We NEED Disabled Actors In Disabled Roles! - Film Director Rick Stanton

Play Episode Listen Later May 13, 2025 38:41

Brooke talks to film director Rick Stanton about his film "Spectrum," which he wrote and directed. The film offers a unique portrayal of autism through the lens of his brother, who plays the lead character. Rick discusses the creative process behind the film, including the decision to cast authentically and the artistic choices that contribute to its raw, realistic feel. He emphasises the importance of showcasing the everyday struggles faced by individuals with disabilities, moving away from the often cutesy representations seen in mainstream media. The episode also looks into the film's themes of worth and opportunity, as well as the impact of genuine storytelling on audiences. KEY TAKEAWAYS "Spectrum" aims to portray the life of an adult with autism authentically, challenging the common, often cutesy or childlike depictions seen in media. The lead character is played by the director's brother, who has autism, to ensure a genuine representation. The film is shot in black and white and in a 4:3 aspect ratio to reflect the lead character's limited worldview. This artistic choice enhances the viewer's connection to the character's experiences and emotions. The narrative is inspired by real-life events, including a traumatic incident the director experienced. This personal connection adds depth and authenticity to the story, allowing for a more relatable exploration of autism. The film features authentically cast actors with disabilities, which contributes to the film's realism. The casting process involved leveraging the strengths of the actors, allowing for natural performances that resonate with the audience. The film emphasises the worth of individuals with disabilities and critiques societal dismissiveness. It aims to inspire viewers to reflect on their perceptions and interactions with people on the autism spectrum, encouraging a more empathetic understanding of their experiences. BEST MOMENTS "In the film, the film basically delves into what life is like for an adult with autism." "We wanted to depict how my brother's life actually is, where he's just like everybody else and has the same emotional range and troubles." "Sometimes people with disabilities can just be sort of disregarded before they've even had a chance." "On paper, it's extremely boring... but that's the scene that seems to resonate the most with the autistic community." "It was important to us to never sort of bang on about disability." Getting "Lazy Disabled People" Into Work - Analysing The PIP Reforms

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 29, 2025 44:57

In this episode of "Disabled and Proud," Brooke talks with Scott Whitney in a thought-provoking discussion about the recent reforms to Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and universal credit in the UK. He highlights the misconceptions surrounding disability benefits, particularly the unfounded belief in widespread fraud, and emphasises the importance of PIP as a means to maintain independence rather than merely an out-of-work benefit. The conversation delves into the challenges faced by disabled individuals in navigating the assessment process, the potential dangers of tightening benefit structures, and the urgent need for businesses to adapt their hiring practices to be more inclusive. Scott also shares insights from his own journey as a disabled person and discusses the initiatives of his organisation, All4Inclusion, which aims to reduce loneliness within the disability community by fostering safe spaces for open conversations. The episode concludes with a powerful reminder that being proud of one's disability should translate into action and advocacy for change. KEY TAKEAWAYS PIP Reforms and Misconceptions : The discussion highlights the misconception that Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is often fraudulently claimed. Research indicates that only 0.04% of all benefit fraud is related to disability benefits, suggesting that the focus on tightening PIP is misguided. Importance of Training for Assessors : Many decisions regarding PIP claims are made by individuals without adequate medical training. This can lead to incorrect assessments, as seen in personal experiences where medical evidence was overlooked. PIP as a Means of Independence : PIP is not an out-of-work benefit; rather, it is designed to help individuals maintain their independence, whether they are working or not. The removal of such support could lead to severe consequences for those who rely on it for daily living. Impact of Reforms on Vulnerable Populations : The potential reforms could disproportionately affect individuals with invisible disabilities, such as mental health conditions, who may struggle to prove their need for support. This could lead to increased poverty and destitution among disabled individuals. Community and Activism : There is a call for collective action, emphasizing the need for both disabled and non-disabled allies to advocate for the rights of disabled individuals. Engaging in conversations, writing to MPs, and participating in protests are essential steps to address the challenges faced by the disabled community. BEST MOMENTS "The only way we're going to get disabled people into work is by training, supporting businesses to go, well, actually, this is how we need to interview people." - Scott "PIP isn't an out-of-work benefit; it's something that people use to allow them to go to work." - Scott "The ultimate danger is that people die... it would be because people... wouldn't be able to eat, my diet would be worse." - Scott "Hundreds of thousands more women than men will end up going into poverty and out of the workforce." - Interviewer "If we're proud, what are we doing about it? It's time... to do actions, not words." - Scott VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. How I Helped Broadcast The Paralympics! - with Jordan Jarret-Bryant

Brooke is joined by special guest, Jordan Jarrett-Bryant, to discuss the exhilarating yet exhausting experience of covering live events, the challenges of staying updated in a fast-paced environment, and the importance of storytelling in sports journalism. Together they focus on the evolving landscape of media, highlighting how digital platforms have transformed audience engagement and representation in broadcasting. Jordan shares his most memorable moments from the Paralympics, including exclusive interviews and inspiring athlete stories, while also addressing the pressing issues of accessibility and disability rights in Paris. KEY TAKEAWAYS There has been a significant shift from traditional television to digital platforms, with audiences increasingly favouring services like Netflix, YouTube, and Apple TV. This change is driven by the demand for diverse content and the ability to watch what they want, when they want. The recent Paralympics highlighted both the excitement of sports and the ongoing challenges faced by disabled individuals, particularly regarding accessibility in host cities like Paris. Despite the celebration of athletic achievements, there are serious concerns about the lack of infrastructure for disabled people. Broadcasting during the Paralympics requires extensive preparation, but the ability to adapt to unexpected developments is crucial. Journalists must be ready to pivot quickly based on real-time events and emerging stories. The rise of digital media has democratised content creation, allowing individuals to share their stories without needing traditional media gatekeepers. However, this has also led to an influx of content that may lack substance, highlighting the need for quality and expertise in media production. BEST MOMENTS "TV has had to and it's TV's biggest fault, in my opinion. They were so complacent for so long and their refusal to diversify... has meant now that they've been overtaken by digital." "For me, it's the perfect kind of smudge of sports, disability and media." "I think the biggest difference I've seen is digital and what digital has allowed people to do is to watch what they want from who they want, when they want, how they want." "The audience is saying, we want more women. We want more black people. We want more disabled people... If you don't give it to us, that's fine. We'll go Netflix. We'll go YouTube." Brooke meets special guests Liselle Terrett and Heather Johnson to engage in a vibrant discussion about their groundbreaking project, "Not F**king Sorry" a provocative cabaret theatre piece that challenges societal norms surrounding disability and queerness. They explore the fluidity of identity, the importance of creating safe spaces for marginalised voices, and the collaborative process of developing the show with learning-disabled and neurodivergent actors. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone may experience disability at some point in their lives. This intersectionality is central to the themes explored in the project. The creation of the performance "Not Fucking Sorry" is a collaborative effort involving learning disabled and neurodivergent actors. The process includes devising, improvisation, and the incorporation of the actors' personal experiences and voices into the narrative. The show aims to confront and challenge societal norms surrounding disability and sexuality. It seeks to address the marginalisation of disabled individuals and the misconceptions surrounding their sexual agency, using humour and provocative content to engage the audience. Establishing a safe and respectful environment in the rehearsal room is crucial for the creative process. This includes clear communication, support for mental health, and a focus on care, allowing actors to express themselves freely and authentically. BEST MOMENTS "Disability is sexy. Queer is sexy. It's fluid. It's movable. We'll all be disabled at some point." "You're there to make sure that the actors can do their best jobs." "We never get the chance to go out to the pub, to the club. So let's make a show that we create that." "The political message is more urgent... the world is... lacking in pathos or nuance." The Anti-Ableism Manifesto - Interview With Tiffany Yu

Brooke holds an empowering conversation with Tiffany Yu, author of the "Anti-Ableism Manifesto" exploring the evolving language around disability, the personal journeys of disabled individuals, and the importance of community and representation. Tiffany shares her experiences of navigating life with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities, reflecting on her childhood before and after her accident. They also delve into the significance of access intimacy, the challenges of identifying as disabled, and the systemic issues surrounding ableism. KEY TAKEAWAYS The experiences of disabled individuals vary widely, influenced by factors such as whether they were born with a disability or acquired it later in life. This diversity emphasises that the disabled community is not a monolith and that each person's relationship with their disability is unique. Language surrounding disability is evolving, and it's important to use terms that accurately reflect individuals' experiences. For example, "non-apparent" disabilities are preferred over "hidden" or "invisible" to avoid implying that individuals are trying to hide their disabilities. The concept of access intimacy refers to the comfort and understanding that comes from being in spaces designed with disabled individuals in mind. This fosters a sense of belonging and allows for more authentic interactions without the need for individuals to justify their access needs. The book "Anti-Ableism Manifesto" is structured around the framework of "Me, We, Us," which encourages individuals to first reflect on their own beliefs about disability (Me), then engage with their community (We), and finally advocate for broader societal change (Us). This approach emphasises the importance of both personal and collective action in combating ableism. BEST MOMENTS "I identify as having both apparent and non-apparent disabilities." "I think we are on the cusp of a cultural shift around disability." "Ableism is a system of oppression that devalues someone based on the way their body and or mind works." "Just because you've met one disabled person doesn't mean that you've met the entire disabled community." "I wanted the book to read as though a friend was talking to you." Rugby with a Twist: The Unique Experience of Playing Visually Impaired Rugby

Brooke welcomes Aaron Fowler, a visually impaired rugby player and physio, for an engaging conversation about his journey in the world of VI rugby. Aaron shares his experiences with retinitis pigmentosa, discussing the challenges of growing up with sight loss and the importance of community support. The episode delves into the unique adaptations of visually impaired rugby, including the use of an audible ball and modified rules, as well as the camaraderie and inclusivity within the sport.  KEY TAKEAWAYS VI rugby, or visually impaired rugby, is played with adaptations such as a ball that makes noise and a touch-based tackling system. The game is played seven-a-side, with two halves of 10 minutes each, and includes a classification system for players based on their level of visual impairment. Aaron was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of five. His journey included learning to use a white cane at 17 and later getting a guide dog, which significantly impacted his independence and mobility. The rugby community is described as inclusive and supportive, with Aaron emphasising the importance of camaraderie among players. He also highlighted the need for better education and awareness about disabilities in society. Participation in visually impaired sports often requires significant travel and personal funding, as there is limited financial support available. Teams often rely on fundraising efforts to cover travel costs for competitions. VI rugby is expanding internationally, with teams in several countries including England, Japan, and Ireland. Upcoming tournaments, such as the one in November, aim to showcase the sport and attract more players and spectators, with hopes of increasing participation, especially among women. BEST MOMENTS "I think when you have a disability, you either go one of two ways. Either you get really frustrated and bitter about things, or you just kind of have to accept that this is how the world currently is."  "I was about 12 when my parents told me the extent to which my sight loss could develop into one day. It was a lot to process."  "I think there's still a lot to be done to educate society about people with various disabilities."  "This will be the first time we've had an international tournament in England, and it will be a great opportunity for us to showcase our sport."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Disability in The US vs UK - Where is Better?

Brooke reconnects with former guest, Jess for a heartfelt conversation about the evolving landscape of disability pride in the UK and the US. Jess shares her personal journey of moving from London to Chicago, navigating a divorce, and re-entering the dating scene as a disabled woman. The duo explores the stark differences in societal attitudes towards disability in both countries, touching on the impact of media representation and accessibility. They delve into the challenges of dating, particularly the unique experiences faced by disabled individuals, and emphasise the importance of self-love and setting boundaries.  KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a notable difference in how disability is perceived and represented in the UK versus the US. While the US has made strides in accessibility through legislation like the ADA, the general attitude towards disability often leans towards a "fix it" mindset, whereas the UK tends to have a more accepting and integrated view of disability in everyday life. Personal life changes, such as going through a divorce, can significantly alter one's perspective on disability and self-identity. The journey of navigating dating and relationships post-divorce has led to a deeper understanding of self-worth and the importance of setting boundaries. The experience of dating apps varies greatly between the US and the UK. Being upfront about disabilities can serve as a filter, helping to attract more understanding partners.  The high prices of medications in the US, compared to the more accessible NHS in the UK, create significant barriers for disabled individuals, often forcing them to ration their medications. Taking up space and claiming one's identity as a disabled person is crucial for self-empowerment.  BEST MOMENTS "Disability Pride really began in the U.S. ... but it's not. Disability is very much seen in the U.S. as something that still needs to be overcome."  "It's okay to take up space. ... You should take it up as loudly and as proudly as possible."  "The dating scene is hell right now. Let's not mince words because it is." Brooke talks with Nana, who shares his unique perspective on living with a disability. Nana discusses his childhood experiences, including the moment he learned about his tracheostomy and how it shaped his understanding of himself. The conversation delves into the challenges of navigating school systems that often lack proper support for disabled students, as well as the impact of societal perceptions on career choices. Nana emphasises the importance of resilience and self-advocacy, encouraging listeners to ask questions and challenge uncomfortable norms.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Disability is viewed as a unique entity rather than a limitation. This perspective emphasises the importance of individual experiences and how one chooses to define their own identity. Growing up with a disability can lead to feelings of confusion and disconnect, especially when parents do not openly discuss the nature of the disability. Understanding one's condition can take time, often not fully realised until adolescence. The educational system often lacks adequate support for students with disabilities. There can be significant gaps in understanding and resources, leading to periods of exclusion from school and a lack of tailored support. Career paths can be influenced by one's disability, with many individuals gravitating towards roles that allow them to help others. Personal experiences can foster a desire to advocate for disabled individuals in the workforce. BEST MOMENTS "I think if I was to be in that era again, I would be very forthcoming and wanting to know why am I like this?"  "I don't allow someone's negativity towards how I look or how I sound to determine how I walk through life."  "I think now, because the buzzword of EDI is being flung around, we're being put in a position where, okay, we have to take this box."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Brooke sits down with Terri, a passionate advocate for disability representation and the founder of a charity focused on supporting individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Terri shares her journey of navigating life with an invisible disability, discussing the challenges of obtaining a diagnosis and the misconceptions surrounding disabilities. The conversation highlights the importance of community, representation, and the power of embracing one's disability as a catalyst for personal growth and change.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Embracing disability can lead to personal growth and new opportunities, such as becoming an author or starting a consultancy, which may not have been pursued otherwise. There is a significant lack of diverse representation in the disability community, particularly for people of colour. Creating visibility for different experiences is crucial for fostering inclusivity. The journey to diagnosis can be fraught with challenges, including medical misogyny and delays in receiving information. Personal experiences highlight the need for better communication and understanding within the healthcare system. Establishing a charity that connects individuals with similar disabilities fosters a sense of belonging and reduces feelings of isolation. Events and experiences can help individuals engage socially and feel supported. Developing patience is essential when dealing with medical professionals and navigating the complexities of disability. Embracing one's journey and focusing on helping others can provide purpose and strength. BEST MOMENTS "I feel like it's almost pushed me to do things that I might not have done if I was quote unquote well."  "I didn't want to stay in a space where I was unhappy and it was causing me more stress."  "I feel like people also forget that I have the same diagnosis that the charity is based around."  "You can't choose how people feel towards a situation."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Brooke talks to Ahbid Choudry, a passionate advocate for disability rights and the founder of Cabability, a service dedicated to providing wheelchair-accessible transportation. Ahbid shares his personal journey of living with a disability, emphasising the importance of dignity over equality and the need for compassion in the treatment of disabled individuals. He reflects on his challenging childhood, the misdiagnoses he faced, and how these experiences shaped his perspective on life and work. The discussion delves into the significance of education, the power of acceptance, and the three key steps to achieving personal goals: taking ownership of one's life, recognising individual abilities, and striving for achievement.  KEY TAKEAWAYS True respect and acknowledgment comes from recognising and maintaining a person's dignity rather than merely treating them as equals. The journey of living with a disability from childhood through adulthood has shaped the understanding of challenges faced. Acceptance of one's disability is crucial for personal growth and empowerment. The creation of Cabability stemmed from personal experiences with inaccessible transportation. The focus on compassion and understanding the specific needs of disabled individuals is central to providing effective services. Education is highlighted as a vital tool for personal development. Learning and understanding one's abilities can lead to greater achievements and a more fulfilling life. BEST MOMENTS "I am disabled, but I don't feel disabled... I don't have the time to dwell on my disability because I'm working and trying to provide for myself and my family." "It's not equality that we need as disabled people. Equality is just a big word that sounds good. As a person with a disability, I want dignity." "When you put your life in the hands of facilitators, you lose ownership. Self-love and self-acceptance are key to overcoming societal judgments and embracing one's uniqueness. BEST MOMENTS "I'd say I'm the same as anyone else, right? We all are. But obviously the society or the people that ask the judgment and comments make you feel that you're different" "I feel like it's very important that the amazing work we continue to give, for example, video podcasts, you're giving back to the community, you're raising more and more awareness, you're talking about these subjects, you're breaking that society norms. It's very important" "I absolutely love my vitiligo. And on that initiative, we've started an initiative called Vitiligo Allies. And Vitiligo Allies is all about raising awareness, creating support groups, meet-ups, events, partnering with pharmaceutical companies, clinics."  "It's a big thing to put yourself out there and to do that and embrace your differences and accept your differences and I think that's really brilliant." Brooke welcomes Kirsty and Xander from Our Chaotic Adventure, a couple who met while playing wheelchair basketball. They talk about their personal experiences with disability, including Kirsty's journey from childhood with a disability to becoming an amputee, and Xander's sudden spinal injury that led to paralysis. They discuss their perspectives on disability, the medicalisation of disabilities, and the importance of representation in the medical field. Xander, a medical student, shares his efforts to advocate for disability inclusion in medical education. The couple also reflects on their relationship, long-distance challenges, and their upcoming wedding.  KEY TAKEAWAYS It's vital to have disabled individuals in the medical field to provide a holistic view of care and treatment. Overcoming societal perceptions and ignorance about disabilities is key, especially in professions like medicine. Embrace disability and push boundaries to achieve personal and professional goals. We must better advocate for a shift towards a more inclusive and less medicalised approach to disability. We should always push to demonstrate that disabilities should not limit one's aspirations or capabilities, but rather open up new possibilities and perspectives. BEST MOMENTS "I see disabled people now and I'm like, come on, just do it. I would definitely not give sound medical advice to a disabled person. Buy the book, don't do that." "I think it's opened up a lot of different avenues that I didn't expect in different sports. And also as well, I've just actually heard today that I received a place on a master's program for physiotherapy." "I think it's one of those things that actually it's really important to prove that. So that's why I'm quite amped about trying to improve that. Because I think it's an awesome job and I want more disabled people to do it." She highlights the importance of trusting one's intuition and seeking answers when dealing with a chronic illness. The conversation also delves into the impact of Pippa's diagnosis on her life, from being a dancer to transitioning to a writer. Pippa also touches on the unsolicited advice and bizarre questions she receives in public about her disability, emphasising the need for understanding and respect.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite challenges, Pippa expresses gratitude for her abilities and newfound ambition, driven by her chronic illness experience. We often receive unsolicited advice and questions about our disabilities, emphasising the need for better understanding and respect. Through blogging and writing a book, Pippa finds a platform to share her experiences and advocate for those with chronic illnesses. There is a level of absurdity of ableism in society, which requires listening and understanding rather than offering unsolicited advice. BEST MOMENTS "I tailor my answer depending on who's asking a lot of the time, but in a nutshell I say I have a chronic illness called ME."  "I think the fact that people see a younger wheelchair user, and I'm also aware that I look a lot younger than I actually am, I think people have this desire to help but don't realise that their interpretation of helping just makes things so much worse." "I'm more ambitious now, even though I have so much less usable energy per day, I feel as though I've got a stronger desire to do what I can and figure out what I can do with that level of ambition."  "I do think it's important not to do things purely for other people because I've fallen into that trap in the past but if you're able to do something that fulfils you on a personal level but It also provides support or entertainment or just something of substance for other people." Journey to Self-Acceptance: Reflections on Disability Pride

Brooke takes a solo approach to highlight the powerful messages shared by the audience about Disability Pride Month. Through reading and discussing four standout responses, she delves into the importance of embracing disability pride, breaking societal molds, promoting visibility, and advocating for representation in various spheres of life.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Disability pride is an antidote for internalised ableism and a way to combat societal biases and expectations towards disabled individuals. It is important to raise awareness, promote visibility, and ensure representation of disabled people in leadership roles to inspire younger generations and break stereotypes. Disability pride is a journey that involves self-acceptance, resilience, and embracing one's authentic self, even in the face of societal challenges. Celebrating diversity and showcasing the talents and achievements of disabled individuals helps challenge preconceived notions and promotes inclusivity. By sharing lived experiences, advocating for change, and believing in oneself, disabled individuals can pave the way for a more inclusive and accepting society. BEST MOMENTS "Disability pride is almost the... the cure is not the right word, because I don't like the word cure, but I think it's the thing that really tackles ableism the most, is being able to have pride in who you are as a disabled person."  "Without disability, there's no ingenuity."  "Disability pride is about breaking out of the box so that we can fit to us."  "Disability pride offers me the chance to reflect on my self-acceptance journey over the years." Brooke welcomes special guests Nick and Isaac, to discuss the concept of Disability Pride and share their personal journeys towards embracing their disabilities. They emphasise the importance of authenticity and being true to oneself, highlighting the power of sharing personal stories and experiences. They also reflect on the impact of being open and honest about their disabilities, both online and in their daily lives, expressing their hopes for future Disability Pride Months, advocating for a more inclusive and supportive society that values and respects individuals with disabilities.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Disability pride is about being authentic and true to oneself, embracing one's identity and sharing the realities of living with a disability. Sharing personal stories and experiences can have a profound impact on others, creating connections and fostering understanding within the community. Embracing disability pride involves accepting oneself, making adaptations, and being open and honest about one's journey. The future of Disability Pride Month should involve a movement that goes beyond a tick box exercise, with corporations and organizations actively supporting accessibility and inclusion. Advocating for a dedicated senior disabilities minister and government commitment to supporting people with disabilities is crucial for progress and recognition within society. BEST MOMENTS "Be you. Find out who you are, what you are. Accept the fact that you need to adapt, figure out who you are, who you want to be, who you want people to see you be, and focus on being you." "I would love to see a disability pride march around the world. People being out and going through the streets of London or wherever, just being themselves and showing the world, 'Yeah, we're here.'" "I would like to see Disability Pride Month become an actual movement and a whole celebration. For it to be done not just by people with disabilities or disability charities, but for other businesses and organisations to get involved." "I think it's being your authentic self. People can tell when you are not being you, when you're trying overly hard. Sometimes those kinds of things of not being trying to be overly polished and just being me means more." This week, Brooke welcomes Jamie and Celia on Disabled and Proud's Disability Pride Month special. They discuss their personal experiences with disability pride, unlearning ableism, and the challenges faced by the disabled community. Jamie shares a journey of overcoming internalised ableism and finding empowerment through meaningful employment, while Celia emphasises the importance of corporate responsibility in promoting disability inclusion. They highlight the need for tangible action, accountability, and ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive society.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Disability Pride is about change, hope, and amplifying diverse voices to celebrate the diversity of disability experiences. Disability Pride is not about enjoying being disabled but accepting oneself and being proud of the community's strengths and achievements. Unlearning ableism promotes inclusivity by addressing the impact of ableism on individuals and providing tools to navigate and challenge it. Overcoming disability is not a realistic goal, as disability is a part of one's identity and should be accepted rather than overcome. Corporate responsibility during Disability Pride Month should focus on tangible actions, such as running anti-ableism audits, supporting communities, and investing in disability inclusion beyond tokenism. BEST MOMENTS "Disability pride is about celebrating the work that's going on. So actually, I'm not celebrating Pride to the fullest, not because of my own fault, but because again, society isn't taking it on board." "I think for me that is the pride because I think if I didn't get into this role, I probably wouldn't be sitting here today. Like I probably would have out alive myself a long time ago." "It's not my accountability and responsibility. It's your burden of accountability and responsibility. And I think the natural tendency to applaud someone halfway through, you know they've done the bare minimum." "It's not about tokenism, flying a flag. Great, it's a starting point. Brooke talks to Emma, the mother of a disabled child, about her experiences and insights. Emma shares her journey from pregnancy to raising her daughter, Dottie, who was born on her due date. She reflects on the challenges of navigating the healthcare system and advocating for Dottie's needs. Emma discusses the importance of authentic representation of disability in media and the power of storytelling. She also touches on the struggles of self-care and the emotional toll of advocating for her daughter in various settings.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Advocating for a disabled child in medical settings can be emotionally challenging, but it is crucial to ensure the child's needs are met and their voice is heard. It involves being confident, determined, and prepared to stand up for what is best for the child. Authentic representation of disability in media and storytelling is essential for empowering individuals and changing societal perceptions. It is important to tell untold stories and showcase the diversity within the disabled community. Balancing self-care with the responsibilities of caring for a disabled child is crucial. Recognising when to take a break, setting boundaries, and surrounding oneself with supportive individuals are key aspects of self-care for a parent carer. Questioning assumptions and biases about disability is important in advocating for a disabled child. It involves resisting harmful tropes, advocating for authentic representation, and challenging conflicting opinions from professionals. BEST MOMENTS "I think when she was first born. For the first sort of five months, we were in and out of hospital a lot. And it wasn't like we were told in that time, oh, she's disabled, or she has this condition, or it was sort of a really weird mix of what's happening, panic, sort of worry." "I've definitely sort of evolved my thinking and perception of disability as a direct result of being Dottie's mum."  "I think it's about having those conversations that you wouldn't necessarily normally have with your friends down the pub. Because actually, they're not going to be the ones that necessarily grow your mindset."  "Sometimes some people aren't able to be saved. That is not a you problem, that is a them problem." Brooke talks to Robert, a neurodivergent individual with dyspraxia and a cancer survivor, discussing his journey and experiences with disabilities. Robert shares insights on the lack of accessibility he faced during his cancer diagnosis and how it influenced his perspective on inclusivity. He delves into his inclusive design consultancy, Inclus, aiming to make consumer products more accessible for social minority groups.  Together they highlight the importance of inclusive design and challenge the stereotypical perceptions of disability. Robert reflects on resilience and the need for a broader understanding of disability beyond visible markers.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Disability is a wide spectrum, and it's important to understand that it's not limited to visible disabilities like wheelchair use. Small incremental changes in design can make products more accessible and inclusive for all individuals, including those with disabilities. Overcoming challenges and finding coping mechanisms can lead to resilience and innovative solutions, even in the face of adversity. Embracing one's unique traits and experiences, regardless of disability, can lead to personal growth and success. It's crucial to have empathy and understanding towards individuals with disabilities, avoiding assumptions and embracing diversity in disability experiences. BEST MOMENTS "I think that's such a poignant snippet and takeaway because it comes back to that well what what does disability look like and actually there is not a one-size-fits-all." "I always found a way to be resilient and always found a way to then show up in a different way, in a way that then made people go, oh, it's quite impressive." She reflects on the impact of her disabilities on her career choices and the process of accepting her authentic disabled self. The conversation delves into the differences in disability perception between the UK and the Netherlands, emphasising the importance of being able to show up as one's full disabled self.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Hannah's journey of showing up as her full disabled self in Amsterdam highlights the importance of embracing authenticity and setting boundaries without feeling the need to conform to societal expectations. Hannah's insight on grief being an ongoing and ever-changing process emphasises the need to accept and live alongside grief rather than trying to overcome it completely. The comparison between the UK and the Netherlands in terms of prescription painkillers showcases the significance of a morally neutral approach to pain relief, allowing for more collaborative and sustainable treatment options. Hannah's experience of living a slower-paced, authentic life in Amsterdam and inspiring her friends to reconsider their own lifestyles highlights the power of leading by example and sparking positive change in others. BEST MOMENTS "There's such a distinct before and now there's the people who knew you before you got sick, the ways you were, the things you did."  "I think the one other thing I want to say about culture, which I think is quite important for people who live with chronic pain, is I find, at least in my experience, there's a much more morally neutral view to prescription painkillers."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. David discusses his childhood surgeries, the impact of his disability on his education, and the challenges he faced in the workplace. He also talks about the creation of Buddies For All, a social isolation tackling initiative born out of the pandemic.  KEY TAKEAWAYS David created a platform called Buddies For All to tackle social isolation among disabled individuals, providing opportunities for social and leisure activities. There are challenges in navigating the university experience as a mature student, highlighting issues of ableism and social integration. David shares experiences of ableism in the workplace, emphasizing the importance of addressing uncomfortable conversations around disability. We require nuanced conversations and discomfort in addressing misconceptions. We need to take a nuanced view on being disabled and proud, acknowledging that it depends on the day and circumstances, reflecting the complexity of disability identity. So it's a never say die attitude."  "I do think that point is really quite key is that sometimes it is a yes or no answer, and it completely depends upon the person." BEST MOMENTS "I think it's fascinating the the DUI strands, there's so many parallels and similarities that the more we can connect, the more we all have an even more powerful voice against oppressive forces."  "0.06% of adverts feature disabled people and as we know there's like 20% of any given population has a disability so really Purple Goat is just looking to close that gap and then the benefits come off the back of that."  "Two things can be true at once. And I was like, in my state of being like, we're very much deep into the woo-woo chat, like we're talking about life."  "I once or twice, I got bluntly asked, can you have sex? The introduction of WelcoMe, a digital platform that allows disabled individuals to inform businesses about their needs before arriving, has been well-received and has the potential to revolutionise customer service for disabled individuals. There is a great need for disabled individuals to be seen as business partners and consumers rather than solely recipients of charity. Collaborations with major companies like Levi's and Curry's demonstrate efforts to prove the economic power of disabled consumers, known as the Purple Pound, by providing tailored services and training for staff to cater to their needs. By actively participating in initiatives like using Welcome in businesses, disabled individuals can contribute to proving the economic value of the disabled community and advocate for more inclusive practices in society. BEST MOMENTS "It's almost like this whole hub. And it's crazy. And it's intense. "I just want to remove the barriers, which is what WelcoMe does" "We need to get strength from other people. Despite efforts to be inclusive, there will always be someone left out. The cookbook "Autism Friendly Cookbook" addresses the lack of accessibility in traditional cookbooks for individuals with hidden disabilities, making cooking more accessible. The decision to focus on autism in the cookbook rather than a broader neurodiversity approach was influenced by commercial viability and the need for a cohesive and targeted message. Acknowledging the limitations of inclusivity and the need for targeted solutions rather than trying to cater to every possible individual, recognising that not everyone will fit the bill. BEST MOMENTS "Disabled people are not your free resource. we don't it's just this idea of I still have people who come up to me complete strangers who go oh what happened to you because they don't they don't have the language to talk with nuance."  "Everything has an opposite. So the opposite of inclusion is exclusion."  "It was published in November 2022. It's since won two awards at the Gore, I think it's pronounced the Gorman Awards. It's gone viral on TikTok. It's now a pilot course that I'm teaching down in Sussex."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Ashley and Brooke highlight the importance of resilience, determination, and self-acceptance in the face of societal challenges, and embark upon a conversation that is both enlightening and empowering, offering a fresh perspective on navigating life with a disability. KEY TAKEAWAYS Resilience and determination are key traits that help us to navigate rejection and challenges in their lives. Representation in media for individuals with disabilities is limited and often focuses on simplistic portrayals, such as amputees or wheelchair users. Dealing with online hate and inappropriate messages, especially from devotees, has been a common and distressing experience for many with disabilities in media. It's vital to set boundaries and not engage with inappropriate behaviour, whether online or in person. BEST MOMENTS "I think my main goal in life, and I've always said this, is to kind of pave a way for the younger kids who have limb differences."  "I feel like rejection is something that teaches you something in the end. Maybe it's a good thing. Maybe it just wasn't for me."  "I think resilience and determination kind of come hand in hand with disability, particularly if you've been a disabled child." This diversity highlights the individuality and uniqueness of each person's journey. Education plays a crucial role in shaping perceptions of disability and promoting inclusion. Technology is allowing for the participation of disabled individuals in the film industry. This innovation represents a significant step towards creating more inclusive and accessible opportunities for disabled filmmakers and professionals. Brooke welcomes special guest, Ruth Rathblott to discuss the concept of "unhiding." Ruth shares her personal experiences of living with a limb difference and the challenges she faced in accepting and embracing her disability. They discuss the different perspectives within the disability community regarding terminology and identity, highlighting the importance of individual experiences and the need for open dialogue. Ruth also reflects on her childhood, where she initially didn't see herself as different until a pivotal moment in high school. They delve into the impact of societal beauty standards on individuals with disabilities and the lack of representation in media. The conversation explores the journey of unhiding, which involves acknowledging, finding support, building a community, and ultimately sharing one's experiences to help others.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Acknowledging and accepting one's disability or difference is an important step towards self-acceptance and building deeper connections with others. Finding a trusted person to share one's experiences with can provide support and help in the journey of unhiding. Building a community of individuals with shared experiences can create a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of loneliness. Sharing one's experiences and story can help others who may be going through similar struggles and create a sense of connection and understanding. Representation and visibility of diverse experiences, including disability, in media and society is crucial for breaking down stereotypes and promoting acceptance and inclusion. BEST MOMENTS "I think my hand has been my greatest struggle and it's my greatest gift because it also allows me to connect with people."  "I think hiding, for me, is the problem. And it affects us in so many ways. And then unhiding becomes the bridge to connection, to self-acceptance, to leadership."  "I think sometimes with disability, we don't allow for the questions... So why not be able to ask a question to me if you're wanting to build a relationship with me?"  "I really welcome your prayers. They're not gonna do anything for the growth of this if that's what you're praying for, but I accept all prayers because there are things in my life that I wanna grow."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Brooke engages in a candid conversation with Paul Swain, who acquired a disability later in life. Paul shares his experience of losing an arm and his unique perspective on accepting his disability. Paul reflects on the societal acceptance of disability and the attention-seeking behaviour that some individuals exhibit, before delving into the challenges of adapting to life with a disability, from relearning everyday tasks to dealing with phantom pain. The conversation touches on the resilience and acceptance that comes with being disabled, as well as the societal curiosity and misconceptions surrounding disability. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paul struggles with accepting the loss of his arm, but has learned to embrace the honesty, instead of feeling forced to simply accept it. Disability is definitely an individual thing, and each person must go through it and accept it in their own way Paul feels that sometimes, people use their disability to curry favour or influence behaviour.  Accepting our disability is something we have to come to on our own. We should not simply feel as though we have to be happy and proud about our circumstances because society expects us to BEST MOMENTS "I don't really particularly accept the loss of my arm... I always cover it up, it's always covered up."  "I try not to let it play a part in my life and just carry on... but everybody relates to their disability incredibly individually." "I think sometimes people believe that the acceptance of disability is so much better now than it ever was... Saadiya also addresses the issue of fatigue and the impact of sickle cell on childhood and teenage years, reflecting on the process of understanding and accepting her condition, as well as the resilience she has developed.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. People with sickle cell anaemia experience severe bouts of pain called sickle cell crisis, which can last from a day to a month. BEST MOMENTS "I think there is a misconception I think with doctors and kind of like going to the hospital that it's just a black disease or just like a black condition and I understand where that comes from but I think it can be quite dangerous to kind of categorise a condition that way because medical racism plays a part in everything."  "I definitely say to kind of or thinking about entering the corporate world to look for companies and organisations that really value inclusion and have kind of like processes in place to help people to help their staff with disabilities."  "I think it's definitely a journey, especially if you've had a disability all your life, but society and the way society is set up will make you feel like you shouldn't be proud of it."  "I understand the desperation of wanting like, oh, there must be something, you know. Laura talks about her personal journey with disability, from being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at a young age to navigating the challenges of school and societal perceptions. She also shares their experiences of embracing her disability and finding empowerment through understanding and acceptance.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Casual Ableism is a social media platform that raises awareness about ableism and provides a community for individuals with disabilities. Disability is not a one-size-fits-all experience, and it is important to recognise and respect the unique experiences and perspectives of each individual. It is okay to feel frustrated or overwhelmed by the challenges of disability, and it is important to give yourself permission to feel and process those emotions. Finding a supportive community of friends and allies who accept and understand you for who you are is crucial for navigating the challenges of disability. Adapting and finding solutions that work for you is key in overcoming barriers and moving forward in life with a disability. BEST MOMENTS "I think sometimes we have to take a bit of tragedy with humour."  "I'm definitely proud to say I'm disabled and have a physical disability."  "It's progressive. And for a lot of people, it can be stable for lots of years and then it can progress or it can develop later on in life."  "It's okay to have those moments where you don't feel proud to be disabled, or you don't feel like it's kind of, oh, it's fine, you know, I'll just get on with it."  "Disability is not one size fits all. Brooke welcomes Jamie for a candid and heartfelt conversation about their experiences with disability. They discuss how they refer to their disabilities, including ocular albinism, ADHD, and autism, and the journey of self-identification. Jamie opens up about their challenging childhood, navigating mainstream education, and the impact of internalised ableism. They also share their struggles with employment, the importance of finding supportive allies, and the transformative power of using their voice to advocate for disability inclusion.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Jamie's experience of internalised ableism highlights the impact of societal attitudes and stereotypes on disabled individuals. It is important to challenge these beliefs and advocate for self-acceptance and empowerment. The support and belief of just one person can make a significant difference in a disabled person's life. Having someone who listens, understands, and supports can help build confidence and resilience. Finding and using your voice is crucial. Disabled individuals should feel empowered to speak up about their needs, experiences, and emotions. It is important to advocate for oneself and seek support when needed. The journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance is ongoing. Obtaining a diagnosis can provide validation and understanding, but it is also a continuous process of learning and unlearning. It is essential to seek resources, connect with others, and continue to explore and understand one's own neurodivergent identity. Content creation and sharing lived experiences can have a profound impact on others. By creating accessible content and sharing personal stories, disabled individuals can inspire, educate, and connect with others who may be going through similar experiences. It is a powerful way to challenge ableism and promote inclusivity. BEST MOMENTS "Why is the issue on how we want to self-identify when the real issue is the systemic ableism, the inaccessibility, and the fact that we are treated the mess on but you want to talk about my right to identify."  "My career is now built on being a disability accessibility lead." "I think it's have the confidence to say stop let me talk this is how I actually feel because a lot of decisions that was made for me in my life" "I think it's being able to talk about emotions whether you're male, female, trans, non-binary, being able to have that conversation is such a such an important thing."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Brooke is joined by Dr. Hannah, a disabled and neurodivergent doctor, who shares her experiences with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and ADHD. She discusses the challenges she faced in getting diagnosed with EDS and the lack of awareness and funding for the condition. Dr. Hannah also talks about her journey to getting diagnosed with ADHD and the impact it has had on her career in medicine. She highlights the need for greater inclusion and representation of disabled individuals in the medical field and society as a whole.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Dr. Hannah emphasises the importance of having a variety of acronyms to describe her disabilities, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and ADHD. She proudly identifies as disabled and embraces the diversity of her disabilities. The journey to diagnosis for EDS was challenging for Dr. Hannah, as the symptoms were often dismissed or attributed to being a woman. She was fortunate to receive a diagnosis while in medical school, but recognises the struggles that many others face in obtaining a diagnosis and accessing support. Dr. Hannah faced initial challenges in navigating the medical field as a wheelchair user, but has found ways to adapt and excel in her profession. Dr. Hannah encourages the integration of disability perspectives into broader conversations, rather than segregating disability as a separate topic. She believes that disabled individuals should be included in all discussions and have their experiences valued. BEST MOMENTS "I diagnosed myself and kind of turned up at the cerebrotology appointment going, well, I think I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type three. And she's like, yeah, yeah, you definitely do. crack on."  "I think it's about kind of going, life is awful, life can be bad, but how do we process that and take it apart and not being scared to do so, or at least making sure you have the support to do so as you go."  "I think it's really important that we claim our soft power... It's about kind of accepting all of that and going here is what I think, what do you think?" "I think having the disabled community in my life has radically changed it in all the best way possible... because there are certain things that I used to think I was like, oh, I don't think that's quite normal or quite right." Brooke talks to Chamiah Dewey, who is making waves in the fashion industry by creating inclusive clothing for people with disabilities. Chamiah shares her personal connection to disability, growing up with neurodivergent siblings and being an ally to the disabled community. She discusses her journey into fashion and how she founded her clothing brand, Dewey, which specialises in clothing for individuals under five feet tall. Chamiah talks about the challenges she faced in developing a size chart that caters to the unique needs of her customers and the importance of representation in the fashion industry. She also shares her experience showcasing her designs at London Fashion Week and the emotional impact it had on both her and her models.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Dewey aims to provide fashionable and well-fitting clothing for people under five feet tall, specifically targeting the short stature community. Chamiah's inspiration for starting Dewey came from her encounter with a young person with dwarfism, which sparked her curiosity and led her to realise the lack of clothing options for people with short stature. There is limited information and expertise available on short stature conditions. However, Chamiah persevered and conducted her own research to develop a size chart and create clothing that fits the unique proportions of short stature individuals. Dewey's participation in London Fashion Week was a significant milestone for the brand, as it showcased a bridal collection specifically designed for short stature individuals. The positive reception from the audience and the emotional impact it had on the models highlighted the importance of representation and inclusivity in the fashion industry. BEST MOMENTS "I always love getting the chance to chat about what I do and to meet new people and spread awareness of things that lots of people don't consider."  "I got into this really through meeting a young person who had dwarfism and just learning lots and lots about dwarfism as a condition and then just getting really curious."  "I think listening has been one of the most invaluable pieces. It's just immersing yourself so fully in the community, which I completely am."  "I think seeing people be so shocked that something fit and that they didn't have to roll the arms up was a really humbling experience."  "I want Dewey to be the place that you think of when you're short stature. We're providing clothing that looks like clothing from anywhere else, it's just smaller." - Interviewee VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Brooke talks to the amazing Sami Dar about his experiences growing up with cerebral palsy, navigating school and social norms. Sami shares hisjourney of resilience and adaptability, from attending a school within a hospital during his recovery to excelling in university and pursuing a career in finance. Sami also talks about the creation of 10,000 Disabled Interns, a program that matches disabled students with internships, providing valuable opportunities and challenging the notion that disabled individuals lack ambition.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Being proud of your disability and embracing it can lead to greater self-confidence and a more fulfilling life. Ambition and drive: Disabled individuals can be just as ambitious and driven as anyone else. Having goals and aspirations can provide meaning and purpose in life. Disability often requires adaptability and problem-solving skills. Being adaptable can help navigate challenges and overcome barriers. 10,000 Disabled Interns is a valuable resource that matches disabled students with internships, addressing the lack of accessibility and time constraints that often hinder disabled individuals from pursuing internships. Teenage years can be challenging: Adolescence can be a difficult time for anyone, and being a disabled teenager adds an extra layer of complexity. However, staying true to oneself and riding the wave can lead to personal growth and a brighter future. BEST MOMENTS "I think if you're not proud or you're ashamed of that, or you shy away from that, then you're only making life more difficult for yourself." "There's no need for you to conform to narrow expectations."  "I think it's really wonderful that you're able to provide that service and make sure that disabled people are still thought about when it comes to internships."  "I think a lot of people don't realise that disabled people can also be ambitious and that disability and ambition can coexist."  "I think if you're willing to focus on the positives and be...ignore it and just live your life how you would have done any other way, then you're able to commit to it and achieve so much."  VALUABLE RESOURCES https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/disabled-and-proud/id1621152878 HOST BIO Disabled and Proud is the show that brings listeners a different perspective on disability. Brooke meets Rachel Charlton-Dailey, a writer and activist, to talk about their experiences and perspectives on disability. They discuss the importance of using the term "disabled" as an umbrella term that encompasses various disabilities, the impact of medical misogyny on disabled women, and the lack of guidelines in the media for writing about disability. Rachel also shares their journey of embracing their disabilities and using their platform to raise awareness and advocate for change., highlighting the need for accurate and inclusive representation of disability in the media to challenge stereotypes and promote understanding.  Rachel Charlton-dailey is a freelance journalist and campaigner specialising in disability rights and disability in media. She is a columnist for the daily mirror and the founder of the unwritten. Her first children's book Ruby Hastings Writes Her Own Story is out with Harper Collins on January 8th KEY TAKEAWAYS The media needs clear guidelines for writing about disability: The lack of guidelines in the media leads to inaccurate and harmful portrayals of disability. Clear guidelines would help educate writers and ensure more accurate and respectful representation. Disabled voices are often excluded: Disabled people are often left out of conversations and decision-making processes regarding disability. Their perspectives and experiences are crucial in shaping narratives and policies related to disability. Disability is often portrayed in extremes: Media narratives about disability tend to focus on extremes, either portraying disabled individuals as heroes who have overcome their disabilities or as helpless victims. This binary representation fails to capture the diverse experiences and realities of disabled people. Disability benefits are essential for leveling the playing field: Disability benefits, such as PIP (Personal Independence Payment), are crucial for addressing the extra costs and challenges that disabled individuals face. These benefits help level the playing field and provide necessary support. BEST MOMENTS "It's very interesting when particularly around disability is that people think you owe them an explanation of your disability... But more often than not it is that that people just expect everything from you... It comes down to people just being really nosy and thinking that they're entitled to know all of these things."  "It's that reinforcement that we've had in society through media, through everything, through the way that we interact with disability. It starts literally when babies are in the womb... It's like, well, what if they're not healthy though? Are you going to change your mind about your baby when you discover that they're not healthy?"  "The amount that this government just let disabled people die because they didn't care about us is like... I literally had to just go, no, I'm done here. I'm fucking done here."  "It's just so much, so much of what we do is for, is supposed to fit into non-disabled life, that disabled narratives are missing so much... Disabled people think that they can tell them... I can always tell nine times out of ten when a non-disabled person has written a story about a disability." They delve into the challenges faced by disabled children in school settings and the impact of internalised ableism. Warren also opens up about his decision to transition from a corporate career to working in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), where he now uses his unique perspective and intersectional lens to facilitate conversations and challenge societal norms.  KEY TAKEAWAYS It's important to use accurate and respectful language when referring to disability.  There is an ongoing need for disability awareness and inclusion in educational settings. Warren reflects on his own journey of accepting and embracing his disability, and encourages others to challenge and overcome internalised ableism. Warren's experiences as a disabled person in the corporate world informed his decision to pursue DEI work, where he can leverage his differences and advocate for marginalised communities. There is a need to address racism and other forms of oppression within the DEI field, and a comprehensive approach to DEI that includes race, gender, disability, and other intersecting identities. BEST MOMENTS "I'm not a fan of this sort of narrative around differently abled, and I'm not a fan of calling my disability a superpower."  "Less abled absolutely will not do. It's sending the message that you're not disabled, you're simply less than."  "I think if someone outside of who was involved in it had consulted, you might have got a different answer and a different response." They discuss the complexities of identifying as disabled and the internalised ableism that often comes with invisible disabilities. Vicky also talks about her role as an MP and the challenges and rewards of advocating for disabled people in politics.  KEY TAKEAWAYS There is an internal struggle in identifying as disabled and the societal biases surrounding disability. We must promote self-acceptance and challenge ableism. There is a great need for awareness and understanding of the various types of disabilities and their impact on individuals. As the Shadow Minister for Disabled People, Vicky advocates for the rights and needs of disabled individuals, including addressing issues such as accessibility, discrimination, and healthcare. Vicky encourages disabled individuals to get involved in politics and make their voices heard. BEST MOMENTS "I think it's always a really fascinating discussion, particularly when you're diagnosed with something, because I think it's a bit different than a physical disability."  "I quite like saying that I'm disabled. I don't think there's a problem with that. And this is why I do what I do."  "I always thought arthritis was like, 'Oh, your joints are a bit creaky.' Brooke welcomes Jordan Jarrett Bryan to discuss his experiences as a below-the-knee amputee, looking at topics such as the journey of learning to walk, and the impact of his disability on their childhood and teenage years. They also explore the positive impact of Jordan's disability on his career, particularly in the media industry, touching on the importance of representation and Jordan's own production company, Blackademic, which aims to empower and provide opportunities for underrepresented voices in the media.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Being a below-the-knee amputee, has had a positive impact on his career. It opened doors for Jordan in the media industry, particularly in TV presenting, due to Channel 4's focus on hiring disabled talent for their Paralympics coverage. Jordan's experience as a below-the-knee amputee from a young age allowed him to adapt to his disability without having to relearn how to walk. This early adaptation made it easier for him to navigate his disability and participate in activities like sports. Jordan's positive experience with his disability during his childhood and teenage years can be attributed to the support and acceptance he received from his friends. While there were some instances of teasing, overall, his friends treated him no differently and he did not face significant negative experiences. Jordan's journey of accepting and embracing his disability has led him to redefine his understanding of what it means to be disabled. He now recognises that even though his disability may be less severe compared to others, it is still valid and he can use his platform and privilege to advocate for those who face more significant challenges. BEST MOMENTS "I think I was lucky in that it happening very early... If you're going to lose your leg, I'd rather lose it early than later."  "The quality of it is not important... The quality is not important. That's where the BBC come in. They're saying, don't worry, we'll look after the lighting. We'll look after the sound."  "So let's get the good, but let's broaden the net to find not just, you know, your Daves and your Johns who are white men." "Representation is only half the job.
