Nathan MacKinnon is heading into the 2022-2023 season on the last year of the most team-friendly contract in sports. We all know a big pay increase is heading his way but now Adrian Dater is reporting MacKinnon is looking to become the highest paid player in the league. His timing could not be better as the league's salary cap is expected to increase significantly after this coming season. So a record-breaking deal is not out of the question. As for another Avalanche player looking for a his pay day, Nazem Kadri might have found it with the New York Islanders. Rumore is the two sides are finalizing a 7 year $7 million AAV contract. If that is indeed the final amount, why did the Avs not want to go that high for Kadri? Is it the dollar amount, the term, or both? They did it. They really did it. The Colorado Avalanche had one mission at the beginning of the season. It wasn't to win the Presidents' Trophy, it wasn't to get out of the 2nd round of the playoffs, it wasn't for Gabriel Landeskog's hair to look like Fabio flying in the breeze. It was to win the Stanly Cup. And on June 26th, 2022 the Avalanche did just that. The turnaround this team had after the horrible 2016-2017 season is something teams will look at as a blueprint to how to go from bottom of the standings to pinnacle of your sport. The hard work and dedication to their coach and belief that he was the right man for the job paid off. And to do it, they needed to take down the two time defending champions in the Tampa Bay Lightning. In what will go down as one of the best teams in franchise history, and one of the best playoff runs ever, the 2021-2022 Colorado Avalanche will be engraved on the best trophy in sports forever. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals Last Night Colorado Avalanche 2, Tampa Bay Lightning 1                    (COL Wins 4-2) Avalanche 2, Lightning 1 – Avalanche dethrone Lightning to win Stanley Cup for 3rd time The Colorado Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup after dethroning the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning. The Avalanche beat the Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final behind a goal and an assist from Nathan MacKinnon and the cup clinching goal from Artturi Lehkonen. Tampa Bay fell two victories short of becoming the NHL's first three-peat champion since the early 1980s New York Islanders dynasty. Colorado's core led by MacKinnon, captain Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen and longest-tenured player Erik Johnson finally got the job done after years of playoff disappointments. It's the franchise's third championship and first since 2001. Colorado Defenseman Cale Makar, who won the Norris Trophy, also wins the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup playoffs. He's only the third player to do that and first since Nicklas Lidstrom won both in 2002 for the Detroit Red Wings. NHL – Daly hands Stanley Cup to Avalanche in Bettman's absence NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly presented the Stanley Cup to Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog in Commissioner Gary Bettman's absence. Bettman previously tested positive for the coronavirus and was unable to produce enough negative results to get back to the series in time. It's the first time someone other than Bettman has handed out the Cup and Conn Smythe trophy since Bettman became commissioner in the 1993 season. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Arizona Diamondbacks 11, Detroit Tigers 7 Chicago White Sox 4, Baltimore Orioles 3 Chicago Cubs 6, St. Louis Cardinals 5 – 10 Diamondback 11, Tigers 7 – Varsho, Smith help drive Arizona's 11-7 win over Detroit Daulton Varsho hit a three-run homer, Pavin Smith had a career-high four hits and three RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks avoided a series sweep with a 11-7 win over the Detroit Tigers. David Peralta also had three hits for Arizona, which snapped a five-game losing streak. Varsho's homer was his 10th of the season, and came in a five-run sixth inning for Arizona. Former American League Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel made his debut for the Diamondbacks and gave up six hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Reliever J.B. Wendelken (2-1) got the win for Arizona. Detroit starter Beau Brieske allowed five hits and five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. Eric Haase homered and had three RBIs for Detroit. White Sox 4, Orioles 3 – Cease strikes out 13, White Sox hold off Orioles 4-3 Dylan Cease struck out a career-high 13 over seven innings, Gavin Sheets homered and the Chicago White Sox avoided a four-game sweep, hanging on to beat Baltimore 4-3 after the Orioles scored twice in the ninth inning. The Orioles, aided by two errors by first baseman José Abreu, loaded the bases against Kendall Graveman with none out before Jonathan Araúz lined an RBI single. After pinch hitter Rougned Odor struck out, Cedric Mullins cut it to 4-3 with a sacrifice fly. Graveman struck out Trey Mancini, and the White Sox came away with the win after losing four straight. Cubs 6, Cardinals 5 – F/10 – Cubs overcome 5-run deficit to beat Cards 6-5, Flaherty hurt Willson Contreras hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning to drive in his third run of the game, and the Chicago Cubs overcame a five-run deficit to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5. St. Louis led 5-0 but starter Jack Flaherty left after two innings because of right shoulder tightness, and the Cubs tied the score with a five-run fourth. The Cardinals have lost three of their last four games and seven of their last 10. Contreras hit a tying two-run single in the fourth and led off the 10th with an RBI single off Zack Thompson. Another sports season ends, but the sports world still has quite a bit to discuss as I'll get into the latest and greatest of what's happening. On deck: (4:04) The Sports Dead Zone Pt. 2 is upon us. Now that the fall and winter sports have concluded, I'll zero in on what the next couple of months will look like in the sports landscape as we get you through the summer to the football season in early September. (7:14) The Colorado Avalanche has exorcised some playoff demons by winning the Stanley Cup Finals dethroning the two time defending champion, Tampa Bay Lightning. With their core of Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog and Cale Makar, do the Avalanche have what it takes to build a championship dynasty over the next few years? What about the Lightning? Can they get back to the Cup at this time next year? I'll answer those questions and give a review on the Stanley Cup Playoffs on a whole as we say goodbye to hockey until the fall. (21:35) The NBA Draft wasn't much to write home about. Although I like what both Orlando did (selecting Paolo Banchero and what direction they're heading with a group of good young players) and Detroit (picking Jaden Ivey and trading for Jalen Duren in the first round). My biggest concern, or in this case GRIPE, is what the Knicks aren't doing and it falls at the feet of their front office! This is a commentary that you won't want to miss as I dissect the silence and ineptitude of team president, Leon Rose and VP, William Wesley. (39:16) The Houston Astros have an interesting stretch to where they're playing both the Mets and Yankees over the course of ten days. After six games, with three more to go this week, how did they stock up to the best in both the National and American League? I'll get into the heroics of Aaron Judge this season and what his potential free agent contract could look like for the Yankees? The return of Freddie Freeman to Atlanta, the injury suffered by Bryce Harper who is out indefinitely with a broken thumb. The Guardians lose grip of the AL Central. The Red Sox rise in the AL and much more as baseball will be front and center as we get deeper into the summer. (51:40) Wimbledon kicks off the third Grand Slam of the calendar this year today. I'll preview both the men's and women's side. Will we see another Novak Djokovic-Rafael Nadal matchup for the title? What can we expect from Serena Williams as we'll see her on the court at a major tournament for the first time in quite a while? (56:03) NFL Training Camps are less than a month away. Is yours truly ready for some football? I'll get into that and another Manning (i.e. Peyton & Eli's nephew, Arch) makes his announcement as to what university he'll suit up for in the fall of 2023. (59:47) My Hero and Zero of the Week is on hiatus. I'll explain. We have talked on several occasions over the course of the season on how Nazem Kadri has been on his best behavior throughout the season. Sure he has his fair share of penalty minutes, but the vast majority of those minutes are due to the hard style of hockey he plays. You aren't seeing the overly aggressive, looking for a fight Kardi. And just look at what it has done for him this season. Amassing a career high in points. Kadri wrote a letter in the Players Tribune yesterday and it covered a lot of bases. His time in Toronto, not wanting to be traded but when he eventually was his appreciation in how quickly the community of Denver was towards him and his family. He also talks about this team specifically and how special they are. You read him gushing about all of this and you have to wonder if he will sign anywhere other than Colorado when he is an unrestricted free agent after the season is over. Plus, Kadri was the Colorado Avalanche nominee for the King Clancy Award, which is presented "to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.". We know what Kadri has done off the ice for his community, but it's that ON the ice part that is quite the turnaround. Chris and Kyle also watch a new Pepsi commercial that features Cale Makar and Gabriel Landeskog in hilarious fashion. It' gives funny commercials hope again. Tune in and subscribe! The Colorado Avalanche have been stuck on 116 points for the season for four games now. Three points away from setting the franchise record for most points in a season. Thanks to them losing four straight games in regulation they have yet to set that record. Sure we can say they are down key players like Mikko Rantanen, Gabriel Landeskog and Devon Towes. But the players they have now should not be losing four games in a row. All the current Avalanche problems were on display last night in the 4-1 loss to Winnipeg. They struggled to maintain possession, they struggled with zone exits, turnovers galore and defensive to offensive transitions were ugly. And let's not even discuss the power play which for some reason has fallen off a cliff. Chris and Kyle break it all down. Tune in and subscribe!
