10x National Champion/3x World Champion/3x Olympic Medalist Patrick Chan talks about retiring at 27 as Canada's most decorated figure skater, his transition to a decade of touring the world with Stars on Ice, training for his next career as a Financial Advisor, whether Kurt Browning chews his ear off about Reverse Mortgages, thriving through ‘six minutes of pressure' at three different Olympic Games, his ‘pinch me' moment meeting Roger Federer, receiving courtside honours at a Raptors game, keeping his Maple Leafs love suppressed when Trevor Linden presented him with a Vancouver Canucks jersey, and why he kind of/sort of/maybe regrets not throwing the first pitch at a Blue Jays game from the actual pitching mound! Episode Notes Part 1 of my conversation with choreographer, director, and producer Sandra Bezic! With her brother Val, Sandra was a four-time Canadian pairs champion and competed in the 1972 Olympics. She is most well known, however, as a choreographer and the creative force behind many skating shows and TV programs. She has choreographed for champions like Brian Boitano, Kurt Browning, Katarina Witt, Lu Chen, and Tara Lipinksi. Most recently, she made Lindsay Thorngren's short program for the 23/24 season. She was the director of Stars on Ice for many years and collaborated with David Wilson on Yuna Kim's All That Skate and Javier Fernandez's Revolution on Ice. Sandra also produced the Canadian TV program Battle of the Blades and in 2023 made the series “I Have Nothing” alongside comedian Carolyn Taylor. Sandra has a unique understanding of how to make skating appeal to general audiences, and we had a great conversation about choreography, entertainment, and the changes she'd like to see in the sport. Transcript of our conversation at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16tp4AuF159XJuNPMNxgpq82pGFxA9GOUTNMFLfJESvE/edit#heading=h.tje8hivsf0d I've made a playlist of a few of Sandra's choreographies that is accessible on our YouTube page. You can follow Sandra on Twitter and Instagram @SandraBezic . As we get ready for the final competitions of the '23-'24 season, we answer listener questions about all things figure skating — predictions, favorite skaters and FS moments, and what 20 programs we'd save in our end-of-the-world bunker. Welcome to our first Scoreography Q&A Episode! We asked listeners to let us know what in figure skating they wanted us to talk about. And we received a far more enthusiastic response than we ever could have imagined! As you will hear, you asked some amazing Q's about our favorite skates and skaters of all time — which, honestly, led us to a mild existential crisis! You asked what programs we would take with us into a dystopian bunker — which REALLY gave us a much greater existential crisis! You were so creative and thoughtful in your questions, we hope we did some of them justice. You also allowed us to dig into some of reasons we love the sport. From Wendy's childhood crush on Kurt Browning to Adron's epiphany at the 2006 U.S. National Championships in St. Louis, MO — all of it was fun to reminisce about. We did make sure to also dig into some of the judging changes we'd like to see, and even offered a few hot takes (Adron had far more than he expected.) We hope you enjoy us getting nostalgic about Paul Wylie program, gushing over countless skaters we adore, and let us know who your favorites are, too! What would you “take to the bunker?” We'd love to hear! We breakdown the 2024 ISU Awards and their accompanying live concert event, Art on Ice. We also take a look at the ongoing 2022 Olympic Team Medal fiasco, and talk about Gracie Gold's new memoir, Outofshapeworthlessloser. The ISU Awards were handed out for the fourth time on Sunday, February 11th during one of the first Art on Ice performances of 2024 — and the show was certainly a spectacle. Co-hosted by skating legend, Kurt Browning, and sports presenter and influencer, Elma Smit, the award show was intertwined with performances from elite skaters and musical acts performing as part of Art on Ice — a show that happens yearly in Switzerland, and is known for bold and unique shows that ignite the imagination. While some of the awards are a bit vague in terms of how those in the category qualify and the methods used for voting a little confusing, we're always here for celebrating the skaters themselves. It was a delight to see Adam Siao Him Fa, Hana Yoshida, Loena Hendrickx, and Ilia Malinin all take home some hardware. The highlight of the awards had to be the Special Achievement honor given to Deanna Stelatto-Dudek in honor of all she has achieved during her unprecedented 2-part competitive career spanning over 2 decades. It was obvious how much this acknowledgment meant to Deanna, which was wonderful to see her receive. The streamed version of the Art on Ice performances were a bit disjointed to watch — with quite of bit of the skating being missed due to the cameras often focusing on the musical performances more than the skaters. At some point, we'd love to see this award show move away from its partnership with Art on Ice and shift to the end of the season — perhaps directly following the World Championships (at the gala?). It seems like that may make these awards feel a bit more authentic and exciting. 2022 Olympic Team Medals In other ISU news, we discuss the recent decision in the Kamila Valieva case, and how the ISU has stood their ground after making what seems to be a mathematical error in redistributing points for the Olympic Team medals. With Valieva being disqualified for 4 years as of December of 2021, her scores from the 2022 Olympic Team event and 2022 Europeans have been scratched. While in the Europeans that means every woman moves up one spot, the points earned in the Team competition got far more harried and now leaves the US with gold, Japan with silver, and Russia with bronze. If the ISU had followed previous precedent and what has been their own rules, it seems Canada would be in the bronze position — and with that in mind, Canada has since filed a case to dispute the ISU's decision. Gracie Gold's Memoir Lastly, like many of you, we were quick to grab a copy of US figure skating champion, Gracie Gold's, new member — Outofshapeworthlessloser. The title certainly gives you a preview of the tone of the book, but the contents definitely dig deep into the heart of what needs to change in figure skating. From her difficult family life to massively unreasonable expectations of a teenager from varying coaches, officials, and judges, to her near-tragic meltdown prior to the 2018 Olympic Games, this book is unapologetically vulnerable. Our hope is that is brings more empathy for, and awareness to, what elite skaters go through — and the need for improvements from those who support them. Movement of any kind that gets the heart pumping can seriously improve your mindset, mood, and overall health. Back in episode 108, we had world-class figure skater and Canadian icon Kurt Browning to get his impressions on a strength training regiment he had adopted called Isometrics. Along with Kurt, we welcomed the man who happens to be one of the leading names in isometric strength training and the inventor of Isophit...Brad Thorpe. So, on this episode of Eat This with Lianne, we have invited Brad back on to help us all understand more about this revolutionary and low-impact form of exercise and just what sorts of body benefits can come from it. Chuck Bastie interviews skaters Amanda Kessel and Eric Radford, as they were eliminated last week on Battle Of The Blades. Amanda and Eric discuss their participation in the show, as well as the good fortune working with their charities, SickKids Foundation and AMANDA KESSEL is competing with Eric Radford. She is skating for SickKids Foundation. Wisconsin born Amanda Kessel has always been a natural at hockey. Coming from a sports-oriented family, there is no shortage of talent across the Kessel board. Her father was drafted into professional football, and her brothers, Phil and Blake, are also professional hockey players. Kessel played for four years at college level hockey, and helped her team win three national championships. In 2013 she was selected as the winner of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. Kessel has been on Team U.S.A. since 2008 and in the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia, she helped lead her team to a silver-medal win. Most recently, she helped her team win gold in PyeongChang, South Korea in 2018. Outside of hockey, she runs her own clothing line, AK28, with Gongshow Gear. She now devotes her time to supporting the growth and development of young women in hockey, and helping create opportunity for girls who have a dream of getting onto the ice. ERIC RADFORD is a Manitoba-born figure skater and a three-time Olympic games medalist and has won multiple other titles with his skating partner Meagan Duhamel. Radford is the only openly gay male to have won an Olympic Games gold medal. He is an advocate for the Canadian Olympic Committee's #OneTeam initiative, which supports LGBTQ inclusion and promotion in the sport. Inspired by skaters such as Kurt Browning in the early 1990's, Radford began skating at the age of eight. He moved away from home at the age of 14 to pursue his figure skating career, and hasn't looked back since. He is a back-to-back world champion (2015 and 2016) and in 2018, he and Duhamel became the first pair to successfully complete a quadruple throw jump at any Winter Olympic competition. Radford is competing with Amanda Kessel as his partner. He is skating for Egale — an organization dedicated to improving the lives of all LGBTQI2S people. Born and raised in the Sacramento, Calif., Justine began skating at age 7 1/2 and overcame the biggest obstacle of her career and her life, when she underwent scoliosis surgery at around age 10. She had to relearn to walk and skate again, despite doctors telling her she would never be able to do so ever again. She would go on to win several medals in competitions and later began coaching figure skating, and she coached and competed in ballroom dancing. Justine credits her Mom and Canadian figure-skater Kurt Browning as her role models. Here now is my conversation with Justine Lopez. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Thanks to Fiona Mcquarrie for transcribing these interview highlights: On his most embarrassing skating moment: I can clearly tell you right now. For me, it was 2001 Worlds. I was very excited, very hyper. Usually Kyoko and I went and did our own thing, just skated on our own, and I went — somehow I caught my heel on crossovers, fell and slid into the wall. On crossovers. Pretty humiliating. Just as we're starting to vie for a position at Worlds. Pretty stupid [laughs]. On how he began skating: I started in a mall rink in 1976 or 1977. My mom was a skater from Michigan. They ended up moving down to Montgomery [Alabama], and on the weekends she wanted to go skating, so she took me to the mall. I just took to it, I loved it. It kept me off the streets and gave me something to do [laughs]. And there was a game room in the mall so I'd go play games afterwards. It was just a fun-filled afternoon for me. By the time I was eight we moved up to Ohio, and I'd done ISI [Ice Skating Institute] competitions, and there I got into USFSA [US Figure Skating Association] competitions, so it got a little more competitive, and that's where it really took off. On starting as a pairs skater: I remember seeing little newspaper articles from when I was about eight, with a girl, but we didn't really skate pairs, we just stroked around a lot and probably argued [laughs]. I didn't start skating pairs until I was 17. Most of the time everyone's pursuing a singles career, and that's the mentality I'm trying to change a little bit. I was 17, I enjoyed it, and it was an attractive idea, wondering if I could compete internationally now, instead of waiting until I got this triple jump or whatever. On being coached by Peter Oppegard, while skating with Stephanie Stiegler: Peter was intense and he had a vision for his teams. I loved it then, but I appreciate it even now. He still has a reputation for being an intense coach, and I think it's great. Peter has a very good way of being able to draw your potential out with his ideas and his intensity, and as long as everyone's on the page, these things work. On working with Tamara Moskvina: She was a master of trying to make the most of things for the team, and she took responsibility for it. A lot of coaches just say, I'm trying to do this, I'm trying to do that, but if the team's not up to par, she feels that she hasn't done something. She hasn't been creative enough, or she hasn't figured out a way to get it to where we believe in it, or figured it out. I remember a couple of times at competitions, she took the blame for it, like, I have not done my job as a coach to get him to understand, or get her to understand. And I'm like, whew, the pressure's off me [laughs]. But as a coach now, I mention that to my teams, but I don't think I'm at the level yet to take full responsibility. I don't know if I can handle that yet [laughs]. On pairs skaters changing partners: It's kind of a delicate situation because you have to stay on the ethical side of things. Usually, like in everything, face to face dialogue and honesty is best. Having a clear game plan with the students, getting clear goals from them, getting them to understand your goals, and if something's not being met, having that be addressed. And everyone needs to know that if it's not being addressed, then there needs to be a meeting, and everyone has to decide which way to go, and everything needs to be clear. When you address another coach, you just go straight up to them and talk to them about it, maybe get US Figure Skating involved, but never to the student. If the student wants to talk to another student, to their friends, then that's one thing to do, but I still think the best way to do it is from coach to coach. On working with Tamara Moskvina, Igor Moskvin, and Artur Dmitriev during his partnership with Kyoko Ina: They harnessed me down a lot in my thoughts and my emotions, which for 90% of the part was great. Sometimes it's good to let a little bit out, a little wildness in a skating program or in how a person goes about their practice or their competition. But they definitely taught me structure of thought, structure of competition and practice, and how to know my body, know myself and what to expect. And at high-level competition, to learn from each mistake and to know your body. Peter brought out a great artistic flair in me. Tamara got it to where I controlled it a bit more, and Kyoko is a technician. She was the go-to person on the jumps, she had extremely efficient skating. I had to work on that a bit more, I was a little bit of a bull in a china shop that way, but I offered a side of it that she didn't have and that she could grow from. Artur was my hero growing up, it was the reckless abandonment of skating, and he had the cool hair and he was big and strong [laughs]. The confidence in his face, and the care for the woman, their cultural way on the stage, in the presence of the audience, of handling the woman — it's more than just skating pairs, it's the whole look. And I aspired to be like him, I wanted to move like him and skate like him. On being a cute boy and then a handsome adult in skating: Well, coming from Alabama, you know, you certainly weren't regarded as a good looking guy, because I was wearing spandex outfits, and if I ever had any friends come to see me, they would make fun of me and think it's silly, I'm lifting up my leg and moving my hand in a balletic way or whatever. I was humbled big time. And then I had a ballet teacher I worked with in Alabama, she was cute and I responded to what she wanted me to do. She was telling me I was looking good, and I was feeling the confidence [laughs]. It gave me confidence in a way I'd never experienced before. But I don't think about looks or anything, I just enjoy doing what I'm doing. And if that portrays a certain look or whatever, that's great. On competing at the 2002 Olympics: We wanted to know what kind of emotions we were going to have walking into it. We had a four-year plan with Tamara, and we worked out the placements we wanted to get. We had good performances and we had moments where we looked like we had two left feet, but the second year we placed seventh [at Worlds]. The third year, we placed seventh again, so we were duplicating that, which was devastating, because we needed to be fifth. So we hit a couple of Grand Prix finals, we did okay, we were there, which was the most important thing. But replicating the seventh place was so bad that we had to go back home and work that much harder. So that last year, in my mind, we worked hard, US Figure Skating gave us great support financially and with anything we needed to be the best. But also, the way we went into that last year, it was like, this is it. This might be the only Olympics I get to go to, and I really dedicated myself. It was intense, but it was so long, it was like ten months. I wanted to be a vegetable on the couch at the end of the day, knowing that I could not have done any more. I was sick of going to competitions and being nervous. So I wanted to go and enjoy myself. And when I was at the Olympics walking around, one of the first days, I was thinking, I'm healthy, I've never been in better shape, and here I am at the Olympics representing my country. [The judging scandal] I don't know if it affected our results that much, but it really comes down to feeling you've done the best you could. A month later, we got the bronze medal at Worlds, but we didn't skate that well, and I don't even hardly remember that performance. The crowning moment of my career was the Olympics, what it meant, and the way we skated. You have a four year plan, and you go four years later and you know exactly where you are. That was cool. But what really irritated me about the whole judging scandal is that there are people who have their own political purposes, and they're using all of us for pawn pieces, you know, from chess, and it does make me sick to think — I come from Alabama, I skated in a mall rink, my dream was to be in the Olympics, and these people don't know that if that little boy had that dream, he could have had the misfortune from someone else's decisions and their political games, and that's kind of unfortunate. Even if it's 13th or 14th place, with the sacred Games that it is or it's touted to be, it's a placement and it should hold a lot more sanctity, I think. On skating in Stars on Ice: It was phenomenal. All of us who were on it, it was our dream to be on these tours. The camaraderie and the ensemble work, it's just cool. It was the best, great lights, great music, intimate setting on the smaller ice. That first year, it was with Katarina Witt, Tara Lipinski, Gorsha Sur and Renee Roca, Jenni [Meno] and Todd [Sand}, Kurt Browning, Scott Hamilton, all these great skaters. Your jaw is dropping, thinking, I can't believe I'm with this group of people, I'm from Alabama, this doesn't make any sense [laughs]. But you feel intimidated, so the thing you'd better do is keep working, and I loved it and wanted to keep on that job. And what cooler job can you have than ice skating and making money doing it? So we always would work really hard to be more capable and to figure out the direction that would keep us unique. On working with his wife, Silvia Fontana: We're together 95% of the time. The only time we're apart is if she's off doing a show in Italy or something or I'm off doing a show. We love it. We coach every day together. We respect each other as athletes and as people, and we learn from each other every day, and make each other laugh. There's no other place I'd rather be than by her side, anywhere. On being on the Queer Eye for the Straight Guy TV show: When I got the call, they called my agent, I wasn't sure, I was like, isn't this the show where they cut the guy's hair off all the time? No, thank you. I wrote that in the contract, can you believe that? Yeah, you can do the show but you're not going to cut my hair [laughs]. I didn't know what to expect with those guys, it was a four-day taping , and it was like a hurricane. They come in, and you're supposed to only interact with them on camera, because everything has to be spontaneous. So we could be in different rooms for two hours, setting up the scene, and then meeting and being spontaneous [laughs]. Oh, wait, can you make that reaction again? Burst in the door and be surprised [laughs]. But we enjoyed the show, we got a ton of things out of it, great exposure, and we loved the guys. We still see Carson [Kressley] every once in a while. On being on the Skating with Celebrities TV show: It was cool, but it was intense. Since I had already been on one reality show, I figured it was going to be staged. It wasn't, and it was a lot more competitive than you'd imagine. Especially Lloyd [Eisler] and I, coming down to the wire in the end, we were doing a lot of these crazy moves that we shouldn't have been doing with people who hadn't really skated [laughed]. I did the same kind of show two years ago in Russia, Night on Ice. I got to skate with Leo Tolstoy's great-granddaughter, which was kind of cool, but it was four and a half months long, 15 episodes, which was like forever [laughs]. On running the Karisma sportswear line: It's been a lot of fun, and it's certainly a direction I never thought I would go, women's sportswear [laughs], but . . . Silvia started it a few years ago. She was teaching in Italy when I was teaching there as well, and she gave a present to a skating mother over there, it was a little skating dress, and they talked about starting their own company over there, which they did [laughs]. They wanted a nice, upscale, very beautiful Italian representation for figure skating, something that looked classy and elegant, and cute, and something made with the best materials in the world. So we have a very good line that has some great interesting textured fabrics, and every kid will ooh and aah once they touch it, and the colors really pop. And it's been three years and we are selling all over Russia and Japan and Europe. It's a lot of work but it's a lot of fun. On the state of pairs skating in the US: There's some classical-looking teams there that look unique. I think another year or so and we're going to have some depth to it. It's important to me. I'd like to have good access for all the kids in this country looking for teams and looking for partnerships, and getting more boys. If we're going to be competitive with the world, we need to get more guys around 14 or 15 thinking of pairs right away. That's going to be the hard part, because it's a commodity, in a way, it's rare to find a good guy.
I have never really been much of an ice skater. When I was a teenager, I would go indoor skating with friends, mainly to have a good laugh. When people are wobbling and falling down on a regular basis, it can be amusing! My friends and I never practiced enough to get really good. And that, I'm sure, makes all the difference. When you see someone who really skates well, it is like looking at good art. I had the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to see world class skating. A friend of mine had bought tickets to see 'Stars on ice'. Well, I had heard of the show, but didn't really know any details about who would be performing. I assumed that it would be a group of ice dancers, so to speak, but not anyone you could consider a champion. How wrong I was! The whole group of dancers were Olympic and World gold and silver champions! I couldn't believe it! They had come all the way to little old Wenatchee! You might recognize some of the names: Kurt Browning (4 times World Champion from Canada), Evan Lysaceck (Olympic gold medalist from U.S), and Ekaterina Gordeeva ( 2 times Olympic gold medalist). The performance lasted about 2 hours, with a short intermission. I took my little girl, who was mesmerized by the acrobatics and the beautiful dresses. And the stadium was packed, as you can imagine. There were cheers and claps all the way through as the stars spun in the air and landed flawlessly. I'm sure that young people in the audience were inspired to rent some skates, and go to the next public ice skating session, to wobble around and imagine themselves as stars. Grammar notes. So to speak, mesmerized, flawless. The wedding cake she made was a triumph, so to speak. The ladies were mesmerized by the diamond rings in the shop window. This antique vase is flawless; it doesn't have any cracks, or even one scratch. // //
SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2007: This is the premiere episode, featuring an interview with World Champion skater Kurt Browning. So, how did I land this interview for my very first podcast? By opening my big mouth actually. I had some (ahem) strong opinions on a few things Kurt said while doing commentary for the 2007 US National Championships. So I wrote into his website to offer some constructive criticism. I was polite and diplomatic, but I did say my thoughts. Much to my surprise, and through a few random events, he called me out of the blue to discuss my comments! And also much to my surprise, Stars on Ice happened to be coming to Chicago that weekend, so Kurt offered my husband and I free tickets and backstage passes! How incredibly gracious! He really didn't have to do that at all. But I'm glad he did! So my husband snapped a shot of us talking. I have to say, I was very impressed with Kurt on all levels. He could have told me to bug off, but he really wants to improve as a commentator. So he took the time to listen to a fan. What a guy!
