Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Ken Coomer joins me on the podcast today. Ken is a fantastic drummer, producer, and studio owner, as well as one of the few musicians I know that is actually from Nashville! Ken is well-known as the original drummer for Wilco, as well as the last for Uncle Tupelo, bands that literally defined the alt-country genre in the mid-90's. But before that, Ken came up in the punk and alternative rock scene here in Nashville with his band Clockhammer, and since leaving Wilco in 2002, he has had an incredible career as a studio drummer and producer, operating most recently out of his studio just a few blocks away from me in East Nashville called Cartoon Moon Recording. Ken was heavily involved in the recording of Uncle Tupelo's classic “Anodyne”, as well as the Wilco albums “FM”, “Being There”, “Summerteeth”, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” and the “Mermaid Avenue” projects with Wilco and Billy Bragg. After his run with Wilco, Ken returned to Nashville to try his hand at session work and producing. He's played with and recorded on albums for Steve Earle, Will Hoge, Al Green, Tim Finn, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and many more. He's also had an incredible run producing some huge Spanish artists, which is an intriguing left-turn that his more recent career has taken, with artists like Chetes, and AppleTree - albums that were huge in Mexico and Columbia. It was great to have Ken drop in to speak about all of this amazing history. Where is TIm Finn today? What's the relationship between Tim Finn and Neil Finn? Who did Tim FInn replace in Fleetwood Mac? Answers to all of these questions and more: Tim Finn is renowned for his work with Split Enz, Crowded House, and as a solo artist. His musical journey began in New Zealand, where he developed a passion for music at a young age, inspired by the Beatles and other rock legends. Finn's early years were marked by a relentless pursuit of creativity and a drive to innovate within the music scene. In 1972, Tim Finn co-founded Split Enz with Phil Judd. The band's early days were characterised by their eclectic and theatrical style, which combined elements of art rock, progressive rock, and new wave. Split Enz quickly gained a reputation for their eccentric performances and unique sound, setting them apart in the music industry. Their breakthrough came with the release of "True Colours" in 1980, featuring the hit single "I Got You." This song catapulted them to international fame, topping charts in Australia and New Zealand and gaining significant airplay worldwide. Split Enz continued to enjoy success with several albums that included hits like "One Step Ahead" and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat." Tim Finn's vocals and innovative songwriting were central to the band's success, helping to establish Split Enz as pioneers in the New Zealand music scene. In the mid-80s, Tim joined his brother Neil Finn in Crowded House. He initially contributed to the band's second album which featured tracks like "Into Temptation" and "I Feel Possessed." Tim's involvement added depth to the band's sound, blending his creative prowess with Neil's to produce a series of compelling and emotionally resonant songs. Although his tenure with Crowded House was brief, it was marked by a creative synergy that significantly influenced the band's music. Tim's solo career began in earnest with the release of "Escapade" in 1983. The album was a commercial success, featuring hits like "Fraction Too Much Friction." His solo work allowed him to explore different musical styles and lyrical themes and subsequent albums continued to highlight his innovative approach to music and songwriting. In addition to his solo albums, Tim Finn released "The View Is Worth The Climb" in 2011. His solo work has been characterised by a blend of pop, rock, and folk influences, reflecting his diverse musical background and enduring creative spirit. Tim Finn's collaborative efforts have also been a significant part of his career. He has worked with a range of artists, including Phil Manzanera, https://manzanera.com/new/Eddie Rayner, and Bic Runga. These collaborations have allowed him to explore different musical landscapes and experiment with new sounds, enriching his already diverse body of work. The Finn Brothers project, a collaboration with his brother Neil, resulted in the release of two acclaimed albums. These showcased the brothers' close musical relationship and their ability to create deeply personal and resonant songs. Tracks like "Only Talking Sense" and "Won't Give In" highlighted their unique chemistry and songwriting prowess. Throughout his career, Tim Finn has been recognised for his melodic craftsmanship and lyrical depth. His contributions to music, both as a solo artist and as part of iconic bands like Split Enz and Crowded House, have left an indelible mark on the industry. Finn's ability to blend introspective lyrics with diverse musical styles has inspired generations of musicians and continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Phil Manzanera is one of the UK's best-known musicians and record producers, having shot to prominence in the early ‘70's as the lead guitarist with the seminal band, Roxy Music. He is widely acknowledged as one of the world's leading guitarists and remains in huge demand.  Roxy Music were inducted into  the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 and recently Phil was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to music. He was born to a British father and Colombian mother and has collaborated with musicians from South and Latin America, South Africa, Cuba and continental Europe. His recent album releases  include The Liberation Project: Songs That Made us Free,  Corroncho 2 and Live in Japan as well as The Ghost from Santiago that he did with Split Enz's Tim Finn. He also took part in ‘Sunshine of Your Love' a tribute concert to his friend, Jack Bruce. Phil's musical influence stretches far and wide, but even he was taken by surprise when his guitar riff from 1978's K-Scope was sampled by Jay Z and Kanye West and became the Grammy winning smash hit ‘No Church in the Wild' the first track on their multi-million selling album, ‘Watch The Throne'. At 73, Phil is now in his fourth decade as a professional musician.  He joined Roxy Music in 1972, aged 21,  as lead guitarist. During the next 12 years, until 1983 when the band members went on a ‘long break', Roxy Music released a series of international best selling albums, achieving ten UK top ten albums and touring extensively throughout the world. The 18 year hiatus ended in 2001 with a critically acclaimed, sellout 52-date world tour featuring Bryan Ferry, Andy MacKay and Paul Thompson. The world rediscovered Roxy Music. In the summer of 2003 Roxy again played in the US and Europe. 2010 saw Roxy Music thrilling fans at Festivals in the UK, Europe and Japan, which was followed by a Winter UK tour, and dates in Australia and New Zealand.  As a writer, producer and solo artist, Phil Manzanera has worked with many of the luminaries of modern music, such as Steve Winwood, David Gilmour, John Cale, Godley and Creme, Nico (Velvet Underground) and John Wetton (King Crimson, Asia). Phil Manzanera – who thought “every day in the band felt like Christmas” – has just published his memoir, Revolución to Roxy, and talked to us about it in front of a rammed and captivated audience at London's 21Soho, an evening so full of detail, intrigue and revelation we're putting it out as two podcasts. This is the second. He lifts the bonnet of the Roxy Music “art collective” in its various line-ups and shows you how the engine worked and why the idea of Eno onstage was “frightening”. He remembers working with a whole range of people – David Gilmour, Robert Wyatt, Heroes De Silencia, Quiet Sun, 801, David Bowie, Keith Richards, Jack Bruce and Tim Finn among them. He talks about the five seconds of guitar he knocked off in 1975 that's made him “more money than all my Roxy earnings put together”. He reflects – and very poignantly – that bands never talk to each other and how he hopes the other members read his memoir as they'll discover things about him they never knew. And he tells the fantastic story of the Guitar Legends festival in Seville and the way he managed Bob Dylan.   And you can order a copy of ‘Revolución to Roxy' here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Revoluci%C3%B3n-Roxy-Phil-Manzanera/dp/1783242817Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early - and ad-free - access to all of our content: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. This is the second. He lifts the bonnet of the Roxy Music “art collective” in its various line-ups and shows you how the engine worked and why the idea of Eno onstage was “frightening”. Tim Finn was born in  New Zealand.  In 1971 he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Auckland. It is there that he met Mike Chunn, Robert Gillies, Philip Judd and Noel Crombie. Phil and Tim formed a band called Split Ends, which became Split Enz before they started to tour Australia. Finn recorded his first solo album, Escapade, in 1983. This album was very successful in Australia and New Zealand,  he then decided to leave Split Enz in 1984.   In early 1985, Tim moved to London.  He  wrote some music for movies, and acted in a few movies. His role in The Coca-Cola Kid was about five minutes long. He had a bigger role in the movie La Donna della Luna (The Moon Woman). In late 1989, he went to live in Melbourne. He recorded his third album, Tim Finn. In early 1990 he joined Crowded House, the group Neil had formed after Split Enz split up. The band recorded Woodface with him. He left Crowded House after the album. Because of their success, Tim Finn and Neil Finn were made OBE for services to New Zealand music in the 1993 Queen's Birthday Honours List. The album Finn was released in 1995. This was an album made by Neil and Tim as the Finn Brothers. Also in 1995, Finn worked with singers Andy White and Liam Ó Maonlaí. They formed the band ALT. They released the album Altitude, and more recently collaborated with Andy White to release New Single 'The Happiness Index'.

He and Eddie are at it again as Forenzics and have just released a new album called Shades and Echoes that is one of the best things either of them has done. Tim and I discuss this fantastic new project, his other incredible more recent work, and we hear stories from the past as well. He's a legend and better now than ever before, we're lucky to hear from him. www.facebook.com/TimFinnOfficial  www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
