Do you feel like you're emotionally frozen this month? Are the endless Michigan gray days weighing on you? Or maybe your misgivings about true love, success and renewal are coming out again. Whatever the gloomy feeling, it means it's probably time to put on Frontier Ruckus' On the Northline (released in Feb. 2024). Today, we're revisiting the in-studio conversation and performance with Michigan’s own Frontier Ruckus. Matthew Milia, lead vocalist, says the key to art is making it specific. "It's seen in the best literature in filmmaking," Milia said. "Like the more specific you can be, somehow people out there can do their own like interior translation, and it actually makes the universal amplified within those specifics." The band isn't always in a hurry to release more albums. That's because they see themselves as friends first. But, as Milia points out, their albums provide both a light into their lives at the time and the music industry of the time. "[The music industry has] unrecognizably changed, especially post-pandemic," Milia said. "But, like looking back at every record, it came out in a different music industry climate." GUESTS: Matthew Milia, lead vocals and multi-instrumentalist David W. Jones, banjo player and vocals Zachary Nichols, multi-instrumentalist Looking for more conversations from Stateside? Today singer-songwriter and Frontier Ruckus frontman Matthew Milia joins me to celebrate Paul and Linda McCartney's 1971 masterpiece RAM. We talk about the freedoms and pressures on Paul as an artist in the wake of the Beatles breakup, his philosophy of 'don't fix the mistake, explore the accident', the darkness in some of the lyrics, the derangement of Monkberry Moon Delight, reclaiming the mantle of the avant garde from John Lennon, Linda's contributions as a producer and vocalist, the influence of the production on modern indie music and more.

Band Bio:By Light We Loom, a husband and wife indie-pop duo out of Cleveland, Ohio, combines creative beats, vintage synths, soaring vocals, and intimate harmonies with story-folk songwriting sensibilities to deliver high-energy performances that promise to move your heart and feet in equal measures. Since its origin in late 2014, By Light We Loom has toured heavily with highlight stops at MidPoint Music Festival, Brite Winter Festival, NEO Cycle Music Festival, The Heights Music Hop, and opening for notable indie acts: The Paper Kites, Car Seat Headrest, Maps & Atlases, Telekinesis, Lucy Dakus, Sondre Lerche, Deep Sea Diver, The Mynabirds, Twin Forks, The Kin, Kopecky, Radiation City, Matt Pond PA, Frontier Ruckus, and more. Maturing their sound through live performances, they quickly released a more realized EP, “Caught in the Tide,” in January of 2016. “Caught in the Tide” received nationwide radio play, landing the album in the Top 100 of the College Radio Charts. The success of this album resulted in By Light We Loom being named Cleveland Magazine's “Best Indie Rock Artist of 2016” . Songs from “Caught in the Tide” were also featured in episodes of PBS's “Roadtrip Nation” in 2017 and 2018. They followed up this release with an intimate four-song EP "Canopy" that pays tribute to Eric's father who passed suddenly the year prior. Most recently, By Light We Loom's original music was featured in the award winning film "The Enormity of Life." Eric and Shanna are currently working hard on a new release due out in October of this year. On today's episode I talk to musician Anna Burch. Originally from St. Joseph, Michigan, Anna began touring with her band Frontier Ruckus at the age of 18, and eventually went on to play in the Ann Arbor-based Failed Flowers. But it wasn't until she was almost 30 that she started to write and record her own music. Her first album as herself, Quit the Curse, was released by Polyvinyl in 2018, and her latest If You’re Dreaming, was just released at the beginning of April. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
After more than 10 years as a member of bands like Frontier Ruckus and Failed Flowers, Anna Burch made her solo debut with this year's Quit The Curse. The album channels smart, jangly indie-pop while cataloging the in and outs of romantic entanglements. Burch and her band play the songs "Quit the Curse," "2 Cool 2 Care" and "Asking 4 a Friend." Recorded on June 20, 2018 at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. Engineered by KE Luther and Andy Coco.
Tentokrát zcela opustíme témata typu zločin a trest, nebe a peklo a zbraně všeho druhu a budeme se věnovat hlavně duševním stavům pro jaro typickým, tedy hlavně nejrůznějším milostným vzplanutím. Z předměstí Detroitu do výšin pop music nás zavedou Frontier Ruckus, Noah Gundersen nás přesvědčí o tom, že i mezi Vikingy se najdou jemné a citlivé duše a Woods Brothers zahrají své abstraktní country blues.

This first Ann Arbor Stories walking tour is intended to be listened to while actually exploring a few city blocks in downtown Ann Arbor. It takes listeners from the corner of Huron and Fourth, outside the Embassy Hotel all the way to the corner of Liberty and Ashley and the C. Walker Building. There’s no right or wrong way to experience this story. Ideally, you’ll stroll along the same streets we’re talking about, looking at the same buildings we’re describing and letting your mind wander back in time. But you could still listen to this in your car or at home and check these sites out in person later. Use Google street view. We're not telling you how to consume your media. Music by Frontier Ruckus. Listener warning: This episode contains references to sex, pornography, murder, riots, death, ghosts, gay bars and bankers. For those of you who want to experience this podcast at ground level, a few tips: First, if you’re not standing at the corner of Huron and Fourth Street, then get there before you start the episode. This walking tour will take you from this point to the corner of Liberty and Ashley. It’s not a long walk, but you will have to cross some streets and some of the sidewalks might be busy so please please please keep your head up and be aware of your surroundings, as tempting as it may be to submit fully to my words and the siren of history. It’s often easier to see some of the taller buildings from the opposite side of the street, but it’s up to you on how you want to do this. Get up close to the building and touch the old brick, or step back and peer up into the sky. Maybe both. But watch out for cars and people - we're serious, we don’t want anyone getting hurt. One last thing. If it’s the summer of 2017 and you’re playing the AADL Summer Game, three of the locations on this walking tour have signs in the window that get into the history of those spots and have special game codes that can be inputted at play.aadl.org for points. Visit the AADL website and search for Ann Arbor Stories for more details. Go at your own pace. Pause, rewind, stop halfway through for a drink at a famous establishment. This is your walking tour, not ours. Enjoy.
