California’s ballot counting process routinely stretches days or even weeks after Election Day, largely because of how the state handles vote-by-mail. Millions of ballots are sent to voters, and any ballot postmarked by Election Day can still arrive up to seven days later and be counted. Officials must also verify signatures, process provisional ballots, and reconcile records, which slows results but is designed to ensure accuracy over speed. At the same time, a growing legal fight is unfolding over voter rolls. Federal prosecutors say California is blocking access to statewide voter registration records needed for an audit, arguing federal law allows that review. State officials have resisted, citing privacy protections and existing safeguards like signature checks and post-election audits. Surveillance video obtained by KMJ news partner ABC30 shows a man armed with a knife approaching Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz’s home around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, ringing the doorbell before moving into the backyard and banging on a back door. Fresno County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested the man. Court documents show the suspect is ‘angry’ about failed restraining orders against Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto, and a probation officer. Janz said he never had prior personal contact but his office defended the city in the Casto petition. “That is why we believe that he came to my house this weekend, in the middle of the night." The suspect has a long history with the court — 21 felony and misdemeanor convictions dating back to 1988. The charges include elder abuse, sexual assault, and several DUIs. Torrez served jail time for the tear gas possession, released from prison in 2024, according to court records. Records show he is also a registered sex offender, stemming from a 1995 case. A parole report said Torrez’s performance has been “unsatisfactory.” A judge set his bail at $30,000 and issued a protective order for Janz and his family. BREAKING NEWS: A Fresno County judge has ruled that the teenage girl accused of being the getaway driver in the Caleb Quick murder will not be tried as an adult and will instead remain in the juvenile justice system. The 17-year-old is accused of driving the shooter—her boyfriend—away after Quick was shot and killed outside a Clovis McDonald’s in April 2025. Prosecutors argued the seriousness of the crime justified adult charges, but the judge determined they did not prove she couldn’t be rehabilitated as a minor. As a result, if convicted, she would face a much shorter sentence with an emphasis on rehabilitation, rather than the much harsher penalties possible in adult court. The Los Angeles mayor’s race is heating up, with incumbent Karen Bass still leading but facing an unexpected challenge from former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, who has surged into second place. Pratt is running as an outsider candidate, largely fueled by anger over the 2025 Palisades wildfire that destroyed his home. His campaign is now tangled in controversy after ads showed him living in an Airstream trailer on his burned property—only for reports to reveal he’s actually been staying at the upscale Hotel Bel-Air. Pratt insists he hasn’t misled voters, saying he “doesn’t live anywhere” right now because his home is gone and that both the trailer and hotel are temporary solutions. During President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing, China staged a very elaborate, formal welcome ceremony outside the Great Hall of the People—this is standard for high-level state visits, but this one leaned especially grand. Hundreds of Chinese schoolchildren were brought in as part of the ceremony. The kids were cheering, jumping, waving flags, flowers, and in some cases what looked like pom‑pom-style props as Trump and Xi walked past. Would something like this ever happen in America?
