Welcome to tonight's episode of Books at Bedtime, brought to you by the Anchored app. Tonight, we continue our gentle journey through H.G. Wells' science fiction masterpiece, The Time Machine, with Chapter 6: "The Sunset of Mankind". As the evening settles and the day's tension fades away, join us in the year 802,701 AD. In this chapter, our Time Traveller climbs to a lonely, moss-draped crest overlooking a silent, transformed Thames Valley. Underneath the warm, golden glow of a fading sunset, he contemplates a world completely free from toil, disease, and social struggle—a beautiful, ruinous paradise where humanity has conquered nature, but lost its restless edge. Let the rhythmic cadence of tonight's reading quiet your mind, slow your breathing, and guide you into a restful, restorative sleep.Cold Intro"A queer thing I soon discovered about my little hosts, and that was their lack of interest. They would come to me with eager cries of astonishment like children, but like children they would very soon stop examining me, and wander away after some other toy. It was odd, too, how speedily I came to disregard these little people ... I emerged from the great hall, and the scene was lit by a warm glow of the setting sun." Deep Sleep Time Chapters00:00 – "The Sunset of Mankind" Intro & Soothing Ambience 00:59 – Emerging into a Changed World: The Shifted Thames 02:14 – Exploring the Ruinous Splendor and Ancient Granite Labyrinths 03:21 – Speculations on Communism and the Vanishing of the English Cottage 04:48 – A World Free of Hardship: The Physical Resemblance of the Sexes 06:19 – The Mysterious Well under the Cupola 06:50 – Solitude on the Crest: Sinking into the Yellow Metal Seat 07:26 – A Wide Horizon View: The Golden, Purple, and Crimson Sunset 08:26 – The Earth as a Total Garden: Free from Weeds, Disease, and Toil 09:06 – Soft Musings: How Absolute Security Breeds Physical Feebleness 11:06 – The Ultimate Subjugation and Balance of Nature 12:47 – A Social Paradise: The Disappearance of Commerce and Traffic 14:16 – The Grindstone of Pain is Broken: Slipping into Contented Inactivity 16:56 – Gathering Dark: Closing Speculations and Sleep Transitions Relaxing Affirmations for SleepBefore the reading begins, take a slow, deep breath. Let these gentle insights anchor your mind into a state of total security:I step out of the rush of the world and into the calm of the evening. The struggle of the day is completely gone; I am safe, secure, and at peace. Like a quiet garden after the storm, my mind is still and settled. I release the need to strive, allowing myself to sink into contented rest. I am protected by a quiet landscape of peace as the darkness gently gathers. 3 Bedtime Insights for a Restful MindReflecting on the Traveller's peaceful twilight observations, carry these comforting thoughts into your dreams:After the Battle Comes Quiet: The Traveller notes that humanity's historical struggles ultimately paved the way for absolute stillness. Let go of today's efforts; your battles for the day are done, and it is time for your quiet reaction of rest. The Grindstone is Broken: We often keep our minds sharp and anxious on the "grindstone of necessity". In sleep, that grindstone is broken. You have no social or economic struggles to solve tonight. Surrender to the Sunset: Watch the flaming gold and horizontal bars of purple fade away in your mind's eye. Just as the old world effortlessly accepted the sunset, give yourself full permission to gracefully surrender to the gathering dark. Anchor Your EveningIf tonight's classic story helped quiet your thoughts and brought comfort to your evening, please take a brief moment to share this episode on your social media channels so others can find their evening sanctuary. ON ADVENTURE PODCAST | EPISODE 73 Episode 73: Running is Life with Aaron Saft As a species, we only do things if there is truly a reward on the other side. So when the reward is pain, struggle, suffering, and danger, what exactly keeps driving us back out the door? Aaron Saft has spent his life chasing that answer. A five-time ACC champion at NC State whose teams finished third at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, he traded the track for the trail, ran his first 100-miler in 2016, and has since become one of the most experienced ultrarunners in the Southeast. Today he coaches roughly 75 athletes full-time through his Running Is Life platform and podcast, a business he deliberately renamed from "MR Running Pains" because he believes running, done right, should bring as much joy as it does suffering. His résumé reads like a bucket list for the sport: the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning, the Bigfoot 200, Hardrock, Leadville, UTMB, and the Tor des Géants in the Italian Alps, where a fall, a head injury, and a watchful medic ended his race. He has finished a 100-miler while spiking a 100-degree fever, outrun a mother grizzly and her cubs in Canada, and learned the hard way when to push and when to stop. But ask Aaron why he does it and he won't point to a trophy. He'll point to the upside-down photo of his family pinned to his quad, the one he looks down at in the darkest miles to remember who he is suffering for. In this conversation, Josh and Aaron trace the many forms the "why" can take. They dig into presence, learning to run a hundred miles one mile at a time, and the moment an empty drop bag at Leadville taught Aaron everything he needed to know about the generosity of the trail community. They talk about the one question you never ask an ultrarunner, the evolution from chasing a place to simply chasing the finish line, why legacy is something children catch rather than something we teach, and how an abundance mindset shaped the coaching practice he built from the ground up. It is a conversation for every everyday explorer about doing the hard things that make life fuller, right now, not someday. In this episode of the Everyday Ultra Podcast, I sit down with one of the best examples of what it truly means to be an Everyday Ultra athlete — Evan Moody .Evan is a full-time professional, husband, father, and ultrarunner who has quietly built an incredible resume over the past few years — including finishing Grindstone 100 as his first 100 miler, racing Black Canyon 100K and Istria 110K, and most recently running a 21:30 100-mile PR at Javelina through near-perfect execution. But this conversation isn't just about results. We dig deep into:How Evan went from “someone who runs” to fully owning the identity of being an athleteWhy trusting the process is one of the hardest — and most important — skills in ultrarunningWhat it actually takes to execute a great 100-mile race (nutrition, pacing, aid station discipline, mindset)How friendly rivalry can become powerful motivationWhy accountability matters more than motivationLessons learned from injury, patience, and long-term consistencyHow to plan a meaningful race calendar instead of throwing darts at UltraSignupEvan's next big challenge: a Catskills 35-Peak FKT attempt and Cocodona 250This episode is a masterclass in execution, patience, and long-term development — and a reminder that you don't have to blow up your life to chase big ultrarunning goals. If you've ever struggled with doubt mid-training block, questioned your fitness, or wondered whether trusting the process is actually worth it — this episode is for you.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Today on the podcast we have one of the most amazing people in the Edmonton comedy scene, Alex Jocko. Alex is not your typical sullen brooding comedian, she is a proud mother and a breathe of fresh air to any room she walks in. Her bubbly personality has always made her one of my favourite people to talk to and the effort she puts into running amazing shows across the city gives us endless fodder for conversation. Not only does she help run one of the longest running and most successful open mics in Canada at the Black Dog Freehouse but she also runs awesome shows at the Grindstone theatre every week! I love when comics give back to the community with shows and I love it even more when they put real care into them like Alex does. Come hear how she manages to balance running her own company, running shows, doing stand-up and being an amazing mother. Then go give her a follow on instagram @alexjockojokes and let her know how much you loved her episode!

When the most wanted man in America surfaces in a small Kentucky town, his violent history ― and a bloodthirsty mob seeking vengeance and a king's ransom ― soon follow. As brothers face off against one another and bullets tear the town to shreds, this lightning-fast gunslinger makes his enemies pay the ultimate price for their greed. Academy Award® winner Nicolas Cage, Stephen Dorff, and Heather Graham star in this action-packed Western-thriller about true justice in the Wild West. DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT - BRIAN SKIBA The Western genre has always carried a timeless allure—tales of justice, revenge, and survival in the face of lawlessness. With Gunslingers, I wanted to create a film that not only honors the great Westerns that came before but also brings something fresh and bold to the table. This film is about outlaws, redemption, and the harsh reality of a world where the line between good and evil is razor-thin. Bringing Gunslingers to life has been a journey of passion and perseverance, a two-year odyssey filled with challenges and triumphs. At its core, this is a story about a wanted man who stumbles upon a hidden town—a sanctuary for criminals—only to realize that salvation comes at a cost. When a relentless posse arrives to collect on the town's entire population, the stage is set for an explosive battle where survival is the only currency that matters. With an extraordinary cast led by Stephen Dorff, Heather Graham, and Nicolas Cage, we've crafted a world that feels gritty, raw, and authentically Western. Their performances bring depth and intensity to the story, breathing life into characters who exist in a world where justice is often a matter of who draws first. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of Grindstone executive Barry Brooker and my producing partner/star, Laurie Love, whose dedication helped shape this film into what it is today. Gunslingers is more than just a Western—it's a film about the choices we make when the odds are against us. It's a tribute to the spirit of those who refuse to back down, who fight for their survival, no matter the cost. For fans of the genre, this is a must-watch, and I can't wait for audiences to experience the world we've built. Stay connected with me here.

I met Katti Jackson at The Naturalist, where she took 2nd female overall. Since then, I have seen her dominate in the ultras she has faced since that time. Katti didn't even start running ultras until 2022 with Table Rock, and in 2023 she won the Heartbreaker 55k, then won the Heartbreaker 50 miler the next year. So, like anyone else would do (ha!), she wanted to try her hand at the 100 mile distance. She chose Grindstone 100 for her first attempt, and not only did she finish, but she finished first overall! Now that is a good result for your first 100! Of course, in our conversation, she walks me through the details of her experience at Grindstone which I completely soaked up. We also spoke of her past...how she started running, some of the struggles she faced along the way, discovering the trails, and ultimately why she tried the ultra distance. On this week's episode, Jake continues a four-part Endurance series on becoming a better endurance professional by doing hard things. In this episode, Jake reflects on lessons from his recent experience of running the Grindstone 100 ultramarathon. Jake applies the lessons taught while “grinding” to business, the practice of law and life. 1. The hardest thing that's ever happened to you is the hardest thing that's ever happened to you. Put your difficult circumstances into perspective. 2. Level up the competition. Look for a group of worthy rivals. 3. Belief precedes ability. If you plan to accomplish big goals, your confidence in achievement must come before you realize the dream. 4. 2-point conversion for the W versus kicking the extra point to tie. If you want to win, there are times that you need to take calculated risks in order to achieve victory. 5. Don't overbook yourself or your team. If you have a monumental task, don't go into it physically taxed or mentally burnt out. 6. The power of positivity. Speak life into your mind and into the world. 7. The power of prayer. Gratitude and a focus on others in times of trial is a recipe for success. 8. Keep moving forward. If you are stuck in a difficult situation, the way out is movement. If you stay where you are your circumstances will not improve. 9. Relish the gnarly. If you go searching for a challenge, be prepared for the moment when you have your back against the proverbial wall. 10. Soak in beautiful moments. Don't miss out on the beauty that life has to offer because you are focused on the pain. 11. Bonus: Develop a championship routine. “You shouldn't wait until you're a champion to act like one.” – Sally McRae

Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes!Anton Krupicka is back on the podcast! Few athletes in ultrarunning generate as much excitement as Anton, and he's returned with a bang—recently setting a fastest known time on the iconic LA Freeway route and securing second place finish at the Grindstone 100 this past weekend.Beyond his impressive athletic achievements, which notably helped shape the ultrarunning culture in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Anton is a thoughtful and generous conversationalist. He shares plenty of insights in this episode. While the FKT and race results provide a backdrop, we also dive deeper into nostalgic ultrarunning memories (his friendships with Scott Jurek, Geoff Roes, and Kyle Skaggs), engaging discussions on philosophy (athlete personalities and bike culture), current events (Leadville 100), and his aspirations (UTMB and Hardrock goals). The time has come for Erin to go celebrate her training on the Grindstone 50k course! Her calf woes are over and the training is in the bank. We started the call with a little quiz about her race and she nails it. We hope you enjoy the show!
Erin is experiencing the ups and downs of training as we get ever so closer to her first ultra. On the show today she shares her advneture on the Aqua Blaze race. A rowing and running adventure race. She also deals with her first real setback in the form of a knotted up calf for a few days. She seems to be on the mend though so for now, it's taper and get the mind right for the Grindstone 50k!
Erin had the chance to get out and run a part of the course for the Grindstone 50k to see how technical the trails were. School is back in session so a new training schedule had to emerge for the last 7 weeks of training. The humidity and heat are still wreaking havoc. Coach Lindsay helps coach her through some niggles and continue to prep for the big effort in September!
Erin is training for her first ultra at the Grindstone 50k coming in September. Today her coach talks about her longer efforts and early aid station strategy to start thinking about it while she fuels for her current efforts. We talk about poles and how to implement in the training. Enjoy the show

Erin and her coach Lindsay sit down with Scott to talk about the first few weeks of training for her first 50k at the Grindstone 50k. Humid days, ticks, and other random things that come up in the heat of summer made the conversation. We hope you enjoy!
We have the pleasure of introducing Erin to the world. She is an educator that grew up on a family farm not too far from Washington D.C. Today, we just get to know her as we will be talking lots of running in the coming months. We hope you enjoy!
Hellbender 100 didn't go as planned. This episode goes into why. I also discuss my essay for my application for Badwater 135 (actual letter is below). Here's my Post from Facebook after Hellbender: I've learned something over the 3 decades I've been running. When we line up for a race, no matter how much we've trained and prepared, the race and life in general owes us nothing. The reality is we owe running & life a tremendous amount for what it does for & to us! Running and many coaches, friends, family members, and mentors have transformed me to find my current mindset. A DNF does not diminish or define who I am or what I can accomplish. It makes me take a deeper dive into a. What happened? b. What can I do better? & c. How can I train smarter (not necessarily harder)? It also makes me reflect upon life, the choices I make, my priorities, and what I'm doing to make this world a little better. Running Is Life is a mantra. I live it, I breathe it, and I grasp to understand and apply it on a daily basis. Keep moving forward my friends! Essay for Badwater 135: It's hard to create a story that's still in progress! It's also tough to tell a story that's pretty darn common. Sure, I've done and experienced some amazing things in my life, but to be honest, so have many others. So I had to ask myself, what separates me from everyone else? Let me go back to 2016, and humor me for a moment with a flashback. In said year, I was running Dr David Horton's now defunct Beast Series. I had completed 3 50k's by April and the remainder of my calendar for that year was as follows: June - Cayuga 50-miler & the Manitou's Revenge 50-miler July - Canadian Death Race 125k Oct. - Grindstone 100-miler Nov. - Mountain Massochist 50-miler Dec. - Hellgate 100k A Daunting & challenging schedule with the hope of winning both the Lynchburg Ultra Series & the Beast Series (which I did). But that's only part of the 2016 story. In the midst of all of this, I was in The Runner's World Magazine Cover Contest. A finalist no less. A panel of judges had selected 5 male & 5 female contestants for the honor of being the winner of this contest and having their picture on the front of the magazine. I know for some, print media is dead, but I grew up with this magazine and eagerly read every article. To be a finalist for this was a dream come true! So how did I get to that point? Everything about my running stems from love. With and through running, I can do so much more than just go for a run. I can take an individual sport, and at times selfish activity, and make it about others. I created races that raised money for nonprofit organizations, I donated & sponsored races that did the same. I became a coach and mentor to younger and older runners. The point being is I tried to share my love for running and life with others so that they might do the same. To give the idea that life is about others and the change we can make and impact we can have when we put others first and use our talents and abilities to make a difference. As the internet will show, I didn't win, but I experienced something that changed my life and way of thinking. I met some truly amazing friends that have much more amazing stories than my own. And that's what makes running so amazing. Each race we run has a limited number of runners. Those runners all have stories of how that got to that starting line. Badwater has shown this each year it's run. Since the Runner's World Contest, my professional life has gone from Running Store owner and race director to a running coach and podcaster. It took me a number of years to find a name for my brand that felt suitable for who I am, what I do, and what I represent. It wasn't until I watched Ted Lasso and saw the joy the character Danny Rojas exhibited for life and fútbol that I understood and found a name that resonated with me… “Running is Life”! That simple phrase/name struck a cord so deep that it's hard to express how much it reflects my love for it and how it affects my thoughts, actions, and deeds. How such a simple few words can say everything. Running is Life! My story may not be the most compelling, but instead of remaining an individual, I've become part of the community. I serve that community with my experience. As I try to reach each finish line, I know that I will help countless others do the same by learning from my own experiences. All I need is the opportunities to continue to grow, to learn, and to evolve. I believe Badwater is one of those experiences that will do so! As I mentioned earlier, my story is incomplete. Will one of those blank chapters be filled with pages about the Badwater 135? Again, it's up to a committee to decide what's added to my story. In races, we don't deserve anything but the experience of what the day gives us. All we ask is for that opportunity to see what that day has in store for us. I know running Badwater is in part for my own sake, but I realize, and I hope I've conveyed, that it will impact many other lives in the process and aftermath as well. I sincerely appreciate your time & consideration! I hope to see you in 2025!
