Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes!Anton Krupicka is back on the podcast! Few athletes in ultrarunning generate as much excitement as Anton, and he's returned with a bang—recently setting a fastest known time on the iconic LA Freeway route and securing second place finish at the Grindstone 100 this past weekend.Beyond his impressive athletic achievements, which notably helped shape the ultrarunning culture in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Anton is a thoughtful and generous conversationalist. He shares plenty of insights in this episode. While the FKT and race results provide a backdrop, we also dive deeper into nostalgic ultrarunning memories (his friendships with Scott Jurek, Geoff Roes, and Kyle Skaggs), engaging discussions on philosophy (athlete personalities and bike culture), current events (Leadville 100), and his aspirations (UTMB and Hardrock goals). That idiot." "Harmony and I's first date was watching Unbreakable." In the third and final installment of the MidPacker Pod Mini Series “Revisiting Unbreakable” hosts Troy Meadows and MVD, Matt Van Delsam sit down with Dylan Bowman Founder of Freetrail and Broadcast host of the WSER live stream that is a 3 time Western States top ten finisher whose career took off in the years after the release of Unbreakable. Dylan has an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of Ultrarunning in the earthly 2000's and brought a “College Gameday” vibe to the conversation that plays like 3 long time friends unpacking the movie on a weekly long run. In this episode, the hosts continue their discussion about the film 'Unbreakable' and the impact it had on the trail running community. They focus on the experiences and stories of the four main athletes featured in the film: Anton Krupicka, Geoff Roes, Hal Koerner, and Kilian Jornet. They discuss how these athletes influenced the sport and share their own personal interactions with them. They also analyze Killian Jornet's race at the 2010 Western States and the mistakes he made, such as not carrying water and taking too much time at aid stations. They focus on the early experiences and inspirations of the participants in the sport of trail running. It covers topics such as the first time they saw the movie 'Unbreakable', their introduction to Western States, the Montreal Ultra Cup team, and the influence of Scott Jurek. The conversation also touches on the legacy of David Horton, the impact of Jen Shelton, and the unique character of Ricky Gates. Unbreakable is a trail running film that had a significant impact on the sport. It captured a moment in time and showcased the legends of the sport, including Jeff Rose, Anton Krupicka, Hal Koerner, and Kilian Jornet. The film inspired a new generation of athletes and filmmakers, legitimizing the sport and paving the way for more emotional and documentary-style films. Unbreakable also played a role in the growth of trail running, with the 2021 Western States lottery having over 10,000 participants. The film remains a timeless piece of trail running history. Kia ora e te whānau. Exactly 160 episodes ago, when Anna Frost (or Frosty as she is known) came on our show, we gushed in the bio. Oh, how we GUSHED. And why not? Anna is, like, 100% one of the most successful trail and ultra running exports from Aotearoa. She burst onto the scene in what was the first wave of the professional ultra athlete, running for the mighty Salomon team. Going from spending weeks travelling around Europe partying and sleeping in the back of a station wagon to pulling on the white strip and racing for a European giant, Anna was catapulted into the media at the same time as other famous names such as Anton Krupicka, Scott Jurek,Geoff Roes, Kilian Jornet, and Tina Forsberg. Wait, we're gushing again. It's been a few years and we find Anna back in Dunedin with partner Braz and their daughter Skylar – enjoying the challenges of life, and reflecting openly on the privilege that whilst yes, things are tough at the moment (especially when you own a trail running tour company) at least bombs aren't raining down outside. We talk to Anna about the inevitable changes that parenthood brings and take a deep dive into coaching, training with little humans, and The Wild, the epic 100 mile race taking place in Queenstown in December. Anna Frost rules, ok? Enjoy! Geoff Roes was raised in Cleveland, New York and excelled in track and cross country at Paul V. Moore High School in Central Square, NY. He competed in cross-country at Syracuse University for one year before becoming injured. Roes took a hiatus from competitive running until trying his hand at ultra marathon running in 2006 when he won his first event, the Little Susitna 50K. In 2007, he set a course record in the process of winning the Susitna 100 miler. In 2010 Roes won the American River 50 Mile Endurance Run. Roes also won the 2010 Western States Endurance Run in a record time of 15:07:04. Roes set the still-standing course record for the Wasatch 100 (a 100-mile race along the Wasatch Front range of the Rocky Mountains near Salt Lake City, UT) in 2009 with a time of 18:30:55, beating the previous course record by nearly one hour and five minutes. Roes now resides in Juneau, Alaska. (Reference wikipedia) First recorded in 2013 - published episode 28 of Talk Ultra. This interview goes back to 2012 and episode 12 of Talk Ultra. Timothy Olson had won the 39th annual Western States 100 race in the record time of 14:46:44, trimming the course record of 15:07:04, set by Geoff Roes two years earlier, by over twenty minutes. In this interview, we found out about the demons of Tim's life, drugs, alcohol and a road to ruin. Ultra-running quite literally saved his life… It still stands as one of my all-time favourite Talk Ultra interviews. First recorded in 2012. Kia Ora Whanau. Anna Frost is arguably the most successful trail and ultra running export New Zealand has produced and the person Eugene and Matt both had at the top of their “must talk to” lists from day one. Anna burst onto the scene in what was the first wave of the professional ultra athlete, running for the mighty Salomon team. Going from spending weeks travelling around Europe partying and sleeping in the back of a station wagon to pulling on the white strip and racing for a European giant, Anna was catapulted into the media at the same time as other famous names such as Anton Krupicka, Scott Jurek,Geoff Roes and others. International success came however with not an inconsiderable amount of challenge for Anna. Fast forward ten years and Anna is now running for Merrell and co owns Trail Run Adventures with her husband, which brings people to beautiful parts of the world for trail running trips. We spoke to Anna via phone from her home town of Dunedin, where she is enjoying a much welcomed rest and awaiting the arrival of the couple’s first baby. Anna talks candidly, openly, and movingly about her journey with running, the successes and costs, and her abiding love for the sport. This was a true highlight for us and we are thankful for having the opportunity to speak to one of the legends of our sport. Enjoy!

Geoff Roes is one of the best ultra trail runners to participate in this sport. He has won many races and set course record on many of the most difficult 100-mile races in the United States including: Susitna 100 CR Resurrection Pass 100 CR 2-time winner: Wasatch Front 100 Hurt 100 CR The Bear 100 Western States 100 CR Santa Barbara 100 CR by over 3-1/2 hours! He was captured in the JB Benna film, Unbreakable, when he pulled off one of the greatest athletic come backs of all time! Geoff elaborates on his recent article he wrote in Ultrarunning Magazine. He began having severe symptoms affecting nearly every system of his body and how he has tirelessly struggled to understand the cause and remedy. Although still not sure why or how this came upon him, he has come to peace with the joy of running and taking each day by day. Ultra Trail Running is distinctly different in culture and mental preparation than other running or endurance sports. Veteran Trail Ultra Runner, Bob Crowley, visits with the Nation about what is unique about this sports culture. Is there a difference between "doing" an ultra run and "being" an ultra runner? What are some of the tenets of the trail running culture? Are we losing the ultra trail running culture with the mass appeal and participation recently? How can we keep the culture? How does this culture helps us prepare mentally for the experiences that accompany a long trail race An interesting perspective from Geoff Roes in his article, "Ultrarunning is Dead" Join the Trail Animals Running Club "Race Course in Review" by Vasque Running Shoes Take the Tailwind Challenge at: Tailwind Nutrition Check out the cool headlamps made for trail running at Petzl
