Superintendent Misty Her of Fresno Unified School District sat down with KMJ's news partner ABC 30 to address backlash after a dossier presented to the Fresno Teachers Association (FTA) was found to contain fabricated quotes, allegedly generated using AI. The document, compiled shortly after Her assumed office, accused union leaders of personal attacks. FTA President Manuel Bonilla condemned the move as an attempt to silence criticism and called for accountability. Her admitted the quotes were AI-generated. Fresno Unified is hiring an outside consultant to handle labor negotiations communications. The FTA is criticizing the district's plan to hire a “political/communications consultant” for its negotiations' communications. Tim Orman, former chief of staff for Fresno mayors Lee Brand and Jerry Dyer, confirmed to School Zone on Wednesday that the district has tapped him for the job. His career choices throughout his life have taught him to be accountable for his actions and to manage any given situation at the same time. By learning problem-solving, teamwork, and communication with the support of my staff, Nik strives to bring the best customer service to his clients. After all, providing a positive and memorable experience to the buyers and sellers Nik works with is what he enjoys doing most. Real Estate is what he loves and helping people is clearly his passion. Joe's daughter chose to pursue an English degree after a year of traveling that Joe paid for. To continue offering his financial support, Joe had only one demand for his daughter – choose a different degree that would enable her to be financially better off. Joe's daughter thinks he is the worst dad for not helping her pay for college when he gladly paid for her brothers' medical degrees. Las Vegas high-school English teacher Laura Jeanne Penrod initially thought the grading changes at her school district made sense. Under the overhaul, students are given more chances to prove they have mastered a subject without being held to arbitrary deadlines, in recognition of challenges some children have outside school.  Over the past several weeks we've reported on many challenges the Fresno Unified School District is facing, from scores that rank it in the bottom five percent in the nation in terms of academic performance by one measure,... to fights on school campuses,... to a lack of control on campuses that many teachers and employees fear is a risk for them as well as for students. Now, those same FUSD employees are telling us they believe all of those problems, and more, maybe emanating from the same source--- a culture of retribution coming from the administration-- that they say permeates the district's policies and practices, hanging like a dark cloud over everyone. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The discipline models could be replicated throughout California public schools under legislation sponsored by State Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley). Senate Bill 274 would permanently extend the ban on willful defiance suspensions in middle and high schools after 2025. She works in both private practice and the school setting to help support children who stutter. In addition to direct therapy, Susie trains speech-language pathologists to work more effectively with students who stutter. Susie teaches the graduate-level fluency course at California State University, Fresno. During her time in Fresno Unified School District (2011-2015), Susie designed the framework for a Fluency Consultant role to utilize specialty skills and support Speech-Language Pathologists working with children who stutter. In addition, to a her quote day job, Susie also created the Junior Author’s program in September of 2020, days after the Creek Fire affected Big Creek and Pine Ridge area families. It was developed as an educationally-focused, social-emotional support for children and families feeling loss and grief due to the fire. Schools across the nation (and world) have joined together to have their students involved in helping our local kids impacted by the fire. This was a great conversation that covered a lot and Susie and I clearly share a love for just one more thing. Susie Harder, M.A., CCC-SLP is an experienced clinician who devotes much of her passion to working with children, teens, and adults who stutter. She works in private practice and the school setting to help support children who stutter, trains speech-language pathologists to work more effectively with students who stutter, provides various fluency trainings to school districts across the state, and is also directing the Junior Authors Program platform. Susie grew up in Central California and completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Fresno State. She earned her Master’s Degree at Northwestern University, rated #2 in the nation for their program. While there, she met Kristin Chmela, M.A., CCC-SLP, BCS-F, an internationally recognized fluency specialist who had a true passion for helping kids who stutter. After graduating, Kristin and Susie have continued to work closely. Susie credits her passion and knowledge for working with people who stutter to Kristin Chmela, her mentor. Susie has a history of designing and building successful programs. During her time in Fresno Unified School District (2011-2015), Susie designed and piloted a successful framework for a Fluency Consultant role to utilize specialty skills and support SLPs. In 2016, Susie created a private practice focused on supporting children, teens, and adults who stutter. Within her practice, she built a mentoring program for children and teens who stutter to help guide younger children who are experiencing similar challenges. Most recently (2020), following the devastation of the Central California Creek Fire, she decided to write a book to help children who lost homes in the fire. During the process of writing the book, she created a unique platform to reinvent how children connect with literacy and books. Through the Junior Authors Program, children are involved in ongoing votes to help build the book from rough draft to published book on Amazon. Susie’s love of working with children is evident from the first time you meet her. She cares for each one of the families she works with. She is full of positive energy, encouragement, and is an invaluable resource for anyone she works with.    Show Highlights Hometown was on fire and out of the ashes a purposeful way to build connection emerged Tips and tricks to give more voice to your staff  Junior Authors creates an excitement for learning and the ability to cope during life’s crises  How we pass along compliments can be empowering or meaningless Taking massive action quickly can accomplish more than planning for action Be a recovering perfectionist for progress  Create opportunities to celebrate  Life feels like the hundred pieces puzzle “If we can, for ourselves and for our kids, find that Thing that gives us that real inspiration and that true, genuine, ‘I am excited about today because I get to do blank, not I have to do blank, but I get to do blank.’ That really can shift so much of  pulling back from the day and kind of move into the launch forward into the day.” -Susie Harder   Full Transcript Susie Harder Transcript   Susie Harder’s Resources & Contact Info:   The Miracle Morning Junior Authors Program Twitter LinkedIn     Looking for more?
