Most people think breast cancer treatment ends when the tumor is gone. Science says that's where the real damage often begins, and the woman making that argument was diagnosed at 28, lost her mother to ovarian cancer the same year, and turned her own dismissal by the medical system into a specialization that now treats women nobody else will touch. In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Corinne Menn Board Certified OBGYN, breast cancer survivor, and one of the few specialists in the world treating menopause in cancer survivors. We break down why 80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no strong family history, why tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors quietly devastate brain, bone, and sexual health, and why telling a woman with severe vaginal atrophy to use coconut oil is not evidence-based medicine. Dr. Corinne also opens up about her own diagnosis, her premature menopause at 28, the truth about hormone replacement therapy after breast cancer, and the BRCA, ApoE4, and surgical menopause snowball nobody is putting together for patients. This conversation will completely change how you think about breast cancer, menopause, and the women's health crisis hiding in plain sight. What if joy was part of your healing plan? Today's guest, Shantel Behroozan, has 243,000 followers on Instagram — and the moment you hear her story, you'll understand why. Beverly Hills-based and seven years cancer-free, Shantel was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 after being told three separate times that she was "fine." She kept advocating for herself, and that decision likely saved her life. But what she did next is what stopped Jen in her tracks: Shantel went to dance class every single day before her radiation treatments — walking in sweaty, red-faced, and happy while others sat exhausted in the waiting room. That refusal to let cancer steal her joy became the seed for Exit 33, her 4,000-square-foot dance studio in Beverly Hills, where she's now danced with thousands of women over the past seven years. In this episode, Shantel and Jen talk about: The "small pebble" she felt under her shirt at dinner — and why she refused to wait for the test results The lymph node sign her doctors missed (twice) and what every woman should know Why she chose a lumpectomy at 36 — and what she'd reconsider today How she danced through chemical menopause, Lupron injections, and aromatase inhibitors Turning her backyard into a 75-woman dance party during COVID The grief of losing the choice to have a fourth child Breaking Persian cultural norms by dancing publicly and speaking openly about cancer Why she now says "now I know why me" Practical advice for women newly diagnosed (spoiler: it starts with movement) Whether you're navigating a diagnosis, supporting someone who is, or just need a reminder that joy is still available to you — this conversation will leave you wanting to turn the music up and dance in your kitchen. Emotional pain is not just in your head. It is happening in your body. In this episode of the Nutrition After Breast Cancer: Just the Facts series, we look at the connection between emotional and physical pain through both lived experience and research. When you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, or stuck in a loop of thoughts, there is a biological reason for it. Your nervous system is responding exactly the way it was designed to. But understanding that changes everything. You will walk away with a clearer picture of: Why pain can feel overwhelming and never-ending How your brain processes emotional experiences Why avoidance can quietly shrink your life What it looks like to actually move through pain in a healthy way This is a grounded, honest conversation about what it means to live in a body that has been through something hard and how to care for it moving forward.   Resources Mentioned: Work with Laura: https://www.thebreastcancerrecoverycoach.com/health  Download the app: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/breast-cancer-recovery-coach/id6720763813       REFERENCES Roerink, M.E., van der Schaaf, M.E., et al. You've probably heard stories about women who get diagnosed and "bounce back." But what does it actually look like when a stage three triple negative breast cancer diagnosis tears your entire life apart — and you have to rebuild from scratch as a single mom? In this episode, Jen sits down with Sarah Beaver — stage three triple negative breast cancer survivor, mindset and resilience speaker, podcast host of Creating Sunshine, and a woman who walked away from 27 years in corporate America to step fully into her purpose. Sarah takes us back to the moment she found her lump through self-exam, the agonizing wait between imaging and diagnosis, and what it was like to hear the words "you have cancer" on January 3rd, 2025. She opens up about telling her two young daughters (one of whom scooted away thinking it was contagious), making the bold decision to take a leave of absence instead of pushing through chemo while working as a senior manager at Costco, and completely overhauling her family's nutrition during treatment. Jen and Sarah go deep on advocating for yourself when a surgeon's plan doesn't feel right, fighting insurance companies for an out-of-network reconstructive surgeon, getting second opinions, and trusting your gut — even when everyone around you is telling you to "just do what the doctor says." Sarah shares how she chose a double mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction (no implants, no expanders) and the emotional reality of seeing her body for the first time after surgery. They also talk about the identity shift that hits after treatment ends — the "now what?" that nobody prepares you for — and Sarah's free, accessible tools for healing: journaling, meditation (she's 220+ days in a row on Insight Timer), accepting help, and creating "sunshine moments" with her daughters. If you're in the thick of treatment, freshly cancer-free, or somewhere in between — this one is going to remind you that you don't have to do this alone, you are allowed to slow down, and the woman you become on the other side might just be the best version of you yet. I want to alert you, so you don’t miss out on expert analysis and insider perspectives from my guests who provide tips that can help you uplift the community, improve your financial planning, motivation, or advice on how to be a successful entrepreneur. Keep winning! Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning, television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Holly Cotton.Titles: Wellness Expert, Registered Nurse (MSN), Bestselling Author, Breast Cancer Survivor, Life Coach, SpeakerHost: Rushion McDonaldPodcast: Money Making Conversations Masterclass Holly Cotton shares her journey from nursing to authorship and wellness advocacy, shaped profoundly by surviving breast cancer. The conversation centers on holistic health, purpose after pain, mental health—especially in the Black community—and empowering women and youth to live authentically and intentionally. Purpose of the Interview The interview aims to: Humanize success by showing how trauma and diagnosis can redirect life toward purpose and impact. Redefine holistic wellness to include financial, mental, physical, and spiritual health. Destigmatize mental health conversations, particularly in Black families and communities. Inspire women and survivors to pursue authenticity, confidence, entrepreneurship, and joy after adversity. Highlight youth empowerment, especially adolescent mental health, through Holly’s books and advocacy. Key Themes & Takeaways 1. Nursing as a Foundation, Not an Identity Holly entered nursing for stability and financial security but later recognized it as a platform, not her full identity. She breaks the stereotype that nurses must work bedside or in hospitals. Her career evolved into management, teaching, wellness, and entrepreneurship. Takeaway: A degree can fund your life without defining your final destination. 2. A Holistic Lifestyle Goes Beyond Spirituality Holly reframes “holistic” living as a three‑part alignment: Mental Health Physical Health Financial Health She argues finances are critical because financial stress disrupts mental and physical well‑being. Key insight: You can’t fully heal or grow if one area—especially finances—is constantly in crisis. 3. Mental Health Is No Longer a Silent Topic Holly explains how social media and generational shifts have helped destigmatize therapy and emotional vulnerability. She contrasts the old “suck it up” mentality with today’s openness. Community, language, and exposure help people recognize anxiety, depression, and stress earlier. Takeaway: Awareness + access = healing. 4. Breast Cancer as a Turning Point, Not an Ending Diagnosed in 2012, Holly discovered her cancer at her physical peak, which made the diagnosis more shocking. She went through cycles of shock, anger, and resentment before finding clarity. Her perspective shifted from “Why me?” to “Why am I still here?” That question led her to: Become a peer support resource for newly diagnosed patients Write her autobiography, Strong More Than Muscles Step into public storytelling and advocacy Key message: Pain can push you into purpose. 5. Turning Survival Into Service Holly’s book has reached readers worldwide, including cancer patients internationally. She emphasizes visibility—showing strength, femininity, confidence, and joy after trauma. Her presence challenges stereotypes about survivors, mothers, and professional women. Takeaway: Representation heals people you may never meet personally. 6. Empowering Youth Through Mental Toughness Holly’s Freeze Your Mind, Your Magic book series focuses on adolescent mental health: Covers topics like self‑worth, pressure, body image, toxic relationships, stress, and chronic illness Includes affirmations and conversation starters Designed to create safe dialogue between parents and children Versions for: Girls Young men Special needs youth Children with chronic illness Available in English and Spanish Core belief: We invest heavily in kids’ physical strength—but neglect mental resilience. 7. Living Authentically Attracts Success Holly stresses that alignment brings fulfillment: When you live authentically, the money follows The impact, relationships, and purpose are invaluable Success isn’t just financial—it’s how many lives you uplift Notable Quotes “Holistic health is when your mental, physical, and financial health are all in sync.” “If your money isn’t right, everything else starts falling apart.” “I stopped asking ‘Why me?’ and started asking ‘Why am I still here?’” “Pain will push you to your purpose if you let it.” “We’re worried about kids being physically strong, but we need them mentally tough too.” “When you live your life authentically, everything aligns—and the money comes.” Overall Impact This interview serves as a motivational and healing masterclass, especially for: Women balancing career, motherhood, and personal dreams Cancer survivors or anyone facing health trauma Advocates for youth mental health Professionals transitioning into entrepreneurship or purpose-driven work Holly Cotton’s story reframes adversity as a doorway into alignment, leadership, and service, reminding listeners that survival is not the finish line—impact is. #STRAW #BEST #SHMSSteve Harvey Morning Show Online: http://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some people can go to their parents for help, but often, we are the ones people look to during a crisis. If you're a first-gen, eldest, and/or Latina daughter, you are the point person for your family. You make sure everything works out in the end. So what would happen if you can't be that person anymore? This week, we're talking to someone who had to not only survive breast cancer, but figure out how to do life during and after treatment.     Eileen Lopez Tome is a resilient, compassionate, and bold first-generation Cuban-American woman, mom of five, breast cancer survivor, public servant, and certified professional coach. After being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2016, she turned pain into purpose - becoming a certified coach in 2018 and dedicating her practice to guiding women through life's most defining transitions. Rooted in faith and fueled by love for her community, Eileen helps women - especially Hispanic and Latina women - release perfectionism, surrender control, and trust their own intuition. She believes healing is communal, cultural heritage is power, and legacy should be designed - not dictated by circumstance. Through coaching and advocacy, she helps women restore balance to their ecosystems - mind, body, spirit, family, and work - so they can live joyfully, creatively, and unapologetically.   In this week's episode, we're talking about how Eileen went from survival to service. Episode summaryAt 32, Marcia found a lump she assumed was “nothing.” It wasn't. In quick succession came diagnosis (May 1998), surgery including mastectomy and reconstruction, and years of hormone therapy. The shock gave way to a long, messy recovery marked by anxiety, tears, and the fierce desire to “be there” for her two young sons. Yoga entered as a lifeline: first disciplined Iyengar classes that rebuilt physical strength and steadiness, then Aṣṭāṅga for rhythm, breath, dṛṣṭi, and mental focus, and eventually yoga therapy informed by the pañcamaya kośa model—meeting herself where she was, day by day.Part two of Marcia's story is even more tender: years later, her 15-year-old son, Alex, was diagnosed with high-grade osteosarcoma. Eight months of aggressive chemotherapy, limb-saving surgery, infection, and eventual amputation followed. Through sleepless hospital nights and fragile windows at home, Marcia leaned on simple, steady practices—breath, gentle movement, and the sacred ordinary of hanging laundry in the sun. Key themesThe long arc of recovery: Treatment can be quick; integration takes time. Yoga created structure (set sequences, five-breath holds) that translated into emotional steadiness. From outer strength to inner ease: As physical stability returned, so did mental clarity and emotional regulation—sthira-sukham āsanam (PYS 2.46) in action.Rituals of the ordinary: In crisis, simple routines (breathing, gentle stretches, even doing the wash) become anchors of meaning and regulation.Pañcamaya kośa self-check: How am I—body, breath/energy, mind, personality/values, and meaning? Let practice be responsive, not rigid.Caregivers need care: Five minutes of breath can change the nervous system—and the day.Post-traumatic growth: Agency (“this diagnosis won't define our life”) and community support foster resilience.Yoga therapy in oncology: Practical tools for survivors and families; thoughtful scope of practice and team-based care.Memorable moments“I was angry at the interruption to my life—I didn't want cancer to stop me from living my dharma.”“The set sequence and five breaths made Aṣṭāṅga meditative; my body knew what came next, and my mind could rest.”“Hospital life means not moving, not sleeping, not eating well. At home, a decent meal, a real bed, and a few breaths on the mat felt holy.”“Supporting my son after amputation, I realized the PT's ‘Superman' was Śalabhāsana—the same human body, different language.”Practical takeaways (for listeners)Structure regulates: A consistent class or home sequence can downshift anxiety; predictability is medicine.Five-breath rule: Linger in postures long enough to feel the pose regulate the breath (and vice versa).Honor seasons: Your practice can be Iyengar-precise one season, Aṣṭāṅga-rhythmic the next, and kośa-guided thereafter. That's yoga.Caregiver micro-practices work: Three minutes of diaphragmatic breathing between scans or consults matters.Who this episode supportsPeople navigating or recovering from cancerParents and caregivers living in medical systemsYoga teachers/therapists seeking oncology-informed, nervous-system-first approachesAnyone rebuilding identity and routine after a health crisisAbout Marcia MercierWebsite: www.marcie.yoga.com Location: North London (UK)Offerings:Weekly online Yoga for Breast Cancer (Wednesdays 09:30–10:30 UK)1:1 Yoga Therapy (online & in person)Haṭha and Vinyāsa classes (online and local studios)Contributor with Get Me Back—a cancer-recovery community offering strength training, yoga, Pilates, and on-demand classes (getmeback.uk)Resources mentionedmarcie.yoga — contact and class scheduleGet Me Back (UK): membership and on-demand support for people post-treatmentHost reflectionMarcia's story is a fierce testament to the human spirit yoked to practice. Yesenia recounts the tearful, pivotal moment she handed a mirror to a cancer survivor who had lost her brows to chemotherapy, witnessing not just a physical change, but a profound "relaxation of the nervous system" as the woman finally saw herself again. But Yesenia's empathy is born from her own fires. She opens up about her personal journey as a teen mother at 16, navigating the stigmas of single motherhood in the expensive Bay Area, and rebuilding her own shattered confidence through faith and resilience. This is a conversation about more than just skin. You will discover:The Science of Visual Healing: How restoring physical features like the breast can trick the brain into releasing trauma and anxiety.Beyond Vanity: Why seeking aesthetic restoration isn't about hiding; it's about taking control of your story. The Single Mom Hustle: Yesenia's raw advice on overcoming societal "brokenness" and finding power in motherhood.Faith & Business: How spirituality guides Yesenia's hands and helps her hold space for her clients' grief and joy. This episode is a beautiful reminder that while we cannot always erase our scars, we have the absolute power to redefine what they mean.

The Vancouver-based Pink Lemonade was started in 2010 by two doctors Allen and Cassie Gabriel, a plastic surgeon and an anesthesiologist. They saw a gap in non-medical, emotional support for women being treated for breast cancer in the Portland-metro area. They began offering retreats and support groups locally, eventually adding a mentorship program where breast cancer survivors who have gone through treatment mentor others who have more recently gotten a diagnosis. And 15 years later, the nonprofit serves people in all 36 Oregon counties and six in SW Washington. Susan Stearns is the CEO of Pink Lemonade and was its first staff member who was also a survivor. Tina Sixberry has been a mentor since 2019 after participating in other programs. Miyuki Yaegashi met Sixberry and became her mentee earlier this year, shortly after she was diagnosed. All three join us in studio to talk about creating connections and community, and making sure those facing breast cancer diagnosis and treatment know they are not alone.
