Hailing from Baltimore and with German roots, Gunther was trying to redeem himself after being demoted due to a letter he wrote discouraging the war. He was honored posthumously with the rank of sergeant, the Divisional Citation for Gallantry in Action, and the Distinguished Service Cross. The script also alludes to the tragic fact that over 11,000 Allied soldiers died between the signing of the armistice and the cessation of hostilities as French Commander in Chief Marshal Foch didn't allow a ceasefire. In a slight departure from my normal podcast format. Today we have a special episode where I   talk with Dr. Greta Uehling about her new book, Everyday War: The Conflict Over Donbas Ukraine. Connecting with Dr. Uehling, reading her book, and learning the experiences of individuals, families, communities, and humanity in the largest war in Europe since World War ii, I wanted to bring her work to. Bridging the fields of political geography, international relations, peace and conflict studies and anthropology, Everyday War considers where peace can be cultivated at an everyday level. Dr. Greta Uehling's scholarship is broadly concerned with international migration and forced displacement. Major projects have examined the experiences of refugees, asylum seekers, and the internally. This book explores the subjective experience of military conflict and forced displacement in Ukraine based on ethnographic field work, she documents how the military conflict reconfigured social worlds that became the site of a different every day kind of war. Prior to teaching in the program on international and comparative studies at the University of Michigan, Dr. Uehling consulted with a number of international organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Watson Institute at Brown University. She holds a PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Michigan.  Her previous book is Beyond Memory, the Deportation and Repatriation of The Crimean Tartars. This book is Everyday War: The Conflict Over Donbas Ukraine. Dr. Uehling, welcome to Threads of the War.

Small comments cost many lives in war.

What is effective in war may not be what is most modern.

Tiredness Kills or at least causes regrets.

The Banality of Evil requires helping hands to those who wish to commit crimes against humanity.

Bravery, danger, and love come together when needed to save those who are under threat.

In War we must all still stand (or in this case sit) for what's right.

When neutrality is violated a nation has a choice. Knowing what you possess will determine what action you take today and in the future. Staying neutral may not be the best option, or even an option at all.

We don't all take the same lessons from battle. Learning the lessons of war is what causes them to get much more violent as the war goes on.

When those who have been in power for so long suddenly fall, everyone else is often surprised at the rapidity of it all.

If we fail to stand up to aggression today we will have to pay a lot more for it in our turn.

With the world on the brink of a new war of choice by a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, I have an earnest request to those who wish to start hostilities.
