Listen as Pastor Eugene Oldham preaches a sermon called Choose You This Day Whom You Will Serve from Joshua 24:14-24.
In this message, we reflect on the past year and consider what remains unfinished. Perhaps many of our goals, aspirations, and plans didn't come together. Does this mean they are now abandoned or will be forever incomplete? Listen as we remember the story of Joshua and think on some of the challenges, delays, and setbacks that his generation faced. As he resolved to keep pursuing the Lord into the next chapter of his life, so must we as one year transitions to another.
Joshua 24:14-15 - "A New Year, A New Opportunity to Serve the Lord"
The final chapter of Joshua seems to focus on themes of God's agency, idolatry, and continuity. There is a strong emphasis on God's actions that have led the Israelites since Abraham - and especially since the Exodus. The history that has unfolded in Joshua is described as God's doing. Calls against idolatry are perhaps an expected theme as Joshua nears the end of his life, since this issue has been one focus of his leadership through the conquest of idolatrous nations. It is fascinating to reflect on the idea of continuity as we continue to learn from the story thousands of years after it was first written down.
Do You Live In The Land Of Self Or Spirit? You Have A Choice, What Stance Do You Take? Joshua 24:14-15 14“Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
We will serve the Lord- Joshua made a covenant with the people of Israel to serve and obey the Lord before his death. The testimony of his life was that "Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua." Will you make a stand and serve the Lord in a wayward culture like Joshua?
A history lesson- God spoke through Joshua at Shechem with an exhortation after reflecting on the history of His faithfulness to Israel. What was the conclusion? Joshua said, "Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served
Joshua 24 – Joshua challenges Israel to make a choice. Joshua made the choice for his family and determined that they would follow God regardless of what anyone else chose.

P.O.G. Daily Pause2025-11-21 Friday - Joshua 24:14-1814 Joshua said, “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.”15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, ….. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, ….. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.”

In Joshua 24, the Israelites stood at a crossroads. They had taken the promised land of Canaan. With this new reality, would they maintain their covenant with God or give in to the larger cultures surrounding them? Joshua gives a clarion call to the people: choose you this day whom you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Life can either be hard or hard. It is always best to choose to go with the Lord. Over the next several weeks, culminating on Nov. 2nd, we will continue to explore ways the covenant is expressed here at Wesley Memorial. How does our personal growth, our serving, and our giving express the covenant to others, in a winsome and gracious way that says “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord?” Its not about crossing a budget, but about raising the bar for our own individual spiritual journeys, showing that our small unseen choices make a bigger, cumulative impact.

Everyone worships something. The question isn't if you worship — the question is what or who you worship. Joshua 24 takes us to a dramatic moment in Israel's history, where Joshua gathers millions of people at Shechem, stands before them as an old man, and declares a truth that echoes through the centuries: “Choose this day whom you will serve … but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” This isn't just ancient history — it's our reality. In this message we unpack: • The truth about worship: It's not just singing — it's where your loyalty, trust, and sacrifice really go. Everyone has a god, whether it's money, success, pleasure, image, or the Lord Himself. • The idols that eat us alive: From Mesopotamian gods to today's cultural gods of sex, money, and power, false worship always takes more than it gives. You become like what you worship — and if your “god” is destructive, you will be too. • The unmatched faithfulness of God: Joshua reminds Israel — and us — of how God rescues, provides, and blesses. He gave Israel land they didn't build and cities they didn't deserve. He's done the same for us: rescuing us from sin, answering prayers, and providing in ways we couldn't imagine. • The weight of choice: God is holy and jealous. He demands exclusive devotion — not half-hearted, cultural Christianity. Joshua warns the people that they cannot serve the Lord unless they're all in. This is not a casual decision — it's the most important decision of life. If you've ever wrestled with divided loyalties, felt the pull of the world's gods, or struggled to go “all in” with God, this message will confront you, encourage you, and challenge you to make the most important decision of your life — today.

Joshua's Final Exhortation (Joshua 24)Harold GingerichEWC LivestreamAugust 24, 2025Join us as we look into God's Word for encouragement and guidance, as we conclude our study in the book of Joshua.
“But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 NLT) Are you trying to live in two worlds? If so, then I know something about you. I know you’re not happy. Am I right? When you spend time around other Christians, you’re uncomfortable because of your sin. On the other hand, when you’re doing things you know you shouldn’t as a Christian, then you have the conviction of that sin. I have an idea: Stop doing that stuff. Make your choice. As Joshua said to the Israelites, “Choose today whom you will serve. . . . But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15 NLT). Every one of us must make that same decision. I can’t make it for you, and you can’t make it for me. Are you in a relationship that’s dragging you down? Think hard about the apostle Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 6:14–15: “Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?” (NLT). Are you doing things that are weakening your resolve? Think about the disadvantage you’re creating for yourself and the opening you’re giving your spiritual enemy. Trying to live in two worlds is like trying to pitch a tent in no man’s land during a battle. You’re setting yourself up for constant bombardment. You’ll face spiritual battle after spiritual battle, and your enemy will have the advantage in every one of them. I’m not saying it’s easy to turn your back on sin. We all get tempted. We all struggle with our old nature. And as Christians, we all have a God who will give us the strength to do what He has called us to do. It comes down to this: Do you want to change? If you do, then God will give you the resolve you need. In Exodus 3, the Lord spoke to Moses through a burning bush. He instructed Moses to return to Egypt to demand that Pharaoh release the people of Israel from slavery. Moses’ reply went something like this: “I can’t do this. I don’t know what to say. I stumble over my words.” Two chapters later, Moses faced off against Pharaoh, perhaps the most powerful man on earth at the time. The sudden change wasn’t due to Moses’ self-improvement regimen. God gave Moses the strength he needed to accomplish His will. In the same way, God will give you the strength to do what you need to do. Don’t live in two worlds. Make a complete commitment to Jesus. Reflection question: Why is it so tempting to try to live in two worlds?
