This week we're getting stuck in to the Y2K Millenium Bug, Cola Wars, Beatles songs (Obviously!) and the Suffolk coast with Danny Boyle's Science Fiction (it is though!) Musical Yesterday.---Join our Patreon for a quid a month and we'll swear at you every week or promote your stuff. as well as let you pick an episode every month. www.patreon.com/100things ---From Wikipedia: Yesterday is a 2019 romantic comedy film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, based on a story by Jack Barth and Curtis. Himesh Patel stars as struggling musician Jack Malik, who suddenly finds himself the only person who has ever heard of the Beatles and becomes famous after reintroducing their songs to the world. The film also stars Lily James, Joel Fry, Ed Sheeran, and Kate McKinnon. It gets its title from the 1965 Beatles song of the same name.Yesterday was announced in March 2018. Filming began the following month around England, particularly Norfolk and Halesworth in Suffolk. Photography also took place at Wembley Stadium, the Principality Stadium, and in Los Angeles. The filmmakers paid $10 million for the rights to use the Beatles' music; although none of the band members were involved, Boyle received approval for the project from them or their families.Yesterday had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in May 2019, and was released in the United Kingdom and the United States in June 2019, by Universal Pictures.[4] The film grossed $153 million worldwide against a production budget of $26 million. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the premise, performances, and musical sequences, but criticism for its familiarity and not exploring the concept further.
The Ojai Film Society is back! The nonprofit group was once an integral landmark in Ojai's cultural landscape, with their Sunday screenings packing the Ojai Playhouse Theater with 200+ filmgoers, seeking that communal experience through the flickering celluloid. In June 2014 that all changed when a water main burst in front of the theater and it has been closed ever since. (Here's hoping for an opening early next year). Some new blood with new energy has come onboard (we what we did there) and has been hosting free outdoor screenings at Libbey Bowl. The first film was "Dirty Dancing." On August 12th it was Questlove's Oscar-winning documentary "Summer of Soul." Then on Friday, August 26th, it will be Danny Boyle's sweet yet provocative "Yesterday." Imagine if the Beatles had never existed, except in your memories. For a struggling singer-songwriter, Himesh Patel's Jack Malik, the sudden switch into an alternative reality brings with it fame and dread. This film, expertly directed, is a tribute to the incandescent glory of the Beatles, and how important they have been to our shared experience. The new OFS executive director Kathleen Schafer and board member and documentarian Nick Weissman (a returning guest, Ep 97) joins the podcast to talk about their Summer Series (next up: "ET" on Sept. 9th), the communal experience of films, future plans for the organization and Ojai getting back to a better than normal. We talked about favorite films, running nonprofits in Ojai, the changing demographics of Ojai and how important it is to show up. We did not talk about the Lumîere brothers, Greek hoplite strategies or the origins of Szechuan cuisine. Check out OjaiFilmSociety.org for the latest event information. "The aspirant singer Jack Malik is struggling to be a great musician with the support of his agent Ellie Appleton and his closer friends. However he is a failure and needs to work in a supermarket to survive. One day there is a blackout and Jack has an accident while riding his bicycle. When he recovers, Ellie gives a new guitar to him and Jack plays "Yesterday". Soon he realizes that the world does not know "The Beatles" and he plays and sings their songs becoming the best musician in the world with a greedy agent. But can he afford the price he has to pay for the stolen success." (IMDb 2019) —Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Dave's Reason- "I can’t live without this movie because, The Music. You fall in love with the Beatles again by watching this movie. The whole world besides some people knowing the songs, living with the guilt that he isn’t the main writer of the songs did a great job at showing the anguish. I have watched a lot of British shows growing up. I have grown to enjoy their humor and appreciate it. Yesterday speaks to me because of the songs. I love the Beatles. They are a wonderful band. They have written so many songs that have changed the music industry. The main character Jack is one person you can relate to because you know his struggle. When he sold his soul for the music you could see the loss of that innocence that all of us lose. Dave Burgess (2020)"
"Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away" a line from The Beatles song that works well with this film. A struggling musician, Jack Malik appears to be the only person in the world who remembers The Beatles music then using their songs as a way to become a rockstar. A film that more so focuses on the love aspect of his manager/friend Ellie, which at times comes off as a romance film cliche. However, at its core this is a love letter to The Beatles themselves and all fans of their music, sparking what their music always stood for, bringing people together.

What if you could become the Popstar you always dreamed of becoming, but it wasn't on your own merit; it was off the backs of one of the greatest groups in music? When all of the lights in the world go out for 12 seconds, he gets a Golden Opportunity to ascend to the top of pop music by passing off Beatles songs as his own; but can he handle the weight of being a mere pretender to the throne of The Beatles? MOVIE REVIEW: Could you imagine waking up in a world where you're the only person who knows your favorite artists? Most hipsters don't need to think hard about that, but what if it was the Beatles? And worse yet, they never existed in the first place? A real nightmare indeed, a nightmare Jack Malik realizes is all too real. To cope, he struggles to remember every single Beatles song he can, but can't help himself from touring as though they were his own songs. But that sounds a little like plagiarism, doesn't it? Yesterday is Rated PG-13 for suggestive content and language. It features Himesh Patel, Lily James, Kate McKinnon, and Ed Sheeran. Directed by Danny Boyle. In Yesterday, Himesh Patel plays Jack Malik, an English singer whose career is going nowhere. His parents don't understand him, but he's got the support of his friends — especially Ellie, his manager, played by Lily James. One night, Jack gets hit by a bus at the precise moment of a worldwide power outage. When he wakes up, he learns that he's in a world where the Beatles never existed. So he starts playing their songs — the world soon hears them for the first time, and Jack finds his entire life upended.
