Parents, students, and educators are speaking out against a sweeping leadership reshuffle across the Fresno Unified School District that will reassign dozens of school administrators. The district plans to move five principals and 26 vice principals from their current campuses, including many tenured leaders with years of experience at their respective schools. Firefighters are battling an explosive fire that broke out at a large cold storage facility in Boyle Heights on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a shelter-in-place in the area due to heavy smoke. It’s possible that this fire could turn into a hazardous materials situation, according to Sky5’s Gil Leyvas, who is over the scene, so residents in the area are urged to take precautions. The Fresno Teachers Association says a “culture of fear” in Fresno Unified often shows up through subtle retaliation, as interpreters recently spoke out about ongoing safety threats and feeling ignored after trying to raise concerns internally. The post also criticizes district leadership for downplaying those experiences and prioritizing public image over real solutions, warning that this environment discourages educators from speaking out about unsafe conditions. Fresno Unified School District is facing a lawsuit from retirees who claim the district unlawfully reduced promised healthcare benefits. District leaders say financial pressures forced the changes, while retirees argue the cuts broke long‑standing commitments and jeopardize their health coverage. The Trump administration shut down several high‑profile social media accounts linked to former Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino after he refused to turn them over following his retirement. Officials say the accounts were government property, ending a months‑long dispute over control of platforms that had drawn controversy for their aggressive immigration enforcement content. Fresno Unified trustees quietly doubled their own pay during a January meeting, using vague bylaw changes that didn’t disclose the new amounts all while retirees scrambled amid stalled healthcare negotiations and the district faces a $59 million deficit. Workers and union leaders blasted the move, saying frontline staff face cuts and layoffs even as board members boost their own compensation. Teachers, classified staff, and parents spoke out at a Fresno Unified board meeting, strongly opposing planned layoffs and job freezes. Several candidates are preparing for a school board election nine months away to represent the southwest region of Fresno Unified School District. Keshia Thomas, who represents the Edison High region, is running for Fresno City Council District 3. If Thomas doesn’t make it out of the June 2 council primary, the door would open for her to seek re-election to the school board in Area 1. Fresno Unified School District trustees are set to receive a 113% pay increase beginning February 1, raising their monthly stipend from $2,111 to $4,500 despite the district facing years of projected budget deficits and declining enrollment. The 6–1 board vote follows the enactment of Assembly Bill 1390, which lifted long‑standing limits on school board compensation. Supporters say the raise reflects the demands of the role, while critics argue it’s poorly timed as the district struggles financially.
