Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
Amber Melanie Smith discovered her passion for giving back at a young age, which led to the creation of a nonprofit organization that mobilized over 50,000 volunteers to make a difference in their communities. While deeply committed to this mission, Amber began to feel the weight of burnout. It wasn't until she took a step back that she realized she was no longer connected to the work that truly lit her up. This episode explores what it means to follow your passion, even when it requires making tough decisions, and the importance of redefining success on your own terms. Bio: Amber Melanie Smith is a speaker, award-winning nonprofit founder, social entrepreneur, and creator of the Changemaker Accelerator. Through a growing online community of changemakers, speaking, and educational content, Amber helps people create their roadmap to a life and career that creates positive social change. In college, Amber took off on a 3 month cross-country road trip with her best friend to volunteer in over 20 states. When she returned home, she launched Activate Good, a nonprofit that has since mobilized over 50,000 volunteers to help hundreds of causes. Amber's writing about social impact, service, and leadership has appeared in Fast Company, the Philanthropy Journal, and other media. In 2017, Amber was appointed a commissioner on the NC Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service by NC Governor Roy Cooper. In 2019, Amber launched a YouTube channel to help educate people on starting and growing a successful nonprofit organization or social enterprise, which has since reached 70,000 changemakers around the world. "Without standards, there can be no expectations. Without expectations, the probability of chaos is high."This quote is so true, yet many leaders assign tasks without communicating standards and expectations. Additionally, leaders must recognize that to whom tasks are assigned should be a thoughtful process, considering two important factors. If you are leader who has ever wondered why the team is not producing to your liking or have had to "re-do" work that you have assigned because it was not completed they way you would have liked, the answer is likely in your failure to delegate effectively. In this episode of The Leaders' Lounge, our Chief Training Officer, Dawn Marie Morris, held a mini-masterclass from a segment of her book, "Unpacking AGAPE-The 7 Languages of Intentional Leadership", on how to avoid, "The Danger of NO Expectations".Pick up your copy of the book, "Unpacking AGAPE: The 7 Languages of Intentional Leadership" at www.worldclasstraining.net/agape
What is your delegation process? Do you just dole out tasks or are you planful in how you share the responsibilities of your team? How often have team members delivered a result that was quite different than what you expected, leading to either double work, abandonment of the project or a deliverable that was substandard? These questions and more are born out of a leader's failure to set expectations when delegating. One of the leader's primary responsibilities is to build a great team of people who can carry out the work of the team in accordance with the leader's mission and vision. Tasks along the way to fulfilling the mission and vision must be delegated well in order to achieve the desired results. In this episode of The Leaders' Lounge our Chief Training Officer, holds a mini-master class on the delegation dilemma and helps you avoid, "The Danger of NO Expectations".Please purchase a copy of her latest book, Unpacking AGAPE: The 7 Languages of Intentional Leadership at www.worldclasstraining.net/agape

Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
Josh Izenberg started his college career with many interests and no solid idea of what he wanted to do after graduation. Along the way he fell in love with filmmaking and headed to LA to make his dreams of being a wildly successful filmmaker come true. Unfortunately, that did not turn out as planned, so Josh ditched his expectations of what “being a success” looks like and made a small film with some friends in Eastern Tennessee. And there he had a revelation: with no expectations comes total freedom. Josh has had several twists and turns on his way to winning multiple awards for his documentary films and his latest release, Eco-Hack!. Please listen in to hear Josh's perfectly imperfect journey. Bio Josh Izenberg is a documentary filmmaker based in the California Bay Area. His film, SLOMO (2013), won over a dozen awards, including best short documentary at SXSW, premiered as a New York Times Op-Doc, and was shortlisted for an Academy Award. On this episode after some time of not recording Lilly and Vlad air out why the inconsistency has been a struggle. The only this to expect now is that there is no expectations. Lilly and Vlad finally realize the real reason they wanted to have a podcast, it's just for the fun of it.
What would your life look like if you had no expectations? If you showed up to every event, movie, dinner party, work meeting, or performance with NO expectations of how it would go? For some, this very idea might give you the shakes. You might be saying to yourself, “but expectations help me prepare” or “I need to have expectations of myself otherwise I will just phone it in, I won't try hard.” In today's Coaching Through Stories episode, you'll learn how having no expectations can unlock great performances, reduce your stress and increase your overall well-being. Expectations are defined as a process by which we leverage past experiences and knowledge to predict future outcomes. In other words, expectations are beliefs about the future with conditions – what we believe SHOULD happen. For example, I worked hard on this proposal, I got the right team in place, we partnered with the best vendor, we should win the contract. If you hear yourself saying this “should” happen – then that is an expectation. Expectations are fixed and frozen, they are limited to our previous experiences, and they generate an unhealthy attachment to the outcome which can cause us to miss opportunities and fully experience reality as it is, not as we wish it to be. People with high expectations are attached to the outcome, their feelings are attached to the outcome, and their happiness is dependent on the outcome. All of which is interfering with their ability to perform in the present moment. Key Takeaways: We cannot deny the fact that our mind is a powerful asset in generating the right conditions to achieve our goals. It's the reason why the placebo effect is so powerful. Keep your belief about your ability, about your goals, and about your dreams extremely high, just do so without the word “should.” Our minds are constantly generating expectations – our brains love patterns and are searching for patterns, being overly attached and expecting this result just because it's happened in the past limits our ability to perform in the present and be consumed by the process. "How do you balance it all?!", is a question that I receive commonly! "How do you do what you do without caving under the pressure of it all?!", is the second most common question I get asked. As women we are often can wonder if balance is truly attainable in our lives. These are valid thoughts and questions that we're going to address today! You can be pulled in so many directions at once that we can wonder if we're dropping the ball in areas. So we automatically think that we need to achieve balance. But balance means that everything will get equal parts of your attention. That's not humanly possible, so today we're going to talk about what is possible! ____________________________________ Listen to this episode to hear more.
