This podcast provides some deeper insights into our new publication by Solovyeva et al. (2021) dealing with Arctic Geese in the Eastern Russian Arctic. It provides a showcase for the 'New Digital Arctic' as the myriad changes in the Arctic land-, sea- and coastal-scape are unfolding so fast with devastating outcomes (Krupnik and Crowell 2020). This research shows a more nuanced range and distribution pattern for these two species - Tundra Bean Geese & Greater White-fronted Geese - during moult and brood-rearing than previously known for flyway delineations, nesting and summer range maps etc. This was possible by using Machine Learning and many Open Access GIS data ("Big Data"). Based on the first-time online release of 24 years of field data in very remote areas like rivers of Yakutia, Chaun research station, Chukotka and Northern Kamchatka it presents the best-available public and digital information on the topic, added by GBIF.org data as well as compiled and geo-referenced (Russian) literature data for a good model assessment. This podcast emphasizes the experience and suggestions for data sharing in polar regions and elsehere, as stated by D. Carlson for the International Polar Year (IPY; Carlson 2011) making open access approaches a best-professional practice, if not already mandatory by many funders, e.g.Huettmann et al. (2011), Huettmann and Ickert-Bod (2017) for examples. An application is provided how it can affect better management and protection, e.g. for Climate Change forecast and conservation (Spiridonov et al. 2012). This research raises the question why so many data repositories are either empty, locked behind passwords, or underused, and it shows that Open Access and Open Source in 'The Cloud' can provide a generic progress tfor everybody. Here we provide a workflow and baseline across international researchers to achieve such outcomes with ISO-complian metadata to actually understand the data sets, model inference and outcome. Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) tell the story of why World War One happened – on the weekend of the anniversary of the War starting.----more----   We start in Sarajevo with Gavrilo Princeps shooting the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. But we soon move into exploring some of the theses which historians put forward. We properly explore how the alliance system in Europe acted as a domino effect. We understand the role that the Schliefflen plan had on German thinking. Then we delve into what is known as the Fisher controversy – did the Germans deliberately start the war to help them manage their own internal problems?   The whole story is told through not just words but also through song. A unique set of lyrics brings the whole story to life. It is a refrain throughout the episode and then the whole verse it sung at the end. The episode ends with a segment of the Last Post. Gavrilo Princip grew up on stories of Serbian martyrs who died defending their country from oppression. In 1914, at the age of 19, Gavrilo resolved to join their ranks by killing the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand. We decided to delve into a somewhat controversial character this week, Gavrilo Princip. Often people are painted into a stereotype based on their most noted actions and we tried to avoid that as best as possible on this episode. Gavrilo was a complex individual born into a world that was even more complicated.  In this episode, we set the stage of a pre World War One Europe. We briefly go over some history of the Balkan states, then transition to what major European powers and their citizens were dealing with at this moment in time. Then we talk about the young Slav whose early experiences of life helped lead him down a path that many argue to be the initiating act to World War One. We finish up trying to figure out for ourselves what we can learn from Gavrilo's story and how we see similar ones today. If you like the show, please leave a review on Itunes. On the sunny morning of June 28 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot dead the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo. Their assassination began a chain of events that would bring the world to war, destroy three empires and lead to the creation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Maria Margaronis travels to Belgrade and Sarajevo to unravel the many meanings of Princip then and now, discovering that Princip's past and present remain deeply contested, as current attempts to commemorate both his deeds and his memory book-end a century of conflict.

Maria Margaronis explores the legacy of Gavrilo Princip, the Bosnian Serb whose shots sparked the Great War. His deeds, memory and legacy remain contested in the Balkans and beyond.
