This week's conversation is with Sharmadean Reid, the founder, writer and creative consultant who started off in fashion before becoming a figurehead for women in business around the world. Originally from Wolverhampton, Sharmadean moved to London to study at Central Saint Martins. There, she began working with Nicola Formichetti, aka. Lady Gaga's stylist, and consulting for clients like Nike. She then founded an innovation-led salon called WAH nails - the coolest place to hang out in the 2010s. After closing the salon in 2015, she created a groundbreaking beauty startup, Beautystack, which evolved into The Stack World, a media company and global community for mission driven women. This year, she distilled her learnings into her first book, ‘New Methods for Women', and is currently working on a scripted TV show about female founders.Click here to see pictures of Sharmadean's chosen pieces, and subscribe for more Threads of Conversation. Sharmadean Reid MBE is an entrepreneur and passionate advocate for female empowerment. Having navigated the male-dominated world of business and venture capital, Sharmadean is dedicated to unmasking and deconstructing patriarchal barriers to female success. In this episode, we discuss financial empowerment, her experience as a female entrepreneur and what it means to have a supportive network around you. Sharmadean also shares insights from her latest book, New Methods for Women. Drawing on the wisdom of sources from business books to neuroscience to mythology, she has created her own unique methods to help women live purposeful and empowered lives. In 2018, Sharmadean became one of the only black women in the UK to raise over £1 million in seed funding for her beauty-booking app, BeautyStack. But Sharmadean believes that even if she has won, it doesn't mean the work is done for everyone. Success is not about praise or accolades, but about acknowledgement - knowing that her work has made a difference to even one woman's life. Sharmadean's insights are crucial for understanding the challenges we face and what can be done to build a better, fairer future for everyone. Episode 100!! We've made it!!I truly cannot believe that we've made it to 100 episodes, but at the same time it still feels like the beginning. I've said it in pretty much every episode so far, but my aim for this was always to have interesting, advice-filled conversations, with fascinating people. When I started 100 episodes ago, I was frustrated that “life improvement” podcasts were either just positioned as health, or productivity, and how in fact it really stretches so much further than that. Whether you've listened to one episode, or one hundred, I can't thank you enough for being part of the journey - this podcast has always been guided by what you want to learn & improve on, so never stop sending ideas and making this podcast alongside me! I'm so grateful and we have huge huge plans for the future so here's to the next 100!+EPISODES FEATURED:John Amaechi: gracebeverley.komi.io/podcast/ep-76-why-youre-struggling-with-motivation-and-how-to-fix-it-with-john-amaechi-obe?id=f245b6bd-05de-4ecd-bf61-e116025b80e9 Kate Moyle: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7cKOEHSsMRuMaWa1o7meB1?si=5ec2e4302923466d Vivian Tu: gracebeverley.komi.io/podcast/ep-86-how-to-change-your-relationship-with-your-finances-forever-with-vivian-tu?id=f245b6bd-05de-4ecd-bf61-e116025b80e9 Sharmadean Reid: https://open.spotify.com/episode/73UnPKyTbpBE7yXkBePMN5?si=8386e477267d41f6 Jason Fox: https://open.spotify.com/episode/1wwipdm3cQLxDYihB6gD54?si=2f29bbee42424d3e Ben Gallagher: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4Qp021I7ZW2SAXTHGmi8jj?si=fde87f36f2904810Candace Brathwaite: https://open.spotify.com/episode/73UnPKyTbpBE7yXkBePMN5?si=f669d199247e48f3Dr Hazel Wallace: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6OGYQBxouN4fCuh5NqCX6A?si=3f9c477e6ac64dbeWill Ahmed: gracebeverley.komi.io/podcast/ep-88-the-grit-it-takes-to-turn-your-idea-into-a-billion-dollar-reality-with-whoops-will-ahmed?id=f245b6bd-05de-4ecd-bf61-e116025b80e9Rangan Chatterjee: gracebeverley.komi.io/podcast/ep-83-why-the-first-5-minutes-of-your-day-are-the-most-important-with-dr-rangan-chatterjee?id=f245b6bd-05de-4ecd-bf61-e116025b80e9Caroline Hirons: https://open.spotify.com/episode/5aUFuHqdIQ6bl1lzK4kbWH?si=1547f73d78fb43e1+MY LINKS: https://gracebeverley.komi.io/+RETROGRADE, SHREDDY, TALA and THE PRODUCTIVITY METHOD are my own businesses, therefore any mention of them - whilst not being a sponsorship - is monetarily endorsed. Today's guest is Sharmadean Reid MBE, a serial founder and author. Sharmadean grew up in Wolverhampton, surrounded by strong female influences before she went to London to study at Central St Martins. She then became a successful stylist and creative consultant before starting her first business at 25 - WAH nails – a pioneering nail salon in East London. Despite wanting to quit after six months, she celebrated the shop's ten year anniversary before closing it down and launching Beautystack - a beauty tech startup (with outside funding) and, following Covid which hit the beauty industry hard, she is now founder and CEO of The Stack World– a global media platform and community for women. In this conversation, Sharmadean talks me through her life and career journey from the curious young girl in Wolverhampton with high aspirations to the powerful business woman she became, her likes and dislikes about being a founder in a male-dominated world, the lessons she has taken from her businesses to life, and her new book, New Methods for Women: A Manifesto for Independence– a book which I consider to be the new bible for women.Like her book, this conversation will no doubt uplift women everywhere. Because Sharmadean gives us the playbook for how to succeed... on our own terms.Enjoy! Join myself and Sharmadean Reid, the powerhouse behind the Stack World and author of "New Methods for Women." Our conversation is exploring her book, which is set to hit the shelves on June 27, 2024. It is a toolkit for women to craft their futures, drawing on insights from her own experiences and transformation together with observations from the world, her large community and studying the work of others.Sharmadean offers a compelling perspective on the echoes of intergenerational experiences, the delicate balance between vulnerability and self-sufficiency, particularly for millennial women, and the profound impact of our attachment styles on the journey towards healing. And when it comes to the art of communication, her wisdom sheds light on cultural narratives and discerning fact from opinion, providing a different way to really consider how we all speak and use our words. Finally, let's not forget the influence of myths on gender equity and societal norms. Sharmadean invites us to reimagine these stories. With everything costing more and wages not quite keeping up, maybe it's time we did. Anita is joined by businesswoman and entrepreneur Sharmadean Reid to discuss. Imagine being the first woman to travel to the Moon. The Nasa astronaut Christina Koch is edging closer to that entry in the history books. She has been chosen as one of the four crew members who will orbit the Moon in the spacecraft Orion, as part of Nasa's Artermis II mission in November next year. All going well, the Artemis programme will continue in 2025 as Nasa and its partners attempt to land the first woman and first person of colour on the surface of the Moon. Anita speaks to Christina all about it. A new study has found that the morning-after pill is made more effective when taken with an anti-inflammatory painkiller. The study found taking the morning-after pill combined with piroxicam - a drug used for arthritis pain - prevented 95% of pregnancies, whereas taking the morning-after pill alone prevented 63%. We have music and chat from the Swiss-Tamil singer Priya Ragu who has been shortlisted in the BBC Sound of 2022 Poll – joining Adele, Jessie J and Celeste. She tells us how her music plays homage to her heritage and is a fusion of traditional Tamil music, RnB and Soul, which she uniquely calls ‘Ragu Wavy'. The number of refugees leaving Ukraine has reached a million. If you were listening last week you'll remember the heart-breaking interview we did with Olena Symonenko. She had decided to flee Kyiv, and was down in a bunker with her 6 year old son. She had left her flat, which she had lived in as a child and all her adult life: and just as well she did, because her block of flats had been bombed and was on fire. She sent us a picture. We've been keeping in touch with Olena all week, tracking her journey and she's now in Poland. Sharmadean Reid is the Founder and CEO of The Stack World. Her mission is to create economic and social empowerment for women through technology and media. She has been building Women's communities for 16 years, starting with a print magazine called WAH which she created while at university. She tells us about The Stack World, and how the platform helps women entrepreneurs to monetise their micro communities through buying and selling from each other. We celebrate the emotional power of old clothes and today we hear from Sarah who tells us about the Janet Reger frilly knickers she received from her friend Ruth on her 21st birthday nearly 40 years ago. Mountains have long inspired climbers to write about their adventures. It's been a male dominated field but we hear from two women who are inspiring the next generation of climbers. The author and poet Helen Mort tells us about her memoir ‘A Line Above the Sky' and author Amy McCulloch talks about her adult fiction debut ‘Breathless'. Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rabeka Nurmahomed

It’s now hard to imagine luxury fashion without online retail. However, it was not that long ago that we started to see the names of founders and companies emerging that would change the fashion landscape forever. In June 2000 Natalie Massenet launched NET-A-PORTER. Matchesfashion launched its e-commerce website in 2006 to complement to its offline presence and in June 2007 José Neves launched Farfetch. Not forgetting - naturally not on the same scale, but still significant to our story - that Black Neon swimwear launched e-commerce in June 2011, which according to our founder, was certainly not as easy or cheap as you make it happen for today. Considering today 97% of Matchesfashion’s sales come from online shopping according to Forbes we can see the power of online. But, how did we get from no online presence to being leaders in luxury fashion e-commerce? Well, thanks in part to people like Pia Stanchina. Having launched her own sustainable luxury fashion label focused on fusing innovative design with biodegradable materials in 2009, Pia became UK Co-founder at Glossybox UK, a Rocket Internet start-up aimed at becoming the premier direct marketing tool for high-end, niche and professional Beauty brands where she was CMO/Creative Director. This was the beginning of Pia’s career as a fashion innovator. With her sights set high, Pia contacted Google and ended up landing a role as Google Industry Manager for Fashion, Beauty and Luxury. She later helped to set up a new Digital Acceleration Fashion & Luxury Retail team to help medium-sized British brands grow. In parallel, she was Digital & Innovation Board Advisor for the British Fashion Council. During this time, Pia became known for her big picture thinking combined with a focus on actionable insight. Pia’s talent has benefited many companies and female founders including, Semaine Founders Michelle Lu and Georgina Harding and also Sharmadean Reid MBE of WAH London, Beautystack and Future Girl Corp, the latter of which Pia had significant involvement in. After a period of time out, rebuilding herself and taking time to focus on what she wanted her own future to look like, Pia trained in transformational coaching. Now as an empowerment speaker and coach Pia inspires companies and individuals ‘to tap into all our innate creativity, brilliance and wisdom’ to enable us to ‘fully become the person you were born to be and live the life you dream of.’ With Pia’s infectious positive energy and optimism, it’s easy to see how we can turn dreams into reality with her help. We hope you enjoy listening to Pia’s story and perhaps you may find yourself reaching out to her too! https://piastanchina.com www.blackneondigital.com

On this episode Abadesi talks to Sharmadean Reid, founder of Beautystack. She’s one of Aba’s favorite people of all time, and is an inspiration to women and people of color everywhere. She recently raised a whopping seed round to grow and scale Beautystack. In this episode they talk about...How she’s helping women start businesses“People always say that the information is out there, but sometimes you don’t know what to Google.”Sharma talks about the importance of networks of women who can help and support each other in their founder journeys. She explains what it was like for her when she was just getting started, and how she was helped by others who were further along than she was. She has been giving back through a couple of different initiatives and talks about the self-sustaining community they have created.“The proudest thing for me is the tens of thousands of connections between women that we’ve created.”What fashion means to her“My personal style to me is the reason I like fashion. Fashion and beauty is essentially how we as homo sapiens show our tribes, it’s the way we say this is what I am, this is what I stand for and what I believe in. For me, being a bit ‘extra’ with my look is a testament to how my mind works.”She explains how fashion can make a powerful statement and her philosophy behind how she chooses her looks, saying that it’s part of “living in the future.” She explains how she got into the fashion industry in the first place, takes us behind-the-scenes of fashion shoots, and talks about why they are excellent vehicles for virality. Her fundraising journey“We often sit there and have a business idea and do a pitch deck and do market research. But market research is not the same as writing your own thesis of how the future is going to look.”Sharma explains how she approached the fundraising for Beautystack, and talks about why, once you’ve done the important work in advance and have conviction in your ideas, it can be quite effortless to put everything together. She talks about fleshing out all of her thoughts around the company in a personal password-protected blog, and how she researched her investors ahead of time to know what kinds of objections they might bring up in order to anticipate them. She also points out that it’s important to find the right investors for your company, so you should be just as discerning as your investors are.The founder mindset and personal development“I think that good investors want missionary founders and cultivating my personal mission keeps me on the straight and narrow and gives me that north star that regardless of how the business pans out, I own that personal mission.”She is one of the hardest-working people that Aba knows, and invests in herself as much as in everything else that she does. She explains the importance of cultivating a personal mission and how to define success for yourself. She also talks about some of the mental models she uses, why she reads from a broad variety of sources, and explains what she means when she says “everything is cyclical.”The future of work and scaling a team“I learned this from the guys at Basecamp. Think of the company as your product. Your users are your employees — are you giving them the best user experience possible?”Sharma explains how she’s cultivated Beautystack’s unique culture. She takes us through some of the initiatives they’ve started, including increasing the level of gratitude in the workplace and why each person at the company creates and presents their own “guide to working with me.” She also talks about how she plans for the future growth of her company and why she loves the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer.Of course, she also lets us know what some of her favorite products on her home screen are. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

My guest today is the incredible entrepreneur Amy Thomson. She was the founder of SEEN, a global marketing agency working with brands such as Nike, Microsoft and RBS. She is also the co-founder of a business school for future female leaders called Future Girl Corp (alongside Sharmadean Reid, another Ctrl Alt DElete guest), which has a simple mission to inspire the new generation of female leaders. Now, she, alongside her team, has launched the Moody Month App. The mission of the app is to empower every woman to harness their moods through understanding their hormonal and emotional selves. The Moody Month App will allow you to track your monthly moods and cycle, along with plugging straight into your calendar and giving you mood forecasts for your month. The message behind the app is that being moody is your biggest asset, it's what makes you human not a robot. By having more awareness of your moods, means you can optimise your happiness. Let’s all re-connect and embrace the things that make us humans.Amy has shared her story and inspiration behind the app so honestly and openly in this episode. In 2015, when her periods stopped due to stress, she started a diary, and began to see patterns linking her bad moods and her hormonal imbalance. She then sold her agency, broke up with her boyfriend and set out on a mission to build this new technology which has turned into Moody. The site and app offers advice, from books recommendations, to articles to superfood tips. There’s an online shop, too. I found this conversation SO inspiring and I hope you do too.My favourite quote from the episode:"I'm getting Ubers, I'm ordering food, I'm using Nike Plus to track my running, but I'm a writing an analogue diary for my periods??" Does the beauty industry fuel insecurity and undermine a woman's choice to look how she wants? Kim Chakanetsa brings together two beauty entrepreneurs from Singapore and the UK who say they have lifted women up. Sharmadean Reid is a British Jamaican entrepreneur who founded WAH Nails, which she believes changed the beauty landscape with its millennial voice, feminist attitude and innovative salon space. Sharmadean went on to create FutureGirlCorp, workshops aimed at young businesswomen, and has now launched Beauty Stack. She says the beauty industry is perceived as women's work and is therefore undervalued. Pauline Ng is a Singaporean entrepreneur who founded a skincare spa business in 2009 with her mum. Porcelain has grown into an award-winning beauty chain with four spas, a staff of 60, and a line of popular skincare products. Pauline says that in Singapore there are a lot of opportunities for women in the beauty industry, even if the big multinational beauty companies are still mainly run by men. Sharmadean Reid founded WAH Nails as a side project in 2009 – now it is a huge global well-known business. In this episode I chat to Sharmadean about productivity and distraction. She has a brilliant Guardian column called Bossing It where she answers modern work questions. She wrote two WAH nails books, delivered global pop up nail salons for 100s of brands, created a product line with Walgreen Boots Alliance and was awarded an MBE for services to Beauty. So now she is building a new way to book beauty online with her new company Beauty Stack. We talk about what she’d learned from starting businesses. Sharmadean’s also working on a new campaign with NatWest which is all about helping small businesses be the best they can be. A big focus is on helping small businesses do more with less and improve their productivity through the NatWest Productivity Blueprint. The medium article I reference in the opening section of the interview is called “Growing Up Too Fast — Or Why I Closed WAH Nails Topshop”.Soundbites I love from this episode:“Why not write a completely new rule for how we determine success?”“Create your own pic ‘n’ mix from other people’s successful bios”“You can’t copy someone else’s path”“Being productive doesn’t mean being chained your desk the whole time.” See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Kim Kardashian is making all kinds of headlines this week; not because her new baby boy, Chicago, arrived via surrogacy - but because she's sharing dozens of pics of herself in the nuddy with what she has called ‘Bo Derek' braids aka: cornrows or Fulani braids. We discuss the knotty issue of cultural appropriation, how it exists within fashion and beauty and speak to Sharmadean Reid, the founder of WAH Nails and Beauty Stack, on why she isn't offended by Kim's appropriation of a black hairstyle - but how offence is not a blanket thing. How can and should we navigate the nuances? Also today, we discuss Trump's assertion that he isn't a feminist (snore), why the world's gone mad for Tupperware (and why no-one has written about this?) and the brilliant Radio 4 show that had us both wincing: are women sexist towards other women? Hello and welcome to episode 24 of My Big Idea, an ASOS podcast. Sharmadean Reid began WAH in 2005 as a little London-based fanzine about girls in hip-hop, which grew into a nail art empire praised by Vogue, Grazia, The New York Times, The Independant and countless other sources. Sharmadean had been working as a trend consultant since graduating from Central St Martins and instantly jumped at the idea to create WAH Nails in London's East End, Dalston. As WAH grew the company began to do shows at London Fashion Week, parties for huge brands such as Nike, Marc Jacobs and Diesel and had a successful week-long pop up salon in Selfridges. Since then, Sharmadean has been featured in Vogue as a part of the 'New Generation' and has opened a shop in Topshop, Oxford Circus. Following the brand's success, WAH has gained a cult following including the singer Lily Allen, and continues to grow steadily while staying true to WAH's roots.
