Garcia licks, some amazing Phil sounds and some excellent work from Bobby and Brent. The 'Help>Slip>Frank' is as always, a great opener, and the band revs it up during the jam in Slipknot! Bobby does a fine 'Sailor>Saint' here, and Brent adds a great deal of depth to Bobby's finale during 'Sailor'. Listen as well to Phil during that Saint for an example of his unmatched abilities. They move into a strong 'Wharf Rat' in the pre-drums slot then break out 'Gimme Some Lovin' for the fist time. They finish the Playin' in the Band they started on 10/28, then finish with strong versions of 'Bertha>Good Lovin'. They return for the last 'Casey Jones' until 1992.. Here we are on what would have been Jerry Garcia's 72nd birthday.. whew .. hard to imagine how much music he would have produced had he stuck around these last 19 years. We get to share what we have, and this week that is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on July 15th, 1988. We start out with a great choice for a summer night, Scarlet->Fire... the transition is perhaps not as long as some, but there's plenty of energy here.. that energy builds with a rockin' Man Smart, Woman Smarter.. Ship of Fools follows and slows the tempo down but the band goes into Estimated->Drums->Space->Miracle which are all quite well played. The Wheel follows and then Brent leads the band into an excellent Gimme Some Lovin'. Jerry closes the set with a charged Morning Dew.. The lowpoint of the set is the encore, where Bobby is quite off key but well, no one is perfect right? Grateful Dead Greek Theater Univ of California Berkeley CA 7/15/88 set 2 Scarlet Begonias > Fire On The Mountain ; Man Smart, Woman Smarter ; Ship of Fools ; Estimated Prophet > Drums > Space > I Need A Miracle > The Wheel > Gimme Some Lovin' > Morning Dew EncoreTurn On Your Love Light You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod080114.mp3 Thanks for picking us up and listening this week.
