On this impromptu Easter Day installment of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega reflects on our collective discombobulation (and mass disinhibition), building our inner Noah's Ark to survive these dark times that are getting much worse and much faster with Trump's return to power, and the symbolism and metaphorical power of the Easter holiday and the spring season. Following through on the importance of building our inner Noah's Ark and filling it with things that bring us joy, Chauncey shares his thoughts on this year's WWE WrestleMania 41 event, and what should have been an epic bout between John Cena and Cody Rhodes with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson playing his part as "The Final Boss". Chauncey also shares what it was like to interview Peter Weller aka the star of Robocop at the C2E2 convention in Chicago last weekend. The titan Nikki Giovanni transitioned to the next stage of existence on December 9, 2024. This week's episode features Chauncey DeVega's conversation with Giovanni, which was shared here four years earlier, on December 8, 2020. *** Nikki Giovanni is one of America's greatest living poets. She has written dozens of collections of poetry as well as non-fiction and other work. Giovanni has received many awards and other honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and three NAACP Image awards for literature. Nikki Giovanni was one of the greatest poets of her generation and it was an honour to sit with her for a special episode of The Last Bohemians, recorded in Spring 2024 in London, while she was promoting what would become her final anthology, Poems: 1968-2020 (Penguin Classics). When we saw she was in town, we jumped at the chance to speak with her and we're very grateful to have been granted an audience.A poet, author and activist, Nikki was considered a key figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 70s, which ran parallel to the Civil Rights and Black Power movements in America. It included notable writers and artists like Audre Lorde, Maya Angelou and another of our Last Bohemians, Betye Saar, many of whom she counted as friends. Just imagine that dinner party!Nikki was born in 1943 in Knoxville, Tennessee, grew up in Ohio, and self-published her first two books in 1968. In the 70s, she was selling out huge concert venues and started blending gospel music with spoken word, on albums like Truth is On The Way, foreshadowing the birth of hip-hop. Her poems spoke boldly of justice and liberation but had love and joy at their centre, and she released over 30 books of them. It's strange and sad to speak about Nikki Giovanni in the past tense: she passed away on 9 December 2024, aged 81, of complications from lung cancer, just before this edit was finished. We've sat on this episode for a while, unsure what to do with it and when to release it to the world. But we think you should have it in time for International Women's Day 2025. Since 2019, we've either launched a series or a one-off around this time and felt that, with everything going on in the world at the moment, it's the moment to send this special conversation out there. And wow, does Nikki have some things to say, as she discusses becoming a success, her famous friendships with Aretha Franklin and Nina Simone, the power of anger, her self-care routine and why poetry is a serious business indeed.////CREDITS////This episode is hosted and exec-produced by Kate Hutchinson, with audio production and editing by Kit Callin. It was recorded at Spiritland Studios, London. The poem you hear is 'Serious Poems' by Nikki Giovanni, part of the anthology book Poems: 1968-2020, out now on Penguin Classics. The music used is 'Only Instrumental' by Broke For Free.A huge thank you to Juliette Morrison at Penguin and Virginia Fowler for helping to make this interview happen. ALL LINKS: LINKTR.EE/BARBARAFAISON2025 - Week 10 - A TributeThis podcast is a tribute to my favorite poet, Nikki Giovanni and my English teacher, Mrs. Maureen DeLoach from Albany High school in Albany, GA.If you're new to the podcast, welcome, and if you listen regularly, thank you.In this episode, I'm doing something different, offering a tribute to my favorite poet, Nikki Giovanni and my English teacher Maureen DeLoach who really introduced me to poetry.I believe it was in the 10th grade when my English teacher at Albany High School, Maureen DeLoach, had us write poetry. I believe she listens to my podcast, I know she follows me online. That class in English opened me up to a world of writing. So it really is a tribute to Mrs. DeLoach and to Nikki Giovanni. My father, Moses Faison, was a librarian at the local branch on Lee Street in Albany, Georgia and also at Monroe High School. He was an avid reader. He mostly read non-fiction and I remember when he came home with a book of poetry called Cotton Candy On A Rainy Day, it was by Nikki Giovanni. I don't remember exactly when, I suspect it was when I got the assignment from Mrs. DeLoach to write a poem. And boy did I write. Poetry became my jam. I moved from poetry to short stories and then eventually I wrote my personal development book, Why Struggle? Life is too short to wear tight shoes years later in 1999.I fell in love with poetry and read her works and so many others. That book sparked something inside me. Nikki Giovanni passed in December 2024 and when I asked for my divine download about the podcast this week, she was heavy on my mind for some reason. In this tribute, I will share a few of my favorite poems from Cotton Candy On A Rainy Day.Sharing this tribute to Mrs. DeLoach and Nikki, Giovanni was actually also a tool. Reading poetry can be calming and a stress reliever.Thank you again, Mrs. DeLoach and Nikki, Giovanni for both of you, sharing your gifts with the world. One of the highlights of this show was having the late famed poet Nikki Giovanni on as a guest. It felt like we were all sitting at the dining room table, soaking up her wisdom. Giovanni tackled a challenging and important question: what do you do as a nonbinary person if the place that made you doesn't exactly accept who you are? That dilemma came from our former editor, CMD+JAZMINE, who explores their identity and faith with Giovanni. In this conversation, Giovanni shares some of her most intimate truths with CMD+JAZMINE, including her challenges with the institution of the Black church.GUESTS:CMD+JAZMINENikki GiovanniLINKS:deartbt.comInstagram: deartbtTikTok: tonyatbtEmail: tonya@deartbt.com

When Nikki Giovanni passed away in December at the age of 81, she left a legacy that will continue to be a beacon of light for generations to come. We first had Nikki on With Good Reason more than 20 years ago when I spoke to her about space travel and her poem, Quilting The Black Eyed Pea. And: Rapper Tupac Shakur famously sported a “thug life” tattoo… and so did Nikki Giovanni. I sat down with her in 2014 to talk about the poem she dedicated to Tupac after he was killed in 1996. Later in the show: The dean of southern cookery, Edna Lewis, penned an essay called “What is Southern?” describing how food is intertwined with the seasons and cultures of the south. Back in 2008 we had Nikki Giovanni read a portion of that essay and talk about her friendship with Edna. This interview was conducted by former producer, Nancy King - who passed away in 2010. Plus: In 2020, Virginia Humanities brought Nikki Giovanni in conversation with Tressie McMillan Cottom. It was part of an online event called “Have A Drink With Nikki and Tressie” - moderated by Irène Mathieu. They talked about everything from their early writing days, to finding their voice, and the future of art and literature in the Black community.
In this edition of our Arts24 music show, Jennifer Ben Brahim chats with poet and activist Aja Monet. She started putting pen to paper at just eight years old, thanks to a fascination with storytelling and typewriters. Her poetry has garnered critical acclaim, such as the collection "My Mother was a Freedom Fighter". Her activism has taken her from New York to Palestine. Aja's debut album "When the Poems Do What They Do" is a fluid blend of poetry and jazz. It is also an ode to some of the greats from the Black Arts Movement like Nikki Giovanni and Amiri Baraka. Aja described how she felt like a "spiritual archivist" when putting together the album. She is on tour in Europe with the record and is set to drop a new collection of poetry entitled "Florida Waters" this June.
Send us a textThis week, we celebrate the legacy of poet, children's book author, speaker, teacher and activist Nikki Giovanni who died on December 9th, 2024 at the age of 81. Giovanni's writing and her actions helped make this world a better place for Black people, Queer people, Women, and more. Her strength came forth in her written and spoken words and in the way she chose to live her life. Join us in remembering this extraordinary author and remember to think of her when you look up at the stars - or at a bat.

We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Days after Suspected Rapist, Suspected Race Soldier Roger Golubski suspiciously died before the start of his criminal trial, former Marine Daniel Penny was exonerated for publicly killing Jordan Neely on a crowded public train. Penny is schedule to join 2-time president-elect Donald Trump at the annual Army vs Navy football contest. They'll have an elegant suite to view the brain damage and concussions. It was reported this week that Amazon will donate $1 million in cash to Trump inauguration next month. Days after the death of Golubski, privileged black males Cedric Warren and Dominic Moore were released from prison after being caged for decades for a murder they did not commit. Suspected Rapist Roger Golusbki was the White Supervisor in charge of this unjust investigation. Suspected White Assassin Luigi Mangione was arrested and charged with killing White insurance CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione was recently employed at the prestigious Stanford University, and his White parents suspect he may have been in the San Francisco area during the last few weeks while Gus T. was still there. Disturbingly, many Whites across the country, and even here in Seattle, seem supportive of Mangione's public, and cowardly, execution of a White insurance executive. We also recognize the passing of poet, educator, and emeritus Virginia Tech professor Nikki Giovanni who died this week at the age of 81. #DoNotGivePoliceYourPhone #TheCOWS16Year INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The delightful Nikki Giovanni died on Dec. 9. It is a joy and a solace to relisten to this beloved conversation she had with Krista in 2016 – to experience her signature mix of high seriousness, sweeping perspective, and insistent pleasure. Her words and her spirit feel, if anything, more necessary now. In the 1960s, she was a poet of the Black Arts Movement that nourished civil rights. She became a professor at Virginia Tech, where she called forth beauty and courage after the 2007 shooting there — a precursor to violence that has become all too familiar in American life in the intervening years. And she was an adored voice to a new generation — an enthusiastic elder to all — at home in her body and in the world, even while she saw and exulted in the beyond of this tumultuous age of her lifetime.Nikki Giovanni was a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Some of her best known collections from which the readings in this show were taken include Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea, Black Feeling, Black Talk/Black Judgement, and The Collected Poetry of Nikki Giovanni. Her final publications include Make Me Rain: Poems & Prose and A Library.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Together they get into Glazer's forthcoming Hulu stand-up special “Human Magic,” their own parenting joys, and why onscreen fathers are always Homer Simpson or Tony Soprano. We were devastated when we heard of Nikki Giovanni's passing earlier this week. Her poetry evokes life on Earth and in the universe in such a beautiful, thoughtful and inclusive way. We are in the process of sharing our favorite episodes from the past and felt it was fitting to bring you back our QueerSpace episode featuring Nikki among other futurist artists. When researching QueerSpace, we repeatedly saw creators blending themes of space and themes of queerness in their art. Many of these artists use their art to envision new futures. Futurist thinking uses the experience of the past and present to contextualize and reimagine what the future could be, often creating a future that's more equitable and radically different than what we have now. Thanks to our guests in this Episode: Nikki Giovanni, Futurist Artist Lola Flash, Futurist Artist Stamatina Gregory, Chief Curator and Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art AirSpace Season 10 is just around the corner! Renowned poet and professor Nikki Giovanni died earlier this week at age 81, following a third cancer diagnosis. She was a prolific writer and leader in the Black Arts Movement, publishing poetry collections such as Black Feeling Black Talk and Those Who Ride the Night Winds. She also taught English at Virginia Tech. In today's episode, we revisit a 2013 conversation between Giovanni and NPR's Michel Martin that followed the release of Chasing Utopia, which featured a combination of essays and poetry. Giovanni and Martin discussed the poet's relationship to her late mother, the pleasure of old age, and the trauma of the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Nikki Giovanni carved out a revolutionary legacy during the civil rights era with poems that uplifted the experiences of Black Americans. On Monday, she died at age 81, following her third cancer diagnosis. We revisit Tom Power's conversation with the iconic poet from earlier in the year when she discussed her involvement in the birth of hip-hop, why artists should go to space, and how she packed a club full of 100 people that included guests like Morgan Freeman and Nina Simone.
As a young woman, poet and writer Nikki Giovanni could see that no one was interested in a Black girl writing what was seen as militant and revolutionary poetry. So she formed a company and published it herself. Her second book was launched at the famous New York jazz venue Birdland as she was making a name for herself. When she was 28, she flew to London to sit with James Baldwin and record a conversation for the PBS television series, “Soul.” Baldwin was in his late-40s and an established figure in literature. As event television, it was electric. And clips from that 1971 program continue to be shared. For many young people, that interview is how they first encounter Baldwin, and Giovanni. She's now 81 years old, and has had a garlanded career, including a Grammy nomination, bestselling books and work as a distinguished professor of English at Virginia Tech. Giovanni tells host Razia Iqbal why Baldwin's prose is a beautiful container for the fiery rage found in his messages. Tell us what you think. We're @noteswithkai on Instagram and X (Twitter).
