On this episode of the NTEB Prophecy News Podcast, in the lead-up to WWI, there was whispers of war everywhere you turned, Archduke Ferdinand was shot and off we went. In the lead-up to WWII, the whispers of war swirled around the funny little man with the funny little mustache, and in the blink of an eye, Nazi Germany rolled tanks into Austria and the world was suddenly at war. Europe in 2024 is a highly-unstable confederacy, straining at the seams, and in the midst of relentless chaos, there is one man at the center, adding fuel to the fire. That one man is Emmanuel Macron, a man who appeared as though sent on a mission, a mission that threatens to erupt into WWIII. At the moment, the political prognosticators are prophesying his imminent downfall, something that looks more and more likely as France heads into the snap election Macron himself called for. In Germany, a man by the name of Björn Höcke has revived the Nazi rallying cry of ‘Everything For Germany', a slogan that was engraved on the daggers of SA commandos. Ever watch those videos of what happens when you add Mentos candy to Coke? Macron is the Coke, and Höcke is the Mentos, prepare for explosion.
World War 3 may have experienced its Archduke Ferdinand moment today. Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot multiple times today by an assassin. The 59-year-old politician was rushed in his limousine to a nearby hospital in the city of Handlova where the prime minister was holding government meetings. He was later transported by helicopter to another hospital. Eyewitnesses said the assassin shot the prime minister in the stomach 3 or 4 times. There is also an unconfirmed report that he was also shot once in the head. The incident occurred outside the House of Culture in Handlova. The latest reports say the prime minister is in a life-threatening condition and his fate will be known within hours.Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. Ireland's export data weakens again. It's beginning to look like a trend. And maybe the world economy is weaker than we thought. The Health Service needs more money. How many countries can say that? It's as true in Ireland as elsewhere. But the suspicion grows that you could give the HSE any amount of money and it would still have a budget hole of €2 billion at the end of the year. Any year. Somebody needs to find teh cure for fiscal incontinence. The world looks ever more dangerous by the day. Plenty of gloomy analyses are appearing that look back on Russia's invasion of Ukraine as the start of something akin to the events that began with assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in June 1914. At the very least, lots of seemingly disparate events are observed and then linked in ways that make for alarmist headlines. The war in Ukraine, Iran's threatened war against Israel, conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Serbia might be about to invade Kosovo, the US placing two carrier groups in the eastern Mediterranean and Chinese threats against Taiwan: all of these things are, for some observers, beginning to look like a pattern. The thread - if there is one - that links most or all of these conflicts, actual or threatened, is growing American dysfunction and, in particular, isolationism of the US. One interpretation of post WW2 history is that the world went through an unusually peaceful period mostly because of ‘Pax Americana': the US as the global policeman. Commentators such as Hal Brands of Johns Hopkins, prominent blogger (‘Substacker' to be precise) Noah Smith and historian Niall Ferguson have all penned dark and pessimistic pieces focussing on different aspects of the threats facing the world. All agree that those threats have not been as great for a very long time. Mostly because ‘Pax Americana' is over.History does teach us that what happens next is unlikely to have been predicted by anybody. But the more apocalyptic analysts see two obvious threats. First, the Israeli armed forces are overwhelmed fighting a three front war in Gaza, the West Bank and along the Lebanese border. Somewhere - perhaps everywhere - in that fight will be Iran. If the US gets involved, so, perhaps, will Iran's new ally, Russia. As an intermediate possible step, Qatar could disrupt global supplies of natural gas in the same way OPEC did to oil in the 1970s - that would make last year's spike in energy prices look like a small-scale rehearsal. The other big foreseeable threat is Taiwan. China has said, explicitly, that it will take back the Island. If it intends to do so over the next decade or so, now would seem to be the most opportune time. ‘Joining the dots' is the favourite activity of the armchair analyst. The pictures that emerge from these exercises can be truly alarming. They could, of course, be completely wrong. But a lot of people are drawing very similar pictures. A version of this essay was published by rediff.com at https://www.rediff.com/news/column/rajeev-srinivasan-hamas-war-is-an-immediate-setback-to-india/20231017.htmIt can be argued on several grounds that the 2023 Israel-Hamas war is a point of inflection indicating the general eclipse of the West, and in fact I have done so in an essay. What is unclear is how the end of this era will play out in the medium term and the long term. The best analogy I can think of is the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria by a Serbian nationalist in 1914 or so, and how that set in motion a chain of events that, among other things, ended the European and Ottoman empires over the next forty or fifty years, and more immediately caused the so-called Great War, now re-framed as World War I.Chaos theory at work: as the saying goes, the flapping of a butterfly's wings in Brazil setting off a tornado in Texas. There is the obvious concern that the Israel-Hamas war could set off World War III, especially given that there are many nuclear weapons in the possession of the belligerents and their friends. Iran has recovered from the debacle of the Stuxnet computer worm that caused their Uranium-enrichment centrifuges to blow up (in what was then lauded as an unacknowledged triumph of American and Israeli cloak-and-dagger and technical know-how). Then there is Pakistan and its rapidly growing arsenal, no doubt helped along by screwdriver assembly of Chinese components, and perhaps knocked-down kits. Pakistan is one of the most vocal supporters of Palestine as an Ummah cause, which is ironic considering that Pakistani soldiers (and maybe irregulars) seconded to Jordan in 1970 during the Black September uprising may have been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Palestinians. The specter of an encompassing World War III is sobering, and just as the crumbling League of Nations was unable to fend off earlier editions of world wars, the toothless United Nations is now unlikely to be able to prevent a new one. It hasn't been able to prevent all the smaller conflicts, such as the Ukraine war, and it is obvious that major powers simply don't care about the UN's exertions and bloviations. Therefore, one of the biggest fears is that the Hamas attack might seed a larger conflagration. Of immediate concern, though, is that a nascent process of normalization in West Asia may now grind to a halt. This can have global consequences. It is likely that the earlier edition of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the Yom Kippur War of 1973, led directly to the Arab oil embargo followed by the shock of their quadruplication of oil prices. This caused inflation in the US, but more seriously, it precipitated a massive transfer of wealth from developing countries, which set them back by decades, compounding human misery. There are thus unforeseen consequences to what happens in West Asia, which, barring some miracle, will continue to dominate energy supplies for the next couple of decades, even if the most optimistic Green initiatives come to fruition. Things are obviously different from 1973, with West Asians (especially Saudi Arabia) much more self-confident, immensely richer, and also cognizant of the fact that their oil/gas bonanzas will run out sooner or later. They need to diversify their economies, and possibly make some new friends, other than those who are dazzled by their petro-dollars.It is this realization that led to the landmark Abraham Accords, whereby several Arab nations normalized their relations with Israel. The general expectation has been that Saudi Arabia would follow suit, and Mohammed bin Salman has been signaling that he is willing to do this (but also, in his own national interest, willing to embrace China and the proposed BRICS+ currency, both of which would be setbacks for the US and the collective West). The biggest geopolitical casualty of the Hamas war is that this normalization will be put on hold. Saudi Arabia simply cannot appear to be mindless of the plight of the largely Muslim Palestinians, even if they are nervous about the decidedly fundamentalist Hamas, who, in an interesting twist, may well be aligning themselves with Shia Iran, the principal regional foe of the Sunni Saudis. However, what is also worth noting is that the Saudis, as well as Egyptians and other Arabs, are all reluctant to resettle Palestinians in their largely empty, and rich, countries. There might be two reasons for this: one, perhaps it is still the ambition of the Arab States to eliminate Israel and wipe it off the map altogether (which is what they, and Iran, proclaimed loudly in the past, although it is not clear this is actually feasible any more). If so, maintaining Palestinians as an aggrieved quasi-nation, which would supply an endless stream of militants to the Hamases and Hezbollahs of the region, is a viable, if brutal, strategy. Two, Arab States may not actually want Palestinians as refugees because they might cause all sorts of domestic problems. This always puzzled me, because on average the Palestinians of 1948 were much better educated than most other Arabs, and could have contributed to other Arab nations. My conjecture is that, given the examples of Pakistani migrants in Britain, the Black September Palestinians in Jordan, and more recent Syrian etc refugees in Europe – easily radicalized and prone to blood-curdling rhetoric and possibly action against their host nations – Arab States want to keep them out. This could be the real reason Egypt refuses to open the border for the fleeing residents of Gaza.. It is a bit like the Rohingya of Myanmar. They have a reputation for being troublesome radical Islamists, and so nobody wants to take them in: not Bangladesh where they originally hail from, not any Arab States, not Pakistan (although some Westerners suggested that India and China should take them. China laughed in their faces, but India dutifully did so). Given all this, and the growing clout of Israel under the American security umbrella, chances are that the Palestinian cause would have become increasingly less relevant to Saudis and other Arabs. And that is precisely what might have motivated Hamas and friends: with the emergent normalization of ties with Israel in the region, and initiatives like i2u2 (Israel, India, US, UAE) and IMEC (India Middle East Europe Corridor), there would be commercial and trade ties that would bind. After all, a major part of these trade corridors would be the infrastructure links (railway lines through Saudi Arabia, the Israeli port of Haifa) that would offer alternative trade routes to Europe from India and Southeast Asia. This would offend China too, because its grand Belt and Road Initiative and trans-European railway links would see less business. Thus, in passing, China also is a winner in this Great Game as West Asia goes on the boil, along with usual suspects Iran, Qatar and Turkey. Thus, from several points of view, this Hamas war is an immediate setback to India: it is one of the few countries in the region that enjoys good relations with both Israel and Saudi Arabia, and IMEC would allow it to recreate the old Spice Route to Europe, which was highly lucrative over millennia. All this is in jeopardy now. The strategic and under-construction Vizhinjam container transhipment port in Thiruvananthapuram is a key part of this ambitious trade route.India also has interests in Iran: the Chabahar port could enable India to create an alternative route to Central Asia and Russia called the INSTC (International North South Transport Corridor) bypassing trouble-prone Pakistan and Afghanistan (although that long-pending logistics link is years behind schedule). India cannot allow its relations with Iran to be affected by the war in Gaza. More broadly, if world trade collapses and/or a war begins now it would be unfortunate timing for India. This is the very moment India is ready to finally leave behind the bitter legacy of colonialism, which looted enormous wealth from India (I have argued it was $10 trillion, but economist Utsa Patnaik puts the figure at $45 trillion). A collapse in the procedures of the ‘liberal, rules-based international order', however biased it is in favor of the West, is unfortunate for India in the medium term, although it would probably be fine in the longer term. There are two other aspects of the response to Gaza that are notable. The first is the rise of ugly anti-Jewish sentiments in many parts of the West. This is of concern to Indians, specifically Hindus, because Hindu-hatred is anti-semitism 2.0 and Hindus cannot wish it away.On the other hand, the Left was startled by the dramatic reaction from American Jews to standard Left positioning of moral equivalence between Hamas and the Israeli Defense Forces. For instance, several Harvard student groups released statements about their support for Palestine and/or Hamas, which probably was seeded by Pakistani and, alas, woke Indian-origin students in their ranks. Retribution was swift: Bill Ackman, a billionaire hedge-fund manager, in effect asked fellow CEOs to blacklist these students. There was furious backpedaling as many students, worried about their job prospects, protested that the statements were made without consulting them. This is positive. The Woke Left in the US is splintering. That may mean the Democratic Party tactic of uber-wokeism may now backfire on them, especially notable as elections are looming in the US. The less the wokeism around, the better for India (see Justin Trudeau's Khalistan antics). The weakening of Western power and resolve vis a vis China is another problem for India. The West simply cannot supply munitions for multiple wars (Ukraine, Gaza, and possibly Taiwan), partly because the US has been deindustrialized. What we might see in the medium term is the deprecation of US power in the Indo-Pacific, and indeed a fallback to isolationism and Fortress America. This would encourage a China that is just waiting to rampage. The current Israel-Hamas war is a net negative for India; the issue of Western Hindu-hatred is a topic for another day. 1650 words, 16 October 2023 This is a public episode. On the eve of WWI, alliances galore across Europe with Germany aligned with Austria-Hungary and France aligned with Russia. All that is needed is a trigger and that happens on June 28, 1914 with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austria-Hungary throne. The alliances declare war on each but Germany ends up fighting on two fronts. The episode explores the conditions that led to the War and the key battles in the initial days of the War, including the first major War Crime of the War, committed by the Turks within the Ottoman Empire.

EPISODE 248: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: Judge Aileen Mercedes Cannon will now begin to decide whether we all live or die. This, sadly, is not hyperbole. A federal judge who has presided over a total of four trials for a total of fourteen days will today make the first of a series of decisions that will ultimately end with whether we all live or die. The forest really CAN never be seen because we're next to the trees and how fitting the analogy is because while we are down here taking samples of the bark to check markings by Jack Smith, the big picture is: this judge, Aileen Cannon will at minimum help decide whether or not Donald Trump is kept out of the White House and that will at minimum help decide whether or not we have any chance of maintaining a president who will lead this nation and thus this world through climate change. It really is that stark, and I think we forget about it and then something snaps the picture into focus and in my case it IS two pictures. The first is that one grinning idiot in the black "SAN DIEGO" shirt and the black shorts and the black cap and the black sunglasses in Death Valley taking selfies with a digital thermometer reading 131 degrees - both as if that heat couldn't hill him, personally, and as if that 131 degree temperature was temporary or transient or unique to that locale or something he has to take a picture of so he can preserve it for his grandchildren and oh by the way at the present rate of acceleration of the climate catastrophe don't worry about preserving it for your grandchildren because you're not going to have any, nor is anybody else, because the last words Donald Trump ever speaks on this earth will be about how money is more important than anything or how climate change is a hoax or both and if any of the existential decisions about this planet of the next five years are made with Trump as president - we're all dead. The other image was this redneck Jason Aldean, the pride of MAGA, New Year's Eve guest at Mar-a-Lago, the yodeling darling of the Climate Denial crowd dropping a song on Friday daring black protestors to – to quote the title “Try That In A Small Town” – and then having to run off the stage and get two IV's stuck in him so he didn't lose consciousness while singing the ferocious tropical heat of Hartford, Connecticut. In July. At night. But there's no man-made climate change. Try THAT in a Small Town, Jason, after the energy grid has failed and your governor chased away all the doctors because Woke. 109 in Rome, 110 expected in Miami, 126 in Sanbao China, 152 at Persian Gulf Airport which is in Iran but closer to Dubai than anywhere else and it didn't matter because it was 152. So if the power had failed at Persian Gulf Airport, I mean, again, energy grid failure -- as if it were Texas -- there would've been a mass casualty event. Judge Cannon is to tell Trump's lawyers and Walt Nauta's lawyers and Jack Smith's team some preliminary findings about the process for handling classified information at the trial and all the indications she gave yesterday suggested she would be adding an item to the agenda: the planned trial start date and timeline and we are now on the path. She won't be the only one who decides whether we all live or die. But she gets the first set of decisions. As to us, history doesn't usually SCHEDULE stuff this important in advance. It didn't warn us about Bubonic Plague or Archduke Ferdinand or Hitler or John Brown. But it's warning us in advance about this. I guess that means we're lucky. B-Block (17:30) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Flynn and Bannon are subpoenaed for the Smartmatic suit against Fox. So? Do they tell the truth, or lie? Harlan Crow tries to deduct the Good Ship Super-Yacht Clarence Thomas; Pink Beret Girl from 1/6 is finally found - and turned in by an EX. And the rule of thumb in cable news is: the first week of a new show is its ratings peak. Which means Kaitlin Collins soon will not be watching her own program. (22:51) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Megyn Kelly blasts RFK Jr's sister because Meg is too dumb to know what RFK Jr's sister DOES; The mayor betrays Atlanta over Cop City; and brilliant plan, Vivek Ramaswamy: on the Supreme Court, he wants: Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and the judge who protected a Beauty Pageant's right to discriminate against transgendered people. Noah Hynick of Minneapolis works at an escape room. He recommends a new play at Bryant Lake Bowl titled “The Assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary Franz Ferdinand.” The play was written by Minnesota stand-up comic Joey Hamburger and is produced by Jackdonkey Productions. “It's all about the events leading up to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand,” Hynick explains. “It's sort of a tragic comedy and follows some real things that happen as well as some not quite true things.” “Lots of places are still feeling the effects of COVID and everything. And now having new theaters come out, I think it's a really good chance to support smaller theaters and new art,” Hynick said. The show runs June 14-17, with an additional performance June 22. Amy Garretson of Rochester is the education and community outreach coordinator with the Rochester Art Center. She's excited that a new art house movie theater has opened in the Cooke Park neighborhood of Rochester, Pop's Art Theater. “The type of films they're showing are either films that are shown before the wider release at the big theaters, or they're just independent cinema that you're really just not going to see screened anywhere else in southeast Minnesota,” Garretson said. “After a long drought, there's finally a place where you can go to see interesting, innovative independent cinema here in Rochester.” Pop's Art Theater's screenings currently include “Dalíland,” a 2022 film about Salvador Dalí starring Ben Kingsley, and two classics of Hong Kong action cinema, “Police Story 2” with Jackie Chan and 1972's “Fist of Fury” with Bruce Lee. St. Paul's Christine Sweet is a former classical music broadcaster with Classical MPR and a current member of the Twin Cities theater community. “Ladyslipper Ensemble is one of my favorite local chamber music ensembles,” she says. “And that's because every time I've been to a Ladyslipper concert, I hear something wonderful that I've never heard before — whether it's brand new or just new to me.” She explains that Ladyslipper is “a group of four instrumentalists plus mezzo-soprano Sahar Hassan, who is its director. They typically don't perform as a quintet but in combinations of those instruments, or instruments and voice and sometimes they also have guest performers.” The next Ladyslipper performance will include music of Gabriel Fauré and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, as well as a premiere of a new piece by Minnesota composer Carol Barnett. The event will take place June 12 at MetroNOME Brewery in St. Paul.

"There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. THE REST OF THE STORY Archduke Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria (18 December 1863 – 28 June 1914) was the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary. His assassination in Sarajevo was the most immediate cause of World War I.
Here's a midweek special-the first of a four part series on WWI! In this episode I will look at the spark that sets off the Great War: the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and the Sandwich Theory. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cassady-cooper/message
Archduke Franz Ferdinand had the burden of the Hapsburg dynasty heaped upon his shoulders, as Europe was in the crosshairs of a great reset in 1914. Serbia, under the sway of revolutionary forces was bridling at the bit for independence, and while Ferdinand was not opposed to more liberal measures and freedoms in the vassal states of the Hapsburg empire, he also had a grave mistrust of some of his closest guards, the Hungarian legion, whom he believed could be swayed into am inter-army rebellion. Ferdinand had an almost pathological disdain for them.On Sunday, 28 June 1914, at about 10:45 am, Franz Ferdinand, his wife (Countess Sophie Chotek) and their unborn baby were assassinated in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Within months WWI begins to rage across Europe. It will last 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks. An estimated 68,176,000 would either die or be wounded during it's horrific carnage, which would devastate many remnants of the Tartarian world and re-draw Europe's political boundaries, while also launching the USA into it's first series of global conflicts, which for all intents and purposes started when the Lusitania was sunk off the Scottish coast in 1915.

On 28 June 1914, a young Serb named Gavrilo Princip sat outside a Delicatessen in Sarajevo, reflecting on his role in a botched assassination attempt on Archduke Ferdinand – heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire. To his surprise, the intended target suddenly came back into view. This time there would be no mistake. He calmly approached the car and fired two shots. One at Ferdinand, the other at his wife Sophie. Each proved fatal. This violent crime which led directly to the outbreak of World War I, wasn't the act of a lone wolf gunman. It was just the latest and most devastating in a series of terrorist acts performed by members of the Serbian Black Hand. In this episode, I explore the shadowy group's origins, their activities, and how their ultimate dream was realized in 1918 though few of them were alive to see it. Exploring what fun historical event took place on this day
I briefly discuss Pepe le Pew and how being cancelled is actually become good PR.Then I spin a tale about the bizarre day that Archduke Ferdinand met his demise at the hand of an assassin. A day so filled with strange mistakes and farcical happenstance that it would read like a slapstick comedy if it didn't launch events that ended the lives of close to 20 million people.
WELCOME BACK!You know how some guys are funny when they're mad?? Hugh Wilson must be one of those guys. CBS was all over him during the first season of WKRP to write more "visual gags." Over on ABC, "Laverne & Shirley" was a hit doing a lot of slapstick. Hugh resisted...he fought it...he thought it was lowbrow. He said WKRP is smarter than that!! The Mighty KRP talks about the Archduke Ferdinand and being obtuse!! Hugh gave in. THIS is the result!! Turns out, Hugh's pretty darn funny when he writes visual gags. "Fish Story" is LOADED with the most over-the-top visuals you could imagine...and they ALL...well, okay...and MOST of them work!! This is where they tucked in that incredible B-story about Johnny getting clearer headed with each shot of whiskey!! It's hilarious!! So if you're ready, grab a hat...I don't know, ask Venus...and load up the gang for one heck of a joyride. Officer Plyler would like to see your license and registration, then he advises you to hit "play" while having another shot of Jack Daniels. WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! We highly recommend the 'Shout Factory' boxed DVD set of the entire WKRP series. For reasons you'll have to listen to in the "Prolog" episode, all streaming versions of the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" have had the original music cues removed. Generic music beds and stings were used in place of the original music for the syndicated version of the series. 'Shout Factory' has been able to restore an estimated 85% of all WKRP music cues to the original "as-aired" content for their DVD release. They've also restored scenes that had been cut to shorten episodes for syndication. The original eps ran 25 minutes. The syndication eps were shortened to 22 minutes. Over 88 episodes that's more than four hours of lost content, including the performance by "Detective" at the end of "Hoodlum Rock." Get the COMPLETE series...get the Shout Factory DVDs. The Shout Factory complete series box has a release date of 2014. All individual seasons of Shout Factory disks were released starting in 2015.]The WKRP-Cast is a weekly re-watch podcast spending time with the original "WKRP in Cincinnati" which aired from 1978-82. Mozart’s “Ascanio in Alba” was commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa. Her son, who would be Emperor Joseph II (who is featured in the movie “Amadeus”) would remember Mozart very well 10 years later when Wolfgang comes to Vienna. This opera was composed for Empress Maria’s wedding of her third son, Archduke Ferdinand, and Princess Maria Beatrice of Modena. The wedding was held in Milan on October 15, 1771. We tell the tragic love story of Sophie, who married the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and whose murder helped start WW1. Like so many women she was belittled when alive and forgotten when dead. We put her back in the story.----more---- From a modest family she was not noble enough to marry into Royalty. But Franz Ferdinand and her shared a forbidden love. Until it was discovered by chance. Scandal ensued. The Hapsburg Emperor forbade the match. But eventually relented. But at a terrible price for Sophie and Franz. Their children were disinherited. She was to be treated as the lowest person at Court. They accepted the sacrifice for love. We see how these slights led Franz and her to make a series of fateful decisions on that day in Sarajevo. The decision to travel together in the car and her refusal to leave his side are all explained by the prejudice and abuse she received in Austria. Her devotion played into the hands of Gavrilo Princeps. And they were both shot dead. The Archuke’s last words were for her. Their death led directly to the outbreak of World War One. We raise questions about the shooting in Sarajevo which led to World War 1 We tell the story of the Hapsburg monarch and how it built and empire through marriage. We tell how those marriage rules meant marrying for love was almost impossible We tell how Sophie, from a modest background, met Archduke Ferdinand before World War 1 We tell how their affair was discovered and a great scandal ensued. Eventually Sophie and Franz are allowed to marry We show the similarities between their story and the Cinderella story. But their children are disinherited. Sophie is treated appallingly by the rich families of Vienna In 1914 the couple visit Sarajevo They are shot dead by Gavrilo Princeps. This shooting precipitates the outbreak of World War 1 But after their death the Archduke’s Will is read and he ensures that finally he and Sophie are treated equally. Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) tell the story of why World War One happened – on the weekend of the anniversary of the War starting.----more---- We start in Sarajevo with Gavrilo Princeps shooting the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. But we soon move into exploring some of the theses which historians put forward. We properly explore how the alliance system in Europe acted as a domino effect. We understand the role that the Schliefflen plan had on German thinking. Then we delve into what is known as the Fisher controversy – did the Germans deliberately start the war to help them manage their own internal problems? The whole story is told through not just words but also through song. A unique set of lyrics brings the whole story to life. It is a refrain throughout the episode and then the whole verse it sung at the end. The episode ends with a segment of the Last Post. For people who would like to sing along with the song, the lyrics are here: "Gavrilo shot an old Archduke I don’t know why he shot the ArchdukeAustria did attack the Serbs Not for them a war of words The Kaiser attacked the Tsar as well The world was alight with bullet and shell The Germans did attack poor France Something to do with the trains at first glance German troops attacked Belgium They certainly were not welcome Britain came to Belgium’s aid They saw it as a great crusade The colonies helped Britain out With all their help, we were in with a shout America she turned up late But when she came she was first rate And millions died" If you liked this episode you might like our episode on the Christmas Truce of 1914. https://www.historystorytime.com/e/the-christmas-truce-of-1914-1544981461/ Or you might like the story of Jack Cornwell who won the VC, the highest award for gallantry, at the age of just 16 at the Battle of Jutland. https://www.historystorytime.com/e/jack-cornwell-vc-and-the-battle-of-jutland/
On this day in 1914, a young Serb nationalist, Gavrilo Princip, assassinated Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sofia in Sarajevo. Those shots are widely considered to have been the spark that exploded World War 1. Produced and presented by Brian Byrne.

Economist Richard Wolff joins Thom with a look at the propping up of the American economy on the brink of a war Donald Trump has deliberately cultivated. As thousands of troops are deployed to the Persian Gulf, are we watching another Archduke Ferdinand situation unfolding? Thom thinks we are heading towards a bi-polar world, with Iran, Russian, and China on one side, and America, Saudi Arabia, and Israel on the other, as well as possibly Europe. How could this relate to the Fed propping up the economy and the long withheld consequences of bailing out the world economy is 2008? Even though the constitution says that only Congress may declare war, will Trump use these crises to become something like a king?
Introduction From the Spanish Inquisition, and before, to today, True Believers have been attacking people, cancelling people is the new term. Cancelled physically by killing, or psychologically and financially by insults, false accusations and specious accusations of, well, simply not being pure enough, of not having always shown 100% consistency with current hard and fast true beliefs. No matter how often current orthodoxy may change, those who are True Believers in the orthodoxy preached by their chosen group are all in to the point where nothing else is at all acceptable. That is the subject of today’s 10-minute episode. Continuing The entire “You are with me or you are against me.” thought process is invading virtually every part of our lives. And dividing our country and our friends and families. Here’s how to fix all of that. Start with a search for common goals. Do not start with a statement of how right you are. Let’s take a look at some of our history and see if there are any lessons for today. WWI was a horrific affair, with tens of millions of dead, maimed and ruined lives. Often people ask how any war started, and sometimes there is a clear--if unsatisfactory--answer. WWII started in Europe when Germany attacked Poland, and later attacked Russia. Attacks led by True Believer Adolph Hitler and his Believer followers. It started in the Pacific when Japan attacked the US. Japan was led by True Believer General Hideki Tojo, Prime Minister during the war, and his Believer followers. The Allies, mainly the US, Russia, France and Britain, had clear and well justified reasons to fight the Axis; Germany, Italy and Japan. The Korean War started when the North attacked the South. The justification, to save South Korea and to contain communism, was less universally acclaimed, but still justified. The Korean and Chinese True Believers lit this fire. Vietnam, also justified as necessary to contain communism, was simply an exercise in futility, and a monument to ambition and ignorance. But the “think tank” in Washington, to me exemplified by the lead “numbers man” Robert McNamara, a senior American business executive and Secretary of Defense, serving from 1961 to 1968 under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. McNamara was dead (pun intended) wrong about the war, and 58,000 Anericans paid the ultimate price for his beliefs. Ah, but he was a True Believer. He Truly Believed in supporting a corrupt Catholic government in Buddhist South Vietnam. He Truly Believed that by observing the greater numbers of the enemy killed vs the number of Americans killed, that we were willing. He seems to have forgotten that you win wars by taking--and holding--ground. But he was a numbers man. And a True Believer. Now to WWI. Most of us learned that it started when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated. A young Serbia Muslim, Gavrilo Princip, participated, along with 4 other Serbs and a Bosniak, in assassinating the heir-apparent to the Austrio-Hungarian empire. A series of threats, demands and insults created a clash of egos that exploded into WWI. It is not unlike a bar fight, where no one really knows how it started, but there is blood and bodies everywhere. Princip was a True Believer. Kaiser Wilhem, II of Germany, a major player, was a True Believer. As were many of the young men from both sides who were taught that God was on their side. Despite the death and destruction, despite new weapons of war; airplanes, gas and machine guns, virtually nothing was decided. But enough True Believers were left from both sides to help trigger WWII. (In a telling twist, Muslim Serbia sees Princip as a hero, Christian Bosnia sees him as a traitor.) Communism, a far greater killer than Nazism, is fueled and expanded by True Believers. How else could any political/economic system, that has never worked anywhere, get away with killing 40 million people in Stalin’s Russia and 80 million in Mao’s China,
22 September 2019 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 8:16-18 + Homily 19 Minutes 40 Seconds Link to the Readings: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/092319.cfm (New American Bible, Revised Edition) From the parish bulletin: As with quotations that are variously attributed, journalists including Charles Anderson Dana of the “New York Tribune” and John B. Bogart of the “New York Sun” are said to have coined the aphorism: “‘Dog bites man’ does not make the news, but ‘Man bites dog’ does.” Human nature is fascinated by what is exceptional and scandalous. But “skandalon” really means more than that. It is a “stumbling block” that trips up the way mere mortals think things are supposed to be. Theologically, there is the “Scandal of Particularity.” It has two aspects. First is the doctrine that the Creator of the universe has solicitude for every minute detail of it, even every sparrow and each hair on your head (cf. Matt. 10:29). This has ramifications even in mathematics where the “Chaos Theory” proposes a “Butterfly Effect,” meaning that something as slight as the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in New Delhi might cause a hurricane in New York. So too it is with people. Every human action can have consequences beyond fathoming. There is the prime example of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, that started a domino effect leading to the First World War. His chauffeur spoke only Czech and did not understand the orders of German security officers to follow a route safe from assassins. So he drove according to the original plan and came within feet of a radical Bosnian who had not expected such luck. It might be said that 17 million people eventually died because one man took a wrong turn. The second part of the Scandal of Particularity is the acknowledgement that Christ, whose divine nature has no beginning or end, came to our small planet with a human nature as the unique savior from sin and death. “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2a). His divine nature enables him to see “the big picture” while his human nature involves him in the minutest details of ordinary life. If this is scandalous, it is because presently we are limited to categories of time and space, and we find it hard to think of importance without being overwhelmed by size and power. In another quotation variously attributed, Stalin is said to have remarked: “The death of one man is a tragedy; the death of a million men is a statistic.” The same dictator mockingly asked, “How many divisions does the Pope have?” He knows now – though a bit too late. But the biggest scandal of all to the limited mind, and so bold that it is refreshing when it expands the mind, is the Lord’s declaration: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father apart from me” (John 14:6).

Summary Our leaders, political and otherwise, are encouraging us to fight each other for their benefit. We at Revolution 2.0™ must lead the way out of this mess. In Christmas of 1914, 5 months after the start of the brutal and senseless WWI, a strange and most wonderful event was orchestrated by the troops. At the first light of dawn that Christmas Day, German soldiers emerged from their trenches and approached the Allied lines across No-Man’s land, calling out “Merry Christmas”. At first, the Allied soldiers feared it was a trick, but seeing the Germans were unarmed, they climbed out of their trenches and shook hands with the enemy soldiers. The men exchanged presents of cigarettes and plum puddings and sang carols and songs. There was even a documented case of soldiers from the warring sides playing a good-natured game of soccer. A Christmas miracle? Absolutely. Might this miracle have spread if allowed? You bet. Well, what did happen? Central Powers leaders (Germany and her allies) and Allied leaders, including the US, Britain and France, punished the officers and non-commissioned officers who were there. The next day, they started shooting at each other again. The war, which many had expected to have been over by that Christmas, escalated, eventually killing 17 million; 7 million military, and 10 million civilians. For the next 10 minutes, we will unpack what what this real-life miracle means to us today, and how we can learn powerful and necessary lessons from it. For the next 10 minutes, we will unpack what what this real-life miracle means to us today, and how we can learn powerful and necessary lessons from it. The best way to describe the start of WWI is that it broke out like a bar fight, and would up as a brawl that involved--and decimated--the entire town. A Serbian terrorist assassinated the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. Soon after, a world war erupted. A senseless, devastating war, with nothing more driving the different factions than nonsense like, “My team will murder your team.” and “We’re in the right, and you are in the wrong.” Today’s key point: The leaders of the two warring sides in our government, call them the Central Powers and the Allies, and you can pick which is which, are invested in continuing the war between between us for their benefit; they want to stay in command, with their party gaining power. We citizens, the soldiers, non-commissioned and commissioned officers, if you will, are being forced into this escalating war to our peril. Unnecessary wars are always like that: The Generals love them,

The Great War started as a conflict between Austria and Serbia. Now, amid all the other conflicts emerging as the war goes continental, Austria makes its bid to punish Serbia for the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand.
In the four weeks following the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the Austrian government slowly pondered its response. Meanwhile, in the rest of Europe, the murders were already being forgotten.

It’s about WW1 news 100 years ago this week - and it’s about WW1 NOW - news and updates about the centennial and the commemoration.WW1 Centennial News is brought to you by the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission and the Pritzker Military Museum and Library. Today is May 17th, 2017 and I’m Theo Mayer - Chief Technologist for the World War One Centennial Commission and your host. World War One THEN 100 Year Ago This Week We have gone back in time 100 years - and the united states government launches the “The Official Bulletin” the country’s war information newspaper. It is published daily under order of the - President of the United States - published - by the Committee on Public Information, George Creel - ChairmanWe have introduced you to George Creel previously. Creel is a journalist, friend and staunch supporter of Woodrow Wilson - especially during the election of 1916. So it’s not surprising that President Wilson appoints Creel to head the newly minted Committee on Public Information - the CPI - as a part of the new war effort. The CPI’s mission is to swing public sentiment and backing in favor of the U.S. war effort. Effectively George Creel is the head of America's propaganda and war information bureau. This includes all aspects of the U.S. media, including print, film, posters, music, paintings, cartoons… everything. One of the key products of the CPI is the Official Bulletin, largely forgotten and gone unnoticed - in the century since.Starting this week, We are re-publishing each issue of this daily historically newspaper on the centennial date of its release. This archive is a wonderful cultural resource that illuminates this dynamic period in our country’s history.Fortunately, the entire archive has been digitized by Google Books and we are very excited to bring it to you as a daily serial on our web site - at ww1cc.org/bulletin - all lower case. The editorial team at WW1 Centennial News is going over the 120 or so weekly articles, bringing you some of the interesting headlines and digging into a story or two. This week, some of the headlines read:“Urgent need of ships for coastal defense is outlined”This article includes the interesting note: A number of the finest yachts in the country have been tendered to the Government by the owners for use during the war, either free or on a nominal lease basis”In the article - the Assistant Secretary of the Navy writes - “We need coastal defenses. The present war is showing that the submarine is a weapon that has an important bearing on the final result.”That astute assistant secretary of the navy in 1917 will become the 32nd President of the United States in 1933 - Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Another headline reads - MISSION TO RUSSIA.The Department of State authorizes the members of the special diplomatic mission of the United States of America to Russia - our close allies during this war.REGISTRATION DISTINCT FROM THE DRAFT,STATEMENT BY WAR DEPARTMENT EXPLAINSThis article that explains that all young men between 21 and 30 must REGISTER for the draft - but that being drafted is a separate and different issue. This is the first selective service moment in our nation’s history and there is a lot of interest and confusion about how it works. In fact - in the May 12, 1917 issue of the Official Bulletin - there is a great article looking at the number of men in the US who will be subject to QUOTE “selective conscription”.They estimate that around 10 million men between ages 21 and 30 need to register. That is around 10% of the US’ estimated population of 103-104 million people in 1917.Based on state populations, they are looking at around 1 million young men from New York, 875,000 from Pennsylvania, half a million from Illinois, Texas and Ohio, Remember a few weeks ago we talked about the fact that the US had virtually no national military - that in fact the state militias totally outnumbered the federal army. The building of that army is a story we will be following over the coming weeks.Link: ww1cc.org/bulletin Great War Project Joining us now is former NPR correspondent Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. This week Mike also focuses on the domestic struggle to get a handle on what it means - now that we have declared war. Mike - It sure doesn’t sound like the nation is of one mind on this!?[Mike Shuster]LINK:http://greatwarproject.org/2017/05/14/a-volunteer-army-or-the-draft/That was Mike Shuster from the Great War Project blog. War in the Sky Let’s take a look at the Great War in the sky one hundred years ago this week. Our story is about the first allied flying boat that managed to down a german Zeppelin. What IS a flying boat. Well It’s different from a pontoon sea-plane that has floats replacing or in addition to landing gear. Instead - flying boats are like ship hulls with wings - they do have pontoons out on the wings for stability when they land and take off - but they are a very desirable concept because they can be big and use a really long distance to take off and land - this works because they don’t need a runway to operate them just a reasonably calm body of water. The Curtiss H series is America’s leading flying boat design in WW1 - In fact, you might remember a few weeks ago when Michael Lombardi boeing’s senior historian, told us about an early Boeing contract to build some Curtiss H series flying boats under licence.Well one hundred years ago this week, a canadian flyer Robert Leike is tooling on patrol around in the north sea near amsterdam with his flight commander John Galpin. It’s nasty and rainy weather and the clouds are low. Around 4:45 am, the weather breaks and they spot a big german Zeppelin - The L-22 about 10-15 miles away.So they give chase to sneak up on her - the flight commander, Lt. Galpin gives Leike the controls and goes to man the twin Lewis Guns. They get to within half a mile before the zep spots them - but by then it’s too late. Leike dives down on her like a hawk as Galpin unloads an entire drum of incendiary bullets into the zeppelin - which catches on fire and crashes into the sea. The tiny wasp has stung the giant beast and prevailed. It’s a win for the allies and the loss of a precious zeppelin for the Germans. Leike is given the distinguished service cross and Galpin the distinguished service order for their action one hundred year ago this week in the great war in the sky.LINK:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Leckie_(RCAF_officer)#World_War_Ihttps://www.junobeach.org/canada-in-wwii/articles/air-vice-marshal-robert-leckie/ The Great War Channel Let’s move on to our friends from the Great War Channel on Youtube. They have produced a library of over 400 videos - about WW1 - over the past few years. The videos provide detailed insights - as well as summaries and overviews - If you want to explore WW1 on video we recommend the Great War channel on Youtube - This week the new episodes include: One hundred years ago this week - The Macedonian Standoff - The Five Nation Army Is Repelled And another episode which is a special - shot on location in France with the dutch development team from the Battle of Verdun video game. They explore the validity (or not) of teaching about WW1 with video game technology. This is a really interesting discussion. In this story about WW1 soldiers who, reluctantly at first, embraced embroidery as a therapy. Also known as “fancy work” - embroidery was widely used as a form of therapy for British and ANZAC soldiers wounded in the War – challenging the gendered construct of it - as “women’s work” . Go to ww1cc.org/369 - this is a project endorsed by the World War I Centennial Commission and sponsored in part by The Coca Cola Foundation. The project re-creates the Harlem Hellfighter’s 369th Regimental Band. The band originally consisted of 65 African American and Puerto Rican doughboys who charmed the hearts and minds of Americans and Europeans alike. It is said that they brought Jazz to Europe.Beginning last November, the program solicited freshmen and sophomore music students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other colleges and universities across America to enter a competition to be selected to join a re-creation of the 369th band. The band members have now been selected. And this past week it was announced that Dr. Isrea Butler, will lead the band as they retrace the steps of the original 369th, with performances at centennial celebrations in New York City; Brest and Paris in France; and a host of other historic locales. Dr. Buttler is currently the Director of Bands at The University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Both Mary Borden and Ellen Lamotte were field hospital nurses who witnessed some of WWI's worst casualties and went on to write about the experience. The post - discusses how many artistic works were censored after WWI because they seemingly portrayed the conflict, or the countries involved, in a negative light. Today, many of these previously censored works are considered among the best artistic representations of the war - in part - because of to the realistic way they painted a horrible, gory, corrupt, and anti-triumphant picture of combat and trench warfare. What do we mean when we claim that something is a cause of something else that smoking causes cancer, that the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand caused World War I, that the 8-ball caused the other billiard ball to go into the side pocket? In Causation, Evidence, and Inference (Routledge 2015), Julian Reiss defends an inferentialist account in which causal claims are inferred from evidence for a hypothesis and are the basis of inferences to other consequences. Reiss, who is Professor of Philosophy at Durham University, argues that causal claims depend on contextual factors, such as background knowledge and the purpose for making the claim, and that such claims are pluralistic due to the variety of kinds of evidence from which they can be inferred. Focusing on causal claims in the biomedical and social sciences, he provides a critical overview of prominent theories of causation and evidence, and argues that his view can overcome many of the problems that have been raised for these views. Will Weldon (Ugh! A Podcast) joins H. Alan and Kerri for The Golden Girls season 2 episode “Love Rose,” where they discuss the 1980s version of Tinder, some history about the Archduke Ferdinand’s assassination, and the correct meaning of a joke about Rose and her undies.
Throughout history, from Cesar thru Lincoln, from Archduke Ferdinand and Gandhi through the Kennedys and Malcolm X, a bullet has changed the world. But what’s different when assassination is not a random deranged act, but an instrument of policy. First, it’s the stuff of movies. Think about it; The Manchurian Candidate, Day of the Jackal, Executive Action, Parallax View, to name a few. Add to this list, Syriana, a story based on the life of former CIA operative Robert Baer.Baer has now codified his unique line of work in The Perfect Kill: 21 Laws for AssassinsMy conversation with Robert Baer:
On the sunny morning of June 28 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot dead the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo. Their assassination began a chain of events that would bring the world to war, destroy three empires and lead to the creation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Maria Margaronis travels to Belgrade and Sarajevo to unravel the many meanings of Princip then and now, discovering that Princip's past and present remain deeply contested, as current attempts to commemorate both his deeds and his memory book-end a century of conflict.
June the 28th 1914 was the day Gavrilo Princip shot Archduke Ferdinand. It led to the start of the First World War. Allan Little considers why today's Sarajevo is divided over whether Princip was a hero or a terrorist. President al-Sisi's new regime in Cairo: Louisa Loveluck's been finding out whether Egyptians regret voting in a new era of authoritarianism. Brazil has one of the world's worst crack cocaine problems: Katy Watson's been to see a government project which is trying to address it. Aidan O'Donnell visits a sacred city in the Horn of Africa. It is also noted for its production of beer. And while India's new rulers are keen to promote the use of Hindi, Craig Jeffrey's been finding out that the English language is still omnipresent, creeping into even unexpected corners of everyday society.
Prof Christopher Clark unpicks the complex sequence of events that led to the First World War. In the first programme, he travels to Sarajevo to tell the story of extraordinary chances that led to the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.
David R. George III: Revelation and Dust. The Star Trek universe as you know it is about to change. Over the past decade the prime universe has grown richly complex as print adventures have taken over where television left off. Now, in a new five-book series titled "The Fall," some of Star Trek's greatest authors are going to rock the Federation to its core with an adventure that takes place over a period of sixty days and involves TNG, DS9, and Titan. In this episode of Literary Treks hosts Matthew Rushing and Christopher Jones kick off The Fall with special guest David R. George III, whose DS9 novel Revelation and Dust sets the stage for the series. We discuss the incredible new Starfleet-built Deep Space 9 station, how Doug Drexler, Andy Probert, and Douglas E. Graves helped shape the visual design, the continuation of Kira's journey and the broader DS9 story, the challenges of writing a book that builds upon so many past novels while making the story accessible to new readers, and how Revelation and Dust not only sets up The Fall but also pays tribute to Deep Space Nine on its 20th anniversary. Plus, in news, we take a close look inside Larry Nemecek's Stellar Cartography.
Vienna Hofburg - Imperial Apartments, Sisi Museum, Silver Collection
This service came to Vienna from Castle Miramare near Trieste, the former residence of Archduke Ferdinand Max, later to become Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. The archduke was the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph. In 1854 he became commander-in-chief of the imperial and royal navy. In 1864 he accepted the emperorship of Mexico, but failed to establish himself in his new empire. He was taken prisoner by the leader of the republican forces, Benito Juarez, who had him shot by firing squad in 1867. You will hear more about this episode in the Imperial Apartments. The dinner service is a product of the Herend porcelain manufactory in Hungary, which initially specialised in copies of Chinese models. Emperor Maximilian ordered this service for his residence in Chapultepek in 1865. Moritz Fischer, the owner of the manufactory, was permitted to display the service in 1867 at the Paris World Exhibition as an advertisement for Herend’s wares. By the time the exhibition had ended Maximilian was dead, and the service was never sent to Mexico.www.hofburg-wien.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
