It wasn't a great weekend for fires around the state -- several fires popped up and even forced evacuations. In the hills above Salt Lake City, residents are urged to be on alert and ready to go at a moment's notice should the Bonneville Fire shift directions. But in Juab County, the entire town of Eureka remains under a mandatory evacuation thanks to the 24,000+ acre Iron Fire. No buildings burned at this point, but Highway 6 remains closed in the area. Utah Firewatch -- Inside Sources gets updates on those two fires from wildfire PIOs Sierra Hellstrom and Toby Weed. KSL Meteorologist Matt Johnson joins to talk about the forecast and the current air quality around the Wasatch Front. Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter joins to talk about the things homeowners can do to best prepare for what's to be a rough fire season.

Is Cox trying to replace Pride Month? On June 4th the Department of Defense made some changes to the recognized list of religions. Send us Fan MailYour backyard peak can be more than a workout, it can be a measuring stick for an entire community. We're joined by Kelsey Quinn from La Sportiva marketing plus athletes Anton Krupicka, Jason Dorias, and Tom Goth to unpack the La Sportiva Green Mountain and Grandeur Peak Challenge, running May 15 through June 15. The goal is simple and addictive: chase the fastest uphill time, stack the most summits, or just get in the game and let the mountain sharpen you. We get into why Green Mountain in Boulder has become a daily ritual for so many trail runners, from its proximity to town to the sheer number of ways you can climb it. Anton shares the kind of long-view perspective only years of repeats can create: how the trail has rerouted over time, how pre-Strava “ghost times” still shape the lore, and why breaking 30 minutes remains a real marker in mountain running. Then we shift to Grandeur Peak in Salt Lake City, a steep, clean effort that functions like a perfect vertical kilometer and a favorite training tool for ski mountaineers. Tom and Jason talk routes, strategy, and the local history of FKTs and early Strava rivalries, including why the West Grandeur line is such a magnet for uphill specialists and why poles often win the day. We also cover the prizes, including $750 cash for the fastest man and woman, awards for the most completions, and raffle entries for anyone who participates. If you're near Boulder or the Wasatch Front, this is your excuse to learn the route, test your pacing, and add your name to the story. Subscribe, share this with a training partner, and leave a review if you want more conversations like this.Details For Grandeur You have from May15 to June15 to complete the Grandeur Peak West Climb segment. The fastest single ascent (trailhead → summit) for both Male & Female during this timeframe will receive $750 cash each! The most verified summits during event window (Top 3 Most Completions) during this timeframe will receive $500 | $350 | $150 each!Every registered participant will be entered for a chance to win a pair of La Sportiva Mountain Running shoes (5 total) + other prizes!Dates:The challenge runs from May 15 to June 15, 2026.Details for Green The Challenge:You have from May15 to June15 to complete the Green Mountain via Amphitheater/Saddle Rock/Greenman Trail segment. The fastest single ascent (trailhead → summit) for both Male & Female during this timeframe will receive $750 cash each! The most verified summits during event window (Top 3 Most Completions) during this timeframe will receive $500 | $350 | $150 each!Every registered participant will be entered for a chance to win a pair of La Sportiva Mountain Running shoes (5 total) + other prizes!Dates:The challenge runs from May 15 to June 15, 2026.To Sign up  for the Green Mountain Challenge - >  RegisterTo Sign up for the Grandeur Peak Challenge -> RegisterFollow Anton Krupicka on IG - @antonkrupickaFollow Jason Dorias on IG - @jasondoriasFollow Tom Goth on IG - @tomgothUse code SteepStuff for 20% your cart on Sidas.usFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podFollow Sidas USA on IG - @sidas_usa

This is Derek Miller, Speaking on Business. For the past eight years, Wasatch Security Awareness has partnered with organizations across the Wasatch Front, helping them better understand cybersecurity risks and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Owner, Matt Groves, joins us with more. Matt Groves: Most business risk today has very little to do with technology, and everything to do with people. At Wasatch Security Awareness, that's exactly where we focus — because most problems don't start with broken systems, they start with the everyday choices people make at work. That's why we provide customized cybersecurity testing and live training. Real conversations with real people, not just another video everyone clicks through. When people can ask questions and see how threats show up in their day-to-day work, the lessons stick and behavior starts to change. We also help organizations make sense of artificial intelligence. Our AI literacy training helps teams safely implement AI into the workflows they already use — saving time, improving efficiency and supporting better decisions. For Utah businesses, awareness isn't just about reducing risk — it's about building stronger, more resilient teams. The organizations that thrive tomorrow will be the ones who prepare their people today. Send us a textI'm really excited to bring you this episode's guest. When I began ultramarathoning several decades ago, the only way I could learn about races and people in that space was through a black-and-white magazine delivered to my mailbox called Ultrarunning. It had pages and pages of mundane rows of race results that still held fascination for me. Plus stories about races in exotic-sounding places like Auburn, Calif. and where I first heard about this crazy race called the Barkley Marathons that at that time no one had ever finished, and long before Netflix, no one else but me and a few others had heard of. I also read about people who became my first idols in the sport like Marshall Ulrich and Roy Pirrung, who I've had the great honor to chat with both on this podcast and in-person. But one who absolutely left me in awe who I never got to meet was Ann Trason, who I got to see – briefly – when she zoomed past me on Hope Pass in the Leadville Trail 100 in the 90s. Ann won the Western States 100 a mind-boggling 14 times, twice less than two weeks after winning the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Western States is considered the most prestigious 100-miler in the US, and Ann, who in 1994 set a course record of 17:37:51, now lives close to the 99-mile mark of the course. Comrades is the oldest ultramarathon in the world, having begun right after WW1, and is roughly 55 miles, and is so esteemed that the entire country basically shuts down to watch it. Very few Americans have ever won it. Ann set the Leadville course record of 18:06:24 in 1994 that was only broken this past year by Anne Flower. She finished second, not just among women, but overall. In 1996, she not only completed the Grand Slam of 100-milers – Western States, Leadville, Vermont, and Wasatch Front – but she won them all. Ann set 20 world records, including for 50 miles in 5:40:18 and 100K in 7:00:47. All the way back in 1987, Ann became a Nike-sponsored athlete when women's sports hadn't taken hold like they have today, and ultramarathoning hadn't achieved any of the attention and popularity it now has. Ann retired from ultramarathoning in the 2000s due to injuries and the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, which has ravaged her body. As a result of her many accomplishments, as well as her continuing contributions to the sport as a race director, coach, writer, supporter, and much more, she was inducted into the Ultrarunning Hall of Fame in 2020. After a long time out of the spotlight, Ann arrived at an Arizona race called Across the Years, which begins three days before New Year's and finishes three days after it, just wanting to engage with the ultrarunning community in her joyous way, and push her walker – with all of its lights and decorations – for some laps around the 1.41-mile looped course. I have spoken with several people who told me how delighted they were to get to chat with Ann out there, and in the end, one of the event's highlights was when she completed 100 miles and earned a buckle – all while pushing that walker. With such a long, colorful career, you can imagine that Ann and I cover a lot of ground in this very fun chat, including her talking with Nelson Mandela after she won Comrades, swapping hats with the Jester, the Grateful Dead, being vegetarian and a race director, including the best way to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at races, long-lost Nike shoe models, the fun of reading that old Ultrarunning magazine, her inspirations in the sport and those who have followed her, her relationship with her parents, and about the joy and gratitude she has for life and the running community.Ann TrasonInstagram @ann_trasonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman

Understanding what helps Utah women of color build a sense of belonging shows us not only where the state is progressing, but where meaningful work still needs to be done. Community and Economic Development Director, Meg Padjen, joins us with more. Meg Padjen: The Wasatch Front Regional Council serves communities along the Wasatch Front by facilitating planning for transportation, land use and economic development. That's why Wasatch Front Regional Council collaborates with cities and stakeholders to produce the Wasatch Choice Vision – our shared plan for the future. Episode Intro:A couple years ago, a Utah statewide ballot initiative called Clean the Darn Air was proposed to tackle the persistent air pollution which Wasatch Front residents deal with every year.  The proposal was to tax the things that cause the pollution -- the carbon emissions – by levying a 10 cents per gallon tax on gasoline purchases and a penny per kilowatt for electricity.  From this tax, Utah residents could eliminate an unpopular state sales tax on grocery store food, while also paying for various efforts to clean up the air.Well, before the 2024 election cycle the initiative did not pass. The organizers did not gather the needed number of signatures.  But the effort did yield a lot of information about how Utah voters, both Democrats and Republicans, feel about such big proposals to address air pollution and climate change, and it showed what kinds of issues – if packaged with the right balance – a majority of Utah voters could actually support.I spoke recently with Katelyn Tenney, a PhD student at the University of Wyoming, and Therese Cavlovic, Professor of Economics at Weber State University, who together published a study which examines how Utahns value different ways of spending carbon tax revenues, and the kinds of policies that might actually gain broad political appeal in the state.Interview Summary:Katelyn Tenney, a PhD student at the University of Wyoming, and Therese Cavlovic, Professor of Economics at Weber State University, talk about their Utah-focused study on carbon tax design using a discrete choice experiment to test how residents value different ways of spending carbon tax revenues. Findings show strong, bipartisan support for revenue uses that offset regressive impacts—especially eliminating the grocery sales tax—and meaningful support for environmental earmarks, with Democrats prioritizing clean-air benefits. The researchers emphasize that market-based, locally controlled carbon pricing paired with fair, transparent revenue uses could gain broad political appeal in Utah.Episode webpage:wilkescenter.utah.edu/podcast/33-how-utahns-could-support-a-tax-on-carbon-emissions/

Throwback  Title: Mule Deer Hunting on the Wasatch Front with Kip Fowler   Show Notes: A Southern Utah native, Kip now lives and hunts in Northern Utah, along the Wasatch Front. Backpacking bow hunting in the high country is one of his specialties, and he shares some of his advice for how to improve your hunting game.   Kip was always worried about becoming too reliant on technology, but there came a point when he realized that it was actually holding him back and it cost him a prize deer. That's when he started to look for tools that would make the hunt easier, and he shares some of his adaptations.   It's so easy in bowhunting to get discouraged, especially when you have moments where you get so close, but then something goes wrong. “Really successful bowhunters are constantly trying to eliminate the things that could go wrong”, says Kip. And they stick with it.   A lot of bowhunters will spend tons of time practicing their shot, testing their equipment, and planning their hunt. But they'll forget to try out the food they're going to eat ahead of time, and that can lead to some seriously unpleasant surprises out in the backcountry. Don't forget to test your food, and your body's reaction, before you head out.   Pictures can help you remember a hunt, but they don't tell everything. Kip and I both have journaled some about our hunts, and the details we recorded are so much different and more helpful than just looking at pictures.   If you loved this podcast, don't keep us a secret. Like us, share us, and leave us a review so that we can keep bringing you hunting stories from some of the greatest experts in the backcountry.   What's Inside: When water sources and feed sources are an important part of the hunt. Where is it easier to hunt mule deer: the desert or the high country? Why mental fortitude is going to help you on the hunt. How nail polish, sharpies, and other hacks can help you make small improvements.     Mentioned in this Episode: Days in the Wild on itunes Days in the Wild on Podbean Phoenix Shooting Bags   Short Description: As a lifelong bowhunter, Kip Fowler has some tips to take your bowhunting to the next level. In addition to telling some great hunting stories, Kip focuses on some of the smaller details today that can add up and make your bowhunting experience more successful and enjoyable.   Tags: Utah hunting, mule deer hunting, hunting on the Wasatch Front, improve your bowhunting, bowhunting technology, bowhunting tips and tricks, bowhunting hacks

She joins us to go in-depth on House Bill 312: Criminal Justice Amendments.    On the Hill 2025: Potential path to creating a new county  It’s been more than 100 years since Utah got a new county – the last time was in 1918 with the establishment of Daggett County. But as Utah’s population grows – especially along the Wasatch Front – it's brought up questions about county creation. Currently, Utah has 29 counties. Could it get to an even 30? State Rep. Jordan Teuscher joins us to discuss a bill he’s running about this topic.    On the Hill 2025: Changes to property taxes  Property taxes -- they’re super important but can also be kind of boring and complicated. But property taxes affect just about anyone, including those who don’t own their property. State Senator Dan McCay joins Inside Sources to talk about a bill he’s working on that would make some changes to property taxes, including the addition of a few tax programs residents could opt into.    Pushback on recent DOGE decisions, including Musk’s email to federal workers and layoffs  The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) made waves this weekend when an email went out to federal workers asking for them to give five bullet points of what they did last week. Elon Musk – writing on X – said those who don’t respond will be fired. Does he have authority to do this? At the same time, members of Congress are speaking out against the way the layoffs are going. The Inside Sources hosts discuss what DOGE is doing and whether or not they agree with the decisions.    On the Hill 2025: What’s left to accomplish in the last 9 days of the session?  One thing we like to do when we’re on Capitol Hill is discuss various issues and bills with a Democrat and a Republican. Unfortunately, our regular Republican for this segment couldn’t join us today, so we chat with our regular Democrat instead! State Representative Andrew Stoddard gives a take on the final few days of the session and what he still wants to do before the session ends.    Ukrainian president says he’d resign if it meant peace  Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he would be willing to resign his office if it meant a lasting peace for Ukraine. As part of this – however – he says NATO membership for the country would need to be on the table. At the same time, the United States has joined Russia in voting against a UN resolution about the war. Adam and Erin finish the show with updates on Ukraine.

This was a pretty controversial bill – one of the first this legislative session – and had several substitutes. In the end, however, those all failed and the original bill was passed. Why? The Inside Sources hosts share their thoughts.    On the Hill 2025: Updates on legislation to reinvest funds in higher education  One widely discussed bill on Capitol Hill this legislative session would change how higher education funds are distributed to certain institutions and programs. It’s a kind of reinvestment – moving funds to more impactful programs – and is part of the House Majority’s goals of improving higher education.  State Representative Karen Peterson joins to share updates on HB265 and discuss the broader state of education in Utah.     On the Hill 2025: Bill addressing the use of artificial intelligence in education  As artificial intelligence becomes easier to access, it’s called into question its role in things like education: what's the appropriate use of AI? Utah’s been leading the charge on AI legislation and rules – broadly and in other sectors – and now there’s a bill that would address AI in schools. State Representative Ariel Defay joins Inside Sources at the State Capitol to talk more about HB168.    On the Hill 2025: Additional changes to public education laws  Our special coverage of Utah’s Legislative Session continues with a look at a bill that would make several changes to public education laws. One of President Trump’s first executive orders eliminated DEI offices in the government, but it looks like DOGE might take that a step further, focusing on employees in offices that protect equal rights. The Inside Sources hosts discuss the latest with DOGE.    On the Hill 2025: Pulse check on the state of politics in Utah  One segment we’ve done a few times on this show involves a group discussion with both a Republican and a Democratic member of the state legislature. It’s a good way to hear different sides of things, while also showing a bit of the camaraderie that exists among Utah lawmakers even when they don’t agree. State Rep. Casey Snider and State Rep. Andrew Stoddard join the conversation on Inside Sources.    U.S. and Russian delegations make plans for peace in Ukraine... without Ukraine  Peace talks today between the United States and Russia as the two countries work to come to an agreement over Ukraine. Notably absent from the talks... Ukraine itself. The discussions have prompted concern from some of our allies, including several European countries and Ukraine itself. The welcoming sound of bells has heralded celebration and worship for centuries of Christian worshippers. This includes the music of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square since its pioneering start in 1847. In 2005, the inclusion of a handbell ensemble was officially organized under the auspices of the choir; the handbell group has evolved to 32 musicians who enhance choir concerts and recordings, as well as perform two handbell concerts each year.  From its inception, LeAnna Willmore served as associate conductor until she was named director in June 2011, until her final concert in June 2024. Willmore holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Utah, has served in many state and national music leadership positions, and, importantly, fostered a love for music as a choir teacher for decades of students across Utah’s Wasatch Front. She joins this episode of the Church News podcast to discuss the importance of music in worship and daily life. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and executive editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.
