Today on Can't Be Contained, I get to sit down with someone who is not only a dear friend, but one of the most honest, energizing voices I know—John Wang! John is a champion of Big Asian Energy (yes, he literally wrote the book on it!), an advocate for anyone who's fought to be seen, and a living, breathing example of what happens when you shatter the boxes the world puts you in. As I recorded this intro, I was literally packing for a Vegas keynote, thinking about how wild life gets when you set your intention and fully claim it. It's not magic—it's clarity. And clarity? That is where today's conversation begins. From there, John and I roll deep. Like, deep enough to laugh about our inner children, roasting each other about country music (Amy, we love you!), and unpacking what it actually took for both of us—after lifetimes of being the achievers, the pleasers, the strong ones—to let go of old scripts and let ourselves feel. Not just feel, but receive, expand, and own the space we're meant for. Listen in as John shares his journey growing up in a culture that taught him to silence his own greatness, how breakdown led to breakthrough (men's group, what?!), and how being honest about the messiness actually brought more love—and power—into every area of his life. Inside, we dig into: ➤ How a “burnout breakdown” became the catalyst for John's true calling ➤ Rewriting the story of worthiness—especially for high achievers and “model minorities” ➤ The step-by-step way to bring your inner child (and all your parts!) back online so you can lead and love from wholeness ➤ Real tools for couples wanting more emotional connection, even if your partner “doesn't get” inner work yet ➤ Why receiving—compliments, support, rest, JOY—matters just as much as being productive If you've ever felt unseen, like you're living below your potential, or trapped in patterns that just don't fit anymore—this episode is your permission slip to break free. We talk relationships, power dynamics, joy over productivity (yes, I quit an $11 million offer that drained my soul!), and why “having it all together” is so last season. This isn't just about Asians, or men, or entrepreneurs—it's about anyone who's ready to let their light all the way out, even if it gets a little awkward, a little messy, or a LOT real. Grab John's new book Big Asian Energy and my free 3-minute breathwork for imposter syndrome, because whether you're on the edge of a breakthrough or just searching for your voice—trust me, you are SO worthy. And the world needs exactly what only you can bring. Join us as we laugh, get raw, and remind ourselves (and you!) that your energy cannot—will not—be contained. About Can't Be Contained Can't Be Contained' is the unscripted, unedited – fully uncontained journal entries & real-life experiences of those who follow their bliss & intuitive hits, the freedom seekers, the sacred rebels – the ones who are here to disrupt what preceded us & create what is ahead of us. I grew up with parents who had me reading Dale Carnegie's book, How To Win Friends & Influence People, when other kids were reading comic books. They modeled being respectful to all people, especially those in the least positions of power. I actually found them to be far more intolerant of those in power. Four years ago I sat down with my Dad, Dan Miller, famous for his career book which has become a classic, 48 Days To The Work & Life Love, to talk about it. At the time my parents were living in a gated community in Florida where they often frequented the neighborhood club for meals. As soon as they pulled up in the parking lot, you'd think they were royalty in how the staff treated them. Literally. It was almost embarrassing. But it wasn't because my parents were well known. It wasn't because they tipped well. It's because they cared. They knew what was going on in the lives of the valets, the hostesses, the servers, the manager of the place. They did it because it's what they believed was right and best. But from the care they received, people could get the idea they lived a charmed life. But what I witnessed was that they planted the seeds…for a charmed life. So here is a discussion I had with my now deceased Dad, in his previous office, about the reasons and benefits behind treating all people with respect. In this special birthday episode, I reflect on my 20s and the spiritual growth that shaped who I am today. From college misalignment and losing friends to moving cities and building my business from scratch, I share the deep soul lessons that this decade taught me. I talk about what it really means to face spiritual initiations, why letting go is necessary, and how resisting change only prolongs pain. These years were tough, but they were transformative.
The secret insights of economics, translated for the rest of us. Should I buy or rent? Do I ask for a promotion? Should I tell people I'm pregnant? What salary do I deserve? Should I just quit this job? Common anxieties about life are often grounded in economics. In an increasingly win-lose society, these economic decisions—where to work, where to live, even how to live—have a way of feeling fixed and mistakes terminal. Daryl Fairweather is no stranger to these dynamics. As the first Black woman to receive an economics PhD from the famed University of Chicago, she saw firsthand how concepts of behavioral economics and game theory were deployed in the real world—and in her own life—to great effect. Hate the Game: Economic Cheat Codes for Life, Love, and Work (U Chicago Press, 2025) combines Fairweather's elite knowledge of these principles with her singular voice in describing how they can be harnessed. Her great talent, unique among economists, is her ability to articulate economic trends in a way that is not just informative, but also accounts for life's other anxieties. In Hate the Game, Fairweather fixes her expertise and service on navigating the earliest economic inflection points of adult life: whether to go to college and for how long; partnering, having kids, both, or neither; getting, keeping, and changing jobs; and where to live and how to pay for it. She speaks in actionable terms about what the economy means for individual people, especially those who have the sneaking suspicion they're losing out. Set against her own experiences and enriched with lessons from history, science, and pop culture, Fairweather instructs readers on how to use game theory and behavioral science to map out options and choose directions while offering readers a sense of control and agency in an economy where those things are increasingly rare. You probably know Gary Louris as the leader of The Jayhawks – or as they refer to themselves, “a band from Minnesota.” The Jayhawks are pioneers of roots rock, alt-country, and Americana. Whatever you wanna call it, they've been making records where rock, pop, country, and other forms of American roots music overlap since the mid-1980s.But Louris's hidden superpower is that he's kind of like a musical Swiss Army knife – he's basically got a creative skill for any application. Want him and his band to serve as accompanists for some of the most distinctive singer-songwriters, like Wesley Stage and Joe Henry? He can do that. Looking for achingly-perfect, near-fraternal harmonies on hit songs like Counting Crows' “Mr. Jones”? He can (and did) do that. If you're the Tedeschi Trucks Band or The Chicks and you're looking for someone to write you some catchy, melodic, roots-pop songs? Gary's your guy. If that's not enough, he has also produced records for artists like Dar Williams, The Sadies, and The Jayhawks, too. Whatever your musical need may be, chances are that Gary Louris can do it.In between all these varied musical roles, Louris has also found time to release several solo albums, the newest of which – 'Dark Country' – was released earlier this month. He recorded it mostly solo in his home studio and the word on the street is that this collection of songs, inspired by his wife, is his most intimate and romantic album yet. I've been a big fan of Gary Louris for basically my entire adult life and enjoyed our wide-ranging Basic Folk conversation, touching on the way technical limitations can shape an artist's style, what he's learned from a career's-worth of collaborations, his process working on his new solo album, the relationship between versatility and longevity, and what the influence of romance on his songwriting looks like now, in the fifth decade of his music career.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us?
