As some of you may have noticed, despite being called "Slashers," our show did not do a proper slasher film in its entire first year. Now, we do two in a single episode! In this grand finale to our "New Year, 'New' Movies" event, we pit Friday the 13th Part V A New Beginning against Part VII The New Blood. Doug argues that Part V, A New Beginning, is the penultimate, while Adam contends that Part VII, The New Blood, is actually superior. Jake acts as the mediator, with Adrienne being the jury. There are no ties here, goons! We have a decisive winner. Part V was directed by Danny Steinmann, who actually directed porn! The movie makes a lot more sense now, right? This movie is famous for having two depictions of Jason Voorhees, with the slasher never actually appearing in the film. There is a Voorhees in the film, albeit the actress Deborah Voorhees. Doug talks everything in this movie from the kill count to Roy Burns arguably being the best Jason in the Friday the 13th video game. Part VII was directed by John Carl Buechler, a sultan in the world of special effects, ranging from Troll to Re-Animator. This film pits the actual Jason against a drove of teenagers marching onward to doom like Lemmings if you forget to press pause AND JEAN GREY FROM X-MEN! (kinda). If that analogy is true, that makes Tina Shephard's "Charles Xavier," Dr. Crews, played by Terry Kiser. Despite over 100 acting credits to his name, you most assuredly know him best as the titular Bernie, from Weekend at Bernie's. *cue the now-redundant Bernie Sanders meme* And, to be fair, with our audience you might also remember him from Tammy and the T-Rex. Florida's Cannabis News Podcast Wednesday, November 25, 2020   Cannabis Taxation—Part V—Congress Can Deter Drug Use and Raise Revenue By Reforming Section 280E   This week, David wraps up Florida’s Cannabis News Podcast’s five part series on Section 280E. In this episode (Part V), we look at what the future holds for Section 280E. Cannabis businesses owners want to pay state and federal taxes. Maintaining a strong working relationship with the IRS legitimizes these businesses, and, in turn, the entire cannabis industry. The current tax regime forces cannabis businesses to either ignore Section 280E on their tax filings, or forego paying taxes altogether. The former forces these businesses to gamble on the IRS overlooking their filing, and the latter evaporates their revenues. Congress can solve this problem in one of two ways: amend the CSA or amend Section 280E.   Here are the highlights:   The primary reason why state-legal cannabis businesses are required to comply with Section 280E is because their product is a Schedule I substance under federal law. If Congress amended the CSA to include an exception for state legal cannabis businesses, that would alleviate the tax burden cannabis business owners face. This reform is the heart of the Tenth Amendment Through Entrusting States (STATES) Act. Proposed by Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), the STATES Act amends the CSA so long as the cannabis business complies with state law, the CSA provisions no longer apply to that business. If enacted, the CSA would be rendered inapplicable to state-legal cannabis businesses, thus making Section 280E also inapplicable to these businesses. Under the STATES Act, selling cannabis will not trigger Section 280E because businesses in compliance with state cannabis laws will not be in violation of the CSA, and therefore would not be “trafficking in controlled substances.   The STATES Act does not make cannabis federally legal, or even re-schedule or decriminalize it, but the Act gives state-legal cannabis businesses a fair chance to compete, allow the full development of state markets, and give these businesses the freedom to avail themselves of tax benefits and modern accounting regulations currently denied to them. It allows states who want to move forward in this industry a chance to compete in the global market. With states like California having the sixth largest economy in the world, becoming a global player is a realistic goal. The drafters of the STATES Act understand that ambiguity is an obstacle to cannabis businesses when filing taxes.   The other solution is to amend Section 280E itself. This approach is the heart of the Small Business Tax Equity Act of 2017. The legislation, S. 777 and H.R. 1810, exempts cannabis businesses acting in compliance with state law from Section 280E, thereby allowing them to take the ordinary business deductions afforded to all other legal businesses. Under the Small Business Tax Act, Section 280E would read as normal, but include the language, unless such trade or business consists of cannabis sales conducted in compliance with State law, at the end of the rule. This reform more narrowly addresses the unfair impact Section 280E has on states with regulated cannabis markets, without doing an entire overhaul of United States cannabis policy, but the future is not certain for the Small Business Tax Equity Act of 2017, which has not moved since its introduction into Congress in 2017.   Tax neutrality is based on the primary goal to raise revenue, not discriminating against certain group of taxpayers. Section 280E is a non-neutral tax policy that punishes state legal businesses by denying them benefits that quite frankly are required for survival in the American economy. Non-neutral tax policy is effective when it halts or hinders activities that are in opposition to public policy, but such policies can be problematic if they are not narrowly tailored and out of date with current markets.   Love the show? The count to Halloween continues as Parallax Views celebrates the ladies of horror movies otherwise known as "Scream Queens"! From Janet Leigh in Psycho to her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween, a variety of actresses have appeared in scary movies over the years and made the role of women in horror a pivotal one to say the least. And, often times, the "Scream Queens" aren't just relegated to using their well-known superpowered lungs. Indeed many a horror film has featured females who fight back, especially in the form of the "Final Girl" trope, such as Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) in the Scream franchise, and Alice Hardy (Adrienne King) in Friday the 13th among many others. So in order to celebrate the gals who add a feminine touch to the scary movies we all know and love I invited two actresses associated with the genre onto the program just in time for Halloween. That's right, it's another Parallax Views double feature! Two interviews for the price of one! First up...Linnea Quigley, the "Queen of the B's", joins us to discuss her long career in film and how she became one of the most recognizable "Scream Queens" of the 1980s due to her appearances in cult classics like Return of the Living Dead; Night of the Demons; Silent Night, Deadly Night; Graduation Day; Nightmare Sister; Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama; and Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers. In fact, as of the recording of this interview, Deborah has just finished editing her directorial debut, 13: Fanboy. Returning to her horror roots, Deborah's 13: Fanboy is about a deranged fan who stalks the cast of the Friday the 13th series. The film features such Friday the 13th alumni as the original Friday the 13th's Adrienne King, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood's Lar Park Lincoln and Jennifer Banko, two different Jason Voorhees actors in the form of Kane Hodder and C.J. Graham, Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning's Ron Sloan, Friday the 13th Part III's Tracie Savage, and even Corey Feldman (who fans will remember appeared in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter and Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning). Hell, the movie even features a turn by Debra Sullivan who wrote the script for one of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies and an appearance by Dee Wallace of Joe Dante's The Howling, Steven Speilberg's E.T., Critters, Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem, Stephen King's Cujo, and many other fan favorite genre features! Deborah describes the movie as both a psychological thriller that'll be enjoyed by viewers outside of the Friday the 13th fandom as well a a flick that promises a few good throwback and slasher moments for longtime fans of the Friday the 13th franchise.In this conversation Deborah and talk both about her experiences with Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning as well as the exciting project 13: Fanboy.
