Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth. -- Psalm 47:1–2 (ESV) What do you consider worshipful? Maybe a quiet time of reflection. Maybe it's a loud excited melody. Maybe it's an old familiar hymn. Maybe it's a scripture read clearly. Often times our definitions are colored by the times and experiences where we felt close to God. We associate those times and the feelings we had with the truest expression of worship. But this Psalm pushes us to expand our boundaries. First, worship is not primarily about our experience but about the God we worship. Who He is and what He has done should elicit in us a response. That's worship. Second, the Psalm expresses that response in a variety of ways - singing, clapping, loud, soft, quiet, vocal, instrumental, and more. This week we turn to a Psalm that calls for (even demands) our response before the King of the Universe as he takes His throne. Who is He? What is He like? Why should we praise him? Take a few minutes and read through the whole of Psalm 47 before Sunday.

A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. Thanks for joining me today for "A Little Walk with God." I'm your host Richard Agee. Secrets are something Jesus reached inside others and made known. He didn't seem to have any Himself. Maybe we should follow suit. Scripture John 18:20-21 Jesus: I have spoken in public where the world can hear, always teaching in the synagogue and in the temple where the Jewish people gather. I have never spoken in secret. So why would you need to interrogate Me? Many have heard Me teach. Why don't you question them? They know what I have taught. Devotional I've taken several oaths in my life. As an Army officer to support and defend the Constitution To my wife In court, to tell the truth In various legal situations attesting to my identity or the truth of some legal document All those oaths are public record or can be I've never belonged to one of those secret societies. And I don't want to. Oaths behind closed doors. Teachings that you must reach certain levels before you are allowed to hear what the next level knows Secrets about beliefs and activities Secrets about loyalties and how deep those loyalties extend That's what I like about Jesus' testimony to the high priest Wasn't trying to be flippant Wasn't trying to be rude or arrogant Just stating fact Everything He did was in the open for all to see Even His prayers were open enough for His disciples to overhear and record them for us later in the gospels Beware of those religions that hide behind secrets Jesus had no secrets Everything He did, He did in the open for all to hear I think He tells us to do the same We have nothing to hide when we follow His command and His example It's true many have died because of His teaching, but so did He What did He teach that cost His life? God wants a personal relationship with each of us Only one relationship never ends, think about it Everyone you enter into a relationship with will die or move or things change that change the relationship Every relationship with anything or anyone terrestrial will end Only a relationship with God can last Only He is immortal and relates with our immortal soul If you want to learn more about my church, you can find us at SAF.church. If you like the devotional, share it with someone. If you don't, tell me. I hope you'll join me again tomorrow for "A Little Walk with God."

This week we reflect on the readings for this week in year A, which is the sixth Sunday in Epiphany: Deuteronomy 30:15-20, 1 Corinthians 3:1-9 and Matthew 5:21-37. Show Notes: According to Gowan (1998), the prophets to ancient Israel did not preach a legalistic message of moral reformation but an evangelistic message of faith in the God who raises the dead. From the first days of the human race in Eden, the curse threatened against sin is "dying you shall die," and the same curse hangs over Israel after Yahweh cut covenant with it at Sinai. The message of the prophets is not, "Israel has sinned: therefore, Israel needs to get its act together or it will die." The message is, "Israel has sinned; therefor Israel must die, and its only hope is to entrust itself to a God who will give it new life on the far side of death." Or even, "Israel has sinned; Israel is already dead. Cling to the God who raises the dead." This is precisely the prophetic message of 1-2 Kings, which systematically dismantles Israel's confidence in everything but the omnipotent mercy and patience of God. -Peter Leithart Some Protestants don’t view Roman Catholics as Christians, and won’t acknowledge the Roman Catholic Church as a true church. A Reformational Catholic regards Catholics as brothers, and regrets the need to modify that brotherhood as “separated.” To a Reformational Catholic, it’s blindingly obvious that there’s a billion-member Church of Jesus Christ centered in Rome. Because it regards the Roman Catholic Church as barely Christian, Protestantism leaves Roman Catholicism to its own devices. “They” had a pedophilia scandal, and “they” have a controversial pope. A Reformational Catholic recognizes that turmoil in the Roman Catholic Church is turmoil in his own family. -Peter Leithart Let us try to draw out the essential points of this conversation in order to know Jesus and to understand our Jewish brothers better. The central point, it seems to me, is wonderfully revealed in one of the most moving scenes that Neusner presents in his book. In his interior dialogue Neusner has just spent the whole day following Jesus, and now he retires for prayer and Torah study with the Jews of a certain town, in order to discuss with the rabbi of that place—once again he is thinking in terms of contemporaneity across the millennia—all that he has heard. The rabbi cites from the Babylonian Talmud: “Rabbi Simelai expounded: ‘Six hundred and thirteen commandments were given to Moses, three hundred and sixty-five negative ones, corresponding to the number of the days of the solar year, and two hundred forty-eight positive commandments, corresponding to the parts of man’s body. “‘David came and reduced them to eleven…. “‘Isaiah came and reduced them to six…. “‘Isaiah again came and reduced them to two…. “‘Habakkuk further came and based them on one, as it is said: “But the righteous shall live by his faith”’ (Hab 2:4).” Neusner then continues his book with the following dialogue: “‘So,’ the master says, ‘is this what the sage, Jesus, had to say?’ “I: ‘Not exactly, but close.’ “He: ‘What did he leave out?’ “I: ‘Nothing.’ “He: ‘Then what did he add?’ “I: ‘Himself’” (pp. 107–8). This is the central point where the believing Jew Neusner experiences alarm at Jesus’ message, and this is the central reason why he does not wish to follow Jesus, but remains with the “eternal Israel”: the centrality of Jesus’ “I” in his message, which gives everything a new direction. At this point Neusner cites as evidence of this “addition” Jesus’ words to the rich young man: “If you would be perfect, go, sell all you have and come, follow me” (cf. Mt 19:21; Neusner, p. 109 [emphasis added]). Perfection, the state of being holy as God is holy (cf. Lev 19:2, 11:44), as demanded by the Torah, now consists in following Jesus. It is only with great respect and reverence that Neusner addresses this mysterious identification of Jesus and God that is found in the discourses of the Sermon on the Mount. Nonetheless, his analysis shows that this is the point where Jesus’ message diverges fundamentally from the faith of the “eternal Israel.” Neusner demonstrates this after investigating Jesus’ attitude toward three fundamental commandments: the fourth commandment (the commandment to love one’s parents), the third commandment (to keep holy the Sabbath), and, finally, the commandment to be holy as God is holy (which we touched upon just a moment ago). Neusner comes to the disturbing conclusion that Jesus is evidently trying to persuade him to cease following these three fundamental commandments of God and to adhere to Jesus instead. -Benedict XVI

The Gospel according to Matthew was written by Matthew, who was a Jew by birth, and he was a tax collector for the Romans who ruled Israel at the time as an occupying force. So he would not have been looked upon with favor by his fellow Jews. When Jesus called Matthew to follow Him, he didn’t hesitate. He was working at his post collecting taxes from the Jews for the Roman government, and he just got up and left. Matthew was one of the 12 disciples who were to become the 12 apostles. His background was valuable for one who would be charged with spreading the message of the Gospel, since he was probably fluent in not only his native Hebrew, but also Greek and Aramaic. The Gospel of Matthew was originally written in Greek. Chapter one begins with the genealogy of Jesus, and if you have been listening to the LSFAB for a while, many of the names in this genealogy will be familiar to you. Some highlights are Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (of course); Judah (you may have heard Jesus referred to as the “Lion of the tribe of Judah”); Amminadab; Boaz and Ruth; Jesse and his son David, who slew Goliath, became King, murdered Uriah after Bathsheba and he had illicit sex and she became pregnant; their son Solomon; Abijah; Jehoshaphat (whom we read about in the last episode); and then skipping many generations, we come to Mary and Joseph. As we continue reading through the OT, more of the names in Jesus’ genealogy will become familiar to you. I used to think that this was just a long list of boring names, but the more we learn of these men, the more interesting the list becomes. After the genealogy, Matthew tells us the account of the birth of Jesus. The betrothal of Joseph and Mary. That Mary became pregnant by the Holy Spirit, how Joseph wanted to break off the marriage agreement when he learned that she was pregnant, etc. What a special family God the father chose to raise the Messiah in. Think about this. At this point in human history, God had been silent for 400 years. Many Jews were Jewish in name only. A bit like today, in fact. Sure, they went to temple but they didn’t have a true faith in God. They lived their lives by the Law of God, not the love of God. But this man, Joseph was a godly man, and a compassionate man. When he learned that his fiance was pregnant, he could have had her stoned to death. At the very least he could have disgraced her publicly. But an angel of God appeared to him in a dream and told him that the baby Mary carried was by God the Holy Spirit. And when he awoke, he did what the angel told him to do. He married Mary. He could have chalked the dream and the vision up to a bad meal the night before. But this was a man of faith. This was the perfect man to be step father for the Messiah. And the young girl Mary. We don’t know her exact age, but she was most likely a young teenager. But despite her youth, her faith and humility were astonishing. We aren’t told much about her here in Matthew, so I won’t spend any time talking about her here. We’ll do that when we get Luke’s Gospel. But the point is, God waited until the perfect time in history to begin a new agreement, a new covenant, a new testament with humankind. And according to prophecy, it would come through the lineage of David. And this couple, Joseph and Mary, were both descendants of David. And they were humble and God loving. The perfect family for the Messiah to be born into. As we begin the Christmas season, what perfect timing to read this chapter! God is good, isn’t He? What do you think?
