This Sunday, we're turning to the book of Proverbs to explore God's design for husbands and wives. The modern family has undergone significant redefinitions, yet stability and fulfillment seem more elusive than ever. While society offers competing narratives, Scripture presents a clear and timeless vision. Proverbs 31 paints a picture of a strong, virtuous wife, while the rest of Proverbs offers wisdom for husbands - calling them to integrity, faithfulness, and sacrificial leadership. Marriage is not a competition but a covenant, and when both husband and wife embrace God's design, the home flourishes. Some may read Proverbs 31 and feel overwhelmed rather than encouraged. But this passage is not a checklist of impossible standards; it is a lifelong picture of Godly character, cultivated by God's grace. True strength comes not from striving for perfection but from trusting in the Lord. Husbands, our role is to cultivate an environment where our wives can thrive, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her. Wives, your strength and wisdom are a gift that builds up your family. Together, a Godly marriage is not only possible but profoundly beautiful when rooted in biblical wisdom. As we prepare to dive into this text, I challenge each of us to reflect on our roles within our families. Husbands, are you leading with integrity, love, and sacrifice? Wives, are you embracing the strength and wisdom that God has given you? And for those who are not yet married, are you preparing your heart to walk in God's wisdom? May we all look to Christ, the perfect example of love and leadership, as we seek to build marriages and homes that honor Him.

For Father's Day, Brother Luke Harriman shared some thoughts on what it looks like to be a Proverbs 31 man. Though we usually focus on verses 10–31 of this chapter and the beautiful picture they give of a godly woman, we can also gain encouragement toward being a godly man from the opening of the chapter in the instructions to King Lemuel by his mother.

In this powerful episode of G220 Radio, we dive deep into Proverbs 31:1-9, exploring the timeless wisdom passed down from King Lemuel's mother. This passage, often overlooked in favor of the latter verses about the virtuous woman, is a profound call for godly leadership, moral responsibility, and biblical justice. We unpack what it means for kings and leaders not to be ruled by passions, and how believers today, especially men, must use their influence to speak up for the voiceless, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy. Whether you're a Christian man seeking biblical direction, a teacher of God's Word, or someone passionate about Christian leadership and ethics, this episode offers insight, encouragement, and conviction. Join us as we study the scriptural principles of justice, wisdom, and integrity in this short yet weighty Proverbs section.

Unexpectedly, given that the only women described in the Book of Proverbs so far have been an adulteress and a quarrelsome wife, the book's finale is a eulogy to a character referred to as "the Wife of Noble Character".This woman is a striking example of smartness, industry, economy, care and moral support, and also provides a fascinating insight into the independence of ancient Near Eastern woman at a time when many assume wives were second class citizens. Instead, this woman is as essential as she is fabulous.
Proverbs 31 is known for its instruction for an Excellent Wife. Although this chapter can be intimidating, today, we'll discuss how God will give wisdom to anyone who desires to follow these wise words in their home. Join us! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. Verse 1 tells us that the proverbs in this chapter were the words of King Lemuel. According to the podcast, who might he be? Ultimately, do we need to know his identity? 2. Proverbs 31 can be pretty intense. Yet, verse 1 tells us who first taught these principles to King Lemuel. Who was that? Does this help us accept these truths? Ultimately, should that matter to us? 3. In verse 3, why do you think Lemuel's mom warns the king about giving his strength to women? What does this look like? According to verse 3, why is this a problem? 4. What is being warned about in verses 4 to 7? According to these verses, who should not be drinking wine or strong drink? Why? In these verses, what exception is given as a sensible use of alcohol? What might be a modern application of this principle? 5. Verses 8 & 9 speak of the influence that kings have. Who (or whom) should they be using their influence for? What might this look like in our day and age? 6. The podcast mentioned that verses 10 to 31 form an acrostic in the Hebrew language. Why do you think King Lemuel's mother gave him these principles in this acrostic format? How important do you think this acrostic was for him to remember this all those years later? 7. Read over verses 10 to 31. a. What principles do you see regarding how a wise wife relates to her husband? b. What principles relate to how she handles her children? c. What principles relate to how she handles her home? 8. If you're a wife, take a moment and evaluate how your own life conforms (or does not conform) to these principles. Are there any areas where you need to improve? 9. If you're not a wife, read over verses 10 to 31 and write down the principles that are generic enough that the principle relates to everyone. Are there any principles here that are exclusive to wives? 10. As you reflect on the principles of the Wise & Excellent Wife, is this standard “impossible”? As you reflect on how we have any spiritual growth, what spiritual realities must be present within a person to live according to this chapter? How might you grow in these spiritual realities, in order that you may grow in the principles from this chapter? Check out our Bible Study Guide on the Key Chapters of Genesis! Available on Amazon! 1 The words of King Lemuel—the revelation which his mother taught him: 2 "Oh, my son! Oh, son of my womb! Oh, son of my vows! 3 Don't give your strength to women, nor your ways to that which destroys kings. 4 It is not for kings, Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, nor for princes to say, 'Where is strong drink?' 5 lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the justice due to anyone who is afflicted. 6 Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish, and wine to the bitter in soul. 7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more. 8 Open your mouth for the mute, in the cause of all who are left desolate. 9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy." 10 *Who can find a worthy woman? For her value is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her. He shall have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works eagerly with her hands. 14 She is like the merchant ships. She brings her bread from afar. 15 She rises also while it is yet night, gives food to her household, and portions for her servant girls. 16 She considers a field, and buys it. With the fruit of her hands, she plants a vineyard. 17 She arms her waist with strength, and makes her arms strong. 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp doesn't go out by night. 19 She lays her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. 20 She opens her arms to the poor; yes, she extends her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She makes for herself carpets of tapestry. Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is respected in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and delivers sashes to the merchant. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing. She laughs at the time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom. Kind instruction is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household, and doesn't eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed. Her husband also praises her: 29 "Many women do noble things, but you excel them all." 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman who fears Yahweh, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands! Let her works praise her in the gates! Listen Subscribe: Proverbs Daily Podcast Psalms Daily Podcast
Paul's letter to the church at Philippi is full of love and instruction for the Lord's church. He rejoices that the gospel is moving forward even while he is in prison, and encourages the church to endure suffering, to be united in love, and to serve one another sacrificially, looking to the King of Kings who humbled Himself even to death on a cross. Our boast is no longer in the flesh, but in the cross of Christ. Paul had much to boast about before surrendering to Christ but he says he now counts at all as loss in comparison to knowing Christ. Knowing that the Lord is near, we should be anxious for nothing, opting instead to pray and to consider the goodness of God.Philippians 1 - 1:11 . Philippians 2 - 5:42 . Philippians 3 - 11:08 . In the words of today’s guest, none other than President & Chief Visionary Officer of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Renowned Speaker, & Best-Selling Author, Lysa Terkeurst, “The last several years have been the hardest of my life. I know the depths of marital heartbreak, and what it feels like to wrestle through healing. I also know what it feels like to be diagnosed with cancer and to wonder why God would allow so much heartbreak. My pillow has seen its fair share of tears. But I’ve also seen God move in astounding ways… not always the ways I thought He would, but I guess that’s why we are called to follow Him with faith. And at the end of each day, that’s what you’ll find me doing — going to bed while saying thankful prayers for ways I once again experienced God’s faithfulness that day, big and small. I wish with every fiber of my heart that I could erase parts of my story. But staying stuck in trying to wish something away will cause me to miss the beauty of what is… and even better… trusting God for what can be.” We hope and pray that today’s conversation would help you navigate the pain of betrayal while clinging to the hope of the gospel. Although not easy - forgiveness, boundaries, and trust are skills that can be learned and developed again!
