After doing extensive research, Management 3.0 founder Jurgen Appelo discovered a common thread: Happiness is something we create. It is not something to achieve. It is a path you choose, not a destination to arrive at. So many of us spend our lives in pursuit of happiness. Instead of searching for it, we need to find ways to live it, embrace it, and implement it into our daily lives. That's why we created the 12 Steps to Happiness at Management 3.0. It's helped me quickly recognize my emotions and learn how to control them. Mindfulness keeps me from getting too upset about strong emotions. Before, I would react strongly to things, but now I can handle them better and let them go. It's like we all have different emotions, but with mindfulness, I can choose to focus on the good ones and let the bad ones go, like waves in the ocean. Thoughts on Breathing When I meditate, I use a technique I learned a long time ago called Transcendental Meditation. I still say a special word, or mantra, while I meditate. But the breathing part is really important. I take deep breaths from my diaphragm, and I do it for about four seconds, then I let it out for about four seconds. I used to count to four, but now I can just feel when I'm in that special meditation zone, so I'm very aware of my breathing. You see, I have ADD, which means I sometimes struggle to stop my mind from racing with thoughts. But when I focus on my breathing, I can block out those thoughts for a while. It feels really nice when I can do that. Suggested Resources Book: Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender by David R. Hawkins Book: Wherever You Go, There You Are by John Kabat Zinn App: n/a Bullying Story When I was in junior high, I went through a tough time because some kids were bullying me. I felt scared and angry back then. Looking back, I wish I had known about mindfulness. If I had known what I know now, I might have handled the situation better. You see, bullies are often people who feel scared and insecure themselves. Knowing this, I could have tried a different approach to deal with them. I could have tried to understand why they were bullying and maybe do something that made them stop and think. But at the time, all I felt was anger, and I reacted to it. I didn't have the mindfulness skills I have today. If I were ever bullied again, I would try to understand where the bully is coming from. This approach could be a lot more effective, and I could handle it better by using techniques like deep breathing. It wouldn't be as tough as it was back then. Those times were really scary. Best First Meeting Tips (0:00:00) Meeting people for the first time can sometimes feel like you're doing emotional gymnastics. You're trying to balance how nice you are without trying too hard, you want to act interested in their lives without asking an awkwardly personal question, and for some reason your hands are dancing at your waist, trying to decide whether they want to be folded or not. You end up walking away from the conversation not knowing if the person likes you or is terrified of you. These first impressions can be uncomfortable if we don't know what we're doing. Thankfully, there are strategies we can have going into these conversations that will calm our conversational fears. Harvey Deutschendorf, an expert on emotional intelligence, joins us to give us tips on how to make an emotionally intelligent first impression. Hanger Management (0:15:27) Hungry plus angry. Hangry. It's a real emotion! It can definitely cramp our style and make dieting, healthy eating, and skipping dessert nearly impossible. How can we stay happy when our stomachs are in a state of mutiny? Dr. Susan Albers, a clinical psychologist and author who specializes in body image and eating issues, joins us to share ways we can defeat hanger. Hygge (0:35:03) Friend of The Lisa Show Carrie Ann Rhodes shares ways we can embrace the cozy comfort of hygge. Funniest Christmas Cards (1:05:33) How many cliché Christmas cards do you get every year and how many have you sent out? All Christmas cards are nice, and we all smile when we get them from our loved ones, but so many of them seem the same. Paul Browning is a talented graphic designer who designs his family's Christmas cards in out of the box ways that leave everyone rolling on the floor with laughter. We saw some of these cards and just had to hear more about them. Sustainable Holiday (1:22:12) The holidays are known for being a time of excess. Between the piles of baked goods, the boxes of decorations, and all the giving and receiving, we tend to continue to buy more, collect more, and use more than we do the rest of the year. Amid all of the holiday craziness, the environment may not beat the top of your priority list, but making planet-conscious choices can be easier than you think! Kate Brandt is Google's sustainability officer. She's here to offer tips for how we can be more eco-friendly this holiday season.
