What Is Missingvv19-25 “no more… weeping… cry of distress… infant who lives but a few days… they shall not… plant and another eat… labor in vain or bear children for calamity… wolf… lion… serpent…”v24 “Before they call I will answer”2. How We Livev25 “the lion shall eat straw like the ox…”v18 “be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create”Prayer of ConfessionOur Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer, we are in great need of your help. We wander this world foolishly seeking to satisfy our pride, greed and lust. When joy is lacking, we envy, resent, and act with spite. We have lived in the world for ourselves. We have not put you first. We admit our disordered loves and disordered life. With hard hearts we have neglected your call, making excuses instead of coming at your invitation. Forgive every offense. Transform our hearts and minds. Fill us with your love so we inhabit and serve our city as faithful citizens of your city. Grant us eternal joy and gladness through Christ. Amen.Questions for ReflectionWhat do you love about New York City (or where you live)? What do you not like? Why does the Bible make love for God such a priority? How is putting God first difficult for you? What in the list of what God will fix do you most long for: no more cries of distress, no early death, no building and others inhabiting, no futile work, no children born to suffer, no predators? How can the vision of a hopeful future help you in the present? How is the city of God different from human cities? What does Jesus do and say that indicates the new Jerusalem will be very different? What can you learn from the picture that the wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like an ox? How is the pursuit of joy and the pursuit of God intertwined? What can you change in your life so that there is more joy and gladness in it?How can sacrificial service be a means to a more satisfying life?Read AheadIsaiah Sermon Series

THE BOOK OF JOB, Chapter 29

    Simple Gifts

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 19, 2025 3:00

The book of Job is wisdom literature, like Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. What can we add to what has already been written on the Book of Job? Is it the oldest book in the canon as its historical milieu would place it, or was it written (down) much later? Is it merely a literary story meant to illuminate the relation between God and man-in-the-created-order, or is it historical? We are not so foolish as to claim that we know any of these answers, or how God has in fact put His word together, but we have learned not to put the plausible stories of man in the place of what He says in His word. We will never go far wrong if we simply trust what God says, being careful readers of scripture. What we do know is that Job is a masterpiece of literature by any metric, and one of (if not) THE greatest works of wisdom literature ever crafted. I cannot help but end with a quote from another such brilliant work: Ecclesiastes 7:23–29 All this I have tested by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me. That which has been is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out? I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.... Behold, this is what I found, says the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things — which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found.... See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes. (ESV) Ecclesiastes 12:10–13 The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. (ESV)

It took decades to form you into the person you are. The stories you've come to believe and the ones you tell yourself over and over. The habits and routines you've come to rely on that define virtually every morning and every night of your life. The circle that you have chosen (or that has chosen you) for influence and connection. These have shaped you. What if you began to believe good, true, and healthy stories about God and yourself? What if your routines became intentionally centered on a faithful future? What if your most important influencers were not instafamous, but people who live in your town who have been formed into the image of Christ? The sermon today is titled "The Slow Fix." This sermon is the fifteenth installment in our series "Follow Me," and is the fourth in the sub-series "More Like Jesus." The Scripture reading is from Hebrews 12:1 (ESV). Originally preached at West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on June 15, 2025. All lessons fit under one of 6 broad categories: Begin, Instill, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. Giving comes from the heart. In the Bible, the saying "It is more blessed to give than to receive" is found in Acts 20:35. This quote is attributed to Jesus by Paul in his address to the elders of the church in Ephesus. The verse emphasizes the value and blessing associated with generosity and giving to others.  The full verse in the ESV reads: "In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" This entails our not acting cheaply or allowing ourselves to be taken advantage of by those with vastly more than us. In either case, our example will draw God's blessings and provision. But we as well will be used by God as an example of how Himself is towards us and all who would come to Him. To all my very good friends and TRUE brothers in Portugal, I have attempted as best I can to give...but my son and I have been vastly out-blessed by all of you. Being who I am-I am working to be a greater blessing to each and every one of you-and to those who would hear the Good News of Jesus Christ...With much gratituded, please listen to this episode that I recorded many and saved for a day that I had no studio...which is today; as I am in Portugal...Lastly, this episode is dedicate to my friend DAVID HICKS who is the forerunner of giving as he takes care of his medically challenged wife daily...Thank you David for being an example for the rest of us as to what it means to GIVE of YOURSELF...when it's difficult...with much love...StevenBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/reason-for-truth--2774396/support.

“Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15 NLT) Some Christians prefer not to concern themselves with the details of their faith. They may say something like, “I don’t care about theology. I just love Jesus.” That’s a sweet sentiment, but it’s a dangerous one. We need to care about theology. Theology is the study of what God has revealed to us. If we don’t know what God has revealed to us, then we won’t have a spiritual or moral compass to guide us through life. Without a spiritual compass, we may be just slightly off course today, but we’ll be entirely lost in no time at all. Let’s say you board a plane to Hawaii. As you’re buckling your seatbelt and the plane is taxiing down the runway, you hear the captain say, “Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to Flight 232 with service to Honolulu, Hawaii. I’ve been having problems with some of our navigational devices. They seem to be a few degrees off. I’m not really worried about it, though. I think we’ll be okay.” That would be ludicrous. From 35,000 feet in the air, Hawaii is just a speck in the middle of the ocean. I’m always amazed that pilots find it under the best of conditions. If the navigational devices aren’t working properly and the plane is even just a few degrees off, it would be miles off course by the time it’s supposed to land. The same principle applies to our spiritual navigational guide. Without theology, you might be a little off course now, but you’ll be crash-landing at some point. The apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:8: “For by grace you have been saved through faith” (ESV). But our faith is based on compelling evidence from Scripture. The more we understand the big picture of God’s Word and the concepts on which our Christian faith is built, the stronger our faith will grow. What’s more, the better acquainted we are with our spiritual compass, the better able we’ll be to help others find their way. Look at Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 2:15: “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth” (NLT). You have to know the Word of Truth—and the basic theological principles in it—to be able to explain it correctly. The apostle Peter chimes in with these words: “If someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it” (1 Peter 3:15 NLT). Since you have no way of knowing what someone may ask, you need to have a broad understanding of theology. To be an effective disciple of Jesus, you must know what you believe and why. You must know what God has revealed through His Word and what it means and doesn’t mean. If you don’t know sound theology, you may find yourself further off course spiritually than you ever imagined. Reflection question: How can you become better prepared to explain your hope as a believer?
