In this episode Laura visits Cardiff to see what the Welsh capital city is doing for cycling and making the city greener and more resilient in the face of extreme weather. In 2015 Greener Grangetown was completed a city centre project to improve water management and reduce huge volumes of water being transported to water processing plants, and to improve flood resilience. 12 Victorian streets were transformed, and the UK's first cycle street was built, with more than 100 trees planted, safer junctions and improved pavements. In 2019, the Senedd, the devolved government of Wales, enacted legislation to mandate flood management measures on any construction that impacts an area of 100m2 or more. This means developers have to include natural water management measures, like SuDS - sustainable drainage systems - which are highly technical planted areas, which sit alongside roads, cycle routes and pavements. Since then, it is understood that thousands of housing developments have been impacted. The result in Cardiff is an increasingly green city - but it all takes money and time to implement, and progress on Cardiff's cycle network is not as fast as campaigners would like.Laura talks to, in orderSimon Dooley, Team Leader - Flood and Coastal Risk Management at Cardiff Council.Cllr Dan De'Ath, Cardiff Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning & Transport,Daffydd Trystan, newly-elected Cabinet Minister for Government Effectiveness and the Constitution and Member of the Senedd (MS)Hamish Belding, of FRideDays Bike Bus project coordinatorLinks:Wales' sustainable drainage legislation, which came into effect in 2019, and how Welsh councils can apply them. And English standards, which aren't mandatoryAbout Cardiff's Dock Feeder Canal projectCastle Street in the city centre is Cardiff's latest cycleway with rain gardens.Greener Grangetown was 108 rain gardens removing 40,000m3 volume of surface water from the combined sewer system.Wood Street by the Principality Stadium is 16 rain gardens, 15 tree pits - removing 6,800 m2 of impermeable area from the combined sewer. The Existing and future network of cycle routes in Cardiff is shown in the Active Travel Network Map which can be viewed on DataMapWales by following this link - Active Travel Network Maps | DataMapWales. From growing up on the island of Anglesey, dreaming of the iconic red jersey, to scoring two tries on his Wales debut against South Africa at just 18, to his latest incarnation in the south of France, George recalls the sacrifices, the setbacks and the sheer drive that carried him to more than a century of international caps.George reflects on the grounding influence of his parents; a mother who kept him realistic, a father who drove him relentlessly and how that balance prepared him for the intensity of the Test arena. He shares candid memories of stepping into a senior Wales changing room as a teenager, the heroes who welcomed him in, and the unique pride of running out at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. The conversation also tackles the toughest chapters of his journey: a run of concussions that forced him to reassess his health and priorities. Chapeau ! Shane Williams is a household name in sport worldwide, the former Welsh International rugby player is regarded as one of the greatest wingers and players of all time. With 87 caps for his country and multiple British and Irish Lions tour appearances, it is no wonder he is a World Rugby Hall of Fame Inductee and a winner of the World Rugby Player of the Year award. Embedded in sport for most of his life, when he retired from professional rugby in 2015 his love and passion for sport continued but took him in a very different direction. Taking part in his first marathon in 2015, it wasn't long before the Welshman became captivated with endurance sport, in particular, triathlon and more specifically with IRONMAN. Somewhat cajoled into taking on his first ever IRONMAN, he didn't have far to travel to take on his first full-distance race at IRONMAN Wales in Tenby, which he has gone on to complete five times, first hearing the words Shane Williams You are an IRONMAN, in 2015. It may come as a surprise to hear that on an IRONMAN Wales race morning, he is more nervous than lining up to play for Wales in the Principality Stadium. But, the goosebumps and passion he feels as he hears the Welsh National Anthem resound on North Beach in Tenby is one that fills him full of the same pride, excitement, and emotion he had as a professional rugby player and, when the gun goes he is more than ready, willing and able to race. A high achiever in sport and competitive by nature, he is as passionate today about triathlon as he was for rugby during his playing days. Always looking to get the best out of himself and his performance in sport, life, and in business, triathlon has opened up a whole new world for Shane Williams, and in his own words says 'I'm hooked, it makes me feel so good'.
With Judgement Day on the horizon Gareth Rhys Owen, Lauren Jenkins and Nicky Robinson head to the Principality Stadium. The boys are aware they're on Scott's home turf, with the crowd on his side, so fireworks between Hask and SQ are inevitable. Rugby league, Wigan, the Lions, Jason Robinson, Shaun Edwards and the dynasty of legendary rugby players that makes up Scott's family are all for discussion. Hask also relives how he almost donned a Wales shirt, Tinds remembers how he once ran out for Llanelli and they both recall the glory days (and embarrassing days) at a hostile Principality Stadium.
Ruth joined the Army in February 1987 as an Analyst in the Intelligence Corps. She predominantly served in B.A.O.R. and Northern Ireland during ‘the troubles' where she received a commendation from the Prime Minister of the time John Major. Ruth was investigated by the S.I.B. for being a Lesbian (having short hair and playing hockey seemed to be all the evidence needed) and although no evidence was found the whole horrific experience and humiliation forced her into leaving her chosen career after eight years due to the continued pressure she was experiencing.Ruth recently left HM Prison Service, after serving 25 years. During this time, she engaged with and supported veterans including staff and prisoners. She was also the prison lead on Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity setting up focus groups, writing and delivering training programmes to staff and prisoners.Ruth is a member of her local RBL and has also been the branch Chairperson and was involved in the organisation of the annual Poppy Appeal. She is also a member of her local RAFA Association and Veterans Hub. Her motivation for working for ‘Fighting With Pride' is because she feels that she has come full circle, finally coming ‘home' back into the ‘military family' and it is her aim to bring the LGBT+ Veterans back home where they rightly belong.Ruth lives with her wife and two mad spaniels in South Wales. She is a campanologist, surfer, kayaker and volunteers as a tractor driver for her local RNLI station. If you would like to know more about Fighting With Pride, see this link: https://www.fightingwithpride.org.uk/who-we-are/veteran-community-team/If you would like to donate to Fighting With Pride, click here: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/20501#!/DonationDetailsWebsite: www.fightingwithpride.org.ukTwitter: @fightingwprideFacebook: @fightingwithprideAlso, you may be interested to know about the Walk of Memorable Honour. The Walk of Memorable Honour is as follows:The Walk of Memorable Honour is now scheduled to be Saturday 22nd October, meeting at 1600 hrs at The Principality Stadium main entrance Westgate Street Cardiff (Main apron at the front) for 15:00 before the walk/March over to Cardiff Castle. This is the final part of the walk: The idea for the Walk of Memorable Honour came from the book Country of Memorable Honour by Thomas Firbank, which prompted the vision of a journey on foot from North to South Wales by veterans who had benefited from Armed Forces Covenant Trust Funding under the Positive Pathways scheme. Such a journey presents a unique opportunity to raise awareness of veterans' mental health issues, while at the same time offering veterans themselves the chance to take part in a memorable event. Walter's second ever Meltzer five-star match was when he defended his NXT UK Championship in Cardiff's Motorpoint Arena in front of 3,600 fans against plucky underdog Tyler Bate. Three years and three days later, he is now Gunther, he's defending the WWE Intercontinental Championship in Cardiff's Principality Stadium in front of just under twenty times that number. This time his opponent is the definition of 'picking on someone your own size' in the 'Celtic Warrior' Sheamus. Thirteen years into his WWE career may not have been when you'd expect Sheamus to gain his first five-star match from Meltzer, but here we are. For the first time in The Meltzer 5-Star Project's history, one of the hosts was live at the venue when this match occurs. Simon (@simoncross3) is here to recount his first-hand experiences, and Lorcan (@lorcanmullan) is here to find a way to still somehow talk more than Simon in the episode. https://pateron.com/lmtyspod https://facebook.com/lmtyspod https://twitter.com/lmtyspod lmtyspod@gmail.com

Sonja McLaughlan brings you reaction from the Principality Stadium, where France kept their Six Nations grand slam hopes alive after beating Wales 13-9 in Cardiff on Friday. French rugby journalist Axel May tells us why France's winning mentality is their biggest asset this year. We're also joined by former Wales internationals James Hook and Philippa Tuttiett and our commentator Gareth Lewis to reflect on a stellar performance from captain Dan Biggar and discuss whether the grand slam is now a certainty for France. And we look ahead to Saturday's matches, with England taking on Ireland at Twickenham and Scotland facing Italy. TOPICS 00:53 - French reaction with Axel May 04:50 - Dan Biggar performance 06:12 - Dan Biggar interview with Lee McKenzie 07:23 - Wales analysis 11:16 - France's winning mentality 12:12 - Interview with France team manager Raphael Ibanez 13:10 - Will France win the grand slam? 15:36 - Saturday's matches 19:01 - Concussion issues
It's Friday which can only mean one thing…Matt Dawson and Sonja McLaughlan are back with their unique take on an exciting round four of the Six Nations. And as always they are joined by Shane Horgan and Philippa Tuttiett and the special guest this week is former Scotland captain, Andy Nicol. They look ahead to England's clash against Ireland and debate who the real favourites are on Saturday and which coach is under more pressure? Eddie Jones also makes a cameo pod appearance with his thoughts on what he expects from Andy Farrell's side and Shane gives his perspective on the news this week that Johnny Sexton will retire after the World Cup. Attention then turns to tonight's game – Wales against France, can home advantage really benefit this Welsh side? Or are the French too strong psychologically to falter at the Principality Stadium? All that gets discussed and then it's prediction time...and could there be an upset in Rome?
