Helena Kennedy is one of Britain's most distinguished lawyers. Brought up in a Glasgow tenement flat, she was the first in her family to go to university. But instead of going to Glasgow University to read English and becoming a teacher, as they expected, she startled everyone by travelling to London - to study for the Bar. Some of her friends misunderstood and thought she'd gone south to find bar work. This was the end of the sixties, a time when there were extremely few women barristers. Since then, her ambition, fierce intelligence and considerable charm have taken her right to the top, and she now sits in the House of Lords as Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws. She created a huge stir when she published her first book, Eve was Framed, in 1992 – a shocking examination of how the criminal justice system fails women. Three years ago, she felt so little had changed that she published a sequel – in a book with the title Misjustice. Helen Kennedy campaigns now too on wider human rights issues, such as the persecution and murder of women in Iran and the shocking genocide of the Uighurs in China. In conversation with Michael Berkeley, Helena Kennedy looks back to the childhood which has been so influential on her campaigns for justice, and chooses the music which has sustained her through a series of difficult and high-profile cases. Her playlist includes Handel, Bach, Schubert, George Benjamin, James MacMillan, and her favourite Puccini opera, with Mimi's famous aria from La Boheme. Support the Homeopathy Hangout podcast at https://patron.podbean.com/homeopathyhangout Ep 57: Homeopathy for Post Natal Depression - Homeopath Helen Kennedy shares her story Helen shares her story below: I was first introduced to Homeopathy when my children who are now 36 and 37 were 18 months and 3 yrs old. I had post natal depression and had no idea – but I also knew life was not as I thought it would or should be. I was referred to see a Homeopath for post natal depression and that woman changed my life overnight! I spent the next few years using Homeopathy on my children and my family for any and every situation. We moved to Hong Kong in 1988 and I was not able to access it there but returned to NZ in 1992 where we lived for 4 years before moving to Brisbane. It was in Brisbane that I saw the sign for Australian College of Natural Medicine and I signed up to study Homeopathy where I spent the next 4.5 years doing a Bachelor of Health Science full time. I moved back to NZ and was in Christchurch when the earth quakes hit and saw the wonder of how Homeopathy can treat trauma. I was a lecturer for the College of Health and Homeopathy until that learning went online. I am a grandmother of 2 lovely children and now the Secretary/treasurer of the NZ Council of Homeopaths. I have a busy practice in Christchurch and try to balance my time between patient's, NZCH work, tennis and friends and family. I am also a Marriage celebrant. I have witnessed many miracles with the use of Homeopathy, and through a particular protocol I have helped 8 women get pregnant and have healthy babies, one was even named after me due to the mum being 43 when she conceived after the Gynaecologist told her it was impossible. I am passionate about Homeopathy and how it can have such a powerful and profound effect on the health of every individual. Official Synopsis: From writer/director Lili Matta, and starring Dada Elza ("Mystery Incorporated") and Jim O'Heir ("Parks and Recreation"), action has a new address : 86 MELROSE AVENUE. A diverse group of people at a gallery opening is taken hostage by an ex-Marine suffering with PTSD and forced to confront their cultural differences, their pasts, and their looming mortality as time ticks away. Anastasia Antonia, Gregory Zarian, Terri Ivens, Langstone Fishburne, Michael Polak, Andy Evans, Richard Sabine, Helen Kennedy, and Gary Sturm star in a film by Lili Matta. We talked with Matta about about surviving the Lebanese Civil War, the issues with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and how mental health is neglected. I prefer to used the term from World War I referring to it as Shell Shocked instead as it does not diminish those currently suffering and struggling through their issues. Matta also talks about gun violence, the difficulties that people have in interacting with one another because of unresolved issues, warring nations and how a setting like an art gallery is what beings people of all walks of life, from the affluent to the impoverished in appreciating the works of talented creators. We also discuss with Ms. Matta about the struggles of being the executive producer, director and writer on her own projects, how film helped her escape while hiding in the shelters during the shelling going on during the Lebanese Civil War, where Lebanon had really become more of a chessboard in the disputes between warring nations and not just among the people. Ms. Matta also talks about why so many filmmakers have chosen to leave Los Angeles when it comes to financing independent films. While in lockdown, Betina, a young woman in São Paulo, Brazil, stays busy cooking and working. She tries to stay calm by meditating. But Betina, who identifies as a lesbian, faces another challenge. Her parents are homophobic, she said, and she doesn't feel comfortable being herself while working from home because of the pandemic. “My parents make sure I know they are not OK with my ‘choices' every day. And being a lesbian made them so disappointed in me that no matter what I do, it's never enough,” said Betina, who asked that her surname not be used to protect her identity. “I feel like I'm watching my life go by through somebody else's eyes — because I'm not who they want me to be, but I also can't be myself when I'm in their house.”Betina is not alone. Many people who identify as LGBTQ are experiencing lockdown differently than their heterosexual peers — especially those stuck in homophobic homes. And LGBTQ organizations around the world are seeing significant upticks in calls for help. Related: COVID-19: The latest from The WorldSwitchboard, the UK's leading LGBT+ helpline, says it's receiving 20% more calls, emails and instant messages than they did before the pandemic — and those numbers continue to rise.“It's really, really staggering,” said Natasha Walker, Switchboard's co-chair. “I know we've spoken to people who've come out to their family as transgender or who've come out to their family as homosexual and the parents aren't dealing with that very well. Those callers are contacting us because they think they're about to be kicked out.”Transgender and gender-nonconforming people are calling and messaging at an even higher rate, Walker said. Chuck Bastie interviews skater Eric Radford, about his participation on CBC TV's "Battle Of The Blades", as well as his reasons for choosing Egale Canada as his charity of choice! Chuck also chats with Helen Kennedy, the Executive Director of Egale Canada about the wonderful partnership with Eric!
