Friends come in many forms. When you go through a challenging time in your life, you can more easily identify your friendships for what they truly are. Today, we’re talking about real-deal gal pals, like the girlfriend who texts you “Congrats!” at good news and shows up on your doorstep with a bottle of wine and an entire pallet of tissue at bad news. In our busy lives, keeping up with one another can be complicated and, at times, burdensome, but where would we be without our girl allies? The post Elva Carri: She’s Got Your New Girl Crew appeared first on On The Dot Woman.
Catherine is here today with Aine Mulloy. Aine Mulloy has a background in the humanities and digital technologies with an MA in Literature and Publishing, and a postgraduate in Digital Marketing. She initially worked with a leading publishing company before making the move to GirlCrew as co-founder. GirlCrew is a platform for women to make new friends. Not keen on going to a concert solo? Find a friend with GirlCrew. Want to book a vacation but your friends are all coupled up? Find a group of awesome girls to travel with at GirlCrew. Whatever you can dream up, you can do with the GirlCrew. GirlCrew began one Friday night, when Elva Carri really wanted to go out dancing, but had no one to go out with. All her friends were either too busy or tired. Believing there had to be other women in the same position, she put a call out for some platonic dancing buddies on Tinder. She had no idea she would quickly garner more than 100 enthusiastic matches. She added everyone to a secret Facebook group in Dublin, where she was based, and voila GirlCrew was born. Having gained lots of new friends, and a jam-packed social calendar, Elva was going to need help. She teamed up with Aine and Pamela, where the three co-founders began growing GirlCrew groups in cities all over the world. There were a lot of late nights in the early days, but spaghetti bolognese got the trio through everything. GirlCrew - it's a global online platform and app that helps women make new friends, wherever they are in the world. It all started when a young woman, left alone due to coupled-up friends, needed someone to go to a concert with. A short note posted online, in search of a buddy, turned into GirlCrew. It has since saved women from bad dates, helped people overcome challenges at work and even sourced witnesses for weddings. Meet its co-founders, yes co-founders, because three heads are better than one. Margaret E Ward talks to Elva Carri, Aine Mulloy and Pamela Newenham who reveal their unlikely paths to entrepreneurship, which involved making and selling draught excluders and selling raffle tickets for a box of chocolates. Listen to three inspiring women talk about taking on Mark Zuckerberg and the world, one meet-up at a time. They discuss their strategies, teamwork and making big business decisions over social media.
This week we have a very special Spotlight on Sport, current World Record Marathon holder Paula Radcliffe discusses career highlights, doping in sport and retirement goals. Niamh is also joined in studio by funny woman Alison Spittle and GirlCrew co-founder Aine Mulloy to talk ouija boards, boomerang generations and getting sacked! Don't miss it...

Pamela Newenham, one of the three founders of GirlCrew, tells us how a secret Facebook group for women to make friends has turned into a platform with over 100,000 members across the world. We discuss the power of networking, meeting Mark Zuckerberg and their move to Silicon Valley. The GirlCrew App Hootenanny is happening from the 17th - 20th August, with 19 events over 4 days, including tech talks, brunch, parties and speakers including Microsoft's MD Cathriona Hallahan and much more! Find out more by clicking here Key takeaways [1:56] How not being able to find people to go on a girls night out dancing resulted in hacking Tinder and forming a secret Facebook group. How founders Elva Carri, Aine Mulloy and Pamela Newenham came together. [4:34] Pamela's journey from being a journalist interviewing entrepreneurs to becoming one. [7:05] How having defined roles means they work well together as a team. They have specific areas they specialise in and there is no overlap which helps to keep things harmonious. [9:40] The challenges they came across including having no experience in tech or coding and wanted to bring out an app. Having no experience hiring was also challenging, it was harder than they thought to hire developer. [12:25] High points have included being selected, from 220 entrants, to represent Europe at the SXSW festival in Texas. GirlCrew was filmed by Facebook as one of their success stories. They met Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg. Yes, he was wearing a grey t-shirt! [17:30] Pamela's advice around growing and scaling a company would be to talk to people who have already done it. Trust your own gut instinct when you get conflicting advice. If you’re a tech startup, go to Silicon Valley [19:04] What helps make Silicon Valley a great place to do business and grow is that everyone is keen to help, to put you in touch with people and introduce you. Although soon moving there, GirlCrew will always keep a development team in Ireland. [22:40] Everything is about networking and talking to people. Real connections are made offline whether friendships or professional networks. Girlcrew are all about meeting people offline and making real friendships. It has been all change in the Irish agri-food sector these past weeks. Poor results at bakery giant Aryzta led to the departure of CEO Owen Killian and his team, while this week saw Kerry and Glanbia posting expectation-beating profits and revealing news about their future plans. To analyse the news we talk to Joe Gill of Goodbody Stockbrokers and our own Joe Brennan who has been covering the stories. In part two we talk to Pamela Newenham, formerly of this parish but now departing for San Francisco to represent Irish social-tech start-up GirlCrew, which she co-founded. Hosted on Acast.
