After Jesus predicts his death a third time, the mother of two of his disciples asks whether her sons could sit beside him in his eventual reign. His response reverberates through history to us today.

ZChurch Message for August 24, 2024 (Full service at: https://youtu.be/XDOtkwdTzNw)Elder Robert Peck shares the message "You're Gonna Have to Serve Somebody"In his song, "Gotta Serve Somebody," Bob Dylan told us no matter who you are, rich or poor, great or small, "You're gonna have to serve somebody." That's more than a one-time choice between heaven and hell, the devil or the Lord. It's an ongoing choice we make every day and hour. In everything we know, see, think, speak, or do, we make ourselves the servant of the one who is the source of those ways. Everything contrary to God's ways leads to death, but obedience to His ways produces a right state of being and brings a harvest of divine life.Download the free "Prayer Promises Guide" here: https://zchurch.life/prayer-promises-guide-free-ebook/What is ZChurch?? Today, we see Jesus' first miracle. There are a lot of interesting things here. We see how important a wedding is to the culture. Weddings were huge deals; they were parties. They were celebrations. It would have been very shameful for the wedding to have run out of wine. That is why Mary notices this. Although this may seem trivial, it is an act of kindness by her. But all the things that are interesting about this miracle to me, the thing that always stands out to me is this. Who were the only people to see what Jesus was doing? The servants. If you want to see Jesus, if you want to know Jesus, you have to serve somebody. Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. In 10 short minutes, he'll dig a little deeper into Scripture and help you better understand God's Word.If you'd like to receive this daily reflection on your phone, text @39110 to 81010 to sign up. Sermon for the Seventh Sunday after TrinityPaul compares slaves to impurity and lawlessness to slaves of righteousness. As he says, when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Just like the slaves were free of all other duties, those who are enslaved to sin are certainly free from righteousness, from following God's way. You hear people flaunt this all the time. They say, it's so much more freeing not to live under those rules and morals, not to have guilt over what I do, I can do whatever I want! But in reality they are not free. You gotta serve somebody.

Modern people from all over the spectrum have all sorts of problems with Paul. Why? Because Paul was, in many ways, an anti-modern man who didn't share our love of individualism and freedom because he believed true freedom was not doing whatever you want but surrendering to and serving the God who made you. Scott talks about seeing one of his spiritual mentors in concert last week--the one and only Bob Dylan. Bob sang one of his Christian songs called "Gotta Serve Somebody," and Scott reflects on what the song means to him and how it connects with all things Living Compass. His only regret is that, due to copyright laws, he cannot play any portion of the song on the podcast!
Sermon Resources: 1. “You may be an ambassador to England or France You may like to gamble, you might like to dance You may be the heavyweight champion of the world You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls But you're gonna have to serve somebody.” -Bob Dylan, "Gotta Serve Somebody" 2.“Freedom is not given to us merely as a firework to be shot off in the air. There are some people who seem to think that their acts are freer in proportion as they are without purpose…That is like saying that one is richer if he throws money out the window than if he spends it. Neither the spending of money nor the waste of money is what makes someone rich. He is rich by virtue of what he has, and his riches are valuable to him for what he can do with them. As for freedom, it grows no greater by being wasted, or spent, but it is given to us as a talent to be traded with until the coming of Christ.” -Thomas Merton, "No Man Is An Island" 3. Just as in an earlier time it was thought never fitting to deny God, now it seems never right to deny oneself.” -Robert Bellah, "Habits of the Heart" 6. “Their request is nothing less than a change in Israel's foundational commitment to God…This rejection is not a new happening but is characteristic in the history of Israel (v. 8). The whole history of Israel is one of “forsaking” and going after other gods. This request for a king is one more step in the continuing performance of mistrust (c.f. Psalm 106). The issue of monarchy in God's speech is perceived as Israel's unwillingness to have God as the source and rule of life.” -Walter Brueggemann, Interpretation Commentary Join us below: Facebook: www.facebook.com/midtownpreschurch Instagram: www.instagram.com/midtown.pres Website: www.midtownpres.org Community Groups: www.midtownpres.org/community-groups Sunday Services: www.midtownpres.org

Whether it is power or wealth, pleasure, or fame, we all live our lives in service to someone or something. Join us for part three of the Summer Psalms Mixtape, where we will learn from Psalm 96 that joy comes from serving the One we were created to serve.

Last time we celebrated that, in Christ, we are dead to sin – here's even better news, in Christ we are alive to righteousness. In fact, Paul puts it more starkly – we were slaves to sin and now we are slaves to righteousness. We are slaves to doing it all wrong and now we are slaves to all that is right.

This week we looked at the poet, not the just musician -- Bob Dylan. Dylan converted from Judaism to Christianity in the '70s and that didn't go over well in the music industry, but it did give him some great insight into the spiritual world. His song “Gotta Serve Somebody” is simple, yet deep, as it cuts through the moral hierarchy of society. We all serve someone.
We learned from the previous episodes how we are actually an eternal spark of life, a spirit soul. Now what? Do we just kind of float around and exist, that's it? No - we have an eternal function, an activity in which we align with our true selves and find true happiness. And that is to serve others, and serve the Supreme. Like Bob Dylan sang back in 85: “You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed You're gonna have to serve somebody Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord But you're gonna have to serve somebody” So who do you choose to serve? Highlights: (0:00) We're not in full control - and that's how it's meant to be. Balakhilya shares his realisations when starting on the yoga path. (8:37) We read and comment on the lyrics of Bob Dylan's song “Gotta Serve Somebody”. Service is our eternal natural function. (18:20) For our tendency to serve to be satisfying, we ultimately need to serve the Supreme Person. And that's not about joining a religion. (29:03) The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. This can be a gradual process, and you will never come out a loser. (35:59) The real joy as a parent is being able to serve one's kids. (40:37) This knowledge is called Raja Video - the king of all knowledge. It's a new year; now we've got an amazing opportunity to choose to act on that knowledge. Recorded on January 3, 2022. Romans 6:1-19 English Standard VersionDead to Sin, Alive to God6 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.Slaves to Righteousness15 What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.English Standard Version (ESV)The Holy Bible, English Standard Version. Some Israelites would rather return to slavery under Pharaoh than serve God in freedom in the wilderness. We're faced with a similar choice today. Like Bob Dylan sang about: “You gotta serve somebody!”
