Linking histories of women, relationships to the natural environment, material culture and art, in Embroidering the Landscape: Women, Art and the Environment in British North America, 1740–1770 (Lund Humphries, 2023) Dr. Andrea Pappas presents a new, multi-dimensional view of eighteenth-century American culture from a unique perspective. This book investigates how and why women pictured the landscape in their needlework. It explores the ways their embroidered landscapes address the tumultuous environmental history of the period; how their depictions of nature differ from those made by men; and what women's choices of motifs can tell us about their lives and their relationships to nature. Embroidering the Landscape situates these pastoral and georgic needleworks (c. 1740-1775) at the intersection of environmental and social histories, interpreting them through ecocritical and social lenses. Dr. Pappas' investigation draws out connections between women's depicted landscapes and environmental and cultural history at a time when nature itself was a charged arena for changes in agriculture, husbandry, gardening, and the emerging discourses of botany and natural history. Her insights change our understanding of the relationship between culture and the environment in this period and raise new questions about the unrecognized extent of women's engagement with nature and natural science. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Larissa Humphries (a cello teacher friend) puts on these Summer Contests with her mom Stephanie Hinckley (my piano teacher friend). Such a great idea!First you look at what technical challenges your students may be having, gaps in their learning, things they need to work on. Second, choose a theme and think of 7 musical projects they could do on their own. Some easier than others. Larissa wants to also mention that she tells the students they are working toward the grand prize, she doesn't share that they only have to complete 5 out of 7. That gives her the flexibility to see if 4 out of 7 is enough work for some grand prizes to be awarded. Remember to choose themes and projects that work for YOU in YOUR studio, these are ideas that worked for Larissa in hers. Also check out last week's episode 90 for a repost of more summer ideas including groups, camps, and creative ideas.Maybe this will be the best, most musical summer ever!angelatoone.com/ Instagram: @angelatoone_

In this episode, Dr. Robert McEntarffer, a former high school teacher and current college educator, discusses the cognitive offloading potential offered by AI and on those types of thinking it would be wise not to let AI replace. Rob offers a critique of the term artificial “intelligence”, suggesting that “large language model” may be a more appropriate term given that AI doesn't truly understand or derive meaning from text. Rob highlights both the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI in education and the need for a deeper understanding of cognitive processes in learning. After a long list of health issues, Karen Humphries was diagnosed with a rare type of bile duct cancer called cholangiocarcinoma. She was initially diagnosed in 2021 with Stage 2B gallbladder cancer, had her gallbladder removed, after which the diagnosis was changed to Stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma. Karen underwent a two-part liver resection and a chemotherapy regimen and went into remission. Two years later, she was again diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. Her treatment included biliary stents. Karen knows her cancer is incurable but has survived and leads a happy life. Karen Humphries' life has been marred by numerous health-related issues. Because of a rare genetic condition, in 2010, she had to wear a colostomy bag. A decade later, she experienced severe vomiting, pale colored stools, an inability to eat solid foods, pain in her right-side ovaries, among others. She sought medical attention and got a gallbladder scan. That led to the removal of her gallbladder and a diagnosis of Stage 2B gallbladder cancer. The diagnosis was later revised as cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer. Karen underwent a two-part liver resection, appendix and radical lymph node abstraction, and a six-month chemotherapy regimen with xeloda. She responded well and went into remission. However, in 2023, after biopsies of her neck and liver, the cholangiocarcinoma returned. Doctors told her that her initial diagnosis of Stage 2B gallbladder cancer was actually Stage 4 cholangiocarinoma all along. Her treatment included biliary stents. Karen's cancer has been labeled ‘incurable,' but she undergoes periodic CT and PET scans, and her condition has stabilized. She maintains an upbeat approach to life and mentors others who have been diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma and other forms of cancer.

Take Home Notes: Indispensable: Remaking the Body of Christ1. Everyone Matters in Christ's BodyEach member of the body of Christ is indispensable, regardless of their role or visibility. The less obvious or less "honored" parts are clothed with greater respect in God's eyes.2. Unity Through InterdependenceJust as a physical body relies on all its parts, we rely on each other in the body of Christ. When one member suffers, we all suffer; when one rejoices, we all rejoice.3. Your Gifts Are for Building the KingdomThe Holy Spirit has given each of us unique gifts to strengthen the body and glorify God.Without your contributions, the church isn't at its full strength.4. Remaking the NarrativeLike Paul reimagined the story of the body, we are called to challenge societal norms that devalue others.Christ's body is not hierarchical but rooted in love, equity, and interconnection.5. You Are Beloved and IndispensableYour presence, talents, and service matter deeply to Christ and the community.Whether seen or unseen, celebrated or quiet, you are vital to the church's mission.Reflection Questions:How does knowing you are indispensable to Christ and His body change your perspective on your role in the church? What unique gifts can you offer to strengthen the body of Christ? How can you honor and uplift others in the body, especially those who may feel overlooked?Memory Verse:“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:2

This week we share a “For the Journey” conversation between Bill Haley (Coracle Executive Director) and Mariah Humphries (Executive Director for The Center for Formation, Justice and Peace). Their conversation focuses on Native American spirituality and the role of divine revelation in North America prior to the arrival of Christianity. This week I talk with David Humphries, a professor of English at Queensborough Community College in New York City, about his excellent project Happy Nostalgia: Making Connections with the Music of the ‘90s, which collects essays from CUNY scholars on the last “analog” moment of music fandom, the beautiful and tragic 1990s. We get a chance to trade nostalgic stories about our own music obsessions of the ‘90s, and try to frame how things changed for us (and everyone else) when streaming music blasted a whole lifestyle into oblivion. What died, and what remains alive? And are we just being cranky old men about Spotify's algorithmic nightmare? This is an intense and fun conversation about the meaning of nostalgia and how music gives us a constant pulse through the decades of technological and cultural evolution.
